The simultaneous removal of anionic and cationic heavy metals presents a challenge for adsorbents. In this study, acetate (Ac-) was utilized as the intercalating anion for layered double hydroxide (LDH) to prepare a novel biochar composite adsorbent (Ac-LB) designed for the adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II), and As(V). By utilizing Ac- as the intercalating anion, the interlayer space of the LDH was enlarged from 0.803 nm to 0.869 nm, exposing more adsorption sites for the LDH and enhancing the affinity for heavy metals. The results of the adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption effect of Ac-LB on heavy metals was significantly improved compared to the original FeMg-LDH modified biochar composites (LB), and the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II), Cu(II), and As(V) were 402.70, 68.50, and 21.68 mg/g, respectively. Wastewater simulation tests further confirmed the promising application of Ac-LB for heavy metal adsorption. The analysis of the adsorption mechanism revealed that surface complexation, electrostatic adsorption, and chemical deposition were the main mechanisms of action between heavy metals (Pb(II) and Cu(II)) and Ac-LB. Additionally, Cu(II) ions underwent a homogeneous substitution reaction with Ac-LB. The adsorption process of As(V) by Ac-LB mainly relied on complexation and ion-exchange reactions. Lastly, the modification of the LDH structure by Ac − as an intercalating anion, thereby increasing the affinity for heavy metals, was further illustrated using density-functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Herein, we synthesize the ZnAl-LDHs/NH 2 -MIL-125 composite via in situ growth of Ti-based metal–organic framework (MOFs) using layered double hydroxide (LDHs) as a carrier. The composite exhibits excellent performance for As(V) removal, achieving an adsorption capacity of 1634.0 mg/g in wastewater with an As(V) concentration of 1500 mg/L at pH of 10. The porous flower-like structure of the composite inherits the benefits of both the spatial structure of MOFs and the arsenic-affinity of LDHs. This results in an abundant active surface containing –OH, –NH 2 , M–O–M, and –COO– species, collectively contributing to As(V) adsorption. The adsorption progress governing As(V) removal follows the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic models, revealing a monolayer and chemisorption mechanism. This study showcases the feasibility of the in situ growth of a MOF on LDHs to synthesize high-capacity adsorbents, offering a potential solution for As(V) removal from wastewater.

The increased discharge of organoarsenic to natural waters, brings significant risks to ecosystems and human health. It is curial to rapidly transform organoarsenic to harmless arsenate (As(V)) before conventional coagulation-sedimentation treatment. In this study, the roxarsone (ROX) was destroyed to form As(V) with almost 100 % transformation rate and reaction rate of 0.43 min −1 via the CoFe 2 O 4 /peracetic acid (PAA) system. Specifically, PAA was primarily activated to form singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and organic radicals (R-O·) by Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycle existed on the CoFe 2 O 4 surface, the presence of iron (Fe) in the CoFe 2 O 4 facilitated the transformation of Co(III) to Co(II), and then that reactive oxygen species (ROS) was employed to mineralize ROX. The presence of common anions, and natural organic matters (NOM) hardly inhibit the degradation of ROX. Furthermore, the catalytic efficiency of CoFe 2 O 4 /PAA system remained above 94 % after five cycles. These findings suggest that the CoFe 2 O 4 /PAA system is a promising technique for enhanced arsenic decontamination.

Arsenic contamination in water poses a severe threat to the environment and human health. Developing a green, low-cost, and highly efficient adsorbent for As(III)/As( V ) removal remains a great challenge. In this work, titanate nanotube-encapsulated nZVI (Fe@TNTs) and surface-supported nZVI (Fe/TNTs) were prepared. The confinement effect on arsenic adsorption was systematically investigated. A series of characterizations (TEM, XRD, XPS, etc.) and analyses (batch experiments, MD/DFT calculations) were conducted. Fe@TNTs exhibit superior adsorption capacities versus Fe/TNTs, along with excellent coexisting ion tolerance (excluding PO 4 3− ) and cyclic stability. As(III) is adsorbed via monolayer chemisorption, whereas As( V ) adsorption exhibits a heterogeneous surface adsorption behavior. MD simulations confirm confinement-induced arsenic enrichment in Fe@TNTs, and DFT calculations verify its lower arsenic adsorption energies. These advantages stem from confinement effect, which induces arsenic enrichment and promotes complexation, oxidation, and electrostatic interactions. This study provides a novel confinement engineering strategy for high-performance adsorbents, with great application potential in the treatment of arsenic-contaminated wastewater.

Sulfide induces the reductive dissolution of iron (oxyhydr) oxides, the primary host phases for arsenic (As), thereby triggering As release. We investigates the physicochemical mechanisms of three types of low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) on sulfide-mediated reductive dissolution of As(V)-ferrihydrite and As release using batch experiments combined with hydro-chemical, spectroscopic, and microscopic analyses. Arsenate dominated the aqueous (97.2–100 %) and solid phases throughout the experiment. LMWOAs accelerated S(-II) consumption and As release by inhibiting FeS formation, with rates ordered as citric acid (CA) > oxalic acid (OA) > malic acid (MA) > control (Kb). At S(-II): Fe = 0.5, maximum As release was 11.78 % (Kb) and 14.60 % (CA); at S(-II): Fe = 1, it was 27.58 % (Kb) and 30.71 % (OA). LMWOAs enhanced As release via non-reductive ligand dissolution of As(V)-ferrihydrite. Secondary mineral formation in later stages re-immobilized As, with mineral layers ≥50 nm thick. LMWOAs interacted differently with secondary minerals: CA primarily adsorbed on surfaces, while MA integrated into the matrix. LMWOAs influenced As redistribution in secondary minerals, increasing contamination risks. Thus, the complex effects of organic matter (OM) on Fe, S, and As biogeochemistry must be considered in risk assessments and remediation strategies for As-contaminated sites in sulfidic environments.

In the past few decades, heavy metal pollution, such as As(V), has become an important issue for aqueous environment safety. For reasons of practical feasibility and cost-effectiveness, adsorption has been widely used in the water treatment and reuse community, with rapid development of adsorbents. However, the precise control of the electronic configuration of the adsorbents' sites to enhance adsorption performance is largely unexplored. In this study, to demonstrate the effect of electronic configuration on adsorption performance, we synthesized granular activated carbon (GAC) supported Fe-based hydroxides adsorbents by varying the valence state in transition metals. Furthermore, the adsorbents are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to identify surface structure and morphological properties. Adsorptive performance studies show that the adsorption capacity and arsenic removal efficiency of Fe(II)-GAC are twice those of Fe(III)-GAC, as a matter of charge transfer between adsorbents and cationic pollution (such as Fe-O and As species). Finally, PO 4 3− was selected as a control sample to confirm the rationality of the removal mechanism. Collectively, fine-tuning of the electronic configuration from charge transfer will not only benefit heavy metal removal channels, but also supply fundamental information for adsorbents design for organics removal.

Groundwater contaminated by arsenic endangers our health. Therefore, in this work, a novel composite adsorbent consisting of magnetic chitosan (MCS), zinc oxide (ZnO), and sodium alginate (Alg) was prepared to remove arsenic from groundwater. First, chitosan was coated on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles by coprecipitation. Then, MCS/ZnO@Alg gel beads were fabricated by combining MCS with ZnO and Alg , and crosslinking the composite material in the presence of Ca 2+ ions. The MCS/ZnO@Alg beads were characterized by SEM, FTIR spectroscopy , XRD, VSM, and XPS . The adsorption experiments revealed that the MCS/ZnO@Alg magnetic gel beads have high stability and As(V) adsorption capability, and adsorbed As(V) through chemical adsorption. The maximum As(V) adsorption capacity as determined from the Langmuir model was 63.69 mg/g. In addition, MCS/ZnO@Alg exhibited good recyclability and high sustainability. This work proves that the MCS/ZnO@Alg gel beads are an ideal candidate for addressing the grievous environmental threats caused by water pollution.

The fate of arsenic in the water environment is of great concern. Here, the influences of oxalic acid and UV light illumination on the dissolution of naked ferrihydrite (Fhy), Fhy loaded with As(V) [Fhy*-As(V)], as well as the fate of As(V) at pH 3.0 were studied. With the assistance of oxalic acid, complexes of Fe(III)-oxalic acid produced on Fhy/Fhy*-As(V) were reduced to Fe(II)-oxalic acid by photo-induced electrons under UV light irradiation. UV light has nearly no impact on the release of As(V) in the system of Fhy*-As(V) without the assistance of oxalic acid. Nevertheless, in the existence of oxalic acid, UV light illumination resulted in the contents of liberated As(V) decreased by 775–1300% compared to that without light. Considering the coexistence of As(V), oxalic acid as well as iron oxides in aquatic environments, the present study revealed that UV illumination could enhance the retention of As(V) on Fhy in the acidic water environment containing oxalic acid. Keywords:ferrihydrite; As(V);photodissolution;oxalic acid;fate

The environmental impact of arsenic (As) pollution has been a focal point within environmental science. In arsenic-polluted saline-alkali environment, the addition of exogenous biochar can affect the morphological transformation of As both through direct and indirect mechanisms, with calcium ions (Ca(II)) playing a crucial role. This study investigates the immobilization mechanisms of undissolved biochar (UOB) and dissolved biochar (DOB) on As(V) in the absence and presence of Ca(II) under alkaline conditions and aerobic atmosphere. While UOB and DOB alone are insufficient for As(V) immobilization, their combined action in the presence of Ca(II) achieves remarkable immobilization rates of 91.9% and 98.1%, respectively. Precipitation of calcium arsenate is identified as the primary immobilization pathway in both the UOB-Ca(II)-As(V) and DOB-Ca(II)-As(V) systems. Furthermore, Ca(II) acts as a mediator for As(V) immobilization through the formation of ternary UOB/DOB-Ca-As complexes, which are corroborated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) analysis from a microscopic perspective. Notably, the synergistic immobilization of As by DOB and newly generated CaCO 3 in DOB-Ca(II)-As(V) system is highlighted. Additionally, the increase in Ca(II) concentration (0–100 mM) and solution pH (9.0–12.0) both significantly enhance the immobilization of As(V). An increase in the dosage of UOB (0.4–4 g/L) reduces the immobilization of As(V), while effect of the DOB concentration is insignificant. This study provides new insights into how the release of two biochar fractions into a typical Ca(II)-rich saline-alkali environment may alter the fate and transport of As species.

A series of novel adsorption resins were synthesized via the chloromethylation of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin and subsequent functional group conversion reaction. Their chemical structure, thermal stability, and morphology were systematically characterized by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectrometer, respectively. The experimental results showed that the thioureido, mercapto, aminopyridine, and quaternary ammonium groups had been respectively introduced into PPS matrix, the functional group content of PPS-based mercapto resin (HS-PPS), aminopyridine resin (AP-PPS), and quaternary ammonium resin (QA-PPS) were about 2.20, 1.71, and 2.61 mmol g −1 , respectively. The adsorptive performance for Hg (II) and As (V) were studied by batch adsorptive method; the adsorption capacities of the HS-PPS and AP-PPS resin for Hg (II) were 210.65 and 169.06 mg g −1 . The adsorption capacity of the QA-PPS resin was 88 mg g −1 for As (V). Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A zero-valent iron-loaded corn straw char (ZVI-CSC) was synthesized in this study for the remediation of As(V) and Cd(II) contamination. The impact of ZVI-CSC on the adsorption performance of As(V) and Cd(II) in solution, as well as their migration properties in soil, was investigated through adsorption kinetics and soil column leaching experiments, respectively. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of As(V) by ZVI-CSC was significantly improved to 14.42 g·kg −1 at pH = 3, compared with unmodified corn straw char (CSC). However, the adsorption capacity of Cd(II) was not improved. In the leaching experiments, the addition of ZVI-CSC to As(V)-contaminated soil resulted in a significant reduction of cumulative As(V) release rate from 32.26 to 3.11%, compared with corn straw char (CSC). Moreover, the role of ZVI in As(V)/Cd(II) remediation was analyzed. nZVI forms ≡Fe-OH and ≡Fe-OOH due to oxidation, which can form monodentate and bidentate complexes with As(V) via ligand exchange, thus promoting As immobilization. Furthermore, to further improve the adsorption performance of Cd(II), the electrostatic potential (ESP) of biochars with different surface functional groups (C = O, C–O–C, –OH, and –COOH) and their bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) with As(V) and Cd(II) were calculated based on density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that –OH was the most effective for As(V) adsorption, and C–O–C was the most effective for Cd(II) adsorption. C = O and –COOH can be used to the simultaneous adsorption of As(V) and Cd(II). Therefore, the surface functional groups of ZVI-CSC can be selectively modified to improve its adsorption performance of As(V) and Cd(II). Graphical

Core Ideas Adsorption and desorption kinetics of As(V) on Fe and Mn oxide mixture was studied. A predictive kinetics model based on component additivity approach was developed. The kinetics model predicted the kinetic data of As(V) well for the mixed oxides. Ferrihydrite and δ-MnO2 controlled As(V) reaction kinetics differently. Arsenate [As(V)] soil contamination is a great concern worldwide because of its high toxicity, carcinogenicity, and mobility. The adsorption of As(V) on soil minerals such as ferrihydrite and δ-MnO 2 controls the transport and bioavailability of As(V) in the soil environment. A large number of studies have investigated the equilibrium and mechanisms of As(V) adsorption onto ferrihydrite and δ-MnO 2 individually. However, both ferrihydrite and δ-MnO 2 , commonly coexisting within soils has been overlooked and little information is available for the kinetics of As(V) adsorption and desorption in this mixed mineral system. Therefore, in this work, kinetics of As(V) adsorption and desorption onto ferrihydrite and δ-MnO 2 mixed minerals is studied using the stirred-flow method. A kinetics model for the mixed mineral system was developed using the component additivity approach, which incorporated the nonlinear binding of As(V) to both ferrihydrite and δ-MnO 2 simultaneously. The kinetics model successfully predicted the kinetics of As(V) adsorption and desorption in the mixed mineral system under varying solution chemistry conditions and properly accounted for the heterogeneity of the binding sites of both ferrihydrite and δ-MnO 2 . For As(V) adsorption kinetics, the ferrihydrite bidentate non-protonated sites (Fh-bi-np) played a dominant role, followed by the δ-MnO 2 binding sites and the ferrihydrite bidentate protonated sites (Fh-bi-p). After the 4-h desorption, As(V) was mainly retained on ferrihydrite binding sites. This study helps to quantitatively elucidate the kinetic behavior and mechanisms of As(V) in the Fe oxide and Mn oxide systems, thus enhancing our understanding of the fate and transport of As in soil environments.
