Mechanistic insights into the enhanced photocatalytic performance of a TiO2-In2S3 heterojunction for efficient Rhodamine B degradation

Feng-Xiao Xue,Shuang Wang,Yushuai Sang,Xiao-Qian Feng,Huan Wang,Xuelan Hou,Yong-Hua Zhao

The growing global concern over water pollution has amplified the demand for advanced, sustainable water treatment technologies. Photocatalysis offers a promising solution for effectively removing toxic organic contaminants, such as Rhodamine B (RhB), without generating secondary pollutants. However, despite the widespread use of TiO 2 -In 2 S 3 heterojunctions as photocatalysts to overcome the limitations of TiO 2 , the mechanisms behind their enhanced performance still need to be explored. In this study, a TiO 2 -In 2 S 3 photocatalyst with a heterojunction was constructed, and its enhanced photocatalytic performance was demonstrated by 90.6% degradation of RhB within 30 min, with a degradation rate constant 6.01 times that of pure TiO 2 and 4.89 times that of In 2 S 3 . Mechanistic investigations, including density functional theory calculations, revealed that hydroxyl radicals were the primary active species in the degradation process. Moreover, the TiO 2 -In 2 S 3 heterojunction enhanced the adsorption and stabilization of reaction intermediates, optimizing both reaction kinetics and selectivity. These findings highlight the potential of TiO 2 -In 2 S 3 heterojunctions as highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Stabilizing Rh nanoparticles using a TiO2 array with oxygen vacancies for high-performance pH-wide hydrogen evolution

Guangxia Wang,Wenhui Wang,Yaozhong Yu,Tao Hu,Juan Ding,Yongming Sui

Active and durable catalysts are crucial for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In the volcano plot, rhodium (Rh) and platinum (Pt) are positioned closely, while the activity and stability of Rh are much inferior to those of Pt. Here, we developed a Rh/TiO2/Ti electrocatalyst to mitigate Pt dependency. The in situ formed TiO2 with oxygen vacancies was prepared utilizing Ti foam as the Ti source. The TiO2 support can confine Rh nanoparticles and ensure charge accumulation at the Rh site, while Rh can enhance the conductivity of TiO2. DFT calculations demonstrate that the strong interaction between Rh and TiO2 could regulate the electronic structure of Rh, thereby accelerating water dissociation and optimizing the adsorption strength of *H. Consequently, compared to Rh/Ti, Rh/TiO2/Ti exhibits significantly enhanced HER activity, requiring overpotentials of only 37.3 and 34.3 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2 in the alkaline and acidic HER, respectively. Furthermore, the vertical nanoarray structure, surface roughness, and metal–support interaction endow Rh/TiO2/Ti with remarkable durability. It works in both alkaline and acidic media for 120 hours at 10 mA cm−2 with unnoticeable activity decline, outperforming commercial Pt/C. This work provides a strategy to overcome the activity and stability limitations of Rh-based catalysts, providing references for promising catalysts for water electrolysis.

Enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of a TiO2/carbon aerogel based on a hydrophilic secondary pore structure

Hua'nan Cui,Zhenxing Liang,JinZhong Zhang,Hong Liu,Jianying Shi

Improving the separation and utilization of electrons and holes in a photocatalytic process is a guarantee for high photocatalytic efficiency. We report a strategy to enhance the photocatalytic performance based on fabrication of a hydrophilic secondary pore structure by incorporating TiO2 into a porous carbon aerogel (CA) with a 9.3 nm pore diameter, where TiO2 resides on both the inner and outer surfaces of CA as evidenced by N2 sorption isotherms and transmission electron microscopy. In such a structure, the spatial separation efficiency of photoelectrons and photoholes is supposed to get enhanced with interface electrons transferring into the inner surface of the pores via conductive CA. As a result, HO˙ formation can be promoted in the confined inter surface of the hydrophilic secondary channel through O2 reduction with the participation of photoelectrons and H2O. And the remaining photoholes on the outer surface can oxidize water to generate HO˙ as well. In contrast, TiO2 is mainly dispersed on the outer surface of CA as small pore diameters of 3.4 and 4.3 nm; as a result, only uncombined photoholes on the outer surface contribute to HO˙ generation via the water oxidation route. In line with this understanding, TiO2/CA (9.3 nm) shows the largest amount of HO˙ and thereby the highest efficiency of dimethyl phthalate degradation, as respectively evidenced by the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and the photocatalytic degradation test. These findings unveil the contribution of the surface/interface synergy effect on the separation and utilization of electrons and holes in photocatalytic process, and provide a potential strategy to enhance the photocatalytic performance.

Self-powered sensor based on a TiO2 NTAs/FeN5 SACs photocatalytic fuel cell for sensing chemical oxygen demand

Yuehan Zhang,He Zhang,Xiaoxuan Sun,Panpan Zhao,Junfeng Zhai,Shaojun Dong

Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is a crucial parameter in assessing water quality. Due to the improved public awareness of environmental protection, the rapid, eco-friendly, and cost-effective methods for COD measurement are highly desired. This work proposes a new self-powered COD sensor (SPCS), based on a photocatalytic fuel cell composed of a FeN 5 single-atom nanozymes (FeN 5 SACs)/ITO cathode and a TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TiO 2 NTAs)/Ti photoanode. Because organic compounds are able to be involved as anodic fuels, the detection of COD with the SPCS could be achieved by simply measuring the deviation in short circuit current. The COD detection range is determined to be from 0.5 to 49.4 mg/L, with the limit of detection of 1.38 mg/L. The SPCS possesses satisfactory anti-interference ability against anions including Cl - and SO 4 2- , and high stability even after 60-day storage. For real sample analysis, satisfactory reproducibility (RSD < 6 %), and low relative error (2.48–6.52 %) have been obtained. Besides, the sensor offers the advantages of cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness, and fast response (< 1 min). Consequently, the SPCS could be regarded as a promising candidate for the sensing of COD.

Efficiency enhancement in an inverted organic light-emitting device with a TiO2 electron injection layer through interfacial engineering

Chunxiu Zang,Hui Wang,Shihao Liu,Wenbin Guo,Letian Zhang,Wenfa Xie

TiO2 is widely used in optoelectronic devices especially organic solar cells due to its excellent optical and electrical properties. However, its application in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) as an electron injection layer (EIL) usually suffers from insufficient electron injection and serious interfacial quenching, leading to low efficiency. In this work, efficiency enhancement of inverted OLEDs (IOLEDs) based on a TiO2 EIL by introducing various interlayers (ILs) is reported. Polyethylenimine (PEI), 10,10′-[5-(6-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl-2-phenyl-4-pyrimidinyl)-1,3-phenylene] bis[9,10-dihydro-9,9-dimethyl-acridine] (DMAC-BPP) and 2,2′,2′′-(1,3,5-benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) (TPBI) are adopted as ILs to reduce quenching, improve electron injection by achieving stepped energy levels and achieve efficient exciton confinement. Compared with devices using PEI/TPBI interlayers, over 40% enhancement of the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) for TiO2-based IOLEDs by introducing DMAC-BPP interlayers is achieved. Furthermore, efficient carrier confinement and more balanced carrier injection are achieved by inserting a thin TPBI between DMAC-BPP and the emitting layer (EML), and then, the EQEmax is improved to 17.68%, which is the highest record for TiO2-based IOLEDs.

(NH4)3TiOF5 mesocrystals grown by electric-field-assisted oriented-particle aggregation and their conversion to a TiO2 superstructure

Zixue Su,Hui Li

This work reports an electrochemical synthesis of (NH 4 ) 3 TiOF 5 mesocrystals consisting of nanocrystalline building units, via oriented particle attachment driven by an external electric field. The obtained (NH 4 ) 3 TiOF 5 mesocrystals are octahedral in shape and can be converted to porous anatase TiO 2 , retaining their octahedral morphology after thermal annealing treatment. A distinctive evolution process for the (NH 4 ) 3 TiOF 5 mesocrystals with octahedral morphology is revealed, which includes the nucleation and growth of primary small octahedral particles, oriented aggregation of six primary octahedral particles into one large secondary particle, formation of mesocrystalline octahedrons by crystallographic fusion, dissolution of the octahedrons into small nanoparticles, followed by oriented aggregation of the dissolved nanoparticles to form micrometer-sized octahedrons. The alignment and subsequent oriented attachment of nanoparticles driven by an external electric field enable the rapid growth of (NH 4 ) 3 TiOF 5 mesocrystals within 40 s, compared with the tens of hours usually required for the growth of NH 4 TiOF 3 mesocrystals using a hydrothermal method.

Highly Sensitive Simultaneous Detection of Multiple Mycotoxins Using a Protein Microarray on a TiO2-Modified Porous Silicon Surface

Jianlin Li,Tingting Cai,Wei Li,Weiwei Li,Laicui Song,Qianjin Li,Guangping Lv,Jialong Sun,Saisai Jiao,Siwei Wang,Yu Jin,Tiesong Zheng

A new protein microarray method for multiplex mycotoxin detection in parallel has been established on a stable TiO2-modified porous silicon (PSi) surface. A typical competitive immunoassay microarray protocol has been developed for simultaneous detection of multiplex mycotoxins including aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), ochratoxin A (OTA), and fumonisin B1 (FB1) on the TiO2-PSi surface. The epoxy groups were selected to modify the surface of a TiO2-PSi wafer for the immobilization of artificial antigens of mycotoxins because of their high signal-to-noise ratios. Under optimal conditions, the developed method showed wide linear detection ranges of 0.01–1 ng/mL for OTA, 0.001–1 ng/mL for AFB1, and 0.01–1 ng/mL for FB1 and low limit of detections (LODs) of 0.433 ng/mL for OTA, 0.243 ng/mL for AFB1, and 0.093 ng/mL for FB1. The microarray method can specifically identify the three mycotoxins and their analogues. The recovery rates in real samples were within 75–120%, which were in agreement with that of the classical ELISA method. The new method has great application potential for rapid, sensitive, and high-throughput screening of multiplex mycotoxins and other target molecules.

Batch and Continuous-Flow Preparation of Biomass-Derived Furfural Acetals over a TiO2 Nanoparticle-Exfoliated Montmorillonite Composite Catalyst

Bo Zhou,Fan Song,Xinyue Ma,Lijun Wang

Graphical The batch is back : A scalable green catalyst system based on a TiO 2 nanoparticle–exfoliated montmorillonite composite catalyst with hard Lewis acid sites and abundant accessible Brønsted acid sites is developed for the rapid preparation of furfural acetals, which are a promising biofuel with high octane value, high calorific value, and high oxidation resistance. Furfural acetals with high octane value, high calorific value and high oxidation resistance are considered promising biofuels or fuel precursors with huge potential demand. However, there are few studies on efficient scalable catalyst systems, including continuous-flow catalyst systems, for their preparation. In this work, TiO 2 nanoparticles supported on exfoliated montmorillonite, with strong Lewis acid sites and abundant accessible Brønsted acid sites, is used to catalyze the acetalization reactions of biomass-derived furfural and alcohols. Low dosage of the catalyst made the reaction reach equilibrium in a very short time (TOF=690–1305 min −1 ) at room temperature with the acetal as the only product. In continuous-flow reactions, the catalyst showed a stable product output with conversion close to that for the batch reaction with a short catalyst-reactant contact time of 150 s. Contrast experiments revealed that both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites on the catalyst were indispensable for maximizing the catalytic performance, and simultaneously activating both furfural and alcohol on the adjacent Lewis and Brønsted acid sites was proposed to be responsible for the high catalytic performance.

Simultaneously Constructing a TiO2–LiF Composite Coating Enhancing the Cycling Stability of LiCoO2 at 4.6 V High Voltage

Zhengfeng Wang,Xinyi Dai,Haijun Chen,Fuzhong Wu,Yi Mai,Shuie Li,Yijing Gu,Jingze Li,Aijun Zhou

The surface and interface stability of the electrode is an important factor affecting the electrochemical performance of the battery, and surface modification is an effective means to stabilize the electrode surface interface. In this paper, a TiO2–LiF composite coating layer with very stable chemical properties on the LiCoO2 (LCO) surface is prepared in one step. At the same time, surface doping is realized, which provided a stable surface structure for LCO and stabilized the interface between the electrode and electrolyte. Electrochemical test results show that in the range of 3–4.5 V, the capacity retention rate of the sample with a coating amount of 1% is 97.4% after 110 cycles at 0.2 C and a discharge capacity of 151.5 mAh g–1 at 5 C, while the bare electrode is only 67% (110th cycle) and 50.7 mAh g–1 under the same conditions. Even at 0.5 C within 3–4.6 V, the capacity retention rate of the coated sample is still as high as 88.6% after 100 cycles, showing excellent high-voltage cycle stability. Studies such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy show that the improvement in electrochemical performance is due to the coating layer effectively stabilizing the LCO surface composition and structure, alleviating the structural degradation of LCO, and optimizing the lithium-ion transport channel.

15% efficient carbon based planar-heterojunction perovskite solar cells using a TiO2/SnO2 bilayer as the electron transport layer

Zhiyong Liu,Bo Sun,Xingyue Liu,Jinghui Han,Haibo Ye,Yuxue Tu,Chen Chen,Tielin Shi,Zirong Tang,Guanglan Liao

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are one of the most promising lab-scale technologies to deliver inexpensive solar electricity. Low-temperature printable carbon counter electrode based planar-heterojunction PSCs are particularly suitable for future large-scale manufacturing, but suffer from an inferior efficiency. Here, we demonstrate a TiO2/SnO2 bilayer as the electron transport layer (ETL) for carbon counter electrode based planar-heterojunction PSCs together with micromolecule Cu-phthalocyanine (CuPc) as the hole transport layer (HTL), yielding a high power conversion efficiency of 15.39% and an excellent stability over 1200 h. The improved performances are attributed to a better energy level transition, a suppressed electron–hole recombination, and a wider depletion region of the TiO2/SnO2 bilayer. Our work represents a great advancement in the fabrication and popularization of carbon counter electrode based PSCs. More importantly, the whole devices are processed at a temperature below 200 °C, providing potential application of PSCs in monolithic tandem devices and paving the way for the development of carbon based flexible PSCs.

A TiO2@MWCNTs-based dispersive solid-phase extraction method for mitigating matrix effects in plasma LC–MS/MS analysis

Yagang Li,Shuyan Huo,Yunhui Xing,Yonghang He,Wei Wu,Min Huang,Yiming Jiang,Guoping Zhong,Weiwei Zeng

Novel TiO 2 @MWCNTs composites were designed and synthesized, which exhibit potential as purification materials for phospholipid removal from rat plasma samples. • A dispersive solid-phase extraction method based on TiO 2 @MWCNTs showed the capacity to mitigate matrix effects in rat plasma samples for small-molecule analytes with low lg P . • An LC–MS/MS method was established and validated for quantifying representative drugs using TiO 2 @MWCNTs and applied to a pharmacokinetic study of metformin. The matrix effect is a prevalent interference in LC–MS/MS bioanalysis of small-molecule drugs, with lipids as a major source of such interference in plasma matrices. Leveraging the lipid-adsorbing capability of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), this study synthesized TiO 2 @MWCNTs composites and developed a novel dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) method to reduce matrix effects in rat plasma. Lipid profiles were compared to characterize the lipid purification capacity of TiO 2 @MWCNTs in rat plasma samples. The matrix effects of representative small-molecule drugs, including metformin, amisulpride, and aripiprazole, were compared across TiO 2 @MWCNTs-based d-SPE, protein precipitation, and traditional solid-phase extraction. Method validation and sample determination were subsequently performed. The results demonstrated that TiO 2 could be successfully loaded onto MWCNTs. The responses of 72 differential lipid ions were significantly reduced by at least 2-fold after TiO 2 @MWCNTs treatment, and the IS-normalized matrix factors for metformin (from 13.69 to 20.00% to 31.49–44.39%) and amisulpride (from 71.01 to 84.82% to 91.69–101.48%) as well as accuracy for aripiprazole at low concentration were significantly improved compared with protein precipitation treatment. Method validation results confirmed excellent selectivity, accuracy, precision, and reproducibility. The validated method was also successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study of metformin with pharmacokinetic parameters comparable to those reported previously. This study shows that the dispersive solid-phase extraction method based on TiO 2 @MWCNTs could act as a simple, rapid, low-cost and reliable pretreatment strategy to mitigate matrix effects for small-molecule analytes with low lg P in rat plasma as a proof-of-concept attempt.

A TiO2 mesocrystals triggered signal amplification strategy of photoelectrochemical immunoassay for α-fetoprotein detection based on indirect competitive reaction

Yanjie Chen,Shupei Zhang,Xiuhua Li,Hong Dai,Yanyu Lin

A versatile TiO 2 mesocrystals trigged signal amplification photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform was designed for sensitive and accurate determination of α-fetoprotein (AFP). To construct such a biosensor, Bi 2 S 3 nanosheets with notable visible light photoactivity and biocompatibilities were employed as electron transfer mediator as well as a substrate for AFP antigen immobilization. Meanwhile, the Polyethylenimine (PEI) functionalized TiO 2 mesocrystals was used to anchor AFP antibody and the resulting composite Ab-TiO 2 -PEI was utilized as trace tag for signal amplification. The trace tag anchored onto the electrode interface via indirect competitive recognition between free target AFP and immobilized AFP to combine Ab-TiO 2 -PEI. As a result, a cascade structure of band-edge levels formed between TiO 2 mesocrystals and Bi 2 S 3 nanosheets, which notably promoted the photo-to-current conversion efficiency and enhance photocurrent response significantly. By merit of these, the concentration of AFP could be accurately determined through an indirect competitive reaction immunoassay . Upon the optimal condition, this PEC biosensor performed favorable sensitivity, selectivity and reproducibility. Hence, the designed indirect competitive PEC immunoassay possesses a potential application for clinical test and will inspire more development of simple and practical PEC sensor toward different biomolecules.
