Super-strong biomimetic bulk bamboo-based composites by a neural network interfacial design strategy

Juan Hu,Jieyu Wu,Yuxiang Huang,Yingqi He,Jian Lin,Yamei Zhang,Yahui Zhang,Yanglun Yu,Wenji Yu

As a sustainable ecological material, bamboo has become a popular modern green building material because of its rich yield, lightweight, high strength and rich cultural heritage. However, due to the limitation of bamboo tube thickness, multiple thickness-direction laminations are usually required to achieve large-sized materials, which leads to a significant decrease in strength. Therefore, it is urgent to find a way produce high-strength bamboo engineering composites on a large scale. Herein, a neural network interface design strategy was proposed, and a mechanical dissociation and partial matrix removal pretreatment method was used to open the weak intercellular layer and bamboo cell wall layer to increase the resin permeation channels. This allowed the resin to form a multi-scale bonding interface between multiple dense bamboo layers, achieving the preparation of bulk bamboo-based composite with adjustable dimensions and properties. The neural network-like bonding interface could firmly fix the compressed bamboo cells and enhance the mechanical properties of the bamboo cell wall and intercellular layer of bamboo, resulting in a tensile strength of 853 MPa for the composite, which was nearly three times that of natural bamboo and significantly superior to many structural materials such as alloys and other bamboo-based composites. In addition, this material showed good mildew resistance, flame retardancy and dimensional stability. This large-size bamboo composites are easy to scale production, which can be used in fields such as wind turbine blades, building structures, and outdoor walkways in the future.

Enhancing and toughening bamboo interfacial bonding strength by reactive hyperbranched polyethyleneimine modified phenol formaldehyde resin adhesive

Jinhui Wang,Ruisong Wang,Xiaoxiao Ji,Chunde Jin,Yutao Yan

Phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin adhesives are widely used in the production of bamboo-based composites owing to their excellent bonding strength and durability. However, the inherent brittleness of cured PF resin may result in notable stress concentration at the interface between PF resin and bamboo bonding, leading to the generation of cracks. In this study, a hyperbranched compound polyethyleneimine (PEI) with high reaction activity was incorporated into a PF resin adhesive to toughen the adhesive and the bonding interface. And the effects of PEI incorporation on the properties of the adhesive and the bonding performance between PF resin and bamboo were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that introduction of flexible PEI chains could effectively facilitated stress transfer, avoiding stress concentration, thus enabling efficient energy release and play a toughening effect. In addition, PEI could react with PF resin and bamboo components during hot pressing, forming a three-dimensional network structure and enhancing the bonding interface, which was proved by FT-IR and XPS analysis. When 1 wt% PEI was incorporated, the bending strength and Charpy impact toughness of the modified PF resin was significantly increased by 38.88% and 76.02%, respectively, compared with the pure PF resin. While the dry and wet shear strength of the bamboo composite bonded by the PEI modified PF resin were also obviously increased. This study is expected to address the problem of cracking in the bonding interface of bamboo composite, and endow the composites with high strength and durability, which can prolong its service life and contribute to the healthy and sustainable development of the bamboo industry.

Nature-inspired tooth-mimetic bamboo hierarchical composites with superhard, waterproof, and stain-resistant protective structures

Han Jiawei,Li Jingpeng,Zhang Wenjun,Yao Sisi,Yu Xiuling,Yu Xia,Guo Xiaoxuan,He Sheng,Guo Dengkang,Lu Yun

Conventional bamboo waterproofing modifications frequently face limitations such as complex processing, limited functionality, inadequate mechanical durability, and reliance on petroleum-based polymers. Inspired by the hierarchical enamel-dentin structure of teeth, we propose a novel biomimetic strategy that utilizes bamboo’s intrinsic components to in situ generate a robust 170 µm-thick protective layer. This is achieved through selective surface delignification, directional NaIO 4 oxidation, and subsequent cell wall reconstruction via hot-pressing, effectively overcoming these longstanding challenges. Within this structure, the protective layer of the resulting tooth-mimetic bamboo hierarchical composite (TMB) forms via plasticization induced by the hydroxyl-aldehyde condensation reaction of dialdehyde cellulose, while the core layer densifies during hot-pressing. Consequently, TMB exhibits exceptional waterproofing, demonstrating a 99.0% reduction in surface water absorption rate compared to natural bamboo (NB). Remarkably, the protective layer maintains its waterproofing efficacy even after enduring over 100 cycles of abrasion and peeling. Additionally, TMB effectively repels common household liquids (e.g., coffee, milk, juice), and stubborn stains such as those from oil-based markers can be readily wiped off. Notably, TMB simultaneously achieves significant mechanical enhancement, attaining a Shore hardness of 92.0 HD alongside outstanding flexural and tensile properties. As a scalable composite material, TMB offers innovative strategies for protecting bamboo-based products and holds significant promise for diverse applications.

Phytic acid-based superhydrophobic coating endows bamboo with excellent water and mildew repellent properties

Haonan Ding,Xiaolong Li,Tiancheng Yuan,Yanjun Li

To ensure bamboo-based composites can withstand harsh environments, it is important to develop superhydrophobic and mildew-resistant coatings for the surfaces of the product. Achieving these functions on bamboo surfaces remains a challenging research problem. We applied a phytic acid (PA)-based hybrid coating to bamboo surfaces using a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, and superhydrophobicity was further enhanced through modification with low surface energy substances. Scanning electron microscopy-Energy disperse spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) mapping results initially confirmed the successful creation of a microscale structure with improved hierarchical roughness on the bamboo surface. Following modification with octadecylamine (OA), the polyethyleneimine (PEI)/PA-Fe 3 + /OA/Bamboo demonstrated outstanding superhydrophobic performance, with a water contact angle reaching 151° and remaining above 150° without significant change over 2 min. Despite undergoing abrasion, scratch and tape peel tests, the PEI/PA-Fe 3+ /OA/Bamboo maintained high hydrophobicity, with a water contact angle remaining above 140°. Finally, phytic acid-based hybrid metal coordination complexes created a dense protective coating on the bamboo surface. This coating both prevented Aspergillus niger from accessing internal nutrients and inhibited its adhesion to the bamboo surface. Thus, the successful application of the superhydrophobic coating enhanced the mildew resistance of bamboo.

Robust flexural performance and fracture behavior of TiO2 decorated densified bamboo as sustainable structural materials

Ba Ziyu,Luo Hongyun,Guan Juan,Luo Jun,Gao Jiajia,Wu Sujun,Ritchie Robert O.

High-performance, fast-growing natural materials with sustainable and functional features currently arouse significant attention. Here, facile processing, involving delignification, in situ hydrothermal synthesis of TiO 2 and pressure densification, is employed to transform natural bamboo into a high-performance structural material. The resulting TiO 2 -decorated densified bamboo exhibits high flexural strength and elastic stiffness, with both properties more than double that of natural bamboo. Real-time acoustic emission reveals the key role of the TiO 2 nanoparticles in enhancing the flexural properties. The introduction of nanoscale TiO 2 is found to markedly increase the degree of oxidation and the formation of hydrogen bonds in bamboo materials, leading to extensive interfacial failure between the microfibers, a micro-fibrillation process that results in substantial energy consumption and high fracture resistance. This work furthers the strategy of the synthetic reinforcement of fast-growing natural materials, which could lead to the expanded applications of sustainable materials for high-performance structural applications.

A Multifunctional Bio-Based Bamboo Coating Integrating Nano-ZnO, Artemisia argyi, KMnO4, and Nano-CaCO3 for Long-Term Preservation of Climacteric and Non-Climacteric Fruits

Juan Du,Kang-Li Yang,Zhi-Qing Yuan,Rui He,Shu-Juan Liu,Can-Cheng Li,Shou-tong Meng,Xu-yu Long,Qian Su,Qing Liao,Pei-ning Zhu

Postharvest fruit losses are largely driven by a short shelf-life resulting from ethylene-induced ripening, microbial spoilage, and moisture loss. In this study, a multifunctional coating was fabricated on Moso bamboo substrates via a simple two-step process. The coating integrates superhydrophobic, ethylene-scavenging, and antibacterial functions, utilizing rosin, nano-ZnO, Artemisia argyi powder, nano-CaCO3, and KMnO4. The bamboo with this coating acts as an indirect preservation platform, regulating the storage microenvironment to reduce ethylene accumulation, microbial proliferation, and water loss. The system is cost-effective, biosafe, and scalable for practical use. Shelf-life tests demonstrated significant extension for both climacteric and nonclimacteric fruits: bananas (from 5 to 21 days, ≥200%), strawberries (1–2 to 5 days, ≥150%), blueberries (5–7 to 15 days, ≥114%), cherry tomatoes (4–7 to 14 days, ≥100%), and sweet cherries (5–7 to 14 days, ≥100%). The synergistic effect of ethylene adsorption, moisture barrier, and contact-plus vapor-phase antibacterial action contributes to the broad-spectrum efficacy of this approach. These findings support this coating as a promising passive packaging material for fresh produce preservation.

Self-encapsulation of Fe-Co Prussian blue analogue inside delignified bamboo for the removal of indoor free formaldehyde

Honghui Yan,Xiangyu Wang,Yi Zhu,Yuding Zhu,Ruiqi Xin,Shunze Zhang,Meiling Chen,Song Li,Jeonghun Kim,Wenkai Zhu

Free formaldehyde poses significant health risks as a prevalent indoor organic pollutant, driving demand for efficient and renewable adsorption solutions. While Fe-CoPBA bimetallic metal-organic frameworks show potential for formaldehyde removal, their powdered crystalline form presents practical limitations including poor recyclability and secondary contamination. Herein, we developed a novel Fe-CoPBA@bamboo composite (Fe-Co@B) through solution blending, leveraging bamboo's inherent micro-nano hierarchical pores for Fe-CoPBA encapsulation. The Fe-CoPBA nanoparticles (NPs) successfully integrated into delignified bamboo conduits through hydroxyl-mediated ligand bonding and van der Waals interactions. Formaldehyde removal tests demonstrated Fe-Co@B's dual adsorption-catalysis mechanism effectively eliminates indoor free formaldehyde. The Fe-Co@B maintained stable removal efficiency for formaldehyde through 10 regeneration cycles while preserving structural integrity. Furthermore, the Fe-Co@B exhibits high reusability along with moisture and deformation resistance. Therefore, this work contributes to solving the current problem of indoor free formaldehyde pollution and provides research ideas for the development of new functional bamboo-based products.
