Photoresponsive wood composite for photoluminescence and ultraviolet absorption

Yingying Li,Xue Gu,He Gao,Jian Li

Transparent wood has received much attention for construction applications due to its good mechanical properties, optical properties, and ideal thermal insulation. Since ultraviolet light is one of the most significant environmental stress agents for human skin, ultraviolet absorbing transparent wood composite will be highly desirable. Herein, ultraviolet absorbing photoluminescence wood composite was obtained by immersing wood templates into photoresponsive polymer. The injected substances were well polymerized in wood cell lumen, resulting in good dimensional stability, mechanical properties, and thermal stability. In addition, the sample displayed a good photoluminescence process, during which it could intercept and absorb high-intensity ultraviolet light. The unique properties of the ultraviolet absorbing photoluminescence wood composite could potentially be applied in building, furniture, windows, sensor, and security materials.

Hydrostable reconstructed wood with transparency, Excellent ultraviolet-blocking performance, and photothermal conversion ability

Hao Sun,Hongjie Bi,Zechun Ren,Xinyuan Zhou,Tong Ji,Min Xu,Zhenhua Huang,Liping Cai

Natural wood has been used as building components for thousands of years due to its abundance, high mechanical strength , and durability. However, suboptimal mechanical performance, moisture sensitivity, and inferior optical performance have severely limited its further development and application prospects. Herein, we fabricated a novel full-wood material based on process of delignification , TEMPO-oxidation, in situ lignin deposition, and densification . The resulting reconstructed wood exhibited excellent optical properties , including ultraviolet-blocking, visible-light transparency, and photothermal conversion ability. Moreover, the densified structure integrated the high mechanical strength (high longitudinal tensile strength of 196.8 MPa and Young's modulus of 24.5 GPa) with significantly high resistance to water. The novel concept of reconstructed wood proposed in this study provides new horizons and design guidance for applications in green energy-efficient buildings, photothermal conversion apparatus, decorative materials, and optical devices.

A top-down strategy for the preparation of flame retardant, robust, and transparent wood-derived films

Lingyue Zhou,Wenyan Guo,Liren Zhang,Wenbo Che,Youming Yu

Transparent wood is a promising material with many advantages, including high optical transmittance, adjustable optical haze, and excellent mechanical properties. However, the manufacture of transparent wood always requires polymer filling, which affects its sustainability; the flammability of transparent wood also limits its development and application in more fields. Herein, a flame retardant transparent wood film (FR-TWF) was prepared by a top-down chemical treatment. Delignification and TEMPO-mediated oxidation can effectively remove lignin from natural wood and introduce carboxyl groups into the cellulose for further chelation with Al ions. Then, FR-TWF was obtained through self-densification by forming fully collapsed wood cell walls and elastic lumen after drying. The obtained FR-TWF had high optical transmittance (∼76.1%) and haze (∼75.2%); its tensile strength reached 354.3 MPa, exceeding most existing plastic films. Compared with natural wood, the peak of heat release rate and total heat release of FR-TWF decreased by 91.4% and 77.1%, respectively. The excellent flame retardant property of FR-TWF is attributed to the generation of graphitized carbon layers during combustion and the release of more water vapor at high temperatures. Furthermore, the FR-TWF merits being price moderate, sustainable, and biodegradable, which can be widely used in flexible device substrates or optical management devices.

Synthesis of lignin-based resin and fabrication of sustainable transparent wood based on bio-recycling concept

Nan Pan,Xueru Sheng,Ruisen Shi,Haiyuan Jia,Jian Zhang,Na Li,Haiqiang Shi,Bing Wang,Qingwei Ping

Transparent wood (TW) has attracted much attention in the field of energy saving building structural materials because of its high light transmittance, good thermal insulation performance and good toughness. However, the polymeric resins used in the present study to impregnate lignin-based wood templates are usually derived from petroleum-based chemical resources, which pose a fatal threat to human beings both in terms of consuming large amounts of resources and causing environmental pollution problems. It is therefore important to develop alternatives to petroleum-derived chemicals in renewable natural resources . Here, we report a green and sustainable TW production process based on the bio-recycling concept. Lignin-based sustainable resin (LSR) was prepared from waste lignin produced during delignification by polymerization of guaiacol. At the same time, according to FT-IR and NMR data analysis combined with previous studies, the synthesis mechanism of LSR was proposed, and this result provided a reference for bio-based resins made from biomass materials. The prepared lignin-based sustainable transparent wood (LSTW) has good light transmittance and good dimensional stability. In addition, the LSTW also shows good thermal insulation and indoor temperature regulation capabilities compared with the common glass.

Flexible Transparent Sliced Veneer for Alternating Current Electroluminescent Devices

Tao Zhang,Pei Yang,Yanzhen Li,Yizhong Cao,Yunlei Zhou,Minzhi Chen,Ziqi Zhu,Weimin Chen,Xiaoyan Zhou

Flexible alternating current electroluminescent (ACEL) devices based on nanocellulose-derived transparent films have received a great deal of attention due to their numerous merits. However, the fabrication of nanocellulose-based functional materials usually requires complex treatments. Herein, we used transparent sliced veneer (TV) derived from commercial birch wood to fabricate ACEL devices. In comparison to nanocellulose-based transparent films, the preparation of TV is faster and cheaper. The total transmittance achieved a considerable value (up to 86%) compared to that of cellulose-based transparent films. To obtain a conductive transparent wood composite film, silver nanowires (AgNWs) were deposited on the TV substrate using a spray gun. The transmittance was 79.5% at an AgNWs area density of 450 mg/m2, and it displayed a low sheet resistance of 3 Ω sq–1. Finally, we successfully fabricated an ACEL device based on the conductive TV. The flexible transparent veneer-based alternating current electroluminescent (WACEL) device possessed waterproofing properties without the need for additional sealing. The luminance of the WACEL device approached a maximum value of 18.36 cd/m2 at a voltage of 220 V (frequency at 1k Hz), demonstrating its great potential for applications in signal expression and ambient lighting.

A super-flexible and transparent wood film/silver nanowire electrode for optical and capacitive dual-mode sensing wood-based electronic skin

Qiheng Tang,Miao Zou,Liang Chang,Wenjing Guo

Flexible electronic skin (e-skin) with multimode broad-range pressure sensing and high sensitivity is highly desirable for robotics, artificial intelligence and human–machine interaction applications. Most research on e-skin has focused on improving the sensitivity of sensing layers interfaced with an electronic output device, with only a limited number of studies focused on user interfaces based on a human-readable output. Moreover, naturally degradable materials are receiving increasing attention for e-skin. Herein, inspired by a bioluminescent noctiluca, a wood-based e-skin with instrument- and naked eye-readable characteristics was sandwich assembled using silver nanowires and a super-flexible transparent wood (STW) film as an electrode and a pyramidal microstructure polydimethlysiloxane film as a stimuli-responsive layer. The electrode was prepared by depositing silver nanowires on the surface of the STW film through a Meyer rod coating method. The film demonstrated outstanding performance with high transmittance (91.4%), a small curvature radius (2 mm) and excellent sheet resistance stability even after greater than 1500 bending cycles. The e-skin showed notable changes in electroluminescence from 0 to 150 kPa (where humans feel pain) and the sensitivity remains larger than 0.15 kPa −1 over the broad pressure range. The sensitivity in capacitance exhibited high sensitivity at 1.01 kPa −1 in the low-pressure regime, meanwhile, the luminescence exhibited a maximum value at 1.28 kPa −1 at medium pressure. Furthermore, the e-skin accurately mapped the spatial distribution of static and dynamic pressures through optical sensing. This work not only improves the sustainable development of materials in electrodes but also illustrates the potential of utilizing natural wood in high value-added e-skin.

Enable solar regulation and thermal insulation improvement of transparent wood with oriented VO2-Cellulose fiber

Ting-Hui Fan,Hao-Qiang Pang,Sheng-Nan Zhang,Guang Lei Yu,Xi Wu

Compared to commercial glass, transparent wood-based windows is provided with better thermal insulation performance, and more comparable solar transmittance. However, transparent wood cannot dynamically regulate solar light switching between summer and winter, and its insulation is worth improving but without a clear micron thermal mechanism model. Herein, a thermochromic and insulation transparent window composed of oriented cellulose attached by VO 2 nanoparticles was prepared, and its thermal conductivity model of micron cellulose, VO 2 nanoparticles, and PMMA polymer was established. The results show that the extinction coefficient of Cell-wall@VO 2 @PMMA is improved to 21.68 % when the VO 2 occurs phase change at near-infrared spectra. The optimal angle of cellulose for comprehensive insulation performance of blocking near-infrared and heat conduction equals 60°. Besides, the transparent wood sample demonstrates a low thermal conductivity of Cell-wall@VO 2 @PMMA, reaching to 0.175 W·m −1 ·K −1 , as well as reducing the temperature difference by 36.8 %. This paper provides a novelty heat transfer perspective for designing thermochromic transparent cellulose with excellent insulation performance in the future.

Mechanically strong, transparent, and biodegradable wood-derived film

Hao Sun,Tong Ji,Xinyuan Zhou,Hongjie Bi,Min Xu,Zhenhua Huang,Liping Cai

Plastics with excellent mechanical flexibility and optical properties have been widely used as substrates in flexible electronics and optoelectronics. However, the intrinsic conflicts among the poor accessibility and adverse environmental impacts limit the further development of plastics. Development of sustainable alternatives with competitive properties to replace synthetic plastics is urgently needed. Here, we propose a feasible and effective strategy with a micro/nanoscale structure design to convert bulk natural wood into a high-performance wood film with a high optical transmittance (77% at 550 nm) and high haze (73.5%). The resulting transparent wood films (TWF) exhibited a high tensile strength of 426 MPa. Moreover, the TWF had a lower environmental impact as it can be easily recycled and biodegraded under natural conditions. The unique characteristics make it a low-cost, high-performance, sustainable, and biodegradable alternative for flexible electronics, humidity sensors, and optical management devices.

Preparation of sustainable transparent wood with glucose and phenol derived resin

Ruisen Shi,Xueru Sheng,Haiyuan Jia,Jian Zhang,Na Li,Haiqiang Shi,Meihong Niu,Qingwei Ping

Transparent wood (TW) is a novel biomass-derived composites with potential applications in many areas. In general, the preparation of TW usually involves two steps: (1) the delignification treatment of the wood and (2) the impregnation of the delignified wood (DW) with the resin. However, the resins used for the impregnation still need to be produced from traditional petrochemical materials, which does not fit the concept of green chemistry and carbon neutrality. In this work, a new type of the sustainable transparent wood (STW) was fabricated with the sustainable PG resin and the balsa wood. PG resin was obtained by the polymerization of the phenol and glucose, which could be prepared by the catalytic degradation of the lignin and cellulose , respectively. The obtained STW exhibited good light transmittance (45.8%), excellent mechanical performance (162.1 MPa) and thermal stability. In terms of the PG resin synthesis, a possible mechanism is proposed according to the characterization results.

Luminescent transparent wood from balsa wood loaded by graphite carbon nitride for application in photoelectric device

Yin Xuefeng,Zhang Yaqian,Xu Yongjian

In this study, metal-free wood-based encapsulating materials for white light-emitting diode were obtained by using renewable transparent wood as the biological support and the light scattering component, and graphite carbon nitride as the color light emitting component. The graphite phase carbon nitrides with blue and green color were prepared by thermal polymerization through structural regulation of raw materials. The resulting different color phosphors were mixed with epoxy resin, respectively, and then, blue epoxy resin, green epoxy resin and red epoxy resin were mixed with a mass ratio of 4:2:1 and a proper amount of curing agent. The delignified balsa wood with high porosity was vacuum impregnated with epoxy resin mixture to obtain white luminescent transparent wood with better performance such as high transmittance and high haze. This work provides a feasible solution for the sustainable development of transparent wood and the application of transparent wood to photoelectric materials.

Transparent wood developed by introducing epoxy vitrimers into a delignified wood template

Kaili Wang,Youming Dong,Zhe Ling,Xiaorong Liu,Sheldon Q. Shi,Jianzhang Li

Transparent wood (TW) has shown great potential in various functional applications, including light, thermal, electromagnetic, and energy management fields. Despite significant progress in functional TW, programmable shape-memory TW (PSMTW) has not yet been reported. Epoxy vitrimers with exchangeable dynamic covalent crosslinking networks exhibit excellent stimuli-responsive, shape-memory, reprocessing, and self-healing properties, which are suitable for fabricating smart TW. In this study, a TW with programmable shape-memory ability was developed by introducing transparent, refractive index-matching, and intelligent epoxy-based vitrimers into delignified wood. The transmittance and haze of the resultant TW with a thickness of 2 mm were approximately 60% and 95%, respectively. Vitrimers with dynamic covalent crosslinking networks perfectly combine the glass transition temperature ( Tg )-inducted phase change and topology freezing transition temperature ( Tv )-inducted rearrangement under thermal stimulus, which endow TW with excellent programmable shape-memory properties, such as shape-recovery, shape-programming, shape-erasing, and re-programming. The programmable shape-memory properties of TW have not been investigated thus far, and development of PSMTW would be a multi-functionalized and efficient application of TW-based materials.
