Comparison of UV and UV-LED activated sodium percarbonate for the degradation of O-desmethylvenlafaxine

Jing Deng,Anhong Cai,Xiao Ling,Qian Sun,Tianxin Zhu,Qingsong Li,Xueyan Li,Weizhu Chen

As an active metabolite of venlafaxine and emerging antidepressant, O-desmethylvenlafaxine (ODVEN) was widely detected in different water bodies, which caused potential harm to human health and environmental safety. In this study, the comparative work on the ODVEN degradation by UV (254 nm) and UV-LED (275 nm) activated sodium percarbonate (SPC) systems was systematically performed. The higher removal rate of ODVEN can be achieved under UV-LED direct photolysis (14.99%) than UV direct photolysis (4.57%) due to the higher values of photolysis coefficient at the wavelength 275 nm. Significant synergistic effects were observed in the UV/SPC (80.38%) and UV-LED/SPC (53.57%) systems and the former exhibited better performance for the elimination of ODVEN. The degradation of ODVEN all followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics well in these processes, and the pseudo-first-order rate constant ( k obs ) increased with increasing SPC concentration. Radicals quenching experiments demonstrated that both ·OH and CO 3 · − were involved in the degradation of ODVEN and the second-order rate constant of ODVEN with CO 3 · − (1.58 × 10 8 (mol/L) −1 sec −1 ) was reported for the first time based on competitive kinetic method. The introduction of HA, Cl − , NO 3 − and HCO 3 − inhibited the ODVEN degradation to varying degrees in the both processes. According to quantum chemical calculation, radical addition at the ortho-position of the phenolic hydroxyl group was confirmed to be the main reaction pathways for the oxidation of ODVEN by ·OH. In addition, the oxidation of ODVEN may involve the demethylation, H-abstraction, OH-addition and C-N bond cleavage. Eventually, the UV-LED/SPC process was considered to be more cost-effective compared to the UV/SPC process, although the UV/SPC process possessed a higher removal rate of ODVEN.

Degradation of Anthraquinone dye wastewater by sodium percarbonate with CoO heterogeneous activation

Haoyu Fan,Yanzhao Xia,Cuizhen Sun,Rupeng Liu,Feiyong Chen,Meng Li,Weichen Zhu,Xinpeng Yang,Zhen Zhang

BACKGROUND Anthraquinone dyes have an anthraquinone structure as their nucleus, with one or more substituents forming different organic dyes. Anthraquinone dyes have a complex structure that allows them to exist stably in water environment, but also makes them more toxic than azo dyes. This results in varying degrees of harm to both humans and the environment as a result of residual dyes in the water or on the material’ surface. Sodium percarbonate (SPC) is a highly promising oxidant due to its green end product. Therefore, in this study, the catalytic performance and kinetic study of cobalt oxide (CoO) on SPC under different conditions were systematically investigated using RB19 as the target pollutant. The Box–Behnken Design (BBD) model was used to model the degradation of RB19 by CoO/SPC system, which gives the basis for practical application. The types of reactive oxygen species that effectively degrade RB19 and the potential degradation mechanism of the CoO/SPC system were revealed. At the same time, the CoO/SPC system was evaluated in terms of its practicality. RESULTS In this work, the activation of SPC using CoO towards reactive blue 19 (RB19) degradation was explored. Experimental results showed that nearly 93.8% of RB19 could be removed within 30 min using 1 mmol L −1 SPC and 30 mg L −1 CoO. The three-factor interaction effects of SPC concentration, CoO dosage and initial pH were investigated. The BBD model was set up to obtain the optimum working conditions of 1.039 mmol L −1 SPC, 33.35 mg L −1 CoO and the initial pH of 7.82, which gave a degradation rate of 95.372%. Additionally, it was confirmed that the solubility of Co 2+ is consistently <150 μg L −1 , meeting the emission standard (1 ppm). The presence of Cl − , NO 3– , and HA had a similar profile, with a slight promoting effect in small amounts and an inhibitory effect when introduced in excess. The introduction of SO 4 2– had a negligible effect on RB19 degradation, whereas the presence of HCO 3 − produced a slight inhibitory effect. Furthermore, the presence of PO 4 3– showed a strong inhibitory effect. The CoO/SPC system is suitable for other organic dyes (32.7%–100%) and antibiotics (97.1–100%). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching experiments confirmed the presence and relative contribution of free radicals in the CoO/SPC system as CO 3 •- (88.12%) >O 2 •- (51.11%) >1O 2 (37.21%) >•OH (5.27%) > SPC (3.33%) >CoO (0.09%). It has been confirmed that CoO activates SPC through electron transfer. CONCLUSION The present study describes a less time-consuming, and more efficient method of treating anthraquinone dye wastewater that requires less oxidizer and catalyst, making it more economical. This proposes a straightforward, cost-effective and efficient technique using SPC triggered by transition metal oxides. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Degradation of ethylbenzene in aqueous solution by sodium percarbonate activated with EDDS–Fe(III) complex

Hang Cui,Xiaogang Gu,Shuguang Lu,Xiaori Fu,Xiang Zhang,George Y. Fu,Zhaofu Qiu,Qian Sui

Ethylbenzene (EB) degradation performance in (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N-disuccinic acid (EDDS) chelated Fe(III) activated sodium percarbonate (SPC) system was investigated in this study. The effects of various factors, such as the dosages of SPC and Fe(III), molar ratio of EDDS/Fe(III), anions (Cl − , HCO 3 − , SO 4 2− , and NO 3 − ) concentration, natural organic matters (NOM), and initial solution pH were evaluated. The results showed that the addition of EDDS remarkably improved the EB removal in Fe(III)/SPC system. Both HCO 3 − anions and NOM had significantly inhibitive effect, while the influence of SO 4 2− , Cl − and NO 3 − could be negligible on EB degradation. The EB removal was inhibited at extremely low and high initial solution pH. Moreover, the results of free radical probe tests, scavenger tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detection indicated that OH was the predominant species responsible for EB degradation even though both OH and O 2 − were generated in the SPC/EDDS–Fe(III) system. The oxidation products were analyzed and possible EB degradation pathways were proposed. In conclusion, this study provides an important insight into the application of SPC/EDDS–Fe(III) system in the removal of EB contaminant, especially for in situ remediation of BTEX-contaminated groundwater.

Activation of sodium percarbonate by vanadium for the degradation of aniline in water: Mechanism and identification of reactive species

Li Li,Jun Huang,Xuebin Hu,Sai Zhang,Qin Dai,Hongxiang Chai,Li Gu

Sodium percarbonate (SPC)-based advanced oxidation process has been applied to the wastewater treatment in recent years. In the present study, a novel catalyst utilization of vanadium(V) was investigated for the activation of SPC for aniline degradation. The mechanism of SPC activation by V(IV) was demonstrated, and the major free radicals were identified through scavenging tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. The performance of aniline degradation was evaluated in the V(IV)/H 2 O 2 and V(IV)/H 2 O 2 /Na 2 CO 3 systems and compared with that of the V(IV)/SPC system. The influences of initial pH and effects of inorganic anions were also studied. The results show that aniline could be decomposed efficiently by SPC activated with V(IV) and the degradation efficiency increased with the increase in V(IV) and SPC dosage. O 2 − , CO 3 − , and OH were found to participate in aniline degradation, and O 2 − and CO 3 − were confirmed to be the predominant species. The decomposition of aniline was enhanced when equal amount of H 2 O 2 was utilized instead of SPC under acidic condition while a comparative behavior was achieved in the V(IV)/H 2 O 2 /Na 2 CO 3 system. Furthermore, aniline degradation was not impacted significantly by the initial pH and addition of Cl − , SO 4 2− and NO 3 − , while HCO 3 − led to a betterment of aniline removal. These results indicate that the V(IV)/SPC system is an effective and promising approach for the removal of aniline from water for its feasibility and stability, which achieves eliminating contaminants by another waste.

Trichloroethylene degradation performance in aqueous solution by Fe(II) activated sodium percarbonate in the presence of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate

Jingyao Huang,Muhammad Danish,Xihao Jiang,Ping Tang,Qian Sui,Zhaofu Qiu,Shuguang Lyu

The performance of trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation by sodium percarbonate (SPC) activated with Fe(II) in the presence of 3.0 g/L sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as well as the role of SDS in the SPC/Fe(II) system was investigated since SDS is a common surfactant used in groundwater remediation for improving TCE dissolution to the aqueous phase. The results showed that though the introduction of SDS could inhibit the TCE degradation, the inhibiting effect was less with the increasing SDS dose. In the presence of SDS, TCE could be completely removed with the SPC/Fe(II)/TCE molar ratio of 40/80/1. Experiments with free radical probe compounds and radical scavengers elucidated that TCE was mainly oxidized by both HO· and . A weakly acidic environment was more favorable to TCE degradation. Nevertheless, at a high concentration had a strongly inhibitive effect on the TCE degradation but the influence of Cl − was negligible. Finally, the excellent TCE degradation achieved in actual groundwater demonstrated that Fe(II) activated SPC technique was applicable in the remediation of TCE contaminated groundwater in the presence of SDS. Practitioner points The effects of SDS were evaluated SPC/Fe(II)/SDS system applied to remediate TCE The mechanism of HO· and generation had been investigated Cl − and affected TCE degradation at different levels The performance of TCE removal in actual groundwater had been studied

Rhombic dodecahedral ZIF-8-supported CuFe2O4 triggers sodium percarbonate activation for enhanced sulfonamide antibiotics degradation: Synergistic roles of heterostructure and photocatalytic mechanisms

Junge Xu,Weihao Yu,Ziwei Zhang,Fubin Deng,Shengkong Wang,Rusen Zou,Yingmu Wang,Baoling Yuan

Pollution from extensive sulfonamide antibiotic use is a critical research focus, particularly in the remediation of these antibiotics using composite materials. This study employed a CuFe 2 O 4 /ZIF-8 composite to activate sodium percarbonate (SPC) for the photo-Fenton-like degradation of the sulfonamide antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The optimal conditions for SMX degradation were determined using the CuFe 2 O 4 /ZIF-8/SPC/Vis system: a ZIF-8 composite ratio of 40 %, catalyst dosage of 0.15 g/L, SPC concentration of 0.8 mM, and initial pH of 3.0, achieving complete SMX removal within 30 min. After five cycle tests, the leaching rates of copper and iron ions were 0.179 mg/L and 0.376 mg/L, respectively, significantly lower compared to the use of CuFe 2 O 4 alone as the catalyst (Cu: 0.46 mg/L, Fe: 1.43 mg/L). The radicals present in the system were identified, with their contribution rates ranked from highest to lowest as follows: ·OH > h + > ·O 2 – > CO 3 · - > 1 O 2 . Further mechanistic investigations revealed that the heterogeneous structures in CuFe 2 O 4 /ZIF-8 enhanced the efficiency of the photo-Fenton-like reaction by facilitating electron transfer. This study introduced an innovative approach for antibiotic treatment using the CuFe 2 O 4 /ZIF-8 composite under visible light irradiation and broadened the technical framework of SPC-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for treating wastewater.

The Degradation of Sulfamethoxazole via the Fe2+/Ultraviolet/Sodium Percarbonate Advanced Oxidation Process: Performance, Mechanism, and Back-Propagate–Artificial Neural Network Prediction Model

Juxiang Chen,Chong Ruan,Wanying Xie,Caiqiong Dai,Yuqiong Gao,Zhenliang Liao,Naiyun Gao

The degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) via the Fe2+/Ultraviolet (UV)/sodium percarbonate (SPC) system was comprehensively investigated in this study, including the performance optimization, degradation mechanism, and predicting models. The degradation condition of SMX was optimized, and it was found that appropriate amounts ofCFe2+(10~30 μM) andCSPC(10 μM) under an acidic condition (pH = 4~6) were in favor of a higher degradation rate. According to probe compound experiments, it was considerable that∙OHand∙CO3−was the primary and subordinate free radical in SMX degradation, andk∙OH,SMXmaintained two times more than that ofk∙CO3−,SMX, especially under acidic conditions. The UV direct photolysis and other active intermediates were also responsible for the SMX degradation. These active intermediates were produced via the Fe2+/UV/SPC system, involving∙HO2,HCO4−,∙O2−, or1O2. Furthermore, when typical anions co-existed, the degradation of SMX was negatively influenced, owing toHCO3−andCO32−possibly consuming∙OHor H2O2to compete with SMX. In addition, the prediction model was successfully established via the back-propagate artificial neural network (BP-ANN) method. The degradation rate of SMX was well forecasted via the Back-Propagate–Artificial Neural Network (BP-ANN) model, which was expressed asYpre=tanh(tanh(xiWih)Who). The BP-ANN model reflected the relative importance of influence factors well, which was pH >t>CFe2+≈CSPC. Compared to the response surface method Box–Behnken design (RSM-BBD) model (R2= 0.9765, relative error = 3.08%), the BP-ANN model showed higher prediction accuracy (R2= 0.9971) and lower error (1.17%) in SMX degradation via the Fe2+/UV/SPC system. These findings help us to understand, in-depth, the degradation mechanism of SMX; meanwhile, they are conducive to promoting the development of the Fe2+/UV/SPC system in SMX degradation, especially in some practical engineering cases.

Improving membrane distillation performance by Fe(II) activated sodium percarbonate oxidation during the treatment of shale gas produced water

Suhua Gu,Fangshu Qu,Dan Qu,Zhongsen Yan,Yuchuan Meng,Ying Liang,Haiqing Chang,Heng Liang

Membrane distillation (MD) offers promise for recycling shale gas produced water (SGPW), while membrane fouling is still a major obstacle in standalone MD. Herein, sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidation was proposed as MD pretreatment, and the performance of the single MD, SPC-MD hybrid process and Fe(II)/SPC-MD hybrid process for SGPW treatment were systematically evaluated. Results showed that compared to raw SGPW, the application of SPC and Fe(II)/SPC led to the decrease of the fluorescent organics by 28.54 % and 54.52 %, respectively. The hydrophobic fraction decreased from 52.75 % in raw SGPW to 37.70 % and 27.20 % for SPC and Fe(II)/SPC, respectively, and the MD normalized flux increased from 0.19 in treating raw SGPW to 0.65 and 0.81, respectively. The superiority of SPC oxidation in reducing the deposited membrane foulants and restoring membrane properties was further confirmed through scanning electron microscopy observation, attenuated total reflection fourier transform infrared, water contact angle and surface tension analyses of fouled membranes. Correlation analysis revealed that hydrophobic/hydrophilic matters and fluorescent organics in SGPW took a crucial role in MD fouling. The mechanism of MD fouling mitigation by Fe(II)/SPC oxidation was attributed to the decrease in concentrations and hydrophobicity of organic by synergistic oxidation, coagulation and adsorption.

Degradation of chlorinated organic solvents in aqueous percarbonate system using zeolite supported nano zero valent iron (Z-nZVI) composite

Danish Muhammad,Gu Xiaogang,Lu Shuguang,Naqvi Muhammad

Chlorinated organic solvents (COSs) are extensively detected in contaminated soil and groundwater that pose long-term threats to human life and environment. In order to degrade COSs effectively, a novel catalytic composite of natural zeolite-supported nano zero valent iron (Z-nZVI) was synthesized in this study. The performance of Z-nZVI-catalyzed sodium percarbonate (SPC) in a heterogeneous Fenton-like system was investigated for the degradation of COSs such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) and trichloroethylene (TCE). The surface characteristics and morphology of the Z-nZVI composite were tested using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Total pore volume, specific surface area, and pore size of the natural zeolite and the Z-nZVI composite were measured using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. SEM and TEM analysis showed significant elimination of aggregation and well dispersion of iron nano particles on the framework of natural zeolite. The BET N 2 measurement analysis indicated that the surface area of the Z-nZVI composite was 72.3 m 2 /g, much larger than that of the natural zeolite (0.61 m 2 /g). For the contaminant analysis, the samples were extracted with n-hexane and analyzed through gas chromatograph. The degradation of 1,1,1-TCA and TCE in the Z-nZVI-catalyzed percarbonate system were 48 and 39 % respectively, while strong augmentation was observed up to 83 and 99 %, respectively, by adding the reducing agent (RA), hydroxyl amine (NH 2 OH•HCl). Probe tests validated the presence of OH ● and O 2 ●– which were responsible for 1,1,1-TCA and TCE degradation, whereas both free radicals were strengthened with the addition of RA. In conclusion, the Z-nZVI/SPC oxidation with reducing agent shows potential technique for degradation of groundwater contaminated by 1,1,1-TCA and TCE.

Degradation of contaminants of emerging concern in UV/Sodium percarbonate Process: Kinetic understanding of carbonate radical and energy consumption evaluation

Yuanxi Huang,Lingjun Bu,Yangtao Wu,Shumin Zhu,Shiqing Zhou,Zhou Shi,Dionysios D. Dionysiou

UV/sodium percarbonate (UV/SPC) advanced oxidation process is an efficient and green technology to remove contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), with the simultaneous formation of hydroxyl radical ( • OH) and carbonate radical (CO 3 •− ). This study investigated the degradation of eight CECs in UV/SPC process, including phenol, atrazine, bisphenol A, ibuprofen, sulfadiazine, acetaminophen, carbamazepine, and diuron. A model was established to simulate the experimental results, which shows that both • OH and CO 3 •− played crucial roles in UV/SPC process, and the steady-state concentrations of CO 3 •− were much higher than that of • OH. The higher concentration compensates for the low reactivity of CO 3 •− with CECs and the loss of • OH depleting by CO 3 •− . Also, the Hammett constants decreased linearly with increasing natural logarithms of rate constants, indicating the selectivity of CO 3 •− with electron-donating substituents. In real water, CEC degradation was significantly inhibited due to the competition for light absorption from background compounds and scavenging of free radicals, especially CO 3 •− , by water matrix. Further, demethylation, decarbonylation, hydroxylation, amino oxidation, and quinonization were proposed as the main reactions for CEC degradation in UV/SPC process. The minimum electrical energy per order (EE/O) was calculated as 0.152 kWh m −3 , with SPC dose of 0.138 mM and UV intensity of 2.02 × 10 -7 Einstein L −1 s −1 .

Comparison of carbamazepine degradation by UV-activated percarbonate and peracetic acid processes: Performance, coexisting matrices, and transformation pathway

Suiqin Yang,Liang He,Shiquan Sun,Fei Yang,Changxuan Wu,Diqi Xiao,Jinting Wang,Yang Gao,Wei Zhang,Lean Zhou,Julong Sun,Zhengqian Liu,Yuhong Cui

The emergence of novel wastewater treatment technologies has intensified the need to systematically compare and evaluate their performance. Based on an environmentally relevant experimental design, this study represents the systematic comparison of two advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), sodium percarbonate (SPC)-based and peracetic acid (PAA)-based AOPs, for the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater, as they have been proposed as potential alternatives to H 2 O 2 -based AOPs. The efficacy of UV-activated SPC (UV/SPC) and PAA (UV/PAA) processes was tested in ultrapure water and three actual water samples, using carbamazepine (CBZ) as a representative organic pollutant. In ultrapure water, the degradation rate of CBZ in the UV/SPC process is 1.4 times higher than in the UV/PAA process. UV/SPC is more effective in the presence of Cl − (5–25 mM) and fulvic acid (2–10 mg/L) than UV/PAA, while UV/PAA exhibits more excellent resistance to HCO 3 − (5–25 mM). In actual water samples, the CBZ degradation rates are close in these two processes, with UV/PAA slightly faster. Product analyses show similar transformation pathways for CBZ in two processes, probably because they both feature HO • as the dominant active species (contributing > 98 %). This study provides fundamental data for a comprehensive understanding of these two AOPs, which will be beneficial in guiding their further development.

Roles of hydroxyl and carbonate radicals in bisphenol a degradation via a nanoscale zero-valent iron/percarbonate system: influencing factors and mechanisms

Yulun Xiao,Xiang Liu,Ying Huang,Wei Kang,Zhen Wang,Han Zheng

In this work, nanoscale-zero-valent iron (nZVI) was applied to activate sodium percarbonate (SPC) to eliminate bisphenol A (BPA), which poses a risk to ecological and human health as a typical endocrine disruptor. The influence of nZVI loading, SPC dosing, initial pH, and the presence of inorganic anions (including Cl−, HPO42−, NO3− and NO2−) and humic acid on BPA removal by the nZVI/SPC system were investigated. Based on the scavenger test results, ˙OH and CO3˙− participated in the degradation of BPA, and ˙OH was illustrated to be the dominant radical. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis suggested that surface iron oxide generation, electron transfer and Fe2+ release were the main processes of the SPC activation by nZVI. Moreover, BPA transformation products were detected by LC-MS allowing the proposal of a possible degradation pathway of BPA. Along with the degradation of the parent compound BPA, the total organic carbon (TOC) gradually decreased, while the bio-toxicity increased at the initial stage of the reaction (0–3 min) and then decreased to a lower level rapidly at 20 min. Overall, this study evidenced the feasibility of the nZVI/SPC system to efficiently degrade BPA, broadening the applications of nZVI in wastewater treatment.
