Infected wound healing remains a significant clinical challenge due to bacterial resistance and excessive inflammation. Herein, a multifunctional hydrogel dressing (Nb2C-Arg/Gel) is developed that integrates two-dimensional Nb2C nanosheets (photothermal agent) and arginine [nitric oxide (NO) donor] into a calcium ion cross-linked sodium alginate matrix. The hydrogel has a relatively high swelling capacity and good ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are beneficial for absorbing wound exudate and reducing the inflammatory response of wounds. Under irradiation with a low-power NIR-II laser (1064 nm, 1 W cm–2), Nb2C-Arg/Gel achieves rapid photothermal heating (48.6 °C in 1 min), while thermally enhances arginine decomposition-triggered on-demand NO release. This synergistic mechanism provides superior antimicrobial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus (97.65%) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (90.05%). In vivo studies on MRSA-infected murine wounds demonstrate that the residual area on day 10 was 2.9%, which accelerated healing compared to that of the control group (17.8%), accompanied by reduced inflammation and enhanced angiogenesis. The excellent biocompatibility of hydrogel is validated by low hemolysis (<5%) and promoted fibroblast proliferation (125% cell viability). Combining with photothermal, NO-mediated antibacterial action, and ROS scavenging to alleviate oxidative stress, this antibiotic-free hydrogel dressing has great potential for clinical application for the treatment of refractory-infected wounds.

The development of high-performance catalysts for aqueous-phase reforming of ethanol (APRE) is essential for advancing sustainable hydrogen production and achieving carbon neutrality. Herein, we report a N-doped carbon-encapsulated Cu nanoparticle catalyst (Cu@SS-Arg), which enhances hydrogen selectivity and suppresses carbon-containing gas byproducts. The Cu@SS-Arg catalyst, which has been optimized, achieves a H2 production rate of 31.2 μmol/gcat/s with a H2 selectivity of 99.99% at 210 °C, while concomitantly reducing CO emissions in comparison to commercial precious metal catalysts. In situ DRIFTS and TPSR-MS analyses demonstrate that the Cu+/Cu0 active sites not only promote ethanol/water activation but also facilitate the C–H/O–H bond cleavage, thus favoring the ethanol dehydrogenation (via *CH3CH2O, *CH3CHO, and *CH3COOH intermediates), water dissociation (*H2O → *OH + *H) and carbon monoxide conversion (*CO + *OH → *CO2 + *H) pathways over C–C bond cleavage. This work presents a dual strategy for designing nonprecious metal catalysts that synergistically integrates structural stabilization with N-doping regulation. Together, these approaches enable sustainable and low-carbon production of hydrogen from renewable ethanol.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) of a small diameter were loaded with the anticancer drug temozolomide (TMZ), coated with polydopamine (PDA), and conjugated with Asn-Gly-Arg (NGR) for use in the treatment of glioma. The accumulation of NGR-MSNPs in C6 cells was shown to be higher than that of unmodified MSNPs. Anticancer drugs can cause autophagy in tumor cells, whereas autophagy inhibitors can block this reaction and enhance the therapeutic effect of the drugs. In this study, we demonstrated that MSNP-TMZ-PDA-NGR had stronger autophagy- and apoptosis-inducing effects in C6 cells than TMZ alone, and its anticancer effect was further enhanced when combined with autophagy inhibition. These results demonstrate that the combination of targeting vehicles and autophagy inhibitors may have research value in the treatment of gliomas.

To investigate the association of miR-106b-5p with neuroinflammation and microglial activation in a status epilepticus (SE) mouse model. We examined changes in the expression of microRNA-106b-5p (miRNA-106b-5p), repulsive guidance molecule A (RGMa), triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2), and the microglia-related markers interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and arginase-1 (Arg-1) in the mouse hippocampus of the lithium–pilocarpine-induced SE mouse model. Eighty-four female C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into a normal control group ( n = 12), and six SE groups ( n = 12/group), which were monitored at 6 h and at 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21 days (d) post-SE induction. Unlike in the dentate gyrus, immunohistochemical staining revealed prominent neuronal swelling at 6 h, significant neuronal loss and apoptosis on day 3, and recovery by day 14 in the hippocampal cornu ammonis (CA)1 and CA3 pyramidal cells in SE mice. We noted elevated levels of miRNA-106b-5p and all microglia-related markers, which peaked at 3 days post-SE, except IL-4, which peaked at 7 days post-SE, indicating inflammation and microglial activation. RGMa and TREM2 levels decreased at 6 h post-SE. All markers but miRNA-106b-5p, RGMa, and TREM2 returned to baseline levels at 21 days post-SE. Dual luciferase reporter gene assay showed that microRNA-106b-5p can interact with RGMa. We observed that miR-106b-5p level increased while both RGMa and TREM2 levels decreased post-SE and showed associations with microglial activation and inflammation in the mouse hippocampus, suggesting their potential as SE therapeutic targets.

TiO 2 nano-porous arrays with appropriate structural parameters, roughness and wettability have application potential in implantable titanium-based (Ti-based) alloys. In this research, the polydopamine (PDA) and Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptide are adopted to construct a favorable osteogenic microenvironment on the anodized TiO 2 nano-porous arrays before and after heat treatment. The characterization of surface morphologies and chemical compositions has been conducted to confirm the feasibility of the PDA-based modification and RGD peptide immobilization. Via immersion in the modified-simulated body fluid (m-SBF) for 7 days, the PDA-based modified samples have represented enhanced biomineralization performance. Moreover, the cell adhesion and proliferation assay, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assay in vitro have indicated that the heat-treated TiO 2 nano-porous arrays modified with PDA and RGD peptide have endowed the seeded MC3T3-E1 mouse pre-osteoblasts with excellent osteogenic performance. Such modified TiO 2 nano-porous arrays have great latent capacity in implantable materials for biomineralization and osteogenesis.

The development of alternative strategies for the efficient treatment of subcutaneous abscesses that do not require the massive use of antibiotics and surgical intervention is urgently needed. Herein, a novel synergistic antibacterial strategy based on photodynamic (PDT) and NO gas therapy is reported, in which, a PDT-driven NO controllable generation system (Ce6@Arg-ADP) is developed with l -Arg-rich amphiphilic dendritic peptide (Arg-ADP) as a carrier. This carrier not only displays superior bacterial association and biofilm penetration performance, but also acts as a versatile NO donor. Following efficient penetration into the interior of the biofilms, Ce6@Arg-ADP can rapidly produce massive NO via utilizing the H 2 O 2 generated during PDT to oxidize Arg-ADP to NO and l -citrulline, without affecting singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) production. The combination of 1 O 2 and the reactive by-products of NO offers notable synergistic antibacterial and biofilm eradication effects. Importantly, following efficient elimination of all bacteria from the abscess site, Arg-ADP can further generate trace quantities of NO to facilitate the angiogenesis and epithelialization of the wound tissues, thereby notably promotes wound healing. Together, this study clearly suggests that Arg-ADP is a versatile NO donor, and the combination of PDT and NO represents a promising strategy for the efficient treatment of subcutaneous abscesses.

Carbon/carbon (C/C) composites were deposited with graphite-like carbon (GLC) coating, and then, Arg-Gly-Asp acid (RGD) peptides were successfully immobilized onto the functionalized GLC coating. GLC coating was utilized to prevent carbon particles releasing and create a uniform surface condition for C/C composites. RGD peptides were utilized to improve biocompatibility of GLC coating. Surface chemical characterizations of functionalized GLC coating were detected by contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectra. Optical morphology of GLC coatings was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. In vitro biological performance was determined using samples seeded with MC3T3-E1 osteoblast-like cells and cultured for 1 week. Surface characterizations and morphological analysis indicated that C/C composites were covered by a dense and uniform GLC coating. Contact angle of GLC coating was reduced to 27.2° when it was functionalized by H 2 O 2 oxidation at 40 °C for 1 h. In vitro cytological test showed that the RGD peptides immobilized GLC coating had a significant improvement in biocompatibility. It was suggested that RGD peptides provided GLC coating with a bioactive surface to improve cell adhesion and proliferation on C/C composites.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections remain a critical public health concern worldwide, with conventional antibacterial strategies presenting limitations such as inconsistent target localization, suboptimal therapeutic efficiency, and progressive antimicrobial resistance development. Nitric oxide (NO), a bioactive molecule, exhibits potent antibacterial effects, resulting in the emergence of NO-based gas therapy as a promising and innovative therapeutic strategy. However, these therapies present the principal challenge of effective NO delivery, owing to its short half-life and limited diffusion capacity. Hence, this study aimed to develop AI‑molybdenum disulfide (L-Arg/IR780@MoS 2 ) nanoflowers (NFs) employing L-arginine (L-Arg) as an endogenous NO precursor and MoS 2 as a dual carrier for L-Arg and IR780 iodide (IR780). Following near-infrared irradiation during photodynamic therapy, generated reactive oxygen species initiated an oxidation cascade for L-Arg-to-NO conversion. The produced NO, in combination with photothermal therapy, modulated the bacterial microenvironment. This significantly altered the expression of key genes in MDR bacteria associated with nucleotide metabolism and biofilm formation, thereby effectively disrupting biofilms and suppressing bacterial growth. Furthermore, the AI-MoS 2 NFs exhibited notable ancillary therapeutic benefits, including anti-inflammatory activity, enhanced re-epithelialization, increased collagen deposition, and angiogenesis modulation, which collectively accelerated wound healing. Altogether, the findings of this study present a synergistic therapeutic strategy designed to address the dual challenges posed by bacterial biofilms and antimicrobial resistance.

BACKGROUND Dynamic temperature fluctuations exert a critical regulatory effect on the structural properties of shrimp myofibrillar protein (MP) and emulsion stability, while the potential of amino acids as natural cryoprotectants and the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying their regulatory roles in MP structure and emulsion stability have not yet been fully elucidated. The structural alterations of MP during freeze–thaw (F-T) cycles were systematically investigated via multispectral analysis, while the interaction mechanisms between amino acids and MP were explicitly elucidated through molecular docking simulations. RESULTS Four amino acids (Arg, Gly, Lys, and Pro) significantly inhibited the transition of α-helix to disordered structures in MP secondary structure and reduced fluorophore quenching in its tertiary structure during F-T cycles. Arg and Lys exhibited superior protective effects against protein structural changes, aggregation, and oxidation. Molecular docking revealed that these amino acids mainly interacted with Glu177–Lys188, Ser245–Lys250, and Asp463–Glu468 of myosin via hydrogen bonding and ionic interactions. Additionally, these amino acids effectively prevented emulsion instability by mitigating protein oxidation and limiting excessive intermolecular interactions. CONCLUSION Arg, Gly, Lys, and Pro can interact with ions through hydrogen bonds to bind to specific sites of shrimp MP, inhibiting its structural damage and oxidative aggregation during F-T cycles, thereby enhancing the stability of the emulsion and providing theoretical support for the development of natural cryoprotectants. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

Echinochloa crus-galli var. mitis (ECM) is one of the major Echinochloa species in the rice field, with increasing reports of herbicide resistance. This study identified an ECM population (ECM_2312) exhibiting cross-resistance to four acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicides, including cyhalofop-butyl (8.7-fold), metamifop (15.8-fold), clodinafop-propargyl (16.1-fold) and fenoxaprop-P-ethyl (25.0-fold),compared with the susceptible population ECM_2201. A Cys-2088-Arg mutation was detected in ACCase2C gene copy in ECM_2312, confirming the involvement of that target-site resistance. Liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis revealed that the degradation of the herbicides active forms (cyhalofop-acid and metamifop) were faster in the resistant population than in the susceptible population. Pretreatment with the glutathione S-transferase (GST) inhibitor, 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD-Cl) reduced the resistance level from 8.7-fold to 4.9 fold for cyhalofop-butyl and from 15.8-fold to 3.0-fold for metamifop. Moreover, GST activity was consistently higher in the resistant population than the susceptible population, both in the absence and presence of herbicide treatment. Furthermore, five GST genes exhibited sustained overexpression for 96 h in the resistant plants following exposure to either cyhalofop-butyl or metamifop. This study demonstrated an ECM population possesses both a target-site mutation (Cys-2088-Arg) and GST-mediated enhanced metabolic resistance to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides.

Muscle metabolism produces creatinine, a waste product whose levels in the blood and urine are crucial markers of kidney health. Herein, a smartphone-based electrochemical detection strategy was developed to quantify creatinine in human blood serum. Since creatinine was electrochemically inactive, a standard copper solution was added as an electro-activator to produce an electrochemically active creatinine–copper complex. At a pH of 7.4, the creatinine–copper composite was oxidized in a phosphate buffer solution (PBS). Electrochemical oxidation of the free Cu+ ion in PBS is tested by the surface modification of Ti2C2Tx@poly(L-Arg) nanocomposite. The analytical performance of the developed electrochemical sensor was evaluated by differential pulse voltammetry. The developed electrochemical sensor was evaluated using a combination of techniques: electrochemical methods like cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, morphological analysis with scanning electron microscopy, and structural analysis with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Notably, the developed sensor demonstrated an impressively low detection limit of 0.05 μM and a linear range of 1–200 μM. Moreover, the sensor remarkably exhibited a stable creatinine detection response with an acceptable reproducibility for two two-week periods and demonstrated a robust immunity against interfering molecules. This is the first report on the synthesis of Ti2C2Tx@poly(L-Arg) nanocomposites and their application in the electrochemical detection of creatinine. This smartphone-based creatinine sensor offers a promising, rapid, and reliable technique for creatinine detection, with potential applications in clinical diagnostics and biomedical research, due to its high sensitivity, selectivity, and portability.

Polyethersulfone (PES) has good thermal stability, superior pH, chlorine tolerance, and excellent chemical resistance; however, the hydrophilicity and biocompatibility of PES need to be improved for its real applications. In this study, we report a surface modification method for the preparation of a functional PES membrane with hydrophilic polymer chains (MPC and GMA) via surface-initiated electrochemically-mediated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-eATRP) technology, and the Arg–Glu–Asp–Val polypeptide groups (REDV) were immobilized onto the modified membrane by a ring-opening reaction. XPS and SEM were used to analyze the chemical composition and morphology of the modified membrane surfaces, confirming that the hydrophilic polymer chains MPC and GMA and the polypeptide group REDV were successfully grafted onto the PES membrane surface. The static water contact angle decreased from 89° to 50–65°, and the hydrophilic property of the modified membrane was enhanced. The water flux increased from 4.29 L m−2 h−1 for the pristine PES membrane to 25 L m−2 h−1 for the modified membrane with PGMA chains grafted on it and REDV functional groups immobilized on it; note that the antifouling tests showed that all the modified membranes had the higher flux recovery ratio values (FRR) of above 80% than the pristine PES membrane (about 60%), and the APTT for the modified membrane increased from 46 s to 93 s, indicating that these modified membranes could be applied in the separation and blood purification fields.
