Inspired by the emergent functions of molecular interactions and signal processing networks in living systems, exploring the multifunctional properties and perceptual capabilities of molecular or nanosystems and digitizing their signal responses and interaction networks remains a key challenge. Here, multifunctional antimonene-gold nanocomposites (AM-Au NCs) were synthesized efficiently and conveniently and applied in molecular sensing and digital applications, including multi-component detection and multi-coding information protection. After mixing surfactant, AM, Au 3 ⁺ and NaBH₄, AM-Au NCs with dispersed Au nanoparticles on AM nanosheets, exhibiting prominent Au plasmonic absorption. This endows NCs with unique broad-spectrum fluorescence quenching abilities, facilitating the development of fluorescence sensing platforms with dyes and fluorescence-labeled aptamers for selective and sensitive detection of metal ions and tumor biomarkers (CD63 and tumor-derived exosomes), even in real samples. Through binary or digital encoding of the selective responses and diverse DNA sequences of these sensing systems, a series of molecular encryption and hiding techniques are presented and applied to the molecular-level conservation of special text information. This work provides a new framework for the preparation and multifunctional use of two-dimensional nanocomposites, paving the way for greater integration of molecular sensing and information technology.

Most anticancer drugs with broad toxicities are systematically administrated to cancer patients and their distribution in tumors is extremely low owing to hypoxia, which compromises the therapeutic efficacies of these cancer drugs. Consequently, a preponderant proportion of cancer drugs is distributed in off-target-healthy tissues, which often causes severe adverse effects. Precision cancer therapy without overdosing patients with drugs remains one of the most challenging issues in cancer therapy. Here, a novel concept of nanopoxia is presented, which is a tumor-hypoxia-based photodynamic nanoplatform for the release of therapeutic agents to achieve precision cancer therapy. Under tumor hypoxia, exposure of tumors to laser irradiation induces the fracture of polymer outer shell and produces anticancer reactive oxygen species, and switches 2D antimonene (Sb) nanomaterials to cytotoxic trivalent antimony to synergistically kill tumors. In preclinical cancer models, delivery of Sb nanomaterials to mice virtually ablates tumor growth without producing any detectable adverse effects. Mechanistically, the tumor hypoxia-triggered generation of trivalent antimony displays direct damaging effects on cancer cells and suppression of tumor angiogenesis. Together, the study provides a proof-of-concept of hypoxia-based precision cancer therapy by developing a novel nanoplatform that offers multifarious mechanisms of cancer eradication.

High-performance organic photovoltaics (OPVs) are of great scientific and technological importance due to their potential large-scale industrial applications. Introducing semiconductor quantum dots has been proven to be an effective way to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OPVs. In this paper, we report a novel approach to fabricate atomically thin antimonene quantum sheets (AMQSs) possessing a uniform size (≈2.2 nm) via imidazolium ionic liquid-assisted exfoliation. In this method, the yield of AMQSs (1.1 mg mL−1) has been increased by nearly two orders of magnitude compared with that of previously reported methods. Furthermore, upon adding AMQSs into the light absorber in OPVs, the optimal device with 1.0 mg mL−1 AMQSs shows the highest PCE of 9.75%, resulting in over 25% enhancement in PCE compared to that of the reference device. It also leads to a noticeable enhancement in the short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 16.7% and the fill factor (FF) of 8.4%. The increased PCE is mainly due to the two-dimensional electronic structure of AMQSs that can enhance the light absorption, assist exciton dissociation and reduce charge recombination of OPVs. This work provides a new avenue toward mass production of two-dimensional quantum sheets and points to a new strategy for highly efficient OPVs.

The overexpression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) in tumor cells can activate inherent defense mechanisms during hyperthermia-based treatments, inducing thermoresistance and thus diminishing the treatment efficacy. Here, we report a distinct “non-inhibitor involvement” strategy to address this issue through engineering a calcium-based nanocatalyst (G/ [email protected] 3 -PEG). The constructed nanocatalyst consists of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 )-supported glucose oxidase (GOD) and 2D antimonene quantum dots (AQDs), with further surface modification by lipid bilayers and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The engineered G/ [email protected] 3 -PEG nanocatalyst features prolonged blood circulation, which is stable at neutral pH but rapidly degrades under mildly acidic tumor microenvironment, resulting in rapid release of drug cargo in the tumor microenvironment. The integrated GOD effectively catalyzes the depletion of glucose for reducing the supplies of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and subsequent down-regulation of HSP expression. This effect then augments the therapeutic efficacy of photothermal hyperthermia induced by 2D AQDs upon irradiation with near-infrared light as assisted by reversing the cancer cells’ thermoresistance. Consequently, synergistic antineoplastic effects can be achieved via low-temperature photothermal therapy. Systematic in vitro and in vivo evaluations have demonstrated that G/ [email protected] 3 -PEG nanocatalysts feature potent antitumor activity with a high tumor-inhibition rate (83.92%). This work thus paves an effective way for augmenting the hyperthermia-based tumor treatments via restriction of the ATP supply.

Surface functionalization is considered to be an effective and versatile strategy to tailor intrinsic electronic and optoelectronic properties of 2D materials. In this work, surface-decorated few-layer antimonene is synthesized by a one-step electrochemical exfoliation and synchronous halogenation method in halogen-containing an ionic liquid–based electrolyte at room temperature. The prepared halogenated antimonene nanosheets are composed of oxygen- and halogen-decorated amorphous and crystalline domains. The structural reconstructions and evolutions of halogenated antimonene are further revealed by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and first-principles calculations. The band structures and optical properties of antimonene can be tailored after amorphization and surface functionalization, depending on the reactivity of different halogens. The photoresponse performance of the halogenated antimonene is further evaluated by photoelectrochemical measurement. Exhibiting self-powered photoresponse behavior, their photocurrent density increases with the increases of external bias potential and light intensity. This work proposes a new idea of tuning the optoelectronic properties of 2D materials by synchronous halogenation in the facile one-step electrochemical synthesis process. Benefiting from this facile synthesis procedure, the halogenation of antimonene may shed light on chemical functionalization of other 2D materials for electronic and optoelectronic applications.
