Exploration of TKX-50-M (M=Pb, Bi and Cu) as insensitive high-energy combustion catalysts of HMX-CMDB propellant

Ming Zhang,Ting An,Xiuduo Song,Fengqi Zhao,Ergang Yao,Yongqiang Xue,Ying Wang,Xueli Chen,Zhifeng Yuan,Libai Xiao

In order to deal with the long-standing contradiction between safety and performance for propellent combustion catalyst, the TKX-50-M (M=Pb, Bi and Cu) were designed, synthesized and characterized. The density, thermal decomposition, mechanical sensitivity and energy performance of the prepared TKX-50-M were studied systemically. By taking NTO-Pb as the benchmark, the TKX-50-M exhibited much better energetic and safety properties. Besides, the combination of TKX-50-Pb, TKX-50-Cu and carbon black is conductive to the combustion of HMX-CMDB propellant. The burning rate of HMX-CMDB propellant increases from 16.80 to 21.28 mm s −1 at 20 MPa, and the pressure index reduces from 0.87 to 0.39 in the pressure range of 10–20 MPa. The catalytic mechanism of TKX-50-M were explored according to the results of combustion wave structure, flame image and characteristics of burning out surface. The catalytic effect of TKX-50-Pb is mainly reflected in the gas phase region, and the introduction of TKX-50-Cu and carbon black shows a significant synergistic catalytic effect. The results of this study not only help to explore insensitive high-energy combustion catalyst, but also helps to improve the combustion, energy and safety performance of CMDB propellants.

Ferrocene functionalized graphene: preparation, characterization and application as an efficient catalyst for the thermal decomposition of TKX-50

Ming Zhang,Fengqi Zhao,Hui Li,Shuai Dong,Yanjing Yang,Xiaoting Hou,Ting An,Zhoufeng Jiang

Novel ferrocene functionalized graphene with different molecular structures were designed, fabricated and characterized via SEM, EDS, FTIR, XPS and RAMAN methods. SEM results show the two-dimensional structure of the as-prepared catalysts, and the active metal Fe is uniformly distributed on the surface of graphene. The FTIR, XPS and RAMAN results confirmed the successful preparation of ferrocene functionalized graphene. The catalytic effects of the as-synthesized catalysts for the thermal decomposition of energetic TKX-50 were monitored by DSC, and the corresponding kinetic parameters were calculated using multi kinetic methods including traditional and nonlinear models. The results showed that the as-prepared ferrocene functionalized graphene can effectively promote the thermal decomposition of TKX-50 with the reduced decomposition peak temperatures and activation energies. In addition, the effects of ferrocene functionalized graphene for TKX-50 decomposition are reflected in both high and low temperature stages, and the effect on the high temperature stage is more significant. The outstanding catalytic activity of ferrocene functionalized graphene is related not only to the good dispersion of active Fe, but also to the enhanced interaction of small molecule products on two-dimensional graphene. Among the ferrocene functionalized graphene studied, G-792-Fe and G-902-Fe exhibit better catalytic effects on the thermal decomposition of TKX-50, which can be used as candidate catalysts for TKX-50-based solid propellants.

Various graphene-salen iron nanocomplex S-551-Fe, S-602-Fe, S-902-Fe, S-590-Fe, S-792-Fe and S-550-Fe were successfully synthesized using different coupling agents. The microstructure, composition and structure of the prepared graphene-salen iron nanocomplex were characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR, XPS and RAMAN routes. The results showed the successful fabrication of graphene-salen iron nanocomplex and their two-dimensional structure. In addition, the catalytic property of the graphene-salen iron nanocomplex on the pyrolysis property of TKX-50 was investigated via DSC method, and the kinetic data was calculated by linear and nonlinear models. The positive effects of the synthesized graphene-salen iron nanocomplex for TKX-50 pyrolysis were confirmed, and the impact on the second pyrolysis procedure of TKX-50 is more significant. Among the nanocomplex considered, the S-551-Fe has better catalytic property for TKX-50 pyrolysis, and the activation energy ( E a ) of TKX-50 decreased from 163.50 to 135.55 kJ·mol −1 in the conversion degree of 0.2 ~ 0.8. In addition, the catalytic mechanism of preferred S-551-Fe for TKX-50 pyrolysis was disclosed via in situ FTIR and gas phase MS methods. This study is helpful to the precise design of graphene iron coordination catalysts and the disclosure of their catalytic mechanism for TKX-50 pyrolysis.

Effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic field at 50 Hz on myofibrillar protein from grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) during chilled storage at 4 °C

Swati Mahato,Zhiwei Zhu,Da-Wen Sun

Biological interaction with extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) is complex and the 50 and 60 Hz frequencies are among a few ‘window’ frequency ranges reported with a stimulating effect. In the current study, ELF-EMF at frequencies from 40 to 70 Hz were examined for their possible significance in inducing biological effects during chilled storage of grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idellus ) at 4 °C for 4 and 6 h. The myofibrillar protein extracted from the grass carp was analyzed and the results indicate significant (p < 0.05) increases in Ca 2+ ATPase activity and pH, and a reduction in the total sulfhydryl content during the treatment of 50 and 60 Hz frequencies for both storage durations, in particular, the treatment of 50 Hz had pronounced effects with higher correlations. Therefore, the 50 Hz might be associated with the ‘window’ effect, enhancing myofibrillar protein quality during chilled storage.

A copper-bridged fluorescent sensor for sequential detection of Cu2+ and TKX-50: Synthesis, mechanism, and applications

Junli Shi,Yongzheng Liu,Yuqi Wu,Yuxin Miao,Xianping Xin,Fanfan Shen,Linxiu Zhao,Duanlin Cao,Shengling Li

Background 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50), known as a novel explosive, is characterized by its high energy and low sensibility. It is a preferred explosive for criminals to carry out illegal attacks, posing a significant security risk. Therefore, the development of an efficient and highly specific detection method for TKX-50 is of significant practical importance. Fluorescent chemical sensors have demonstrated tremendous potential in explosive detection due to their high sensitivity, rapid response, and visual detection capabilities. Results A novel fluorescent chemical sensor N’-((E)-5-((E)-2-(3-(dicyanomethylene)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-1-en- 1-yl )vinyl)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carbohydrazide ( EXF ) was designed and synthesized, and its structure was characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and HRMS. The sensor can achieve continuous and specific detection of Cu 2+ and TKX-50 through the ‘on-off-on’ fluorescence response. The EXF achieved a detection limit of 0.0968 μM for Cu 2+ . The complex [ EXF -Cu 2+ ] could specifically identify the novel explosive TKX-50 among a variety of explosives tested, with a detection limit of 0.0648 μM. In this study, the qualitative detection of Cu 2+ and TKX-50 was carried out using test strips, and the quantitative determination of Cu 2+ and TKX-50 in real water samples was successfully achieved based on the standard curve of a smartphone. Additionally, EXF can be used for the visualization of latent fingerprints (LFPs), demonstrating its potential application in the field of criminal investigations. The application of EXF for Cu 2+ and TKX-50 imaging in living cells is also demonstrated. Significance The fluorescent sensor EXF establishes a connection between explosive detection and ion sensing by utilizing Cu 2+ as a “bridge”. This research not only provides innovative explosive detection technologies, but also offers valuable design principles for multifunctional fluorescent sensors. The test strips and smartphone platform have preliminarily achieved on-site rapid qualitative and quantitative detection. And the LFPs imaging and detection in living cells further expand the application field, which has significant practical application value.

Effects of additive dosage and coagulation bath pH on amphoteric fluorocarbon special surfactant (FS-50) blend PVDF membranes

Hailong Liu,Xiangjun Liao,Yuxia Ren

Amphiphilic copolymers containing hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks represented by surfactants have proven to be more effective for modifying membranes than hydrophilic copolymers. However, studies on the effects of additive and coagulation bath pH on the morphology and properties of surfactant-modified membranes have rarely been reported. Hence, this study aims to investigate the effects of the additive dosage and the coagulation bath pH on the mechanisms of phase inversion and performance improvement of amphoteric fluorocarbon special surfactant (FS-50) blended PVDF membranes. It was observed that the pure water flux increased from 114.68 LMH/bar of the original membrane M0 to 205.02 LMH/bar of the blend membrane M1, and then to 615.88 LMH/bar of the coagulation-bath-regulated membrane MPH9 with a high BSA rejection rate of 90.86%, showing a two-stage jump. The addition of FS-50 promoted the instantaneous phase inversion of the membrane, allowing the blend membrane to exhibit a higher proportion of pore characteristics and stronger permeability. After that, the mechanisms of the membrane phase inversion process affected by the coagulation bath pH were interpreted according to the pH-response characteristics of FS-50 in terms of charge repulsion effect and compressed double-electron layer effect. Furthermore, the cross-sectional morphology and the surface structure of the membrane prepared in acidic and alkaline coagulation baths were significantly affected by the pH of the coagulation bath, exhibiting different features. For one, the porosity of the membranes gradually decreased as the acidity and alkalinity of the coagulation bath increased, and the membrane MPH9 exhibited both maximum surface and overall porosity. For another, the coagulation bath pH did not negatively affect the contact angle, surface roughness and tensile strength of the membranes. Overall, adjusting the dosage of FS-50 and the pH of the coagulation bath is a promising approach to greatly enhance membrane performance.

Effects of pH and Salt Concentration on Assembly and Disassembly of the PEOX-EI-50/PAA Complex Containing Hydrogen Bonding and Electrostatic Force Dual Interaction

Wenyuan Lang,Wanting Zhang,Nuojin Zhang,Hao Huang,Feng Lin,Aimin Ge,Bing Xue,Shuguang Yang

Polymer complexes containing multiple interactions have attracted considerable interest in the development of advanced and multifunctional materials. The fundamental study on multi-interacted polymer complexes helps understand their properties and facilitates rational material design; however, it has been less systematically explored. In this work, a PEOX-EI-50/PAA complex with a dual interaction of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic force is prepared via stepwise interfacial complexation. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) measurements indicate pH-dependent PEOX-EI-50/PAA complexation with the optimal assembly pH at 4. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) results prove the coexistence of the hydrogen bond and electrostatic interaction in the PEOX-EI-50/PAA assembly at specific pH levels and reveal that the high-affinity binding site transits from hydrogen bonding to electrostatic bonding as the pH increases from 3 to 4. In addition, hydrogen bonding could alleviate the inhibition of the electrostatic interaction between complementary polymers by salt, leading to the successful assembly of PEOX-EI-50/PAA in the presence of 1 M NaCl. A pseudo-mass-loss phenomenon is observed during PEOX-EI-50/PAA complexation, which can be further amended by eliminating charge density mismatch through pH/salt concentration adjustment. PEOX-EI-50/PAA exhibits improved pH stability compared with the PEOX/PAA hydrogen-bonding system and exceptional salt stability compared with the PEI/PAA polyelectrolyte pairs, indicating the advantage of the polymer complex with dual interaction.

Construction of polyurethane/chitosan hybrid foam for dihydroxylammonium 5, 5′-bistetrazole-1, 1′-diolate removal

Rui Huang,Lizhi Lin,Jinghua Zhang,Shaohua Jin,Qingquan Tian,Ziming Yang,Puwang Li,Yu Chen

Dihydroxylammonium 5, 5′-bistetrazole-1, 1′-diolate (TKX-50) is a new high-energy and insensitive material with broad application prospects. However, the discharge of TKX-50 wastewater from its production and applications not only causes the waste of high-value explosives, but also pollutes the environment. The traditional used adsorbents are poor adsorption efficiencies and recyclability performance in pratical applications. In this study, we successfully prepared a porous polyurethane/chitosan hybrid foam (PUF) with chitosan (CTS) as the active adsorption component by the semi-prepolymerization/acidification method. The compressive strength of the PUF can reach up to 8.83 kPa, and the static adsorption capacity of TKX-50 can reach 39.32 mg/g. The TKX-50 adsorption process and mechanism were further studied by the adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics. The adsorbed TKX-50 was effectively recovered by NaOH solution, with a desorption rate exceeding 94 %. The dynamic adsorption investigation indicates that the PUF is suitable for industrial continuous flow wastewater treatment process in practical engineering. In all, our work has explored a new construction strategy of chitosan composited recyclable polyurethane hybrid foam materials with high TKX-50 adsorption efficiencies, and the obtained hybrid foam exhibits great application potentials for the treatment of TKX-50-containing wastewaters.

An aqueous magnesium-ion hybrid supercapacitor operated at −50 °C

Guoshen Yang,Gangrui Qu,Chi Fang,Jie Deng,Xianqi Xu,Yinghao Xie,Tian Sun,Yachao Zhu,Jiaxin Zheng,Hang Zhou

The recent advances in aqueous magnesium-ion hybrid supercapacitor (MHSC) have attracted great attention as it brings together the benefits of high energy density, high power density, and synchronously addresses cost and safety issues. However, the freeze of aqueous electrolytes discourages aqueous MHSC from operating at low-temperature conditions. Here, a low-concentration aqueous solution of 4 mol L −1  Mg(ClO 4 ) 2 is devised for its low freezing point (−67 °C) and ultra-high ionic conductivity (3.37 mS cm −1 at −50 °C). Both physical characterizations and computational simulations revealed that the Mg(ClO 4 ) 2 can effectively disrupt the original hydrogen bond network among water molecules via transmuting the electrolyte structure, thus yielding a low freezing point. Thus, the Mg(ClO 4 ) 2 electrolytes endue aqueous MHSC with a wider temperature operation range (−50 °C–25 °C) and a higher energy density of 103.9 Wh kg −1 at 3.68 kW kg −1 over commonly used magnesium salts (i.e., MgSO 4 and Mg(NO 3 ) 2 ) electrolytes. Furthermore, a quasi-solid-state MHSC based on polyacrylamide-based hydrogel electrolyte holds superior low-temperature performance, excellent flexibility, and high safety. This work pioneers a convenient, cheap, and eco-friendly tactic to procure low-temperature aqueous magnesium-ion energy storage device.

Preparation of Few-Layered WS2 and Its Thermal Catalysis for Dihydroxylammonium-5,5-Bistetrazole-1,1-Diolate

Yiping Shang,Wu Yang,Yabei Xu,Siru Pan,Huayu Wang,Xiong Cao

In this study, few-layered tungsten disulfide (WS2) was prepared using a liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) method, and its thermal catalytic effects on an important kind of energetic salts, dihydroxylammonium-5,5-bistetrazole-1,1-diolate (TKX-50), were investigated. Few-layered WS2 nanosheets were obtained successfully from LPE process. And the effects of the catalytic activity of the bulk and few-layered WS2 on the thermal decomposition behavior of TKX-50 were studied by using synchronous thermal analysis (STA). Moreover, the thermal analysis data was analyzed furtherly by using the thermokinetic software AKTS. The results showed the WS2 materials had an intrinsic thermal catalysis performance for TKX-50 thermal decomposition. With the few-layered WS2 added, the initial decomposition temperature and activation energy () of TKX-50 had been decreased more efficiently. A possible thermal catalysis decomposition mechanism was proposed based on WS2. Two dimensional-layered semiconductor WS2 materials under thermal excitation can promote the primary decomposition of TKX-50 by enhancing the H-transfer progress.

Tactile Sensing for Soft Robotic Manipulators in 50 MPa Hydrostatic Pressure Environments

Shaoyu Liu,Daohui Zhang,Xin Fu,Liyan Mo,Qile Miao,Rong Huang,Xin Huang,Wei Guo,Yangyang Li,Qingyang Zheng,Ganguang Yang,Kun Bai,Bin Xie,Zhoupin Yin,Hao Wu

Deep-sea exploration remains a challenging task as the extreme hydrostatic pressure environment, darkness, and suspended sediment launch severely hinder the capability of deep-sea vehicles. As a complement to underwater camera, tactile perception becomes especially important in situations where machine vision is limited. However, tactile sensors utilized in deep sea, which should be able to detect pressure changes of only hundreds of pascals under high hydrostatic pressure, are still lacking. To tackle the challenge imposed by hydrostatic pressure, a simulated deep-sea environment flexible sensor (SDEFS) is proposed, consisting of a force sensor array and a bending sensor based on hydrogels for tactile sensing in 50 MPa hydrostatic pressure environments. The force sensor is unaffected by the hydrostatic pressure and achieves high sensitivity of 82.62 N −1 under 100 MPa hydrostatic pressure. The SDEFS is utilized to classify objects based on the difference in hardness. It can accurately classify seven objects on the ground, and three objects in an underwater environment with hydrostatic pressure of 50 MPa, with total recognition accuracies of 98.3% and 96%, respectively. With high force measurement sensitivity and accurate recognition ability under water, the SDEFS is expected to provide very valuable haptic sensing and feedback in deep-sea exploration.

Reconstruction of zinc-metal battery solvation structures operating from −50 ~ +100 °C

Yao Lingbo,Liu Jiahe,Zhang Feifan,Wen Bo,Chi Xiaowei,Liu Yu

Serious solvation effect of zinc ions has been considered as the cause of the severe side reactions (hydrogen evolution, passivation, dendrites, and etc.) of aqueous zinc metal batteries. Even though the regulation of cationic solvation structure has been widely studied, effects of the anionic solvation structures on the zinc metal were rarely examined. Herein, co-reconstruction of anionic and cationic solvation structures was realized through constructing a new multi-component electrolyte (Zn(BF 4 ) 2 -glycerol-boric acid-chitosan-polyacrylamide, simplified as ZGBCP), which incorporates double crosslinking network via the esterification, protonation and polymerization reactions, thereby combining multiple advantages of ‘liquid-like’ high conductivity, ‘gel-like’ robust interface, and ‘solid-like’ high Zn 2+ transfer number. Based on the ZGBCP electrolyte, the Zn anodes achieve record-low polarization and stable cycling. Furthermore, the ZGBCP electrolyte renders the AZMBs ultrawide working temperature (−50 °C ~ +100 °C) and ultralong cycle life (30000 cycles), which further validates the feasibility of the dual solvation structure strategy and provides a innovative perspective for the development of high-performance AZMBs.
