The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of oxidation on humic-acid-enhanced gypsum scaling in different nanofiltration phases, including the short-term membrane flux behaviors and the long-term ones. On the basic of correlation analysis between the changing physicochemical properties of feed solution and membrane fouling, the inner mechanisms were revealed from aspects of bulk crystallization (interaction between humic acid and inorganic ions) and surface crystallization (compositions and morphologies of surface crystallization). Furthermore, the reliability of applicating differential log-transformed absorbance spectroscopy for predicting membrane fouling was also systematically evaluated. There was an upward trend in short-term membrane fouling with increasing dosage of NaClO, while long-term membrane fouling decreased after an initial increase. During short-term filtration, the enhanced combination between inorganic ions and the humic acid with stronger density of carboxyl groups, which was generated more easily under stronger oxidation conditions, favored the earlier appearance of flux decline. During long-term filtration, the size of bulk crystallization depended on the total content of carboxyl groups in feed solution. Both of them increased firstly and then decreased with increasing oxidation. The terminal fouling layer resistance also shared a similar tendency with them, because the deposition of bulk crystallization on membranes and the formation of dense scaling layer were the direct reasons for the long-term membrane fouling. Furthermore, the differential log-transformed absorbance spectroscopy was proven to be an efficient approach to predict short-term membrane fouling, especially in the wavelength range of 260 to 280 nm. This research could not only provide guidance on alleviating oxidation-enhanced membrane fouling in nanofiltration but also propose an efficient way to predict the membrane fouling which was influenced by the interaction between organic matters and inorganic ions.

Loose nanofiltration (NF) membranes are promising in textile wastewater treatment due to their selective separation capabilities for dyes and salts. However, their widespread applications are hindered by complex manufacturing processes and membrane fouling. This work focuses on fabricating antifouling loose NF membranes using a facile method. Thereinto, amine-functionalized loose NF matrixes were first prepared using polyelectrolyte-complex induced phase inversion, where polyethyleneimine (PEI) in a coagulation bath as an inducer triggered an instantaneous phase inversion via electrostatic interactions with sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) in dope solution. The acquired NF matrix has a dense skin layer with a mean pore size of 0.72 nm, endowing it with excellent dye retention. Consequently, the Fenton catalyst, MnO 2 , was in situ grown on the membrane via the interaction between amine and Mn 2+ followed by a one-step mineralization reaction. The MnO 2 -loaded loose NF membrane could achieve 99.7 % CR rejection while allowing only 1.67 % rejection of Na 2 SO 4 in a mixed solution of 60 mg/L Congo Red (CR) and 20 g/L Na 2 SO 4 at the permeability of 51.6 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 . After cleaning with H 2 O 2 , the flux recovery rate of the membrane remains above 97 %, attributed to the catalytic effect of MnO 2 on the membrane surface. Additionally, the membrane displayed similar performance in dealing with real wastewater, underscoring its potential for practical applications in textile wastewater treatment.

Solvent-resistant nanofiltration membranes , capable of breaking “trade-off” between permeability and selectivity while resisting physical aging, hold crucial utility in developing advanced membrane materials and reducing energy consumption associated with solvent recovery. Herein, the development of scalable, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) was presented based on polysulfone (PSf) substrate with ultra-high permeability and aging resistance. The upper selective layer was composed of poly-trimethylsilylpropyne (PTMSP) and two types of nano-fillers, namely poly-dichloroxylene ( p -DCX) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate-molybdenum sulfide (SDBS-MoS 2 ). Under the influence of the additives, the redistribution of the free volume of the polymer as well as the internal spaces within additives creates additional pathways for solvent diffusion, thus increasing solvent permeance. Additionally, the combined effect of the two additives is likely to inhibit filler agglomeration and improve the overall effectiveness of the additives. Compared to pure PTMSP membranes, the p -DCX/SDBS-MoS 2 PTMSP MMMs exhibited enhanced methanol permeance (10.58 vs. 3.14 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and RB rejection (99.23 vs. 96.13 %), which greatly exceeded that of current OSN MMMs. As anticipated, aging of the prepared membranes decelerated with the addition of the additives, and the methanol permeation loss rate decreased from 50.32 % to 13.23 % after 300 h. Molecular dynamics simulations explored by structural analysis revealed the mechanism for the significant improvement in methanol permeance and aging resistance. The membranes obtained were found to be highly industrially applicable, thereby offering the potential to reduce operation costs in energy-intensive separation processes.

It is necessary to prepare a nanofiltration membrane with high permeation flux that can be used in the field of organic solvents. Gel membranes have a high solvent permeation flux, but their chained macromolecular structure is often unstable. In this study, tannic acid-bridged sodium alginate (TA x -Ca/FeSA) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes were prepared by the phase transition method using aqueous Ca 2+ and Fe 3+ solutions as cross-linking agents. TA can interact with SA through hydrogen bonding hydrophobic bonding and other interactions to form an interpenetrating three-dimensional network structure. Compared with Ca/FeSA membrane, the average pore size of TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane was reduced from 1.03 nm to 0.74 nm, and the porosity was increased from 47.62 to 59.2 %. In addition, the TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane has the characteristics of a negative charge, super hydrophilicity, and high mechanical properties, exhibits a high permeation flux of 48.97 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 with a rejection of 96.25 % for Congo red ethanol solution, has excellent solvent resistance, stain resistance, and self-cleaning ability. The TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane was demonstrated to have great potential for application in the fields of purification and solvent recovery.

Loose nanofiltration (LNF) membranes have extensive applications in precision separation processes, however, synthesizing highly permselective LNF membranes is still a considerable obstacle. Nanobubble-assisted pore-forming method was adapted to prepare a highly perm-selective LNF membrane for the first time in this work, using polysulfone (PSf) as the membrane-forming material, azodicarbonamide (AC) as the reactive pore-forming agents, and NaOH solution as the coagulation and immersion baths. By leveraging nano-bubbles produced through the reaction between AC and NaOH without adding other pore-forming agents, the membrane-forming process of PSf was regulated. It was found that the PSf LNF membranes prepared in NaOH-solution coagulation and immersion baths exhibited significantly enhanced permeation performance without compromising the rejection. These results suggested that the coagulation and immersion post-treatment processes under NaOH solution had a great effect upon the structure and the property of the membranes. The LNF membrane prepared from 20 wt% PSf casting solution with 8 wt% AC achieved a permeation flux of 188.7 L m −2 h −1 , and a Congo red (CR, Mw =696 Da) rejection of over 99 %, while a rejection of NaCl below 7 %, showing a good separation for the CR/NaCl mixed solution. Additionally, the membrane exhibited favorable mechanical properties, with a tensile strength as high as 6.5 MPa and a fracture elongation reaching as much as 32.3 %. This work provided a novel approach for producing high-performance LNF membranes in treating dye wastewater.

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes hold great promise for lithium (Li) recovery from brines, with numerous studies focusing on improving Li/Mg separation performance. However, real brine environments pose significant challenges, as fouling and scaling severely hinder Li recovery efficiency. Despite their critical impact, these challenges have received limited attention. This study addresses these issues through surface engineering of polyamide (PA) NF membranes, achieving a positively charged, ultra-smooth surface. The engineered membrane demonstrated exceptional fouling and scaling resistance during real brine treatment, exhibiting only a 12% flux decline over 12 hours, compared to 28% and 20% for the control and commercial NF270 membranes, respectively. This superior antifouling performance enabled sustained high Li flux (>80 mM·m⁻ 2 ·h⁻ 1 ) while reducing the Mg/Li mass ratio from 4.1 in the feed to 1.4 in the permeate. Additionally, the membrane displayed remarkable resistance to scaling in synthetic brine containing high concentrations of Ca 2+ and SO 4 2 ⁻. Systematic evaluations in both synthetic and real brines revealed that the enhanced process stability arises from the synergistic effects of reduced surface roughness and optimized surface charge, which together minimize foulant adhesion and mitigate scaling. These findings mark a significant advancement toward the practical implementation of membrane-based Li recovery, underscoring the critical importance of addressing fouling and scaling in real brine environments.

Residual aluminum (Al) is a growing pollutant in nanofiltration (NF) membrane-based drinking water treatment. To investigate the impact of distinct Al species fouling layers on gypsum scaling during NF, gypsum scaling tests were conducted on bare and three Al-conditioned (AlCl 3 -, Al 13 , and Al 30 -) membranes. The morphology of gypsum, the role of Al species on Ca 2+ adsorption during gypsum scaling, and the interactions between gypsum crystals and Al-conditioned membranes were investigated. Results indicated that Al-conditioned membranes had lower flux decline than the bare membrane, with the order of AlCl 3 -

Polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes are promising for diverse water treatment applications, particularly due to their high permeability, selectivity, and inherent antifouling properties. These NF membranes are highly sought after delivering high-quality drinking water. The development of high-performance NF membranes through interfacial polymerization (IP) requires careful optimization of heat treatment and post-treatment processes. In this study, we integrated these steps to establish an optimized heat treatment strategy utilizing post-treatment solutions. Systematic investigations revealed that the use of NaOH as a heating reagent etched the PA layer while promoting the hydrolysis of chloride groups, resulting in NF membranes with enhanced negative charge, improved hydrophilicity, and increased pore size. The optimized Post-3 demonstrated exceptional performance, with a permeability of 29.3 LMH/bar while achieving a remarkable 97.3 % removal efficiency for Na 2 SO 4 . The Post-3 exhibited excellent selectivity for both monovalent and multivalent ions, making it ideal for advanced water treatment applications. Furthermore, during natural surface water purification, the Post-3 effectively removed organic compounds while retaining moderate mineral content, ensuring the provision of safe drinking water with optimal mineral composition. The study also highlighted the outstanding fouling resistance and long-term stability of the Post-3, offering valuable insights into the customization of NF membranes for advanced drinking water treatment systems.

High water permeability and good separation property are greatly desired in water production due to energy concerns. To explore nanofiltration (NF) membrane with high permeability for cations separation, a positively charged NF membrane was fabricated via interfacial polymerization using polyethersulfone (PES) three-channel capillary ultrafiltration (UF) membrane as substrate, polyethyleneimine (PEI) as the aqueous precursor. The NF membrane preparation conditions were optimized. To enhance the permeability of the prepared NF membrane, modified hydroxyl contained multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-OH), grafting with piperazine (PIP), were utilized. The resultant NF membrane showed increased water flux from 20.8 L·m − 2 ·h − 1 to 56.1 L·m − 2 ·h − 1 at 4 bar after adding 0.01 wt% modified MWCNTs-OH in aqueous solution. Interestingly, MgCl 2 rejection of the membrane also increased from 94.2% to 96.9%. The positively charged NF membrane exhibited above 97% rejection for divalent cations (Mg 2 + and Ca 2 + ) and low rejection (< 70%) for monovalent cations (Na + and Li + ), and it also showed long durability and good separation for Mg 2 + and Li + when the membrane was used to separate mixed salts solution simulated the composition of salt lake brine. The fabricated membrane would have potential for effective water softening and for reclamation of lithium from brine or seawater with high Mg 2 + /Li + ratio.

In this work, a nylon 6 nanofibrous membrane was prepared via solution blowing technology and followed hot-press as scaffold for nanofiltration. The structure and properties of the hot-pressed nylon 6 nanofibrous membrane (HNM) were studied the effect of hot-pressing parameters and areal densities. Then an ultra-thin polyamide (PA) active layer was prepared by interfacial polymerization on HNM. The effects of nanofibrous scaffolds on the surface properties of ultra-thin nanofiltration membranes and their filtration performance were studied. Results showed that the nylon 6 nanofibers prepared at a concentration of 15 wt % had a good morphology and diameter distribution and the nanofibers were stacked more tightly and significantly reduced in diameter after hot pressing at 180 °C under the pressure of 15 MPa for 10 s. When the porous scaffold was prepared, HNM with an areal density of 9.4 and 14.1 g/m2has a better apparent structure, a smaller pore size, a higher porosity and a greater strength. At the same time, different areal densities of HNM have an important influence on the preparation and properties of nanofiltration membranes. With the increase of areal density, the uniformity of HNM increased while their surface roughness and pore size decreased, which is beneficial to the establishment of PA barrier layer. With areal density of 9.4 and 14.1 g/m2, the as-prepared nanofiltration membrane has a smoother surface and more outstanding filtration performance. The pure water flux is 13.1 L m−2h−1and the filtration efficiencies for NaCl and Na2SO4are 81.3% and 85.1%, respectively. Keywords:solution blowing;nylon 6 nanofibrous membrane;scaffold;nanofiltration

Ceramic nanofiltration (NF) membranes are of particular significance for molecular separations under harsh conditions. However, they are usually manufactured by the sol-gel process which frequently suffers from low efficiency and poor control in the membrane properties. Herein we demonstrate an efficient and more controllable strategy to produce ceramic tubular NF membranes based on atomic layer deposition (ALD). Tubular ceramic membranes with pore size of ~5 nm are used as the substrates, on which titanium alkoxide (titanicone) is ALD-deposited. Subsequent calcination in air degrades the organic moieties in titanicone, thus converting the dense layer of titanicone into a microporous layer of TiO 2 . This microporous TiO 2 layer serves as a thin separation layer delivering the NF size-sieving function. The thickness of the TiO 2 layer can be readily tuned by changing the ALD cycle numbers, and correspondingly the original substrate membranes are progressively tightened with rising ALD cycles, and the membrane with 300 cycles exhibits a molecular-weight-cut-off (MWCO) of ~680 Da and water permeability of 30 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . Such a water permeability is higher than many other ceramic tubular membranes with similar MWCOs because of the ultrathin nature of the microporous TiO 2 layer established by titanicone deposition and calcination.

Acid stable thin-film composite membrane for nanofiltration was fabricated by interfacial polymerization of naphthalene-1,3,6-trisulfonylchloride (NTSC) and piperazine (PIP) on porous polysulfone support membrane. The performance of the membrane was optimized by studying the preparation parameters including monomer content, reaction temperature and additive in organic phase. The separation performance of the resultant membrane was evaluated through permeation experiments, the membrane property was characterized by ATR-FTIR, XPS AFM , SEM and streaming potential measurements, and the acid stability was investigated through both static acid soaking tests and long-term permeation tests under acidic condition. After exposure to 20%(w/v) H 2 SO 4 for 2 months or running with 4.9%(w/v) H 2 SO 4 for 60 day, the PIP-NTSC composite membrane showed minor change in separation performance and no evident chemical change in the active skin layer, indicating that the developed membrane possessed good acid stability. The desired membrane exhibited a pure water permeability of about 5.8 l/m 2 h bar, a MWCO of as high as 5000 Da, and an attractive solute rejection of higher than 86.5% for a feed containing 500 mg/l Na 2 SO 4 at 0.5 MPa. Furthermore, the PIP-NTSC composite membrane could be used to treat acidic effluents from metal industries with good perm-selectivity and long-term stability.
