Rare-Earth-Element-Free Ferrite Cathode for Protonic Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Yin Zhu,Jiupai Ni,Chengsheng Ni

Cu doping in ferrite perovskites was reported to enhance the low-temperature performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of a protonic solid oxide fuel cell (H-SOFC). Zr4+ as a donor for doping in rare-earth-element-free BaFe0.9–xCu0.1ZrxO3−δ (x = 0, 0.05, and 0.1) was studied to achieve a trade-off between the high-performance electrocatalysis and stability of the Cu-containing perovskite. Zr4+ stabilized the cubic structure of the perovskite and inhibited the formation of hexagonal BaFeO3 by decreasing the Goldschmidt tolerance factor of the perovskite. Compared with BaFe0.9Cu0.1O3−δ (Zr0), BaFe0.85Cu0.1Zr0.05O3−δ (Zr5) and BaFe0.8Cu0.1Zr0.1O3−δ (Zr10) exhibit higher electric conductivity and surface exchange kinetics but a lower thermal expansion coefficient. At 600 °C, the cell with Zr10 exhibits a peak power of 547.73 mW cm–2, a polarization resistance of 0.03 Ω cm2, and a chronoamperometry of 673.13 mA cm–2 at 0.6 V after 140 h. Therefore, Zr4+ doping in the ferrite cathode can improve the ORR kinetics and durability of low-temperature H-SOFCs.

Novel high-entropy BaCo0.2Zn0.2Ga0.2Zr0.2Y0.2O3-δ cathode for proton ceramic fuel cells

Chenghao Yang,Jin Li,Shiming Hu,Jian Pu,Bo Chi

The application of cobalt-based perovskite cathode materials in proton-conducting SOFCs (H–SOFCs) is challenged by their high thermal expansion coefficient (TEC). To address interface degradation/separation between the cobalt-based perovskite cathode and the proton-conducting electrolyte, we design and prepare the high-entropy perovskite oxide (HEPO) BaCo 0.2 Zn 0.2 Ga 0.2 Zr 0.2 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BCX) as the cathode for proton-conducting SOFCs (H–SOFCs). BCX demonstrates remarkable performance and stability in the oxygen reduction reaction, validated through structural analysis and electrochemical characterizations. The TEC of BCX is as low as 12.75 × 10 -6  K −1 compared to the 18.69 × 10 -6  K −1 of the un-doped BaCoO 3-δ (BC). The polarization resistance of BCX cathode about 0.69 Ω cm 2 is realized at 600 °C, much lower than that for pristine BC cathode (1.27 Ω cm 2 ). Cell with BCX cathode exhibits remarkable long-term stability without detectable degradation over 100 h.

One stone, two birds: an impregnated net-like layer boosts oxygen reduction activity by removing and transforming surface segregation

Yanling Zhou,Yang Gao,Guichan Chen,Mingyu Jiang,Dehong Huang,Zezhi Zeng,Yangjun Zhang,Dengjie Chen

Alkaline-earth segregation and low electronic conductivity restrict the practical applications of high-performance cathodes in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). To address these issues, a unique electrode structure with a sintered active backbone coated with an in situ-formed porous net-like PrCoO 3 (PCO) layer is developed. The effectiveness of this strategy is demonstrated using Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3−δ (BSCF), known for unprecedented oxygen reduction activity but with a great tendency to cause segregation and low electrical conductivity. This design leverages the beneficial characteristics of BSCF and PCO: the BSCF backbone provides high oxygen reduction activity, while the porous net-like PCO layer generated in situ offers high electrical conductivity. More importantly, this approach has the ability to eliminate potential surface segregation and even utilize the segregation by element interdiffusion to form a coating layer with high oxygen reduction activity. Therefore, the PCO-coated BSCF cathode (BSCF–PCO) offers impressive cell performance with a low area-specific polarization resistance of 0.02 Ω cm 2 at 600 °C using a symmetric cell and a maximum power density of 1835 mW cm −2 at 600 °C using an anode-supported fuel cell, which are superior to the cells with the state-of-the-art BSCF (i.e., 0.04 Ω cm 2 and 987 mW cm −2 ). Furthermore, this strategy significantly boosts the activity of other cathode materials such as Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Fe 0.8 Zn 0.2 O 3−δ , a typical cathode for PCFCs. This study thus provides a facile, universal in situ strategy for constructing high-performance cathodes by removing and transforming surface segregation for SOFCs and PCFCs.

Decorating La2NiO4+δ cathode with silver nanoparticles by infiltration: Enhanced catalytic effect vs negative etching effect

Yuwen Zhu,Shihang Guo,Jianqiu Zhu,Peng Du,Jie Pu,Linjuan Zhang,Donglin Han

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are a promising hydrogen economy-oriented technique for energy conversion, but the performance of cathodes needs to be improved due to the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction kinetics. Post-annealing the AgNO 3 solution-infiltrated La 2 NiO 4+δ (LNO) backbones leads to the formation of Ag nanoparticles-decorated LNO composite cathodes, with the oxygen adsorption ability enhanced significantly at the interface between Ag and LNO. Although the acidity of the AgNO 3 solution results in a negative etching effect, it is compensated or even overcome by the enhanced catalytic activity by generating Ag nanoparticles on the surface of LNO. Notably, LNO loaded with 1 wt% Ag achieves the optimal balance, showing the lowest polarization resistance of 0.25 Ωcm 2 at 650 °C, more than five times lower than 1.28 Ωcm 2 for the bare LNO.

Chlorine turned the cobalt-free oxygen electrode of SrTa0.1Fe0.9O3–δ perovskite oxide towards protonic ceramic fuel cells

Hao Qiu,Jing Zhao,Zhixian Liang,Mingzhuang Liang,Shanshan Jiang,Beibei Xiao,Wei Wang,Chao Su

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) have been deemed as the advanced technology for highly efficient energy conversion, while the practical application of this technology is limited by the oxygen electrode's sluggish reaction kinetics for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we propose facile anion engineering to develop an innovative oxide with a nominal composition of SrTa 0.1 Fe 0.9 O 2.95–δ Cl 0.05 (denoted as STFCl0.05). The ORR activity, hydration, and operation stability of STFCl0.05 are enhanced owing to doping chlorine. STFCl0.05 possesses low area-specific resistance (ASR) values in 3 vol % H 2 O-air (e.g., 0.12 Ω cm 2 at 650 °C), which are lower than those of SrTa 0.1 Fe 0.9 O 3–δ (STF). Furthermore, the resultant STFCl0.05 based-PCFCs at 650 °C can achieve a superior peak power density (PPD) value of 804 mW cm −2 under a wet H 2 atmosphere. More attractively, the symmetrical cell operates stably for 180 h, and the single cell operates for 200 h. This anion engineering may be rewarding for in-depth design for developing high-performance PCFCs oxygen electrodes in the future.

Synergistic Ba/Fe doping engineers a high-performance Pr1.5La0.5NiO4+δ-based protonic ceramic fuel cell cathode

Asim A. Mohammed,Zhenfei Li,Bo Liu,Dong Yan,Jian Li,Lichao Jia

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are highly efficient energy conversion devices that operate at relatively low temperatures. Enhancing their performance strongly relies on developing cathode materials with high electrocatalytic activity. This study presents a double-doped perovskite material, Pr 1.5 La 0.3 Ba 0.2 Ni 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 4+δ (PLBNF), where the electrochemical properties are significantly improved through composition and structural tuning. Comprehensive characterization confirms that the co-doping strategy effectively enhances the hydration capability, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, and operational stability. At 700 °C, the polarization resistances of the PLBNF cathode and the PLBNF-BZCYYb composite cathode are 0.11 and 0.08 Ω cm 2 , respectively, with peak power densities reaching 1012 and 1277 mW cm −2 . Fuel cell tests demonstrate excellent operational stability for the PLBNF-BZCYYb air electrode, indicating its strong potential for application in high-performance proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells. This work provides new insights into the development of efficient fuel cell materials and advances related energy technologies.

Structural tailoring of the current collector/anode dual-layer hollow fibers to enhance the performance of micro-tubular protonic ceramic fuel cells

Gonghe Tong,Furong Li,Yanbin Li,Zhigang Wang,Xiaoyao Tan

Micro-tubular protonic ceramic fuel cells (MT-PCFCs) offer significant advantages in energy utilization and storage, including high stability/durability and intermediate working temperature. Inefficient intraluminal current collection and costly fabrication processes are challenges for high-performance MT-PCFCs. Herein, hierarchically structured Ni/Ni–BaCe 0.7 Zr 0.1 Y 0.2 O 3-δ dual-layer hollow fibers (DLHFs) have been fabricated by the phase-inversion assisted co-spinning/co-sintering technique. By adjusting the viscosity of anode suspension, the DLHFs' microstructure is tailored and optimized for porosity, pore size, and thickness of collector layer and spongy region. After assembling MT-PCFCs, effects of DLHFs’ microstructure on fuel cell performance are investigated, revealing that a thinner spongy region reduces gas transfer resistance, lowers polarization impedance, and enhances fuel cell performance. A maximum power density of 687.1 mWcm −2 for the optimum MT-PCFC is reached at 700 °C. The innovative DLHF design enhances current collecting efficiency for MT-PCFCs and exhibits potential in other micro-tubular applications, such as hydrogen pumps and electrochemical reactors.

An efficient and robust triple-phase nanocomposite air electrode for reversible proton ceramic fuel cells

Xintao Wu,Jin Wang,Hanchen Tian,Wenlu Li,Cheng-Xin Li

Reversible protonic ceramic fuel cells (R-PCFCs) have attracted much attention because of their favorable energy conversion and storage technologies. However, the poor thermo-mechanical compatibility of the widely used cobalt-based electrodes with the electrolyte has greatly hindered the development of R-PCFCs. In this study, Pr x Ba 1-x Co 0.4 Ce 0.4 Y 0.2 O 3-σ was prepared as an air electrode for R-PCFCs using in situ self-assembly technique. BaCo 0.75 Y 0.25 O 2.55 (BCoY), PrBaCo 2 O 5.68 (PBC) and BaCe 0.8 Y 0.2 O 2.9 (BCeY) phases were formed. Among them, BCoY phase and PBC phase are good conductors of oxygen ions and electrons, BCeY phase is a good conductor of protons. The in situ self-assembly of these three phases promote the proton and oxygen ion conduction and transport, increase the active sites of ORR/OER, and further accelerates the ORR/OER reaction. The composite nano-electrode cells prepared by in situ self-assembly have an area specific resistance of 0.082 Ω·cm 2 at 700℃, and exhibit good performance in both fuel cell mode (FC) and electrolytic cell mode (EC), with a specific power density of 1.098 W cm −2 at 700 ℃ and a current density of −1.45 A cm −2 at 1.3 V and 700 ℃. The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of the electrode is 13.5 × 10 -6 K −1 which matched with that of electrolyte (∼14 × 10 -6 K −1 ). This effectively solves the problem of thermodynamic incompatibility between cobalt-based electrodes and electrolytes. This study provides a new strategy to achieve the thermo-mechanical stability compatibility between cobalt-based electrodes and electrolytes through one-step in-situ self-assembly.

Enhancing activity and stability of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ cathode by surface engineering with SrCoO3-δ nanoparticles in protonic ceramic fuel cells

Chenxiao Wang,Guangjun Zhang,Qiang Xue,Xiaoyu Zhang,Ting Chen,Lang Xu,Shaorong Wang

Surface engineering has been considered as a promising technology to enhance the cathode's oxygen reduction reaction kinetics (ORR) for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). In this work, the infiltrated SrCoO 3-δ (SCO) nanoparticles are incorporated onto the Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3-δ (BSCF) cathode via the surface engineering. The effect of infiltration volume on the distribution density of nanoparticles for electrochemical performance is investigated. The polarization resistance (R p ) of 2 μL SCO-BSCF symmetrical cell shows a value of 0.108 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C in dry air, and exhibit higher stability than the bare BSCF cathode in wet atmospheres. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that SCO-BSCF facilitates the oxygen hydrogenation process. Molecular dynamics (MD) also indicate that the SCO nanoparticles are beneficial to the oxygen adsorption. Furthermore, the PCFC with 2 μL SCO-BSCF cathode achieves the maximum power density of 938.55 mW cm −2 at 700 °C. These findings suggest that the 2 μL SCO-BSCF could potentially be utilized as a cathode material for PCFCs.

Enhanced performance and stability of perovskite through composition and phase regulation as cathode for protonic ceramic fuel cell

Yitong Li,Xucong Liu,Chenghao Yang,Ao Hu,Jing Wang,Jian Pu,Bo Chi

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) offer promising solutions for efficient and flexible energy conversion at intermediate temperatures (300–700 °C), addressing critical challenges of material degradation and high operational costs in solid oxide fuel cells. However, the development of cathode materials with enhanced proton conductivity, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, and long-term stability remains an imminent challenge. PrBaB 2 O 5 (B = transition metal) double perovskites oxides (DPOs) materials have emerged as high-potential alternatives due to the superior catalytic activity, high oxygen vacancy concentration, and good electronic conductivity at intermediate temperatures. Here, the PrBa 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 2-x Co x O 5+δ DPOs structure was designed with ordered arrangement of Pr and Ba cations. By adjusting the Fe/Co ratio in B-site, a transition from a simple cubic structure to a double perovskite structure was successfully achieved. The synthesized PrBa 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 1.6 O 5+δ (PBCX-16) with a double-perovskite structure demonstrates exceptional performance, including a peak power density of 1.511 W cm −2 at 700 °C and a remarkably low polarization impedance of 0.068 Ω cm 2 . Furthermore, the cell with PBCX-16 cathode can stably operate for up to 250 h at 600 °C. This work offers the innovative insights into the structural modulation of cathode materials and advances the development of cathodes for PCFCs.

Silver particle interlayer with high dislocation density for improving the joining of BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3-δ electrolyte and AISI 441 interconnect

Xiaoyang Wang,Chun Li,Qihan Zhou,Mingshen Li,Mushi Zheng,Junlei Qi,Xiaoqing Si,Jian Cao

One of the critical challenges for the protonic ceramic fuel cell stack is sealing electrolytes and interconnects. However, the traditional Ag CuO sealant will aggravate the oxidation along the interconnect surface and result in brittle compound layers at the BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3- δ (BZCYYb) electrolyte interface. The present work demonstrates that a silver particle interlayer with high dislocation density can be adopted to join BZCYYb electrolyte to the interconnect (AISI 441 stainless) in air instead of traditional Ag CuO sealant. Elevating temperatures result in a sufficient bonding at the Ag/BZCYYb interface, and a defect-free joint is obtained at 950 °C. Atomic bonding at Ag/BZCYYb interface is confirmed by TEM. Also, a dense and thin oxide layer (2–3 μm) is formed along the AISI 441 interface. Ag particles in the interlayer provide the main driving force for the sintering joining. The massive dislocations promote the recovery and recrystallization of the Ag interlayer, as well as the interdiffusion of BZCYYb/Ag. After aging in the wet oxidizing atmosphere at 600 °C for 300 h, joints remain intact and dense, indicating superior oxidation resistance and aging performance. Besides, the joint shear strength (25.3 MPa) is 59 % higher than that of the joint brazed by traditional Ag CuO.

Microstructure tailoring of the BaCe0.7Zr0.1Y0.2O3-δ(BCZY)/Ni-BCZY dual-layer hollow fibers by co-spinning/co-sintering for high performance micro-tubular protonic ceramic fuel cells (MT-PCFCs)

Gonghe Tong,Furong Li,Mingming Wang,Zhigang Wang,Xiaoyao Tan

Micro-tubular protonic ceramic fuel cells (MT-PCFCs) exhibit substantial advantages such as high energy conversion efficiency, large volumetric power density, and intermediate operating temperature. The performance of MT-PCFCs is highly dependent on the microstructure of the microtubes. In this study, BaCe 0.7 Zr 0.1 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BCZY)/Ni-BCZY (electrolyte/anode) dual-layer hollow fibers (DLHFs) are fabricated in a single step by co-spinning/co-sintering technique, which significantly reduces manufacturing time and cost. The relationship between the MT-PCFCs performance and the microstructure of the DLHFs is investigated. By adjusting the cermet powder content and the spinning rate, the microstructure of DLHFs is tailored and optimized to achieve the best performance for the MT-PCFCs. Experimental results indicate that the anode structure with thick finger-like voids inside and thin sponge-like interlayer closely attached to the thin electrolyte film is favorable to obtain high performance MT-PCFCs. A maximum power density of 554.5 mW cm -2 for the optimal MT-PCFC is achieved at 700 ℃.
