Uranium mining and the processing of nuclear materials generate significant quantities of low-level radioactive wastewater, which, if untreated, pose environmental and health risks. This study addresses the challenge of removing uranium from such wastewater by comparing the uranium ion removal performance and mechanisms of iron hydroxide colloids and powders. Iron hydroxide colloids were synthesized under alkaline conditions via an environmentally friendly oxidation process using ferrous sulfate and hydrogen peroxide. The colloids and powders were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size analysis, and zeta potential measurements. The results showed that the colloid’s average particle size (17.61 nm) was significantly smaller than that of the powder (164.18 nm), resulting in a higher specific surface area, more uniform particle distribution, and increased adsorption site density. Zeta potential analysis indicated that the colloid reduced the solution potential from -22.13 mV to -15.46 mV, promoting uranium flocculation through double-layer compression, whereas the powder maintained a potential of -23.43 mV, preventing effective flocculation. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize process parameters, identifying the optimal conditions as a pH of 8.82, a dosing concentration of 424.80 mg/L, and a settling time of 2.2 h. Under these conditions, the uranium removal rate achieved 98.38%, closely aligning with the predicted rate of 98.81%. This method outperforms conventional ferric salt flocculation by avoiding the introduction of additional impurity ions, with the only by-products being oxygen and water. Moreover, this study demonstrates for the first time how the adjustment of iron hydroxide colloids can enhance uranium removal efficiency, offering a promising and eco-friendly approach to treating radioactive wastewater.

Recovering uranium (VI) from wastewater is crucial for the sustainable development of nuclear energy industry and ecological environment health. Polyamidoxime (PAO) based 3D hydrophilic adsorbents are regarded as ideal materials for their high selectivity and adsorption capabilities. However, constructing efficient 3D hydrophilic adsorbents from inorganic and PAO composites remains a challenge. This study exploited high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) as template to fabricate hydroxyapatite (HAP)-PAO hydrophilic xerogels for U(VI) extraction. The oil-in-water HIPEs were constructed using sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) modified HAP particles as stabilizers and acrylamide (AAm) with dissolved PAO as continuous phase. After the polymerization of AAm, macroporous xerogels were prepared by removing the water and oil phases. Xerogels exhibited the removal efficiency of 99.9 % for U(VI) within 3 h with a maximum adsorption capacity of 223 mg∙g −1 . The outstanding removal performance was ascribed to the specific structure of HAP and PAO which can effectively integrate with U(VI) ions in the presence of a hydrophilic network. This work provided a new approach to fabricate the complex adsorbents of inorganic particles with PAO for the rapid clean-up of U(VI) in wastewater.

The efficient fix of environmental uranium contaminations from radioactive effluents is of great practical significance. However, the weaknesses of currently available uranium adsorbents, including slow adsorption speed, low adsorption capacity, and lack of environmental tolerance, limit their practical application. Herein, an interlayer spacing adjusted 2D adsorbent, named as ZrP@1,8-Diaminoctane, is fabricated. With an ultra-low dosage of 0.06 g/L, ZrP@1,8-Diaminoctane exhibits a high and fast uranium removal performance of 97.1% within two minutes. Attributing to the fully exposure of the interlayer functional sites, ZrP@1,8-Diaminoctane achieves a high uranium adsorption capacity of 351.41 mg/g, which is increased by 13.12 times compared with that of the original α-ZrP. Furthermore, the binding of uranium by ZrP@1,8-Diaminoctane happens by tightly chemical adsorption and no observable release of uranium is detected after soaking the uranium-loaded ZrP@1,8-Diaminoctane in seawater and simulated groundwater for 30 days. The analysis of the binding mechanism by EXAFS reveals that uranium is bound by coordinating with six oxygen atoms from the phosphate groups , which empower the adsorbent with high binding affinity. Attributing to all above advantages, ZrP@1,8-Diaminoctane would be a promising adsorbent for fixing of uranium contaminations in the environment.

The development of adsorption materials which can efficiently isolate and enrich uranium is of great scientific significance to sustainable development and environmental protection. In this work, a novel phosphonic acid-functionalized magnetic microsphere adsorbent Fe3O4/P (GMA-MBA)-PO4was developed by functionalized Fe3O4/P (GMA-MBA) prepared by distill-precipitation polymerization with O-phosphoethanolamine. The adsorption process was endothermic, spontaneous and kinetically followed the pseudo second-order model. The maximum uranium adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model was 333.33 mg g−1at 298 K. In addition, the adsorbent also had good acid resistance and superparamagnetic properties, which could be quickly separated by a magnetic field. XPS analysis showed that the adsorption of adsorbent mainly depended on the complexation of phosphonic acid group with uranium. This work offers a promising candidate for the application of magnetic adsorbents in the field of uranium separation and enrichment. Keywords:uranium elimination;magnetic polymer microsphere;phosphonic acid;radioactive water treatment

With the rapid development of nuclear energy, the contamination of environmental water systems by uranium has become a significant threat to human health. To efficiently remove uranium from these systems, three types of silica-based polyamine resins—SiPMA-DETA (SiPMA: silica/poly methyl acrylate; DETA: diethylenetriamine), SiPMA-TETA (TETA: triethylenetetramine), and SiPMA-TEPA (TEPA: tetraethylenepentamine)—were successfully prepared, characterized, and evaluated in batch experiments. Characterization results showed that the silica-based polyamine resins were successfully prepared, and they exhibited a uniform shape and high specific surface area. SiPMA-DETA, SiPMA-TETA, and SiPMA-TEPA had nitrogen contents of 4.08%, 3.72%, and 4.26%, respectively. Batch experiments indicated that these adsorbents could efficiently remove uranium from aqueous solutions with a pH of 5–9. The adsorption kinetics of U(VI) were consistent with the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that the adsorption process was chemisorption and that adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 10 min. SiPMA-TEPA, with the longest polyamine chain, exhibited the highest adsorption capacity (>198.95 mg/g), while SiPMA-DETA, with the shortest polyamine chain, demonstrated the highest U(VI) adsorption efficiency (83%) with 100 mM Na2SO4. SiPMA-TEPA still removed over 90% of U(VI) from river water and tap water. The spectral analysis revealed that the N-containing functional groups on the ligand were bound to anionic uranium–carbonate species and possibly contributed to the adsorption efficiency. In general, this work presents three effective adsorbents for removing uranium from environmental water systems and thus significantly contributes to the field of environmental protection.

Piezoelectric catalysis is an emerging green strategy, but the existing piezoelectric heterostructures are not sufficient in performance for catalytic reduction of low-reduction potential uranium under harsh conditions. This study innovatively employs a defect heterogeneous engineering strategy, wherein covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are grown in situ on the surface of zinc oxide (ZnO) via Schiff base reactions, and defects are introduced into the COF shell layer via imine exchange reactions to construct D-COF@ZnO for piezoelectric catalytic uranium removal. The comprehensive study shows that defect heterogeneous engineering increases the asymmetry induced polarization of the material to promote charge redistribution, and thus significantly improves the activity of piezoelectric catalysis. In addition, defect engineering optimizes the nanosize of D-COF@ZnO to expose a richer array of active sites, resulting in ultra-fast U(VI) removal kinetics and ultra-high removal capacity. In the actual nuclear wastewater settings, D-COF@ZnO demonstrates outstanding selective removal efficacy for uranium, manifesting its considerable application potential and efficiency superiority. This strategy holds profound implications for facilitating the application of piezoelectric catalytic technology in environmental protection domains such as uranium removal, manifesting its considerable potential and value.

The zero-valent iron (ZVI) has attracted increasing attention due to the enhanced reactivity of ZVI to uranium wastewater. However, ZVI practical application is hampered due to its susceptibility to oxidation and the formation of passivation layers during storage and in situ restoration. To address these issues, we used a biosulfuration approach to modify ZVI for application in uranium ore wastewater treatment. A series of physicochemical characterization tools and photoelectronic analyses showed that BS-ZVI considerably increased carrier separation efficiency and visible light absorption capacity, resulting in a significant photoassisted enhancement effect on uranium extraction. Accordingly, the uranium removal efficiency of BS-ZVI reached 91% within 60 min, and its maximum adsorption capacity was 336.3 mg/g. By analyzing the mechanism, the improved U(VI) removal performance was mostly responsible on the dissolution of the passivation layer on the surface of ZVI, the generation of Fe(II) and FeS, and the important role of Shewanella putrefaciens extracellular polymers (EPS). Overall, the BS-ZVI biohybrid merges with the high activity of ZVI, bio-FeS, and self-regeneration ability of bacteria, expanding a promising new approach for sustainable treatment of uranium mine wastewater.

In this study, a novel nanocomposite of iron sulfide supported on two-dimensional titanium carbide (FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x ) was constructed and applied in U(VI) removal from wastewater under anoxic conditions. The results demonstrated that FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x had excellent removal ability, and the highest scavenging capacity reached 1098.2 mg/g at T = 303 K, which was better than that on Ti 3 C 2 T x or FeS material under the same experimental conditions. Various factors, such as contact time, initial pH, adsorbent dose and initial U(VI) concentration, were comprehensively investigated by batch experiments. U(VI) removal on FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x was strongly dependent on the initial pH, and its optimum value was at pH = 5.0. The reaction process of U(VI) removal on FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x reached equilibrium within 3 h. The kinetics and isotherm analyses under different conditions demonstrated that U(VI) removal on FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x was in accordance with pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models. These results suggested that the FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposites could be an efficient scavenger for environmental remediation.

A modified electrokinetic system using activated carbon particles was proposed to quickly remove uranium (U). The influences of electrokinetic parameters such as voltage, length of particle electrode, particle electrode ration were studied through batch experiments. The results revealed that the three dimensional electrokinetic (3D-EK) treatment system showed a great potential for uranium removal. The uranium removal efficiency reached above 99% and the residual solution reached the discharge standard when pH = 2, voltage = 25 V,150 g/L of 4 mm particle electrode. The colloidal precipitates generated were detected as Fe(OH) 3 . Tthe probable removal mechanism is ascribed to the synergy of electromigration, electrocoagulation and adsorption.

The nuclear industry's production generates significant uranium-containing wastewater. Owing to radioactivity, this wastewater seriously threatens environmental safety and human health, becoming a major bottleneck for nuclear energy's sustainable development. Adsorption-based uranium extraction from radioactive wastewater represents a promising strategy, as it facilitates the recovery of a valuable resource while significantly mitigating environmental pollution. Chitosan contains active functional groups like amino groups and hydroxyl groups, this study employed chitosan cross-linking and composite technology, supplemented by freeze-drying methods. Based on the synergy of multi-functional groups, a composite foam adsorbent (HPC) was constructed, which consists of phytic acid-modified layered hydrotalcite rich in phosphate groups and chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose. This adsorbent was employed for the removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions, and its adsorption performance was systematically evaluated under various conditions. The results demonstrated that under optimal conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity for U(VI) reached 272.28 mg/g. The adsorption process was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm, indicating monolayer chemisorption. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption is spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The HPC adsorbent possesses a high specific surface area and is rich in diverse functional groups, including carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino, and phosphate groups. The synergistic effect among these functional groups enhances U(VI) adsorption through mechanisms such as chemical complexation, ion exchange, and isomorphic substitution. These findings suggest that HPC is a promising high-performance adsorbent for the treatment of uranium-containing radioactive wastewater.

Herein, a sulfonated covalent organic framework (COF-SO3H) is prepared in situ on melamine sponge (MS) to produce MS@COF-SO3H as integral materials by a one-pot synthesis in water at room temperature, for facile deep removal of trace uranium-containing wastewater. The −SO3H on the COFs is able to form complexation with UO22+ through strong coordination interactions, and MS@COF-SO3H is therefore highly selective for UO22+ (Kd = 52603 mL g–1). The adsorption efficiency of MS@COF-SO3H-3 can reach 97.9% and 87.5% when the initial UO22+ concentration is 100 and 5 μg L–1, respectively, and the minimum residual UO22+ concentration is as low as 0.478 μg L–1, far lower than that in previous reports. In addition, MS@COF-SO3H exhibits excellent durability as an adsorbent, and its adsorption efficiency for UO22+ is still as high as 92.4% even after 5 cycles of recycling. The mild preparation conditions and excellent performance of MS@COF-SO3H make it quite promising as a highly efficient adsorbent for uranium removal. This work provides an important clue to prepare adsorbents facilely for nuclear wastewater deep treatment.

Efficient removal of uranium from radioactive wastewater is paramount for the sustainable development of nuclear energy. However, the exploitation of superior adsorbents with practical applications remains a challenge. In this work, we engineered and synthesized an adsorbent (TPEAC) enriched with phosphine-oxime, featuring a matrix composed of hydrophilic modified amidoxime functional groups. TPEAC exhibited exceptional selectivity (Multiple ion coexistence R% > 99 %) and efficiency in uranium adsorption, with a higher adsorption rate (reach equilibrium around 400 mins) and capacity (243.9 mg/g) than raw-amidoxime (133.3 mg/g) and modified-amidoxime (175.4 mg/g) materials. Moreover, it maintained robust stability and reusability even after six adsorption–desorption cycles, with removal ratio still above 95 %. In-depth mechanistic investigations through DFT and XPS elucidated that P-O (P=O) groups exhibited a stronger affinity for U(VI) compared to other functional groups, and the adsorption of TPEAC towards U(VI) primarily due to the synergistic interaction among P-O (P=O) groups, C(NH 2 ) = N-OH, and carboxyl groups, which significantly facilitated the effective removal of U(VI). Most prominently, TPEAC performed considerable potential in processing actual uranium mine wastewater, with its dynamic column device achieving a U(VI) recovery up to 99.6 %. This work not only furnishes an efficacious and economical solution for uranium wastewater treatment but also provides new approaches for scalable application uranium materials.
