Construction of Oriented Interconnected BNNS Skeleton by Self-Growing CNTs Leading High Thermal Conductivity

Xu Li,Bin Wu,Ya Li,Md Mofasserul Alam,Peng Chen,Ru Xia,Cheng-Te Lin,Jiasheng Qian

The development of thermal conduction polymer-based composites is important to solve the heat dissipation of electronic instruments under overheating conditions. The construction of thermal conductive pathways in composites and the reduction of contact resistance between fillers are crucial for concerning excellent thermal conduction properties. Herein, the oriented coherent thermal conductive network in composites is successfully developed via the in situ growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) skeleton prepared from ice-templated. The thermal conductivity of composites reaches 3.21 W m −1 K −1 approximately low filler loading of 9.86 vol%, due to the formation of the covalent bonding between CNTs and BNNSs as reducing the thermal contact resistance by one order of magnitude. More importantly, non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations are carried out to demonstrate the influence of CNTs in elevating the heat conductivity between BNNSs. Meanwhile, the volume resistivity of composites up to 10 15 Ω cm far met the requirement of electrical insulation. This study provided a valuable idea for the design of thermal management materials for potential applications in integrated circuits.

In-situ crosslinked polyetherimide/BNNS composites with ultrahigh charged-discharged efficiency at high temperature

Zheng Liu,Tianze Wang,Lixue Zhu,Zhenhua Jiang,Yunhe Zhang

High performance dielectric polymer composites for capacitive energy storage have been a hot topic in recent years. However, dielectric materials tend to breakdown at high temperature, and its charged-discharged efficiency is greatly reduced. Therefore, preparing high-efficient high-temperature dielectric material is the main challenge in this field. In this work, based on the synergistic effect of in-situ composite and controlled thermal cross-linking, the thermal conducting nano filler and crosslinking system composite has ultra-high charged-discharged efficiency at high temperature. It is proved that the addition amount of BNNS for the peak performance of this kind of composite is 10 vol% and the discharge energy density is 4.58 J/cm 3 and the charged-discharged efficiency reaches 96 % at 150 °C and 500 MV/m. At 200 °C and 300 MV/m, these are 1.76 J/cm 3 and astonishing 95 %. It is expected to be a candidate for a new generation of high temperature resistant dielectric materials.

Rapid exfoliation and surface hydroxylation of high-quality boron nitride nanosheets enabling waterborne polyurethane with high thermal conductivity and flame retardancy

Jiang Hao,Li Jindao,Xie Yuhui,Du Yirou,Zhao Junping,Mei Yi,Xie Delong

Boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) hold significant promise as functional additives in thermal management materials for high-density and high-power electronic devices. However, due to the surface chemical inertness and strong “lip-to-lip” interactions between adjacent layers of hexagonal boron nitride, efficient exfoliation and simultaneous surface functionalization of BNNS remain a challenge. In this work, an innovative approach combines alkali-assisted hydrothermal treatment with high-speed shearing, achieving an impressive 65% yield of high-quality BNNS with a thickness of only 2.54 nm. Moreover, the hydroxyl functional groups were successfully introduced to BNNS surfaces, rendering them suitable for waterborne polyurethane (WPU) to create a multifunctional heat-conductive film. In 50-R8-BNNS/WPU film, achieved by simply mixing 50 wt% BNNS within WPU, a remarkable through-thickness thermal conductivity of 7.58 Wm −1  K −1 was attained, which is 30-fold increase compared to pure WPU. Moreover, this film exhibits remarkable thermal stability, excellent tensile strength, and fire safety performance, which is used as thermal interface materials for high-power LED and exhibits better thermal management capabilities compared to commercial silicone greases. The finding establishes a straightforward and efficient method for producing high-quality BNNS suitable for the composites of electronic thermal management applications. Graphical abstract

Highly Thermally Conductive Flexible Biomimetic APTES-BNNS/BC Nanocomposite Paper by Sol–Gel-Film Technology

Baokang Yu,Zhouai Luo,Yuhang Zhou,Qi Zhang,Jianxin He,Jie Fan

Owing to the evolution of 5G technology, new energy vehicles, flexible electronics, miniaturization and integration of microelectronic devices, high-frequency and high-power devices, and thermal management of materials must consider additional limitations such as electrical insulation, excellent transverse heat transfer, flexibility, and weight. Boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) are ideal insulating materials with high thermal conductivity. However, the problem of the 3D thermal conductivity pathway and toughness strength of nanocomposite paper loaded with inorganic thermal conductivity fillers remains a huge challenge. In this study, we propose a new method for preparing ultrathin, large, and uniformly thick BNNS for quantitative production. Bulk hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers were exfoliated using a simple and low-cost hydrothermal reaction, and large-scale fewer-layered BNNSs were efficiently prepared by ball milling with a high yield (up to 80%). Based on the aforementioned step, a flexible insulating composite film with high thermal conductivity and a natural “brick-mud” shell structure was constructed via the sol–gel-film conversion method. After prestretching and hot-pressing treatment, the hydrogels became denser, and the modified BNNS formed a three-dimensional (3D) network structure with an ordered orientation and interconnections in the bacterial cellulose (BC) matrix. After 100 folding cycles, the tensile strength of the nanofiber composite film reached 53 MPa, and the strength retention rate exceeded 42%. By optimizing the modified BNNS content, the thermal conductivity reached 24 W/(m·K). This simple approach has wide application potential in the next-generation electronic devices, providing options for designing thermal interface materials with excellent electrical insulation, high thermal stability, and flexibility.

Highly thermally conductive BNNS/PANF dielectric composite boards prepared by a facile compression moulding process

Shen Zhao,Zhixiong Wu,Yemao Han,Di Jiang,Yue Xiang,Zhen Geng,Laifeng Li,Chunjie Xie,Zhicong Miao,Rongjin Huang

The structural design of an efficient heat conduction channel is critical for heat dissipation in electronic packaging material. The build of oriented boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS) network inside polymers has attracted much attention due to its excellent thermal conductivity and dielectric properties. However, to fabricate a BNNS/polymer composite, complex method and low thermal conductive resin for binding BNNS network are commonly involved, which severely restrict its facile production and enhancement in thermal conductivity. Herein, by utilizing para -aramid nanofibers (PANF) as assistance to BNNS to form thermal conduction network, we obtained high performance composite boards with good formability and adjustable sizes via a simple compression moulding of the BNNS/PANF aerogels. The composite boards exhibit a remarkable in-plane thermal conductivity of 10.62 W/m K −1 at 50 wt% BNNS loading, outstanding practical thermal management capability, excellent thermal stability, low dielectric constant and loss, showing great potential for electronic packaging applications. This facile construction strategy provides a feasible way for the large-scale production and application of high-performance thermal management materials in the future.

Heterostructured Al2O3@BNNS/epoxy-POSS/epoxy composites with excellent thermal conductivity, dielectric, and thermal properties

Lei Xie,Hongqiang Zhang,Yujian Liu,Yan Zhang

High thermal conductivity ( λ ) composite with excellent dielectric, mechanical, and thermal properties are critical to the reliability and safety of electrical devices. However, the excessive addition of thermal conductive fillers may lead to severe performance degradation. Heterogeneous structured alumina-hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (Al 2 O 3 @BNNS) fillers were prepared by electrostatic self-assembly method. Owing to synergistic effect of spherical Al 2 O 3 and sheet BN, and much low interface thermal resistance, λ of the epoxy resin with 20 wt% Al 2 O 3 @BNNS 2 is raised to 0.84 W·m −1 ·K −1 , 86.67% higher than that of Al 2 O 3 /BN/EP composite. Furthermore, epoxy-based polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (EP-POSS) was incorporated to further optimize dielectric property of the composite. The λ of the composite is slightly decreased, but the dielectric constant and dielectric loss are reduced to 2.954 and 0.01058, respectively, due to the unique cage structure of EP-POSS and excellent compatibility of EP-POSS with the matrix. The composite also exhibits favorable mechanical properties with an impact strength of 86.2 MPa and a bending strength of 7.81 kJ·m −2 , as well as outstanding thermal stability, suggesting its promising prospects for advanced electronic devices. Highlights f Al 2 O 3 and f BNNS electrostatic self-assemble into heterostructured fillers. The λ of Al 2 O 3 @BNNS 2 /EP composite is much higher than the others. The cage-like EP-POSS is used to improve dielectric properties of the epoxy resin. The ε and tan δ of composites at 1 MHz are only 2.954 and 0.01058, respectively.

BNNS Encapsulated TiO2 Nanofillers Endow Polypropylene Cable Insulation with Enhanced Dielectric Performance

Z. L. Li,M. S. Fan,S. F. Zhou,B. X. Du

In this work, nano-titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) is encapsulated into boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) by the calcination process to fabricate core-shell structured TiO 2 @BNNS nanofillers. The effects of TiO 2 @BNNS fillers on the DC conductivity, space charge and breakdown strength of polypropylene (PP) composites are investigated. Experimental results show that PP/TiO2@BNNS composites have a lower temperature-dependent conductivity with an activation energy of 0.64 eV, which is much lower than that of PP, 0.95 eV. The DC breakdown strength of PP/TiO 2 @BNNS samples is 22.2% higher than that of PP at 90 °C. The average space charge density and electric field distortion rate of PP/TiO 2 @BNNS are reduced by 6.6 C/m 3 and 23.3%, respectively, compared with PP, under a polarization electric field of 40 kV/mm at 90 °C. It is proven that TiO 2 @BNNS nanofillers form numbers of electrical potential wells for charge carriers, thereby, inhibiting the hot electron transport and their damage to polymer molecules. This work provides an effective method to improve the dielectric performance of PP cable insulation.

Facile construction of p–n heterojunction Bi2O3/BNNS for synergistic tetracycline removal through adsorption–photocatalysis

Zhao Du,Yanan Wu,Mengmeng Yu,Zishuang Cheng,Po Hu,Zhonglu Guo,Guifeng Chen,Chengchun Tang,Yi Fang

Herein, porous boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) exhibiting n-type semiconductor characteristics were synthesized via high-temperature pyrolysis. Subsequently, a series of Bi2O3/BNNS composites with superior photocatalytic activity were constructed using a solvothermal method. Experimental results demonstrate that the optimized composite photocatalyst exhibits significantly enhanced adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity compared to pristine BNNS and Bi2O3. The optimal Bi2O3/BNNS composite achieved degradation efficiencies of 94.65%, 94.23%, and 93.97% for tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and doxycycline (DC) (each at 50 mg L−1), respectively, under simulated solar irradiation. This study highlights that the exceptional adsorption capability of BNNS enables the Bi2O3/BNNS composite to fulfill the requirements for synergistic adsorption–photocatalysis. Furthermore, BNNS serves as an effective growth substrate, significantly regulating the growth of Bi2O3 nanowires and suppressing their agglomeration, thereby endowing the composite with a large specific surface area and pore volume. The formation of a p–n heterojunction also effectively suppresses the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers within the catalyst. Finally, this work elucidates the detailed process and underlying mechanism of photocatalytic tetracycline degradation driven by simulated sunlight. In summary, this study innovatively employs the Bi2O3/BNNS composite as a novel photocatalyst for tetracycline degradation and provides theoretical guidance for the design of advanced photocatalysts.

Achieving high temperature energy storage performance in PVDF through synergizing cross-linking and BNNs doping strategies

Qiuying Zhao,Jiachen Shi,Lu Yang,Ming Zhang,Hongli Ji,Jinhao Qiu

The growing demand for electrostatic capacitors in extreme conditions highlights the urgent need for polymer dielectric films with high breakdown strength ( E b ), high discharge energy density ( U e ), and outstanding high-temperature stability. Herein, a high-temperature stable capacitive composite film based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE)) is proposed by synergizing cross-linking and doping strategies. Specifically, P(VDF-CTFE) is engineered to form a cross-linking network and subsequently doped with surface-modified BNNs (BNNs-OH). By harnessing the synergistic effect between cross-linking and BNNs-OH doping, one can effectively restrict molecular mobility, disrupt the growth of crystalline domains, and inhibit the propagation of electrical trees and defects. This dual modification not only enhances the structural integrity of the polymer matrix but also improves its breakdown strength, high-temperature stability, and energy storage capabilities. The resultant composite film delivers a high discharge energy density up to 14.1 Jcm −3 at 25 °C and 13.59 Jcm −3 at 150 °C, validating its distinguished temperature stability over a wide temperature range. This study presents a facile strategy to develop advanced polymer dielectric films for harsh operating environments where both performance and durability are crucial.

Sandwich-Structured BNNS/rGO-g-POSS/PVDF Composites with Significantly Enhanced Dielectric and Energy Storage Performance

Hui Liu,Anqi Li,Qingnan Chen

The improvement in energy storage performance of graphene/polymer composites has long been restricted by insufficient breakdown strength (Eb) and high dielectric loss, both of which result from conductive losses caused by the aggregation of graphene nanosheets. In this paper, aminopropylisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS-NH2) encapsulated graphene oxide (GO) (GO-g-POSS) hybrids were prepared to inhibit the restacking of graphene and block the formation of conductive paths. Furthermore, the design of sandwich-structured films is also an efficient approach to improving the breakdown performance of composite materials. Novel sandwich-structured composite films containing outer layers of BNNS/PVDF films and a middle rGO-g-POSS/PVDF layer were successfully prepared by the layer-by-layer assembly process. The B-0.50-B sandwich-structured composites achieved an optimal discharge energy storage density (Ue) of 9.08 J cm−3 and Eb of 432 MV m−1.

Excellent Anti-fouling Properties and High Thermal Conductivity of Superhydrophobic SiC/PU-Coated BNNS Composite Films

Hong Zhen,Xing Yun,Xue Mingshan,Yang Dan,Luo Yidan,Yin Zuozhu,Xie Chan

Owing to their excellent thermal conductivity (TC), boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS)-filled polymer composite films have aroused great interest in their use for heat dissipation in the electronics industry. However, the application of BNNS composite films is limited by their lack of hydrophobicity and non-fouling properties, as well as their low corrosion resistance, affecting their long-term stability in specific environments, such as high humidity environment, rainwater erosion, corrosion from pollutants, and dust pollution. In this work, a composite film with both superhydrophobicity and a high TC was constructed by spraying a silicon carbide (SiC) and polyurethane (PU) coating modified by perfluorooctylmethoxysilane (PFTMS) onto the surface of BNNS-filled polymer composite films. The PFTMS coupling agent not only improved the dispersibility of SiC in PU and the combination of SiC with PU, but also reduced the surface free energy of the film. The optimal mass ratio of SiC to PU for the SiC/PU composite coating was 1.2:1, resulting in superhydrophobic properties with a contact angle (CA) of 168.6 ± 1.3° and a rolling angle (RA) of 2.8 ± 1.2°. Meanwhile, SiC with higher TC also allowed the BNNS-filled composite films to maintain a high TC (32.3 W/m K). The composite films exhibited excellent TC and self-cleaning ability, as well as improved mechanical and chemical stability of the surface, which provides a strategy for enhancing the environmental adaptability of BNNS composite films and broadening their application scenarios. Dopamine Functionalized BNNS/PAN Core-Shell Nanofiber Membrane with High Thermal Conductivity and Excellent Dielectric Properties

Shicheng Miao,Xiang Wang,Zhenzhen Dong,Yiran Xiang,Lige Wang,Zinuo Zhao

As the power density of miniaturized electronic devices continues to increase, the development of multifunctional thermal management composites that combine excellent thermal conductivity with low dielectric loss has emerged as a critical challenge in addressing the heat dissipation limitations. However, uneven filler dispersion and interfacial phonon scattering and polarization loss in conventional composites severely limit the synergistic optimization of comprehensive performance. In this work, core-shell structured polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with dopamine-modified boron nitride nanosheets (PBN) interconnected to form a thermally conductive network were innovatively constructed by coaxial electrospinning and hot-pressing process design strategies, the final in-plane orientation is achieved through the process of hot-pressing. The incorporation of 10wt% PBN loading resulted in a substantial enhancement in thermal conductivity. The in-plane thermal conductivity of the composite was enhanced to 6.99 W.m -1 .K -1 , representing an increase of 1377.7% over neat PAN, and the out-of-plane thermal conductivity was as high as 0.387 W.m -1 .K -1 , an increase of 674% over the neat PAN film. Excellent electrical insulation (volume resistivity =6.04×10 14 Ω.cm) with low dielectric properties (ε=1.89 at 1 kHz, tanδ=0.012) is maintained at the same time. The material demonstrates considerable potential for application in scenarios such as chip heat dissipation and flexible printed circuit boards, thereby providing innovative solutions for the thermal design of next generation, highly reliable electronic devices.
