Development of Au–Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC as a self-supported electrochemical sensor for in situ monitoring of cellular hydrogen peroxide

Jilin Zheng,Peng Zhao,Shiying Zhou,Sha Chen,Yi Liang,Fengchun Tian,Jun Zhou,Danqun Huo,Changjun Hou

Integrating metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) of different components or structures together and exploiting them as electrochemical sensors for electrochemical sensing has aroused great interest. Furthermore, the incorporation of noble metals with MOFs is conducive to the improvement of catalytic performance. In this work, Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L nanomaterials were successfully synthesised onto a self-supported flexible carbon cloth (Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC) through a novel strategy called MOF-on-MOF. Then, Au nanoparticles were electrodeposited onto Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC to obtain Au–Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC, which can serve as an excellent electrocatalyst for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The obtained flower-like Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC hybrid MOF changes the structure of the monomeric MOF alone and adds more attachment sites. The synergy of the bimetals greatly improved the catalytic performance of the as-developed sensor. Electrochemical experiment results show that the proposed sensor based on Au–Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC has an extended linear range from 1 μM to 19.6 mM with a sensitivity of 390 μA mM−1 cm−2, and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 21.2 nM (S/N = 3). Moreover, it has good anti-interference, reproducibility, repeatability and excellent stability. Furthermore, the real-time in situ detection of H2O2 secreted from human adenocarcinomic alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549 cells) was achieved by culturing cells on Au–Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC, which indicates the potential of the sensor for applications in cancer pathology. Both the synthesis strategy and the sensor design provide new methods and ideas for the production of ultrasensitive H2O2 electrochemical sensors.

Trimetallic Au@Pd@Pt nanozyme-enhanced lateral flow immunoassay for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein

Yue Sun,Zihao Xie,Fubin Pei,Wei Hu,Shasha Feng,Qingli Hao,Bing Liu,Xihui Mu,Wu Lei,Zhaoyang Tong

The rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) seriously threatened global public health. Establishing a rapid and sensitive diagnostic test for early detection of the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein is urgently required to defend against the pandemic. Herein, an enhanced lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) was fabricated by trimetallic Au@Pd@Pt core–shell nanozymes for detection of the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein. The Au@Pd@Pt nanozymes (Au@Pd@Pt NZs) synthesized via a one-pot method, with a dendrite morphology and uniform particle size, showed excellent peroxidase-like activity. Due to the perfect enzyme-like catalytic activity toward 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), the catalytic signal could be generated even by a tiny amount of Au@Pd@Pt NZs accumulated on the test strip. Therefore, rapid detection with higher sensitivity was achieved. The Au@Pd@Pt NZs-based LFIA provided a quantitative range of 0.05–100 ng mL−1 with a limit of detection of 0.037 ng mL−1, which was 17-fold lower than the LFIA without enhancement. The average recoveries from spiked samples were in the range of 92.5–107.9% with relative standard deviations all less than 4%, indicating the reliability and repeatability of the proposed LFIA. Additionally, the proposed LFIA could report results within 30 min using a microplate reader. In conclusion, the Au@Pd@Pt NZs-LFIA is a rapid, simple, and sensitive method for detecting the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein.

Highly sensitive immunosensor for Hepatitis B surface antigen detection based on a novel signal amplification system of gold nanorods and mesoporous Au@Pd@Pt core-shell nanospheres

Mingdang Li,Ping Wang,Fubin Pei,Haoxuan Yu,Peng Chen,Yunhui Dong,Yueyun Li,Qing Liu,Degang Li

In this work, a highly sensitive sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor was fabricated by using the gold nanorods (Au NRs) as the substrate material and the mesoporous Au@Pd@Pt core-shell nanospheres (m-Au@Pd@Pt) as the label of the detection antibodies (Ab 2 , Ab 2 label) for detecting Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs Ag). The Au NRs with excellent conductivity and biocompatibility can accelerate the electron transfer on the electrode interface and enhance the load capacity of capture antibodies (Ab 1 ). The m-Au@Pd@Pt with mesoporous structure can not only provide high specific surface area and abundant catalytically active sites, but also offer great pore accessibility of guest species from outside. The detection signal of the immunosensor was effectively improved by the novel Ab 2 label. With the good cooperation between Au NRs and Ab 2 label, a linear relationship between current signal and the logarithm of the HBs Ag concentration was obtained in the wide range of 20   fg/mL to 200   ng/mL and the detection limit of HBs Ag was 6.7   fg/mL (signal-to-noise ratio of 3). Besides, the designed immunosensor shows good reproducibility, long-term stability and high specificity. Crucially, the sensitive and selective response to HBs Ag in real human serum samples confirms that the designed immunosensor will be promising in the clinical diagnosis of biomarkers.

Frustrated Lewis pairs engineering on CeO2 to boost BHMF oxidation activity of AuPd for efficient production of FDCA

Yanan Wei,Tao Xia,Tongyu Zhong,Henghui Zhu,Yucai He,Yunlei Zhang

Interface engineering is a significance strategy to afford efficient selective oxidation for supported catalysts. Herein, constructing of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) sites on CeO 2 and supporting Au-Pd nanoparticles to provide a highly selective production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF). Mechanism investigations illustrate that the FLPs active sites enhance the adsorption and activation of catalyst for BHMF, decreasing the activation energy of rate-determining step. Simultaneously, the FLPs sites induce the electron transfer of the catalyst, generating a novel Au-Pd-CeO 2 interface that promotes the adsorption of molecule oxygen and the formation of the superoxide radical. Thereby, the Au x Pd y /P T -CeO 2 catalysts enable superior catalytic performance, achieving a satisfactory turnover frequency of 55.29 h −1 and a highly FDCA yield of 94.0 %. Such interfacial FLPs sites exhibit the great potentials for the selective oxidation of various unsaturated compounds.

Probing the Synergistic Effects of Au, Pd and CeO2 Facilitating the Au-Pd/CeO2-Catalyzed Selective Oxidation of 1,2-Propanediol to Lactic Acid

Liu Yubing,Tang Jie,Cai Chenyu,Gu Runjing,Yang Xinyu,Yue Liang,Bai Yiqiang,Zhang Fengxiao,Liang Jing,Xu Naizhang,Fan Yining

CeO 2 -supported Au and Pd nanocatalyst (Au-Pd/CeO 2 ) was developed and used in the oxidation of 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). Notably, by tuning catalyst composition and reaction conditions, the product selectivity could be well controlled to produce lactic acid (LA) majorly, which was one of the top twelve bio-based platform molecules with very broad application scopes. The catalyst with Pd/(Au + Pd) molar ratio at 0.25 should be the preferable catalyst was screened out to be preferable, affording LA in 92.0% selectivity, while 88.0% of 1,2-PDO was converted under mild reaction conditions (0.3 MPa of O 2 at 80 °C for 3 h). The superior catalytic activities of Au-Pd/CeO 2 probably attributed to the strong interactions between Au and Pd nano particles (NPs), as being reflected by High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) characterizations. Moreover, strong interactions between Au and Pd NPs making it easy to generate active oxygen species. Superoxide radicals can oxide the first hydroxyl group of 1,2-PDO to carboxyl group, while H 2 O 2 can easy caused C-C bond breaks and generate unwanted by-products. Plasmon-enhanced electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation over Au@Pd nanostars

Xin Wu,Chunzhi Cui,Xingzhong Zhu,Caixia Kan

Hybrid noble-metal nanostructures , which integrate plasmonic characteristics and electrocatalytic performance, have garnered significant interest recently. In this study, Au@Pd nanostars were synthesized and employed as an advanced electrocatalyst for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), which suffers from the kinetic limitations of the anodic half-reaction of direct ethanol fuel cells. Leveraging the superior surface plasmon resonance (SPR) property of Au nanostars, the synthesized Au@Pd nanostars exhibited superior plasmon-enhanced EOR activity of 4191.63 A g −1 under laser illumination , noting a 9.40-fold increase compared to dark conditions (445.99 A g −1 ). The influences of Pd loading and laser power on EOR activity were explored. The impact of Pd loading on EOR activity demonstrates a volcano-shaped correlation, where optimal Pd coverage enhances catalysis but excessive amounts dampen SPR performance, crucial for maximizing EOR activity. Within a specified range, EOR activity linearly increases with laser power due to its influence on SPR performance. Mechanistic investigation suggests the critical roles of photothermal effect and hot carriers’ separation in boosting EOR kinetics. The repeated experiments show little difference, ensuring the accuracy and reproducibility of the reported activity of Au@Pd nanostars for EOR. During the long-term stability estimation, the Au@Pd nanostars display the best durability over three electrocatalysts. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of plasmon-enhanced catalysis in advancing the performance of electrocatalysts for EOR and other conventional electrocatalytic reactions.

Optimized Design and Development of AuPd Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation of Cyclopentadiene

Ding Mingliang,Zheng Yanxia,Zhao Xuanjiao,Cai Lu,Yang Yubo,Wang Qian,Li Yuchao,Wang Ming,Xu Rui,Zuo Cuncun,Huang Haofei,Cui Guangjun,Zhao Yansong

Al 2 O 3 -supported Au-Pd bimetallic catalysts were synthesized using the sol immobilization method for the selective hydrogenation of cyclopentadiene (CPD). The study explored the effect of varying Au-Pd metal ratios on the catalytic activity during the hydrogenation process. Comparative analysis of the catalytic performance revealed that the Au-Pd metal ratio significantly influences the hydrogenation efficiency of CPD. The catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), CO-diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). TEM results confirmed the successful synthesis of the bimetallic catalysts with an average particle size of 4.7 nm. Line scan and XPS analyses verified the presence of an Au-Pd alloy in the catalyst. Among the catalysts tested, the Au 0.25 Pd 0.75 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic performance. This enhanced activity is attributed to the electronic interaction between the Au and Pd nanoparticles, likely due to electron migration, which boosts catalytic activity. The kinetic study of the Au 0.25 Pd 0.75 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst showed an activation energy of 26.98 kJ/mol.

Urchin-like Au/Pd Nanobranches for the Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Qiuxiang Wang,Junlin Cai,Yu Sun,Weizhen Chen,Hongpu Huang,Shupeng Wang,Luhong Fu,Shuifen Xie

Three-dimensional (3D) porous heterogeneous metallic nanomaterials hold remarkable competitiveness in electrocatalytic fields due to their flexible porous structure and the electronic effect between heteroatoms, but challenges in synthesis still remain. Here, we design a facile stepwise reduction method to successfully synthesize urchin-like Au/Pd nanobranches (NBs). In a one-pot synthesis, small Au nanoparticles were initially generated. Later, numerous Pd nanotwigs were epitaxially grown and interlaced on the Au seeds to create unique channels, forming an Au-core/Pd-branches structure eventually. The as-prepared Au/Pd NBs exhibit greatly improved activity and stability for alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis compared to the commercial Pt/C, with mass activity (1.4 A mg–1) and specific activity (2.4 mA cm–2) increased by 8.8 and 8.9 times, respectively. The excellent ORR performances of Au/Pd NBs are mainly attributed to the optimized electronic structure, improved utilization of surface active sites, and accelerated mass and charge transfer, which derives from the strong ligand effect, as well as the abundant porous channels of the Au/Pd NBs structure. The controllable design and synthesis of 3D porous Pd-based nanomaterials sheds light on a gigantic potential for ORR electrocatalysis.

Dynamic Monitoring of the Structural Evolution of Au@Pd under Electrochemistry

Xiaoyu Zhao,Wei Ran,Zixuan Wang,Jiefang Sun,Rui Liu,Jingfu Liu

Core–shell nanocatalysts have shown superior catalytic activity than monometallic catalysts. However, these metastable materials are susceptible to structural changes during catalysis. Comprehending the evolution of surface sites and their stability under different reaction conditions is crucial for designing durable and highly active core–shell nanocatalysts. Herein, structural transformation of the atomic layer thickness of Pd shells on Au nanocubes in different electrolytes at various electrochemical windows was investigated by a combination of cyclic voltammetry (CV), surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of adsorbed probe molecules, and elemental analysis. Pd sites are stable under basic and neutral conditions but experience severe structure evolution under acidic conditions. Pd atoms that are directly coordinated by Au atoms, upon oxidation at evaluated potential, transform into Pd ions via the reaction with H+ which would also be adsorbed on the Au sites. These Pd ions are easily coreduced with the formed Au ions into surface alloys in the backward CV scan. In contrast, Pd atoms in the thick Pd overlayer (>1 monolayer) are likely to dissolute into the electrolyte solution and leach. SERS revealed that the change of Pd sites primarily occurred at contiguous Pd sites and isolated Pd sites were relatively stable. This evolution mechanism provides new insight into the rational design of efficient and stable catalysts and is expected to promote further application of core–shell nanocatalysts.

Controlling Au–Pd Surface on Au Nanocubes for Selective Catalytic Alkyne Semihydrogenation

Yaping Li,Qiaoxi Liu,Jianbo Jin,Wei Ye,Canyu Hu,Shanwei Hu,Zeming Qi,Ran Long,Li Song,Junfa Zhu,Yujie Xiong

The heterogeneous nanocatalyst based on palladium (Pd) is one of the most preferable choices for catalytic hydrogenation reactions as the adsorption and dissociation of hydrogen molecules (H 2 ) are almost spontaneous on Pd surface to form the adsorbed H atoms (H ad ). However, in terms of alkyne semihydrogenation, it remains a grand challenge to optimize both the activity and selectivity of reactions using bare Pd catalysts as the case is largely complicated by the excessive H ad produced from rapid H 2 dissociation and the strong Pd-H binding. In this communication, a well-designed model is developed for seeking a selective semihydrogenation catalyst based on surface lattice engineering. In the proposed model, the ultrathin atomic layer of AuPd shell is grown on the Au nanocubes. The Au nanocubes provide specific facets as substrates for hosting catalytic sites, which can also provide information for further lattice engineering design. While Pd atoms are the active centers for hydrogenation reactions in the nanostructures, alloying Pd atoms with Au in the shells can significantly alter the binding of H ad to metals. As such, the activity and selectivity in catalytic alkyne semihydrogenation can be substantially maneuvered by tailoring the atomic arrangement of Pd and Au on surface. As a proof of concept, the Au@AuPd nanocatalyst with a surface Pd/Au ratio of 1:4 achieves a 98.9% semihydrogenation selectivity with a conversion of 98.2% in the 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBY) hydrogenation reaction.

Rational selection of halide ions for synthesizing highly active Au@Pd nanobipyramids

Fangyan Liu,Jia Ni,Hui Hao,Wei Wang,Wei Chen,Lijie Zhang,Chao Zou,Yun Yang,Shaoming Huang

Pd-based nanostructures with stepped facets possess potential applications in many fields, particularly in catalysis. Generally, crystal growth often only allows the formation of nanostructures with energetically non-stepped facets, so it is desirable to develop methods that can be used to prepare Pd-based nanostructures bounded by stepped facets. Herein, penta-fold twinned (PFT) Au@Pd nanobipyramids (NBs) with stepped {100} facets were synthesized through growing Pd on Au decahedral nanoparticles (NPs) in polyol. During the growth of Au@Pd NBs, Br− was a critical factor, because it has appropriate affinity for the Pd atom and adjusted the growth rate ratio along 〈110〉 and 〈100〉, resulting in the formation of Au@Pd NBs with stepped {100} facets. The product shape and size could be tailored by controlling the reaction conditions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), high angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging and scanning transmission electron microscopy EDS (STEM-EDS) were used to investigate the structure and growth of the Au@Pd NBs. A growth mechanism involving two stages was elucidated. In the first stage, the growth of Pd clearly occurred along both 〈110〉 and 〈100〉. In the second stage, the growth along 〈110〉 was faster than that along 〈100〉. Furthermore, we also demonstrated that the as-prepared Au@Pd NBs had high catalytic activity, compared with Pd nanocubes and Pd–Au–Pd segmental nanorods.
