Hard carbon (HC) is the most promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), nevertheless, the understanding of sodium storage mechanism in HC is very limited. As an important aspect of storage mechanism, the steady state of sodium stored in HC has not been revealed clearly to date. Herein, the formation mechanism of quasi-metallic sodium and the quasi-ionic bond between sodium and carbon within the electrochemical reaction on the basis of theoretical calculations are disclosed. The presence of quasi-metallic sodium is further confirmed with the assistance of a specific reaction between the sodiated HC electrode and ethanol, by analyzing the reaction products with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and nuclear magnetic resonance. Moreover, based on the specific chemical reaction, the composition of fully sodiated HC is estimated to be NaC 6.7 , and the corresponding capacity of sucrose-derived HC is calculated to be 333.4 mAh g −1 in SIBs, matching well with the experimental result. This work helps to reveal the steady state of sodium and improve the understanding of sodium storage behavior in HC from the aspect of charge transfer. In addition, the proposed method is also expected to pave the way to investigate sodium storage mechanisms in other electrode systems.

In comparison to the well-known separator of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), there are unique characteristics and requirements for the separator of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) to affect the electrochemical performance and safety. In this work, a composite separator (AP@NSIO) is successfully fabricated by constructing a fully encapsulated sodium silicate (NSIO) ceramic sheath on the fiber surface of a low-cost, recyclable airlaid paper (AP) matrix using a facile solution immersion method. Due to the comprehensive coating of sodium silicate on the matrix fiber, the prepared AP@NSIO separator not only has excellent mechanical strength and remarkable wettability but also maintains thermal dimensional stability at 250 °C and is nonflammable in flames. Moreover, the AP@NSIO separator exhibits a high porosity of ∼50.6%, an electrolyte uptake of ∼298.9%, an ion conductivity of 2.02 mS cm–1, and a sodium-ion transfer number of 0.91. The Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP)|AP@NSIO|Na battery has an excellent capacity retention of 94.2% (96.8 mAh g–1) after 300 cycles at a high current density of 5C and maintains almost 100% Coulombic efficiency. These results indicate that the AP@NSIO separator is a potential candidate for application in safe and high-performance SIBs, and a strategy is provided for designing functional separators for SIBs.

Graphical In order to improve the stability and controlled release properties, NaClO 2 is microencapsulated based on emulsion crosslinking method adopting high biocompatibility sodium alginate (SA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) as shell material. The resulted sample is featured with selectivity and no secondary pollution, and brings about continuous degrading both liquid and gaseous formaldehyde. Sodium chlorite (NaClO 2 ) is a new type of air disinfectant, which can oxidize formaldehyde into carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) on account of releasing chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) gas under acidic condition. Unfortunately, NaClO 2 is prone to moisture absorption and decomposition when exposed to air. In this paper, NaClO 2 was microencapsulated based on emulsion crosslinking method for improving its stability and controlled release properties. Due to their high biocompatibility, sodium alginate (SA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) were selected as the wall material to prepare NaClO 2 -SA/CMC-Na composite microcapsules. The results showed that mean particle size of NaClO 2 -SA/CMC-Na composite microcapsules was about 225 nm, and their encapsulation ratio was up to 73.18%. In addition, the thermal stability and environmental tolerance of NaClO 2 are improved greatly through microencapsulating. It was proved by formaldehyde degradation testing that the efficiency of formaldehyde degradation using resulted samples can continue to increase after seven days in pH 6.5 environment, indicating their good controlled-release performance. Moreover, degradation efficiency on 30 µg/mL formaldehyde solution using the resulted microcapsules is up to 97.08%. Meanwhile, after 20 repetition degradation, NaClO 2 -SA/CMC-Na composite microcapsules can still continuously degrade formaldehyde gas. Therefore, NaClO 2 -SA/CMC-Na composite microcapsules reveal good stability and prolonged action on formaldehyde degradation.

A new type of composite fire-extinguishing powder was prepared with expandable graphite (EG) and sodium carbonate as the main materials. The morphology, structure, and thermal stability of the extinguishing powder were characterized. A fire-extinguishing experimental system was subsequently constructed to investigate the powder's fire-extinguishing performance for sodium fires. The results indicated that, compared with the unmodified EG, the modified EG had a 62.53% lower particle size and exhibited higher thermal stability. The fire control mechanism was also analyzed; the results revealed that sodium carbonate and EG exert a synergistic effect on flame suppression, and sodium carbonate improves fire-extinguishing efficiency.

Titanium dioxide is considered to be promising anode for sodium-ion batteries due to stable structure during the charge/discharge process. However, its practical application is hindered by the slow electron/ion transport. Herein, phosphorus-doped anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles with oxygen vacancies are successfully synthesized and utilized as high-performance sodium-storage materials. The dual strategy of phosphorus-doping and oxygen vacancies can concurrently boost electronic conductivity and adjust ion diffusion kinetics. They significantly contribute to the improved rate performance (167 mAh·g −1 at 20.0C) and stable cycling (95.9% after 2000 cycles at 20.0C). The proposed dual strategy can be potentially used to improve other oxide anodes for rechargeable batteries.

Among the various types of cathode materials for sodium ion batteries , NaFePO 4 attracts much attention owing to its high theoretical capacity (155 mA h g −1 ), low cost, high structural stability, and non-toxicity. Nevertheless, the NaFePO 4 with maricite structure, thermodynamically stable phase, has been considered as electrochemically inactive for sodium-ion storage. In this work, we succeeded in tuning the degree of disorder in NaFePO 4 cathode material by a mechanochemical route to enhance electrochemical performances of Na-ion batteries. The derived NaFePO 4 cathodes containing both amorphous and maricite phases exhibit much improved sodium storage performance with an initial capacity of 115 mA h g −1 at 1 C and an excellent cycling stability of capacity retention of 91.3% after 800 cycles. By X-ray absorption near edge and Raman spectroscopy , we revealed the atom-scale structural origin of the enhanced Na-storage performances of the amorphous NaFePO 4 electrode. The transformation of edge-sharing FeO 6 octahedra into various FeO n polyhedra upon amorphization was found to be a key to attain the superior performances for Na ion batteries.

The sodium (Na) anode suffers severe interfacial resistance and dendrite issues in a classic NASICON-type Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) electrolyte, resulting in poor electrochemical performance for solid-state Na metal batteries. There has been little success in the reduction of interfacial resistance in recent years. The exact mechanism of this resistance has not been fully understood because of little information about the interface. In this work, we effectively address the large interfacial resistance issue and the metal dendrite problem between the Na anode and NZSP by introducing a TiO2 film as an active interphase. We employ quasiinsitu X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to uncover the interphase formation mechanism at the Na/TiO2–NZSP electrolyte interface. Our quasiinsitu XPS results confirm the formation of a sodiated-TiO2 interphase upon stepwise Na evaporation on the surface of the NZSP electrolyte. Further investigation by molten Na contact angle measurements, impedance spectroscopy and DFT calculations demonstrates that the sodiated-TiO2 interphase promotes Na ion transport between the Na anode and NZSP electrolyte. Moreover, the electrostatic potential formed at the NZSP/NaxTiO2 interface can effectively reduce electronic conductivity at the interface and hence prevent the growth of sodium dendrites. A representative paradigm for interphase design is provided to address the interface contact for developing stable solid-state batteries with high performance.

Presently, the low ionic conductivity of Na super ionic conductor (NASICON) electrolytes is one of the main obstacles to the development of solid-state sodium batteries . Most researchers focus on the modified NASICON by doping with foreign elements and have not paid much attention to the effect of the composition changing by adjusting the ratio of elements in Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) on the ionic conductivity . In order to clarify the relationship between the ionic conductivity and the structure/composition of Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 , the ionic conductivity dependence on the Si/P ratio is systematically investigated in this study. The obtained results demonstrate that the ionic conductivity variation of NASICON is close to an order of magnitude i.e. the ionic conductivity of Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 is much more sensitive to the Si/P ratio in the structure. This means that it is crucial to control the composition during the preparation process to obtain the electrolyte with high ionic conductivity. The strong composition-dependent property of Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 can be attributed to the change of current carrier concentration, crystal structure, and sintering property resulting from the Si/P ratio. The results are insightful for further understanding the conducting characteristics of Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 material and its derivatives.

Sodium metal is considered a potential candidate for the anode in next-generation cost-effective and high-energy-density metal batteries. However, its practical application in ether-based electrolytes is severely hindered by the uncontrolled proliferation of sodium dendrites and the instability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. To address these challenges, we developed a lightweight, multifunctional separator using electrospinning technology. This separator, composed of a polymer-metal-organic framework composite (PAN/ZIF-67), offers a novel alternative to conventional bulky glass fiber separators. The PAN/ZIF-67 separator features a unique ordered structure and open active metal sites, which significantly enhance electrolyte wettability and promote anion adsorption, effectively guiding the uniform deposition of Na + . Experimental results confirmed its superior electrochemical performance, including low polarization voltage and high cycling stability, under standard ether-based electrolyte conditions without additives. In symmetric Na || Na cells equipped with the PAN/ZIF-67 separator, exceptional cycling stability was achieved, with a low polarization voltage of ∼12 mV at 1 mA cm −2 sustained over 1000 h and ∼66 mV at 5 mA cm −2 for over 500 h. In a full cell with a Na₃V₂(PO₄)₃ cathode and Na anode, the separator demonstrated excellent rate capability and cycling stability, maintaining a capacity retention of 72.4 % after 800 cycles at 5C. This work offers a possible solution to address critical issues in sodium metal batteries and represents a notable advancement toward their practical applications.

Antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) has been considered as a prospective material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its large theoretical capacity. Whereas, grievous volume expansion caused by the conversion-alloying reaction leads to fast capacity decay and inferior cycle stability. Herein, the confined Sb 2 Se 3 nanorods in nitrogen-doped carbon (Sb 2 Se 3 /NC) with interfacial chemical bond is designed to further enhance sodium storage properties of Sb 2 Se 3 . The robust enhancing effect of interfacial Sb O C bonds can significantly promote electron transfer, Na + ions diffusion kinetics and alloying reaction reversibility, combining the synergistic effect of the unique confinement structure of N -doped carbon shells can efficiently alleviate the volume change to ensure the structural integrity. Moreover, in-situ X-ray diffraction reveals intercalation/de-intercalation, conversion/reversed conversion reaction and alloying/de-alloying reaction mechanisms, and the kinetics analysis demonstrates the diffusion-controlled to contribute high capacity. As a result, Sb 2 Se 3 /NC anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 612.6 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g with a retentive specific capacity of 471.4 mAh/g after 1000 cycles, and long-cycle durability of over 2000 cycle with the reversible capacities of 371.1 and 297.3 mAh/g at 1 and 2 A/g are achieved, respectively, and an good rate capability. This distinctive interfacial chemical bonds and confinement effect design shows potential applications in the improved conversion/alloying-type materials for SIBs.

Tin disulfide (SnS 2 ) is a promising anode material for sodium ion storage. In this study, we present a SnS 2 /4S composite with a molar ratio of 1:4 between SnS 2 and S, which was prepared through a simple melt-diffusion method, showing excellent sodium ion storage performance. The elemental sulfur in the composite provides additional capacity with its high specific capacity (1675 mAh g −1 ) and facilitates the interfacial charge transfer between the electrode and the electrolyte because soluble polysulfide anions can be formed during charge and discharge. Thus, the specific capacity of SnS 2 /4S has been maintained at 540.2 mAh g −1 after 150 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g −1 . In addition, the initial discharge capacity of the full cell SnS 2 /4S||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 is 555.1 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 95.7 % during 50 cycles. Our work provides a new composite engineering approach for the sodium ion storage study of SnS 2 .

Graphical This study prepares phenolic resin-based carbon microspheres featuring small size (2–4 µm), monodispersity, and narrow particle size distribution by regulating the catalyst content. Subsequently, it explores the differences in sodium storage behavior. The optimal sample exhibits a plateau region capacity proportion of 75.6% and an initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 85.02%. Phenolic resin is considered a promising precursor for advanced hard carbon anodes in sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) due to its ease of design, structural stability, and high residual carbon yield. However, the practical application of hard carbon is affected by its closed-pore content and structure. Here, we achieve fine control over the cross-linking structure of phenolic resin precursors by adjusting the catalyst content in the system, followed by high-temperature carbonization to produce phenolic resin-based carbon microspheres with small sizes (2–4 µm), monodispersity, and a narrow spherical diameter distribution. Based on this, we deeply explore the intrinsic relationship between the microstructure of these resin-based carbon microspheres and their sodium storage performance in NIBs. This strategy can provide a feasible molecular cross-linking engineering approach for the development of closed pores in phenolic resin-based hard carbon to tune electrochemical properties such as the plateau region capacity.
