Synthesis of Ag/AgBr/Bi4O5Br2 Plasmonic Heterojunction Photocatalysts: Elevated Visible-light Photocatalytic Performance and Z-scheme Mechanism

Shanshan Ding,Mengshu Han,Yuxuan Dai,Shaogui Yang,Danjun Mao,Huan He,Cheng Sun

Graphical Next level silver : The novel plasmonic heterojunction photocatalysts of Ag/AgBr/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 layered microspheres (AAB-LMs) were successfully synthesized by the in-situ deposition and visible-light photoreduction approach. They performed elevated photocatalytic activities towards the degradation of acid orange II and aniline under visible-light irradiation than Bi-O-Br and Ag/AgBr, which was mainly credited to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag nanoparticles and the synthetic interaction among Ag, AgBr and Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 The novel photocatalysts of Ag/AgBr/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 layered microspheres (AAB-LMs) were firstly constructed via the in-situ deposition and visible-light photoreduction approach. Their compositions, structures, morphologies and optical properties were characterized by various techniques. The photocatalytic efficiencies of AAB-LMs-10 were 28 and 3.4 times higher than those of Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 -LMs towards degrading acid orange II and aniline, respectively. The superior photocatalytic behavior of AAB-LMs benefited from efficient separation and transfer of photo-generated charges, which was mainly credited to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag nanoparticles and the synthetic interaction among Ag, AgBr and Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 . O 2 − and h + were characterized as the predominant photoactive species in this AAB-LMs-photocatalysis system. Moreover, due to the presence of radical species Br 0 , which was verified by the detection of bromoaniline and dibromoaniline during the photocatalytic degradation process of aniline, Z-scheme mechanism rather than the conventional heterojunction mode was more suitable to explain the enhanced photocatalytic performance of AAB-LMs.

Dual-layer Ag/AgBr–TCN/graphene membranes for single-pass visible-light photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics in water

Xiaoqi Zhu,Xiaotie Shen,Baoliang Chen,Xiaoying Zhu

A visible-light-responsive bilayer photocatalytic membrane was constructed using 1D tubular carbon nitride and 2D graphene. • A TCN–Ag/AgBr heterojunction significantly enhanced intrinsic photocatalytic efficiency under visible light. • Graphene simultaneously enriched pollutants and acted as an electron acceptor to promote charge transfer. • Over 99% SMX removal was achieved after a single pass at a flux of 6.3 L m −2  h −1 . • The membrane exhibited stable performance over multiple cycles, showing strong potential for antibiotic removal. Photocatalytic membranes provide an effective platform for the direct removal of water contaminants. However, most photocatalytic membranes are constructed by simply integrating catalysts with membrane materials, without fully exploiting the retention capability of membranes. Meanwhile, inefficient photogenerated carrier dynamics limit the coupling between photocatalytic reaction kinetics and flow-through mass transfer during filtration, hindering the single-pass removal of recalcitrant pollutants such as antibiotics. Herein, a dual-layer photocatalytic membrane was designed to fully leverage the synergistic roles of photocatalysis and membrane separation by utilizing the efficient light harvesting of the upper layer, the pollutant retention and enrichment capability of the lower layer, and the effective electron separation and transfer properties of the photocatalytic and membrane materials. The membrane was rationally constructed via sequential assembly of Ag/AgBr-modified one-dimensional tubular carbon nitride (TCN) onto a multilayered graphene membrane, forming an integrated Ag/AgBr-TCN-GO heterostructure. Under a flux of 6.3 L m −2  h −1 the prepared membrane achieved over 99% removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in a single filtration pass, while its SMX removal capacity per unit time and unit membrane area was 32.64% higher than that of previously reported membranes evaluated under visible light based on the normalized areal removal metric defined in this work. The membrane also exhibited promising removal performance toward other representative contaminants such as tetracycline and bisphenol A. Mechanistically, the TCN-Ag/AgBr promoted efficient electron generation and directional charge transfer, while the graphene oxide layer facilitated electron transport and suppressed recombination. Meanwhile, filtration-induced pollutant retention enriched contaminants on the membrane surface, enabling more efficient utilization of photogenerated electrons. This work establishes an effective strategy for coordinating charge-carrier dynamics with pollutant transport during filtration, enabling single-pass photocatalytic water treatment. Ultrasensitive SERS-Based Immunoassay of Tumor Marker in Serum Using Au–Ag Alloy Nanoparticles and Ag/AgBr Hybrid Nanostructure

Yongfeng Gao,Yuanhui Feng,Lu Zhou,Lucia Petti,Zhe Wang,Jun Zhou,Shusen Xie,Jian Chen,Yanping Qing

Ultrasensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is critical for the early diagnosis of liver cancer. In this work, a novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based immunoassay complex has been successfully developed for the detection of AFP by using the Au-Ag alloy nanoparticals and the Ag/AgBr hybrid nanostructure. As the typical bimetal or metal/semiconductor plasmonic materials, besides the strong SERS enhancement characteristics, the Au-Ag alloy nanoparticals exhibit excellent monodispersity and the Ag/AgBr hybrid nanostructure demonstrates good stability. The experimental results show that the SERS-based immunoassay of AFP presents a low limit of detection of 1.86 fg/mL and a broad dynamic range from 2 fg/mL to 0.8 μ g/mL. Furthermore, the clinical applicability of the proposed SERS-based immunoassay has been assessed by the detection of AFP in the human serum samples of cancer patient and healthy person. The test data are consistent well with that of chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) in the relative errors of − 8.82–8.06% and show better detection sensitivity. It reveals that the proposed immunoassay protocol is significant for giving insight into the design of ultrasensitive biosensor and the point-of-care testing of cancers.

Single-crystalline AgIn(MoO4)2 nanosheets grafted Ag/AgBr composites with enhanced plasmonic photocatalytic activity for degradation of tetracycline under visible light

Xu Yan,Xiyou Wang,Wei Gu,MiaoMiao Wu,Yan Yan,Bo Hu,Guangbo Che,Donglai Han,Jinghai Yang,Weiqiang Fan,Weidong Shi

Single-crystalline AgIn(MoO 4 ) 2 nanosheets have been successfully fabricated by facile hydrothermal method without any surfactants. Subsequently, Ag/AgBr-grafted AgIn(MoO 4 ) 2 nanosheets were synthesized by the in situ photoreduction of AgBr/AgIn(MoO 4 ) 2 composites prepared by a deposition–precipitation method. Under visible light irradiation. The Ag/AgBr/AgIn(MoO 4 ) 2 composites exhibit a strong absorbance in the visible region because of the surface plasmon resonance absorption of Ag nanocrystals. Compared with bare AgIn(MoO 4 ) 2 nanosheets, Ag/AgBr nanoparticles and Ag/AgIn(MoO 4 ) 2 composites, a dramatic enhancement in the degradation rate of tetracycline (TC) is observed over the Ag/AgBr/AgIn(MoO 4 ) 2 composites. The immense enhancement of the photocatalytic activity is attributed to the extended absorption in the visible-light region, effective charge separation, and synergistic enhancement induced by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the heterostructured Ag/AgBr/AgIn(MoO 4 ) 2 . This study provides new insight into the fabrication of highly efficient and stable ternary metal molybdate based plasmonic photocatalysts and facilitates their practical application to solve environmental issues. The mechanism for the photodegradation of TC over Ag/AgBr/AgIn(MoO 4 ) 2 is discussed in detail.

A label-free photoelectrochemical immunosensor for prostate specific antigen detection based on Ag2S sensitized Ag/AgBr/BiOBr heterojunction by in-situ growth method

Qiying Zhu,Canguo Li,Huiqin Chang,Meng Jiang,Xiaokai Sun,Wei Jing,Haowei Huang,Di Huang,Ling Kong,Zhiwei Chen,Feng Sang,Xiuzhen Zhang

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, and its early detection is vital to saving the lives of patients. In this research, a novel label-free photoelectrochemical immunosensor was designed for sensitive detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA). Ag 2 S sensitized on Ag/AgBr/BiOBr heterojunction could effectively inhibit photogenic holes recombination and improve photocurrent response and sensitivity. Ascorbic acid was an effective electron donor, which can effectively eliminate photo-generated holes. The photocurrent reduced linearly with the logarithm of PSA concentration ranged from 0.001 to 50 ng·mL −1 and the limit of detection was 0.25 pg·mL −1 . The designed sensor had the advantages of wide linear range, good stability, high reproducibility, and good selectivity. This study not only provided a method for efficient and sensitive detection of PSA, but also provided valuable reference ideas for the detection of other tumor markers.

Construction of Z-scheme and p-n heterostructure: Three-dimensional porous g-C3N4/graphene oxide-Ag/AgBr composite for high-efficient hydrogen evolution

Wei Li,Xiao Wang,Min Li,Shu-ao He,Qiong Ma,Xuechuan Wang

Hydrogen is known as an alternative new energy for its advantages of non-pollution and high calorific value, and photocatalysis technology is regarded as one of the most effective means to produce hydrogen in recent years. In this topic, aiming at the poor photoresponse, fast combination of photo-induced carriers and unstable structure of traditional photocatalysts, the three-dimensional porous g-C 3 N 4 /graphene oxide framework was constructed by compounding two-dimensional graphene oxide and two-dimensional g-C 3 N 4 via hard template (SiO 2 nanoparticles) method and selective chemical etching. Then, silver bromide nanoparticles , a superior photosensitizer, were immobilized on the three-dimensional porous framework to construct the three-dimensional porous g-C 3 N 4 /graphene oxide-AgBr photocatalyst with Ag plasmas by solvothermal method. Research showed that this novel photocatalyst based on Z-scheme heterostructure (GO-AgBr), p-n heterostructure (g-C 3 N 4 -AgBr) and Ag plasmas presented high-efficient visible-light driven hydrogen evolution (3.69 mmol/g/h) at the absence of Pt co-catalyst, which is higher than the majority of existing catalysts, and it also possessed strong stability on its activity and structure. Accordingly, the enhanced hydrogen evolution and photostability were attributed to the highly ordered structure and fast interfacial electron conduction of three-dimensional porous framework, superior photosensitivity of AgBr and synergistic effect of Ag plasmas. Therefore, this study provided a potential method for exploitation of hydrogen energy.

Highly efficient Z-scheme structured visible-light photocatalyst constructed by selective doping of Ag@AgBr and Co3O4 separately on {010} and {110} facets of BiVO4: Pre-separation channel and hole-sink effects

Fangfei Chen,Chaoyue Wu,Jinnan Wang,Corvini Philippe François-Xavier,Thomas Wintgens

To improve the visible-light photocatalytic activity and photo-carriers separation of BiVO 4 , highly efficient Z-scheme structured visible-light photocatalyst Ag@AgBr/BiVO 4 /Co 3 O 4 was constructed by selective doping of Ag@AgBr and Co 3 O 4 on {010} and {110} facets of BiVO 4 . Due to the different energy levels of conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB) between {010} facet and {110} facet, BiVO 4 could act as the ‘pre-separation channel’ to achieve spatial charge separation. Such pre-separation channel effect improved photo-electrons transfer from BiVO 4 {010} facets to electron mediator (Ag°) for subsequent recombination with holes of AgBr. Thus, the photo-induced electrons of AgBr could be accumulated on CB for reduction of O 2 to O 2 − . On the other hand, holes of BiVO 4 accumulated on {110} facets were captured by deriving-hole-type co-catalysts Co 3 O 4 for organics oxidation. In addition, Ag° not only served as the electron mediator of Z-scheme but also improve the visible-light utilization due to SPR-effect. Being attributed to the synergistic effect of pre-separation channel and deriving-hole-type co-catalysts, Z-scheme structured Ag@AgBr/BiVO 4 /Co 3 O 4 (0.15 wt%) achieved high photodegradation rate of organics. Even after 9th cycles, Ag@AgBr/BiVO 4 /Co 3 O 4 (0.15 wt%) could still photodegraded more than 90% of OTC within 24 min. DRS, PL and photoelectrochemical analyses also confirmed the improvement of visible-light utilization and charge separation of Ag@AgBr/BiVO 4 /Co 3 O 4 . The radical trapping experiments and EPR demonstrated that both superoxide radical ( O 2 − ) and holes (h + ) were main active species for organics photodegradation. In summary, this work not only constructed a highly efficient Z-scheme structured visible-light photocatalyst, but also provided a new method to diminish the photo-carriers recombination by pre-separation channel and hole-sink effects.

The role of reduction extent of graphene oxide in the photocatalytic performance of Ag/AgX (X = Cl, Br)/rGO composites and the pseudo-second-order kinetics reaction nature of the Ag/AgBr system

Weiyin Gao,Chenxin Ran,Minqiang Wang,Le Li,Zhongwang Sun,Xi Yao

Although reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based photocatalyst composites have been intensively developed during the past few years, the influence of reduction extent of rGO on the photocatalytic performance of the rGO-based composite has virtually not been investigated due to some technical limitations, such as the poor water dispersibility of rGO and low reduction selectivity of the hydrothermal method, which make it difficult to control the reduction extent of rGO in these composites. Herein, we used a facile room-temperature method to synthesize Ag/AgX (X = Cl, Br)/rGO photocatalyst composites as a model to study the effect of reduction extent of rGO on the photocatalytic performance of the photocatalyst. It was found that the photocatalytic activities of both Ag/AgCl/PrGO and Ag/AgBr/PrGO systems had an optimized threshold of the reduction extent of photoreduced GO (PrGO). More importantly, due to the different conductive band values of AgCl and AgBr, the optimized thresholds in the two systems were at different PrGO reduction extents, based on which we proposed that the favorable energy band matching between AgX and PrGO in the two systems played a crucial role in obtaining high photocatalysis performance. Besides, the photocatalytic reaction of the Ag/AgBr based system was confirmed to be a pseudo-second-order kinetics reaction rather than pseudo-first-order kinetics reaction. The new insights presented in this work provided useful information on the design and development of a more sophisticated photocatalyst, and can also be applied to many other applications.
