Synergistic effect between pyrite and Fe-based metallic glass for the removal of azo dyes in wastewater

Jing Wei,Zhigang Zheng,Lin Zhao,Zhaoguo Qiu,Dechang Zeng

Fe-based metallic glasses (Fe MGs ) are popular reductants for the restoration of wastewater containing various pollutants, but it still suffers from surface passivation and a narrow applicable pH range. In this work, pyrite, an abundant iron sulfide , was used to enhance the reactivity of Fe MGs for the removal of azo dye . Synergetic effects between pyrite and Fe MGs improved the removal of Orange II when using an Fe MGs /pyrite mixture, where the reaction rate constant k obs was 0.218 min −1 , which was higher than when using Fe MGs alone (0.114 min −1 ). Orange II was removed at pH 0 ranging from 5.0 to 10.0 in the presence of pyrite, while it was inefficiently removed by Fe MGs alone (10 g/L) at pH 0 10.0. Mechanistic investigations showed that the synergistic effect between Fe MGs and pyrite enhanced the surface corrosion of Fe MGs and accelerated the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle to generate more sorbed Fe 2+ , which was the dominant reactive species during Orange II removal. This study proposes an approach for enhancing the removal of dye wastewater by using Fe MGs to treat mine waste.

Nitrate concentration mediates iron transformation by an iron-oxidizing-reducing bacterium in the Fe(II)-Fe(III) co-existing system

Rong Peng,Qi Zhu,Shuang Li,Hui Liu

The bacterium Comamonas terrigena strain HJ-2 has been reported as a nitrate-dependent iron-oxidizing bacterium, surprisingly with Fe(III) reduction ability. The control of iron redox cycling by the strain HJ-2 in the Fe(II)-Fe(III) co-existing system is mysterious and worthy of exploration. The present study demonstrates that HJ-2 utilizes nitrate as an electron acceptor to rapidly oxidize Fe(II), with negligible Fe(III) reduction, under neutral anaerobic conditions in a co-existing Fe2+ and ferrihydrite system. Nitrate significantly influences the iron transformation mediated by HJ-2. The final conversion ratio of Fe(II) increased from 27.94% to 96.67%, and the bio-oxidation rate of Fe(II) escalated from 0.000143 to 0.013 h⁻¹ as nitrate concentrations rose from 0.1 to 10 mM. X-ray diffraction results indicated that in the absence of HJ-2, goethite was the sole product, regardless of the nitrate concentration. While in the presence of HJ-2, the minerals formed transitioned from crystalline goethite and lepidocrocite to amorphous or weakly crystalline minerals with increasing nitrate concentration. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the morphology of the final mineral formed under high nitrate conditions resembled ferrihydrite, with higher carbon content on the mineral surface at elevated nitrate concentrations, suggesting enhanced production of bio-iron oxides and increased adsorption capacity for aqueous Fe(II). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirmed higher Fe(II) content on the amorphous minerals surface than goethite. This work provides new insights into microbial-mediated Fe-N cycling in natural environments, highlighting the significance of nitrate in driving iron redox processes and the iron mineral transformation by strain HJ-2.

Comparison of enhancement of anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge through adding nano-zero valent iron and zero valent iron

Yayi Wang,Duanli Wang,Huiying Fang

The feasibility of adding nano-zero valent iron (NZVI: 0.6, 1.0, 4.0, 10.0 g L−1) to enhance anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) was examined by comparison with ZVI, and the mechanisms of NZVI enhancement of the hydrolysis and methanogenesis processes were elucidated. NZVI could enhance hydrolysis–acidification of WAS by destroying the integrity of microbial cells. Both volatile fatty acids production and the acetic acid portion were greatly improved by NZVI additions, peaking at 4.0 g L−1 NZVI. In anaerobic digestion, CH4 production was promoted at a NZVI dosage ≤1.0 g L−1. The optimum dosage of NZVI for methanogenesis was 1.0 g L−1, and further addition of NZVI could cause inhibition of methanogenesis because of long-term accumulation of H2. ZVI could also improve hydrolysis–acidification and the CH4 yield, but its efficiency was relatively low compared with NZVI, and it could not induce cell wall rupture. 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing results showed that NZVI addition at appropriate dosage facilitated increasing the proportion of microorganisms involved in WAS hydrolysis–acidification and methanogenesis.

Ferrous oxalate covered ZVI through ball-milling for enhanced catalytic oxidation of organic contaminants with persulfate

Shuxuan Wu,Sheng Deng,Zhifei Ma,Yuhui Liu,Yu Yang,Yonghai Jiang

Zero-valent iron (ZVI), with high reduction capacity and cost effectiveness, has been widely used as an activator for persulfate in remediation of organic pollutants. However, the existence of inherent iron oxide shell blocked the transfer of proton and further reduced its reactivity. In present study, a novel persulfate (PS) activator BZVI@OA was synthesized via ball milling ZVI with oxalic acid dihydrate. Scanning electron microscope , X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy confirmed the original low proton conductive oxidation shell was replaced by a high proton conductive FeC 2 O 4 shell. The generated shell significantly improved persulfate activated capacity, through which degradation rates of various contaminants were enhanced for 1.64 to 2.33 times. Dissolved oxalate was proved to form complexes with iron ions, dramatically reduced the potential difference and relieved the blocked cyclic conversion. Electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching experiments confirmed an inner sphere adsorption of PS on FeC 2 O 4 ·2H 2 O shell which facilitated the peroxide bonds cleavage, leading high efficiency of ROS generation. The accelerated proton transition was confirmed with AC impedance method, resulting in fast and elevated surface bound Fe 2+ for persulfate decomposition into active species. Furthermore, BZVI@OA/PS system demonstrated high tolerance over wide initial pH range and promising reusability within 6 cycles. This work clarifies an effective strategy for developing efficient modified ZVI as a PS activator for organic pollutant degradation in water.

Resolve the species-specific effects of iron (hydr)oxides on the performance of underlying zerovalent iron for metalloid removal: Identification of their key properties

Peng Fan,Xuechen Wu,Jianrong Zeng,Lina Li,Kun Qian,Hejie Qin,Xiaohong Guan

Despite the importance of surface iron (hydr)oxides (Fe-(hydr)oxides) for the decontamination performance of zerovalent iron (ZVI) -based technologies has been well recognized, controversial understandings of their exact roles still exist due to the complex species distribution of Fe-(hydr)oxides. Herein, we re-structured the surface of ZVI using eight distinct Fe-(hydr)oxides and analyzed their species-specific effects on the performance of ZVI for Se(IV) under well-controlled conditions. The kinetics-relevant performance indicators (Se(IV) removal rates, Fe 2+ release rates, and the utilization ratio of ZVI) under the effect of each Fe-(hydr)oxide roughly followed the order: δ-FeOOH > Fe 5 HO 8 ·4H 2 O > α-FeOOH > β-FeOOH > γ-FeOOH > γ-Fe 2 O 3 > Fe 3 O 4 > α-Fe 2 O 3 . Multiple linear regression analysis shows that the large pore volume and size (instead of specific surface area), low open-circuit potential, and low electrochemical impedance are key positive properties for kinetics-relevant performance. Besides, for electron efficiency of ZVI, only Fe 3 O 4 increased the value to 50.0%, due to the contribution of its ferrous components, while others did not change it (∼20%). Additional experiments with commercial ZVI covered by individual Fe-(hydr)oxides confirmed the observed species-specific trends. All these results not only provide new basis for mechanism explanation but also have practical implications for the production or modification of ZVI.

Simultaneous removal of methylene blue and total dissolved copper in zero-valent iron/H2O2 Fenton system: Kinetics, mechanism and degradation pathway

Bo Yang,Peng Zhou,Xin Cheng,Haishen Li,Xiaowei Huo,Yongli Zhang

This study aimed to investigate the simultaneous removal of methylene blue (MB) and total dissolved copper (TCu) by heterogeneous zero-valent iron (ZVI) Fenton-like system (ZVI/H 2 O 2 ) and elucidate the mechanism of synergistic effect for co-contaminants removal. Hydroxyl radical ( OH) formation was hypothesized to be the dominant pathway for the oxidation of MB, confirmed by the quenching experiments and ESR analysis. And the synergistic effect of TCu and ZVI greatly promoted the release of Fe 2+ , further accelerating the generation of hydroxyl radical ( OH) via Fenton reaction. The generation process of OH was unveiled by quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, while the processes of ZVI corrosion and TCu reduction were revealed through several characterization approaches including SEM , XRD , FTIR and XPS . The degradation pathway of MB was also investigated by LC-MS analysis. The MB initial concentration, TCu initial concentration, H 2 O 2 dosage, ZVI dosage and initial solution pH could play crucial roles in the removal of MB and TCu. The influence of water matrix including inorganic anions (Cl − , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − ) and actual water was finally conducted to elucidate the role of natural organic matter (NOM) in the environmental systems.

New insights into the role of zero-valent iron surface oxidation layers in persulfate oxidation of dibutyl phthalate solutions

Huanxuan Li,Jinquan Wan,Yongwen Ma,Mingzhi Huang,Yan Wang,Yangmei Chen

Batch tests were conducted to investigate the effect of initial pH on the degradation of dibutyl phthalate (DBP), the formation and evolution of iron corrosion products, and the role of iron oxides on the further degradation of DBP in zero-valent iron (ZVI)–persulfate system. The study indicated that the half-lives for the oxidation of DBP by persulfate activated with ZVI were 30–176   min at pH 3.0–11.0. The constituents and the morphology of the iron corrosion coating along different initial pH and over reaction time were investigated with Raman spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy. The results illustrated that magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ), wustite (FeO), hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) and goethite (α-FeOOH) were identified as the corrosion products. In alkaline and neutral solutions, the inner layer of iron oxides was mainly composed of α-Fe 2 O 3 with some α-FeOOH while the outer layer mostly consisted of Fe 3 O 4 and α-FeOOH. Oppositely, the iron oxides formation in acidic solution mainly consisted of Fe 3 O 4 , α-FeOOH and a small amount of α-Fe 2 O 3 and FeO in the inner layer, the outer layer was mostly composed of α-Fe 2 O 3 and some α-FeOOH. These iron corrosion coatings exhibited an inhibitory effect on the degradation of DBP, which may be due to that the iron oxides hindered the electron transfer from ZVI core to the solid–liquid interface.

Hybrid-ion strategy enables ultra-long life aqueous iron-organic batteries

Chang Li,Yushuang Xu,Wenjun Deng,Na Shen,Yan Chen,Chao Huang,Jinlin Zhu,Runduo Zhu,Wenxia Zou,Rui Li

Among aqueous batteries , the research on the battery employing metal as the anode is still mainly focused on the aqueous zinc-ion battery. Compared with zinc, iron has better stability for reversible deposition, lower cost, and higher specific capacity, which is suitable for aqueous batteries. In this study, an aqueous iron-organic battery is constructed by employing polyaniline as the cathode, Fe plate as the anode, and Fe(CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 as the electrolyte, which demonstrates the hybrid storage mechanism of iron plating/stripping in the anode and transmission of CF 3 SO 3 − in the cathode. The polyaniline-Fe battery delivers a specific capacity of 105.8 mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.05 A g −1 and a stable cycle performance over 5,000 cycles with almost no capacity fading at a current density of 0.2 A g −1 , which provides a new direction for the development of aqueous iron-ion batteries.

Iron-Free Anode Boosting High Energy Efficiency Aqueous Full Iron-Ion Batteries

Chang Li,Xinyu Guo,Wenjun Deng,Na Shen,Yi Zhou,Yan Chen,Rui Li

Aqueous iron-ion batteries with reversible storage of Fe 2+ have undergone rapid development in recent years. Consistently throughout these studies, metallic iron is selected as the anode material. However, the large overpotential (250 mV) associated with the plating/stripping process of iron in aqueous solutions leads to unsatisfactory energy efficiency of the battery, although high capacity and Coulomb efficiency can be achieved. Herein, an iron-free anode material, 9,10-anthraquinone (AQ) is proposed in aqueous iron-ion batteries, which shows a low reaction potential and minimal polarization during storing iron ions. The organic anode exhibits favorable specific capacity of 106 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and excellent cycling stability (92.6% retention after 500 cycles). In addition, an aqueous full iron-ion battery is constructed using AQ as the anode and 9,10-phenanthraquinone (PQ) as the cathode. The full battery demonstrates an enhanced energy efficiency of 72%, which is 206% higher than that of metal iron anode, and shows excellent cycling stability and Coulombic efficiency. This work provides a viable route to overcome the high polarization of metallic iron anode and promote the development of aqueous iron-ion batteries.

Multiferroic and magnetoelectronic polarizations in BaFe12O19 system

Xue Li,Guo-Long Tan

Coexistence of ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism in one single phase of a solid is of great interest because of the potential application for novel electronic devices. We report on the enhanced ferroelectricity jointly co-existing with excellent magnetic performance in M-type barium hexaferrite (BaFe 12 O 19 ), which demonstrating a classic electric polarization (P-E) hysteresis loop with full saturation. Two nonlinear current peaks in the I–V curve for polarization switch and giant abnormal change of dielectric constant near Curie temperatures provide sufficient experimental evidences to verify the ferroelectricity of BaFe 12 O 19 ceramics. It holds a large remnant polarization of 55.7 μC/cm 2 and a suitable coercive field at 441 kV/cm. Two peaks at 194 °C and 451 °C in the temperature-dependent dielectric spectrum of BaFe 12 O 19 ceramics are considered to be the phase transition from ferro-to antiferro- and antiferro-to para-electric structures. A conventional strong magnetic hysteresis loop was also observed. The influence of oxygen vacancies on the band structure, electric and magnetic properties has been discussed in detail. The magnetically induced E-polarization upon the BaFe 12 O 19 ceramics was achieved in the form of alternating spin current waves. These combined multiple functional responses of large ferroelectrics and strong ferromagnetism reveal the excellent multiferroic features of BaFe 12 O 19 , which would bring forth the great opportunity to create novel electric devices with active coupling effect between magnetic and electric orders.

Efficient eradication of organotin utilizing K2FeO4 augmented by nZVI: revelations on influential factors, kinetic dynamics, and mechanistic insights

Huang Yuanyuan,Yang Qingwei,Song Ling,Ran Hongjie,Jiang Hui,Sun Da

In this study, we investigated the oxidative mechanisms of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) enhanced potassium ferrate (K2FeO4), focusing on tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) as target pollutants. The addition of nZVI enhanced the degradation of both organic tin compounds by K2FeO4, exhibiting pseudo-first-order kinetics influenced by pH, carbonate, and fulvic acid. nZVI, as a reducing agent, facilitated the generation of stronger oxidizing species Fe (V) and Fe (IV) from K2FeO4 through electron transfer. The presence of hydroxyl radicals (OH) was confirmed by tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) verification. Intermediate products of TBT degradation by nZVI-enhanced K2FeO4 were identified using GC-MS, confirming de-alkylation leading to stepwise oxidation to inorganic tin ions. Due to excessively long Sn-C bonds in diphenyltin, rendering them unstable, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed. Results indicated that Fe (IV) and Fe (V) predominantly attacked the Sn-C bonds of TPhT, while OH primarily targeted the benzene ring. HOMO energy levels suggested that Fe (V) was more prone to oxidizing TPhT than Fe (IV). Gibbs free energy calculations demonstrated that, in the presence of Fe (IV) and Fe (V), the energy barrier for breaking bonds and oxidizing into inorganic tin ions decreased, favoring the process over the self-decomposition of TPhT. Additionally, the lower energy barrier for OH indicated an easier degradation of TPhT. This study reveals that nZVI-enhanced K2FeO4 effectively removes TBT and TPhT, contributing to the understanding of the ferrate-mediated degradation mechanism of organic tin compounds. The findings offer insights and theoretical guidance for remediating organic tin pollution in aquatic environments.

Enhanced two-phase anaerobic digestion of waste-activated sludge by combining magnetite and zero-valent iron

Guangyi Zhang,Yinghao Shi,Zisheng Zhao,Xiaowei Wang,Ming Dou

Previous studies have found that magnetite can promote the hydrolysis-acidification but inhibit the methanogenesis, while zero-valent iron (ZVI) only promoted the methanogenesis. Therefore, a new two-phase anaerobic digestion model, in which magnetite was added to the first phase, and ZVI was added to the second phase, was proposed to promote both hydrolysis-acidification and methanogenesis and avoid magnetite inhibition. The results showed that in the new model, methane production was improved by 10.2% and 18.1% and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was improved by 7.9% and 10.9% compared with reactors that included only magnetite and only ZVI, respectively. In the new model reactors, inhibition of methanogenesis by magnetite was avoided compared with that of the magnetite-only reactors, and hydrolysis efficiency was improved via dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) compared with that of ZVI-only reactors. The data on volatile fatty acids (VFAs), coenzyme F 420 and electron transfer system (ETS) further confirmed these conclusions.
