Biotemplate synthesis of polypyrrole@bacterial cellulose/MXene nanocomposites with synergistically enhanced electrochemical performance

Song Quancheng,Zhan Zeying,Chen Binxia,Zhou Zehang,Lu Canhui

Polypyrrole (PPy) has received extensive attention in supercapacitor electrodes due to its promising electrochemical activity, while the poor cycling stability and densely packed structure limited its electrochemical performance. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of flexible and freestanding PPy@bacterial cellulose (BC)/MXene composite film with significantly enhanced electrochemical performance. PPy nanoparticles were uniformly deposited on BC nanofibers via in situ polymerization, and assembled with highly conductive MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanoflakes through strong interfacial interactions. BC as a biological template can effectively disperse PPy nanoparticles. The intercalation of PPy@BC nanofibers into Ti 3 C 2 T x layers constructs hierarchically packed nanofibrous structure, which provides extensive accessible electrochemical active sites. Freestanding PPy@BC/Ti 3 C 2 T x (PBM) electrode exhibits superior specific capacitance (gravimetric and areal capacitance of up to 550 F g −1 and 879 mF cm −2 , respectively) and excellent capacitance retention of 83.5% after 10,000 cycles. In addition, the symmetric supercapacitor assembled by PBM papers present a high energy density of 33.1 W h kg −1 (power density of 243 W kg −1 ) and excellent capacitance retention. The elaborately designed nanostructure and PPy-Ti 3 C 2 T x hybridization make great contribution to the enhanced electrochemical performance, which provide a feasible method for the fabrication of conductive polymer-based high-performance flexible supercapacitor electrodes. Synthesis and characterization of bacterial cellulose sulfates using a SO3/pyridine complex in DMAc/LiCl

Ziyu Qin,Li Ji,Xueqiong Yin,Li Zhu,Qiang Lin,Jinming Qin

Various sodium bacterial cellulose sulfates (SBCS) were prepared via the homogeneous sulfation of bacterial cellulose (BC) with a SO 3 /pyridine (Py) complex in a dimethyl acetamide/lithium chloride solution. The SBCSs were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, elemental analyses, and thermal gravimetric analyses. A variety of conditions (including various amounts of SO 3 /Py, temperatures, and reaction times) were utilized to obtain SBCSs with DS values that ranged from 0.10 to 1.50. The XRD profiles indicated that the SBCSs had a cellulose II analog polymorphous structure. The differences between BC and microcrystalline cellulose (MC) were studied in their respective reactions. BC is more reactive than MC in both the sulfation and depolymerization processes. The order of reactivity for C OH is C6   >   C2   >   C3 for both BC and MC. Cellulose sulfates with DS values >0.31 were soluble in deionized water.

Flexible X-ray radiation protection membrane PVA/pb(NO3)2 microcapsule composites supported by bacterial cellulose

Lian Tang,Yi Zheng,Shiyan Chen,Lei Wang,Huaping Wang

Flexible and nonpoisonous X-ray-shielding membranes supported by bacterial cellulose (BC) were prepared, in which X-ray-shielding materials were of microcapsule structure by using polyvinyl alcohol as shell and lead salt as core. The effect of the wall/core interaction and the amount of cross-linking agent were taken into consideration to find the optimal reaction conditions. The morphology, microcapsule size, and lead salt release properties were investigated. After supported by BC, the flexible and potable membranes for X-ray radiation protection were prepared and the shielding properties were evaluated, which indicated a good X-ray-shielding material. We set up a new method to prepare flexible and portable X-ray radiation protection membranes. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133 , 43120.

A bacterial cellulose/Al2O3 nanofibrous composite membrane for a lithium-ion battery separator

Xu Qi,Wei Chengzhuo,Fan Lingling,Peng Shuo,Xu Weilin,Xu Jie

The bacterial cellulose (BC)/Al 2 O 3 nanofibrous composite membrane as a lithium-ion battery separator has been successfully prepared by coating Al 2 O 3 on the BC nanofibers through a simple in situ thermal decomposition of Al(NO 3 ) 3  · 9H 2 O. Thermal treatment tests show that the BC/Al 2 O 3 composite membrane is thermally stable at a high temperature of 200 °C while great shrinkage is observed for the commercial PP-PE-PP membrane. Moreover, the BC/Al 2 O 3 membrane is evaluated to have large porosity and excellent electrolyte uptake, consequently giving rise to larger ionic conductivity, lower interfacial resistance as well as better electrochemical stability. The half lithium-ion battery assembled with the BC/Al 2 O 3 separator demonstrates large discharge capacity and good cycling performance, suggesting that the BC/Al 2 O 3 membrane can be used as a lithium-ion battery separator.

Zheng Cheng,Rendang Yang,Xu Liu,Xiao Liu,Hua Chen

Herein, bacterial cellulose (BC) was synthesized by acetobacter xylinum via organic acid pre-hydrolysis liquor of agricultural corn stalk used as carbon source. Acetic acid was applied to pretreat the corn stalk, then, the prehydrolysate was detoxified by sequential steps of activated carbon and ion exchange resin treatment prior to use as carbon source to cultivate acetobacter xylinum. Moreover, the recovery of acetic acid was achieved for facilitating the reduction of cost. The results revealed that the combination method of detoxification treatment was very effective for synthesis of BC, yield could be up to 2.86   g/L. SEM analysis showed that the diameter size of BC between 20 and 70   mm. In summary, the process that bacterial cellulose was biosynthesized via prehydrolysate from agricultural corn stalk used as carbon source is feasible, and the ability to recover organic acid make it economical, sustainable and green, which fits well into the biorefinery concept.

Development of intelligent/active food packaging film based on TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose containing thymol and anthocyanin-rich purple potato extract for shelf life extension of shrimp

Yanyi Wen,Jia Liu,Lei Jiang,Zhongjie Zhu,Suirui He,Shu He,Wei Shao

An intelligent and active film was developed based on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-oxidized bacterial cellulose (TOBC) containing thymol (THY) and anthocyanin-rich purple potato extract (ANT). The microstructure, thermal stability, water vapor permeability, mechanical property and UV protection performance of TOBC-based films were evaluated. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) results show the additions of THY and ANT bring about the uneven distribution of TOBC fibers with slightly increased surface roughness . Meanwhile, the introduction of THY and ANT could increase the thermal stability, UV protection and water vapor barrier property of TOBC with slightly decreased tensile strength . The prepared ANT exhibits a pH-sensitive activity, and it endows the fabricated TOBC/THY/ANT film with colorimetric response ability to volatile ammonia. TOBC/THY/ANT film also exhibits good antibacterial and antioxidant activities . Particular finding is that TOBC/THY/ANT film possesses simultaneously freshness real-time monitoring and good shrimp preservation abilities. The antioxidant, antibacterial and color response performances of TOBC/THY/ANT film were measured for three cycles in order to prove its recycling ability. These unique features of TOBC/THY/ANT film demonstrate the potential in commercial shrimp packaging with freshness real-time monitoring.

Vacuum-assisted multi-layer bacterial cellulose/polydopamine-modified Mxene film for joule heating, photo thermal, and humidity sensing

Zhang Tianyi,Song Baiqing,Yang Jie,Yuan Binbin,Ma Jianhua

Multifunctional films have potential applications in smart wearable devices and portable electronic products. Yet, it is always a challenge to ensure these materials simultaneously to have flexible, strong, and functional properties during the material preparation process. Herein, bacterial cellulose/polydopamine modified by MXene (BC/PM) multi-layer films is prepared by vacuum-assisted self-assembly. The micromorphology, phase composition, and application performance of this composite film were systematically characterized. The mechanical properties test indicates that the BC/PM multi-layer film exhibits an excellent reinforcement effect. The tensile strength and elongation of the three-layer BC/PM film reach 181.6 MPa and 8.9%, respectively. For multifunctional applications, the BC/PM multi-layer film shows remarkable electric heating and excellent photothermal properties, for example, it can be heated up to 85 °C at a constant voltage of 6 V for 20 s, and its temperature can increase from room temperature to 90 ℃ after 250 W infrared lamp is irradiated for 30 s. Furthermore, the sample has potential high sensitivity and high response speed to humidity changes. This research will provide a data basis and theoretical reference for the practical application of bacterial cellulose-based multifunctional films.

Enhancing Wound Healing and Bactericidal Efficacy: A Hydrogel Membrane of Bacterial Cellulose and Sanxan Gel for Accelerating the Healing of Infected Wounds

Xueqing Zhao,Yucheng Shi,Shaofang Niu,Xiaoya Wei,Tongtong Liu,Mingbo Yang,Mengmeng Wu,Ge Gao,Ting Ma,Guoqiang Li

Bacterial cellulose is an extracellular polysaccharide produced by microorganisms, offering advantages such as high water-holding capacity, flexibility, and biocompatibility. However, its lack of bactericidal activity hampers its wide application. Usnic acid, a secondary metabolite derived from lichens of the Usnea genus, is recognized for its antibacterial and anti-biofilm efficiency, coupled with anti-inflammatory properties. Its water insolubility presents challenges for wide utilization and stable release. Sanxan gel, a novel polysaccharide, exhibits exceptional freeze-thaw stability, suspension properties, and high elasticity, rendering it effective as a suspending agent to improve the bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs. In this study, a hydrogel membrane is designed by combining bacterial cellulose and usnic acid suspended in sanxan gel through a simple in situ microorganism fermentation. The obtained membranes demonstrate excellent ability for sustained drug release, strong eradication capability against tested bacteria in both in vitro and in vivo experiments, effective inhibition of biofilm formation, and excellent hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. Additionally, the composite membranes promote wound healing with reduced inflammation and bacterial infection in a full-thickness wound infection model in mice. This study provides innovative insights and strategies for the development of functional dressings for infected wounds in future clinical applications.

Quaternized chitosan/oxidized bacterial cellulose cryogels with shape recovery for noncompressible hemorrhage and wound healing

Yongsheng Li,Chengnan Chu,Chuntao Chen,Bianjing Sun,Jingjing Wu,Shujun Wang,Weiwei Ding,Dongping Sun

Management of noncompressible torso hemorrhage is an urgent clinical requirement, desiring biomaterials with rapid hemostasis , anti-infection and excellent resilient properties. In this research, we have prepared a highly resilient cryogel with both hemostatic and antibacterial effects by chemical crosslinking and electrostatic interaction . The network structure crosslinked by quaternized chitosan and genipin was interspersed with oxidized bacterial cellulose after lyophilization. The as-prepared cryogel can quickly return to the original volume when soaking in water or blood. The appropriately sized pores in the cryogel help to absorb blood cells and further activate coagulation, while the quaternary ammonium salt groups on quaternized chitosan inhibit bacterial infections. Both cell and animal experiments showed that the cryogel was hypotoxic and could promote the regeneration of wound tissue. This research provides a new pathway for the preparation of double crosslinking cryogels and offers effective and safe biomaterials for the emergent bleeding management of incompressible wounds.

Bacterial Cellulose Incorporating Multicolor Fluorescent Probes for Visual Acidity Detection in Paper-Based Cultural Relics

Xu Zhang,Jingjing Yao,Yueer Yan,Yahong Zhang,Yi Tang,Yuliang Yang

Paper-based cultural relics often undergo acidification and deterioration during long-term preservation. Accurate detection of paper acidity is of great significance to assess aging status and extend the preservation lifetime of paper-based cultural relics. Rapid identification of the acidification degree and acid distribution across multiple regions of paper is essential. Inspired by fluorescent sensing technology, pH-sensitive cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) and rhodamine B (RB) fluorescent probes are synthesized and incorporated onto the nanofibers of a bacterial cellulose (BC) membrane to enable visual acidity detection of paper. Due to the complementary pH detection range of CdTe QDs and RB probes, the composite BC membrane exhibits a clear pH response across an acidic to neutral range (pH 3.0–7.5). Notably, the contrasting fluorescent colors of the two probes within the BC membrane allow for easy visualization of paper pH and acidity distribution with the naked eyes. A distinct color transition from red to green was observed on the fluorescent BC membrane when it is applied to a model paper with a gradient pH distribution. The feasibility of this method was verified by using the flat-headed pH electrode method. Additionally, common metal ions in most paper fillers, inks, pigments, as well as some sugars and amino acids showed minimal interference with the pH response of the composite BC membrane, highlighting its potential and broad applicability for visual acidity detection in paper-based cultural relics.

Electricallymodified bacterial cellulose tailored with plant based green materials for infected wound healing applications

Manjila Adhikari,Bianza Moise Bakadia,Li Wang,Ying Li,Zhijun Shi,Guang Yang

Effective treatment of infected wounds remains a challenge due to the rise of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. The development of advanced materials with strong antimicrobial properties is necessary to address this issue. In this study, a unique composite of electrically modified bacterial cellulose (EBC) with allantoin (ABC) and zein was developed by dipping diffusion method. Morphological structural analysis revealed a uniform distribution of zein and aligned fibers, confirming the synthesis of the ABC-Zein composite. The formation of ABC-Zein was further confirmed by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), which displayed additional peaks corresponding to EBC, indicating the incorporation of zein into ABC. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of ABC-Zein demonstrated a similar crystalline structure with EBC. The ABC-Zein showed mechanical integrity (tensile strength: 1.15 ± 0.21 MPa), thermal stability (degradation temperature: 290 °C), porous structure (porosity: 40.23 ± 0.21 %), and hydrophilic (water contact angle: 53.3 ± 5.3°) properties. Furthermore, the antimicrobial agent terpinen-4-ol (T4O), derived from tea tree oil, was incorporated into the ABC-Zein composite. Biological studies confirmed the antimicrobial efficacy ( Staphylococcus aureus inhibition: 88.5 ± 7.19 %) and biocompatible (cell viability: 84.95 ± 5.6 %, hemolysis: 4.479 ± 0.39 %) nature of the T4O-ABC-Zein composite. The combined effects of the aligned fiber structure, zein protein, and antimicrobial T4O significantly enhanced infected wound healing by day 7, promoting inflammatory response, granular tissue formation, cell proliferation, and angiogenesis. By day 14, T4O-ABC-Zein facilitated complete wound healing, with reepithelization, collagen I deposition, and downregulation of CD 31, Ki67, and α-SMA. Overall, the innovative T4O-ABC-Zein composite, with an aligned fiber structure, improved biocompatibility, and antimicrobial properties, holds significant potential for the treatment of infected wounds.

Eco-friendly production of leather-like material from bacterial cellulose and waste resources

Fan Yang,Zexuan Zhang,Jiugang Yuan,Jin Xu,Qiao Ji,Yutong Bai

In recent years, resource optimization has been recognized as a top priority among many challenges. Studies have indicated that valuable products can be created by combining natural or discarded resources with cutting-edge biosynthesis techniques. This approach is considered foundational for establishing a “zero-waste” socio-economic structure. This research focuses on optimizing resources and minimizing environmental impacts, especially within the manufacturing and fashion sectors. An innovative leather-like material named BC-BioLeath (Bacterial Cellulose-Based Bio Leather) has been introduced. BC was produced by the fermentation of coconut water, a byproduct of the food industry. Traditional leather-like processing, including tanning, was applied to BC using food waste such as oxidized edible oil and coffee grounds, along with timber industry by-products like vegetable tannins. Studies involving SEM observation, mechanical, style, and dyeing performance testing revealed that the product, BC-BioLeath, exhibited superior mechanical properties. For instance, BC crosslinked with oxidized edible oil showed a tensile strength of 82.14 MPa, surpassing traditional cowhide used in shoe uppers by 2.08 times. When plasticized with glycerol, the tensile strength reached 56.19 MPa, with breaking elongation of 36%. Beyond its mechanical prowess, the product also achieved economic and environmental benefits through waste repurposing, contributing to a natural energy cycle. BC-BioLeath was identified as a more humane and eco-friendly leather alternative. This method showcased not just efficient waste repurposing but also introduced a novel, microbe-focused sustainable production approach. Such a model offered a genuine circular economy solution for high-polluting sectors, such as the leather fashion industry. A cost analysis showed that BC-BioLeath's production cost of $97.92/m 2 (excluding labor and operating costs: $7.52/m 2 ) was within the commercial leather range of $39.7 to $220.8/m 2 . This indicated its sustainability as a competitive alternative.
