To improve the long cyclic stability and rate capability of Si-based anode, we demonstrate a core-shell structural Si@NC composite decorates with N-doped carbon network using a low-cost, a simple process of electrospinning and low-temperature pyrolysis. Si@PVP/Urea fabric composite spun on the copper foil was directly carbonized and then was cut into wafers used as the electrode plates without extra conductive agent and binder. The enhanced rate capability and cyclic stability of special structural Si@NC is mainly ascribable to N-doped carbon matrix providing numerous active sites, which attract Li to those points in an efficient way, and the core-shell structures supply high mechanical strength for Si@NC composite. Importantly, almost 3-fold improvement in the capacity retention rate of the Si@NC has been observed at high current densities of 1.6 and 3.2 A g −1 . Meanwhile, DFT calculations confirm that Li will be easily adsorbed by N-active sites in N-doped carbon model to strengthen chemical absorption ability, which could have more chance to grab the quickly moving Li in a brief period. It is significant for theoretical guidance of subsequent studies. The findings should make an important contribution providing a great possibility for the mass production and application to the field of lithium-ion battery.

Nanostructured materials with small particle sizes have been widely used in resistive gas sensors due to their high specific surface area and surface activity. However, phenomena including agglomeration, growth and structural damage of nanostructures are almost inevitable during the processes of device fabrication or sensing tests, which makes it difficult to exert their expected activity. To address this issue, rare earth metal oxide CeO 2 was chosen as the model material to explore confined nanostructures in resistive gas sensors. The experiment successfully achieves the preparation of confined CeO 2 nanoparticles film using a pulsed laser deposition combined with rapid annealing technology. It is found that the confined CeO 2 nanoparticles film enables the efficient detection of volatile organic compound triethylamine, demonstrating a significant response of 20 ( R a / R g ) towards 100 ppm triethylamine, a fast response of 2 s, excellent stability and selectivity. By in-situ confinement in porous carbon matrix, dispersion and fixation of CeO 2 nanoparticles can be achieved, thereby fully utilizing their high surface activity. In addition, the porous carbon matrix can serve as a transport pathway for the target gas molecules and electrons, enabling efficient gas-solid reactions and effective collection of gas sensing signals. More importantly, the confined CeO 2 nanoparticles film was grown in-situ on commercial alumina flats gas sensing substrate, which can be directly used as sensing layer for gas sensors. Based on first-principles calculations, the triethylamine sensing mechanism of the confined CeO 2 nanoparticles film was systematically analyzed at the atomic and electronic scale. This study offers new insights into enhancing the gas sensing performance of resistive gas sensors through confined nanostructures design.

A series of carbon-supported Cu Co oxide catalysts (Cu-Co/C) were prepared via the combination methods of impregnation and pyrolysis using Co-doped Cu-based metal organic framework (Cu 3 (BTC) 2 ·3H 2 O, Cu-BTC) precursor. Physicochemical properties of prepared catalysts were characterized by using various technologies and toluene was chosen as the probe molecule to evaluate their catalytic performance. Results revealed that the successive calcination in Ar and air was conducive to the formation of 3D porous carbon matrix and homogeneous elemental dispersion. The Cu-Co/C catalysts with spinel structure exhibited higher catalytic activity than that of Cu-500/C material. Moreover, CuCo 0.5 /C material exhibited superior catalytic durability and water resistance in catalytic oxidation of toluene. The excellent catalytic performance of CuCo 0.5 /C was mainly related to large specific surface area, high amounts of surface chemisorbed active oxygen and high ratio of Co 2+ /Co 3+ .

Cobalt phosphide (CoP) suffers from sluggish surface reconstruction kinetics and intrinsically low activity of reconstructed active sites during electrocatalytic processes. To address these limitations, a dual-phase engineering strategy is developed for synthesizing a hierarchical Mo, Fe co-doped CoP heterostructure encapsulated within boron and nitrogen co-doped carbon matrices (Mo, Fe-CoP/BNC). This architecture establishes a multimetallic regulation system synergized with conductive B, N-codoped carbon frameworks, enabling dynamic reconstruction and electronic structure optimization. In 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, the optimized catalyst exhibits superior oxygen evolution performance with a low overpotential of 272 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and exceptional durability exceeding 120 h of continuous operation. Combined experimental characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the structural origins of enhanced performance: Partial leaching of high-valent Mo 6+ induces in-situ surface reconstruction of CoP into highly active CoOOH species, significantly increasing accessible active sites; Fe dopants enable reversible Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox cycling, providing dynamic electron transfer pathways while modulating the d -band center of Co sites to optimize intermediate adsorption energetics; Boron co-doping synergistically tailors local charge distribution and coordination environments, facilitating homogeneous elemental dispersion and structural stability. This study not only develops a high-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst but also elucidates the intrinsic mechanism of structure reconstruction-electronic modulation synergy in enhancing catalytic activity through combined experimental and theoretical investigations.

All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) using sulfide electrolytes and high-capacity alloy-type anodes have attracted sizable interest due to their potential excellent safety and high energy density. Encapsulating insulating red phosphorus (P) inside nanopores of a carbon matrix can adequately activate its electrochemical alloying reaction with lithium. Therefore, the porosity of the carbon matrix plays a crucial role in the electrochemical performance of the resulting red P/carbon composites. Here, we use zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) with monodisperse micropores and mesoporous carbon (CMK-3) with uniform mesopores as the model hosts of red P. Our results reveal that micropores enable more effective pore utilization for the red P loading, and the P@ZTC material can achieve a record-high content (65.0 wt %) of red P confined within pores. When used as an anode of ASSLIBs, the P@ZTC electrode delivers an ultrahigh capacity of 1823 mA h g–1 and a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 87.44%. After 400 deep discharge–charge cycles (running over 250 days) at 0.2 A g–1, the P@ZTC electrode still holds a reversible capacity of 1260 mA h g–1 (99.92% capacity retention per cycle). Moreover, a P@ZTC||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 full cell can deliver a reversible areal capacity of over 3 mA h cm–2 at 0.1C after 100 cycles.

A trimetallic (Fe, Co, Zn) nanozyme embedded within a N-doped carbon matrix (FeCoZn-NC-1.5-800) was engineered via coordination-controlled pyrolysis of Fe ions doped core-shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 (ZIF-8@ZIF-67-Fe-1.5) precursor, which exhibited dual oxidase/peroxidase-mimicking activities. The bifunctional catalyst oxidized 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to form a blue product of oxidized TMB (oxTMB) without exogenous H2O2. However, the addition of L-cysteine (L-Cys) acted as a potent inhibitor, quenching oxTMB formation via thiol-mediated electron transfer, leading to a significant decrease in absorbance and the fading of the blue colour to colourless. Consequently, an H2O2-independent colormetric biosensor was developed with a wide linear range (5-50 μM), a low detection limit (0.569 μM, 3σ), good selectivity and anti-interference ability. This work establishes a paradigm for transition metal nanozyme design, offering clinical translation potential in point-of-care thiol monitoring and biocatalytic system development.

A noble-metal-free Cu/Fe@C catalyst was developed via carbonization of a bimetallic Cu/Fe–FDCA metal–organic framework (MOF), enabling ultrafast electronic tandem catalysis for the degradation of environmental pollutants within seconds. The synergistic electron transfer between Cu and Fe sites, evidenced by a 0.5 eV shift in Cu binding energy via XPS, resulted in exceptional catalytic kinetics. The catalyst efficiently reduced 12 nitroaromatic compounds to their corresponding amines within 20–180 s, including 4-nitrophenol (kapp = 4.93 min −1 ), and degraded methylene blue, Congo red, and complex dye mixtures in 15–30 s (k app up to 0.2443 s −1 ). The mesoporous carbon matrix (119 m 2 ·g −1 , I D /I G = 0.68) prevented nanoparticle aggregation, while alginate microencapsulation enabled magnetic recovery and sustained over 98 % efficiency during 1400 min of continuous-flow operation, with 94.8 % activity retention after four cycles. This work presents a scalable, sustainable catalyst platform for the production of amine-based aromatic pharmaceuticals and advanced water remediation.

s Mo-based nanoparticles (MoO 2 and Mo 2 C) embedded in porous carbon matrix have been synthesized by a successive hydrothermal and thermal treatment strategy. The synthesized materials were tested for CO x -free H 2 production via ammonia decomposition . Various characterizations, including N 2 -sorption, TGA , FTIR, TEM, XRD , EDX and XPS, were employed to investigate the morphology, component and structure of fresh and used catalysts. In terms of fresh Mo@C sample, tiny Mo-based nanoparticles (3–6 nm) are homogeneously dispersed in porous carbon matrixes, which were rapidly nitridized to MoN phases during reaction process. Most of MoN species were still embedded in carbon matrixes after 25 h stability test. For comparison, MoN@C sample was achieved via temperature-programmed ammonolysis of Mo@C sample, demonstrating the formation of MoN species and enhanced activities. The ammonia decomposition activity (∼90% conversion) is obtained over MoN@C catalyst at 600 °C and 15,000 h −1 , which is higher than that of non-pretreated Mo@C catalyst. This embedded structure also endows them with a relatively stable performance even at high temperature.

Heteroatom incorporation into the lattice of host materials as bifunctional electrocatalysts is developed as an effective strategy to promote electrochemical water splitting but challenges remain in the modulation of catalytic activity. Herein, Te-doped CoMoO3 supported on a carbon matrix (Te-CoMoO3@C) is synthesized by lattice engineering with filter paper as a sacrificial carrier and carbon source. The doping of Te can effectively modulate the local electronic structures of Co and Mo sites and significantly boost the electrochemical active surface area and electron transfer, which optimize the reactivity of reaction intermediates with the electrocatalysts. Moreover, the filter paper-derived carbon as a carrier guarantees adequate exposure of the surface active sites and enhances catalytic stability. Impressively, the optimized Te-CoMoO3@C only requires overpotentials of 76 and 215 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. As expected, Te-CoMoO3@C exhibits a low cell voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm−2 for water splitting. This work gives new insights into the rational design of metal oxides and opens up a novel strategy toward preparing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are widely used and exposed to the soil environment, but their effect on soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions remains unclear. In this study, a microcosm experiment was conducted to explore the effects of different ZnO NPs concentrations (0, 100, 500, and 1000 mg kg−1) on N2O emissions and associated functional genes related to N2O amendment with carbon (C) or nitrogen (N) substrates. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) was used to explore possible pathways controlling N2O emissions induced by ZnO NPs. In the treatment without C or N substrates, 100 and 500 mg kg−1ZnO NPs did not affect N2O production, but 1000 mg kg−1ZnO NPs stimulated N2O production. Interestingly, compared with the soils without ZnO NPs, the total N2O emissions in the presence of different ZnO NPs concentrations increased by 2.36–4.85-, 1.51–1.62-, and 6.28–8.35-fold following C, N and both C & N substrate amendments, respectively. Moreover, ZnO NPs increased the functional genes of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOBamoA) and nitrite reductase (nirS) and led to the exhaustion of nitrate but reduced the gene copies of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOAamoA). In addition, the redundancy analysis results showed that the AOBamoAandnirSgenes were positively correlated with total N2O emissions, and the PLS-PM results showed that ZnO NPs indirectly affected N2O emissions by influencing soil nitrate content, nitrifiers and denitrifiers. Overall, our results showed that ZnO NPs increase N2O emissions by increasing nitrification (AOBamoA) and denitrification (nirS), and we highlight that the exposure of ZnO NPs in agricultural fields probably results in a high risk of N2O emissions when coupled with C and N substrate amendments, contributing to global climate warming. Keywords:nanomaterials;nitrification;denitrification;nitrous oxide;soil

A method for in situ fabrication of Al@C nanocomposite energetic additives through pulsed discharge in liquid cyclohexane has been proposed. The obtained Al@C nanocomposites consist of large aluminum nanoparticles (over 100 nm) enveloped by fullerenes and a carbon matrix with smaller aluminum particles (under 100 nm) embedded within. DSC–TGA curves indicate that the heat release of Al@C is higher than that of micron-sized and nano-sized aluminum particles. Al@C nanocomposites effectively reduce the ignition delay for liquid fuels. The energy efficiency of this method is much higher than that of continuous arc ablation, with a yield of up to 2.5 mg/min. This method allows for the simple, convenient, and safe fabrication of energetic additives, presenting a promising prospect for large-scale industrial production.

Alloying-type anode materials are considered promising candidates for next-generation alkali-ion batteries. However, they face significant challenges owing to severe volume variations and sluggish kinetics, which hinder their practical applications. To address these issues, we propose a universal synthetic strategy, which can realize the facile synthesis of various alloying-type anode materials composed of a porous carbon matrix with uniformly embedded nanoparticles (Sb, Bi, or Sn). Besides, we construct the interactions among active materials, electrolyte compositions, and the resulting interface chemistries. This understanding assists in establishing balanced kinetics and stability. As a result, the fabricated battery cells based on the above strategy demonstrate high reversible capacity (515.6 mAh g −1 ), long cycle life (200 cycles), and excellent high-rate capability (at 5.0 C). Additionally, it shows improved thermal stability at 45 and 60 °C. Moreover, our alloying-type anodes exhibit significant potential for constructing a 450 Wh kg −1 battery system. This proposed strategy could boost the development of alloying-type anode materials, aligning with the future demands for low-cost, high stability, high safety, wide-temperature, and fast-charging battery systems.
