Hydrogels have attracted considerable interest in developing flexible bioelectronics such as wearable devices, brain–machine interface products, and health-monitoring sensors. However, these bioelectronics are always challenged by microbial contamination, which frequently reduces their service life and durability due to a lack of antibacterial property. Herein, we report a class of inherently antibacterial conductive hydrogels (ACGs) as bioelectronics for motion and temperature detection. The ACGs were composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) via a two-step polymerization strategy, which increased the crosslink density for enhanced mechanical properties. The introduction of AgNWs improved the conductivity of ACGs and endowed them with excellent antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria. Meanwhile, pNIPAM existed in ACGs and exhibited a thermal responsive behavior, thereby inducing sharp changes in their conductivity around body temperature, which was successfully employed to assemble a temperature alarm. Moreover, ACG-based sensors exhibited excellent sensitivity (within a small strain of 5%) and the capability of capturing various motion signals (finger bending, elbow bending, and even throat vibrating). Benefiting from the superiority of ACG-based sensors, we further demonstrated a wearable wireless system for the remote control of a vehicle, which is expected to help disabled people in the future.

The regulation of the catalytic activities of DNAzymes is of great significance for their biosensing and biomedical applications. Herein, thermoregulation of the catalytic activity of DNAzyme is achieved through the immobilization of DNAzymes into the crosslinked polymeric matrix of poly- N -isopropylacrylamide (pNIPAM) microgels prepared with a microfluidic device. At a temperature lower than the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of pNIPAM, the immobilized DNAzymes exhibit lower catalytic performance due to the restricted entry of DNA substrates into the polymeric networks; while at a temperature higher than the LCST, the hydrophilic DNAzyme structures are exposed to exhibit high catalytic activity due to the shrinking of the pNIPAM networks. Results show a more than 60% of increase in catalytic activity by raising the temperature from 29 to 34 ° C and reversible regulation of the DNAzyme catalytic activity is achieved by cyclic raising and lowering of the solution temperature. Through a simple heating-centrifugation process, the DNAzyme/pNIPAM microgels can be recycled for further applications. Moreover, by introducing photothermal MXene nanosheets, the remote control of the catalytic activity of the DNAzyme by near-infrared light irradiation is achieved. These DNAzyme/pNIPAM microgels as low-cost, stable, reversible, and recyclable biocatalyst may have potential in biosensing and biomedical applications.

Advancement in human-robot interaction (HRI) is essential for the development of intelligent robots, but there lack paradigms to integrate remote control and tactile sensing for an ideal HRI. In this study, inspired by the platypus beak sense, we propose a bionic electro-mechanosensory finger (EM-Finger) synergizing triboelectric and visuotactile sensing for remote control and tactile perception . A triboelectric sensor array made of a patterned liquid-metal-polymer conductive (LMPC) layer encodes both touchless and tactile interactions with external objects into voltage signals in the air, and responds to electrical stimuli underwater for amphibious wireless communication . Besides, a three-dimensional finger-shaped visuotactile sensing system with the same LMPC layer as a reflector measures contact-induced deformation through marker detection and tracking methods. A bioinspired bimodal deep learning algorithm implements data fusion of triboelectric and visuotactile signals and achieves the classification of 18 common material types under varying contact forces with an accuracy of 94.4 %. The amphibious wireless communication capability of the triboelectric sensor array enables touchless HRI in the air and underwater, even in the presence of obstacles, while the whole system realizes high-resolution tactile sensing. By naturally integrating remote contorl and tactile sensing, the proposed EM-Finger could pave the way for enhanced HRI in machine intelligence.

Integration of functional nanomaterials into 3D printing polymers expands the versatility of 4D printing. However, high performance and multi-UV curable materials adaptable nanoparticles for 4D printing are still urgently needed to avoid printing complications and deformation limitations caused by high filler loadings. Here, high performance oxygen-deficient tungsten oxide nanoparticles (WO 3-x NPs) are synthesized via a straightforward hydrothermal method, and the resulting nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit excellent photothermal property which can rapidly increase from room temperature to 562.6 °C in less than 2 s via near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. Moreover, these NPs can also be well dispersed in a wide range of photocurable polymers, such as UV curable hydrogel, shape memory polymer, and dual-curing polymer, forming variety of nanocomposite systems. The formed nanocomposite systems can be manufactured into complex 3D structures via digital light processing based 4D printing. Just trace WO 3-x NPs in nanocomposite systems (<2 wt‰) can help realize the controllable photothermal properties of the printed structures, which are capable of arbitrary spatial deformation, remote-controlled distortion, and on-demand reinforcement in response to NIR irradiation, presenting a succinct and impactful approach to broadening the application scope of light-controlled DLP-based 4D printing.
