Gaseous toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene mixture removal in a microbial fuel cell: Performance, biofilm characteristics, and mechanisms

Shihan Zhang,Juping You,Han Chen,Jiexu Ye,Zhuowei Cheng,Jianmeng Chen

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are regarded as promising alternatives to anaerobic benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) mineralization due to the enhancement of microbial degradation rate caused by bioanodes. In this research, a dual-chambered MFC was employed to evaluate the removal efficiency and power generation of single TE( o -X) or of dual or ternary TE( o -X) mixtures. Individually, TE( o -X) was readily biodegradable with a removal efficiency of 94.8%, 86.3%, and 71.6%, respectively, but the presence of toluene and o -xylene exhibited an adverse influence on the degradation of other mixed components. The o -xylene has the greatest inhibitory effect on microbial activity, as evidenced by laser scanning confocal microscope images. Microbial community analysis revealed that exoelectrogens prevailed in the absence of the o -xylene. Shifting the feeding gas from toluene to another individual gas or mixture caused the quantities of the exoelectrogens to gradually decrease. Moreover, the o -xylene degrader of Alicycliphilus sp. were prevailed from ~17.7% to ~60.3% in presence of the o -xylene. In addition, the observation of the nanowire/pili using scanning electron microscope images and cyclic voltammetry analysis revealed that the electrons produced were transferred to the anode directly.

Interaction of inhalable volatile organic compounds and pulmonary surfactant: Potential hazards of VOCs exposure to lung

Qun Zhao,Yingjie Li,Xiaolong Chai,Linzhen Xu,Linfeng Zhang,Ping Ning,Jianhong Huang,Senlin Tian

Exposure of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) towards lung leads to pulmonary dysfunctions and various lung diseases. However, the interaction of VOCs with pulmonary surfactant (PS) that directly comes into contact with inhaled VOCs is unknown. Here, simulated PS extracted from porcine lungs (EPS) was used to study the interaction with BTEX (i.e., benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and p -xylene) as representatives of VOCs. Surface pressure-area (π-A) isotherms showed that in the presence of individual BTEX, EPS monolayer’s phase conversion from gas to liquid expanded phase was dramatically influenced and its collapse pressure decreased greatly compared to those of EPS alone, which was attributed to the alteration of EPS monolayer’s microstructure characterized by atomic force microscopy and Brewster angle microscopy. Solubilization experiments manifested that EPS and its major components (dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine, DPPC; bovine serum albumin, BSA) exhibited obvious solubilization effects on individual BTEX. The solubilization capacity followed an order: EPS > DPPC > BSA, which was positively correlated with hydrophobicity of individual BTEX. Synergistic solubilization test unveiled that the mixed phospholipid components were largely responsible for the solubilization capacity of EPS. These findings indicate that VOCs exposure may induce potential pulmonary health risk due to the alteration of gas-liquid interfacial properties of PS.

Mechanisms of biostimulant-enhanced biodegradation of PAHs and BTEX mixed contaminants in soil by native microbial consortium

Mukhtiar Ali,Xin Song,Qing Wang,Zhuanxia Zhang,Jilu Che,Xing Chen,Zhiwen Tang,Xin Liu

Despite the co-occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) in the field, to date, knowledge on the bioremediation of benzene and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) mixed contaminants is limited. In this study, the mechanisms underlying the biodegradation of benzene and BaP under individual and co-contaminated conditions followed by the enhanced biodegradation using methanol, ethanol, and vegetable oil as biostimulants were investigated. The results demonstrated that the benzene biodegradation was highly reduced under the co-contaminated condition compared to the individual benzene contamination, whereas the BaP biodegradation was slightly enhanced with the co-contamination of benzene. Moreover, biostimulation significantly improved the biodegradation of both contaminants under co-contaminated conditions. A trend of significant reduction in the bioavailable BaP contents was observed in all biostimulant-enhanced groups, implying that the bioavailable BaP was the preferred biodegradable BaP fraction. Furthermore, the enzymatic activity analysis revealed a significant increase in lipase and dehydrogenase (DHA) activities, as well as a reduction in the catalase and polyphenol oxidase , suggesting that the increased hydrolysis of fats and proton transfer, as well as the reduced oxidative stress , contributed to the enhanced benzene and BaP biodegradation in the vegetable oil treatment. In addition, the microbial composition analysis results demonstrated that the enriched functional genera contributed to the increased biodegradation efficiency, and the functional genera in the microbial consortium responded differently to different biostimulants, and competitive growth was observed in the biostimulant-enhanced treatments. In addition, the enrichment of Pseudomonas and Rhodococcus species was noticed during the biostimulation of benzene and BaP co-contamination soil, and was positively correlated with the DHA enzyme activities , indicating that these species encode DHA genes which contributed to the higher biodegradation. In conclusion, multiple lines of evidence were provided to shed light on the mechanisms of biostimulant-enhanced biodegradation of PAHs and BTEX co-contamination with native microbial consortiums.

Hydroxyapatite nanorods: a nanobiomaterial for chemical detection of aniline vapor

Wang Luyu,Wang Bing,Wu Yunling,Song Jia

Abstract Selective chemical detection of aniline vapor from benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) is still a challenge. Here, we deliberately design a hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanorods nanobiomaterial modifying on the quartz crystal microbalance transducer for highly efficient detection of aniline from aniline/BTEX mixture. Besides, at room temperature, HAP nanorods perform excellent sensitivity of aniline, and the corresponding detection limit can reach down to 5 part per billion (ppb). The stability of HAP nanorods in the sensing process is also satisfactory. The sensing mechanism, as unveiled by the theoretical basis and the enthalpy extraction experiment, is due to the moderate acid–base absorptive interaction between aniline molecule and the HAP structure. The molecular formula of hydrate C 6 H 7 N·βH 2 O existing in wet air (with 50–90% relative humidity) can be obtained as C 6 H 7 N·1.36∼1.93H 2 O based on quantitatively measurement data. Determination of Ethanol and Aromatics in Blood by Headspace Portable Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (HS-PGC-MS)

Yigong Geng,Shun Zhang,Jing Lin,Xuchu Zhu,Wenqing Gao,Junhui Li,Chenlu Wang,Yong Wu,Renlu Han,Keqi Tang,Jiancheng Yu

Ethanol abuse is increasingly becoming a global issue, adversely affecting both society and families. In blood alcohol concentration (BAC) detection, traditional techniques have long experimental cycles and harsh experimental conditions and often fail to produce timely results. Consequently, achieving swift and precise on-site detection of ethanol poisoning in humans poses a formidable challenge in analytical science. We designed a novel assay for swift on-site analysis of ethanol and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) poisoning in humans using a custom portable headspace injector (portable HS) and portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (portable GC-MS). This setup, known for its lightweight design and speed, allows on-site sampling and delivers rapid results. We established a calibration curve (R2 > 0.99) for ethanol in blood using portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (portable GC-MS). This on-site blood alcohol concentration (BAC) assay proves simpler than traditional methods, enabling rapid analysis of each sample within a short timeframe and requiring only a small blood volume (0.1 ml). In addition to our investigation on ethanol, we developed a portable method for detecting BTEX in blood. This method provides a favorable coefficient of determination (R2 > 0.99) for various substances, thereby broadening the utility of portable mass spectrometry in areas such as traffic inspection and forensic identification.

Application of recyclable nano zero-valent iron encapsulated L-cysteine catalytic cylinder product for degradation of BTEX in groundwater by persulfate oxidation

Sun Xuecheng,Cui Changzheng,Yang Chaoxiang,Lyu Shuguang

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) possess a negative impact on the environment and human beings due to their highly toxic and carcinogenic properties. In this study, persulfate (PS) activated by nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) coupled with chelated L-cysteine (L-cys) process was investigated for BTEX degradation in contaminated groundwater. BTEX degradation had a significant acceleration and improvement with the removal from 62.7 to 100% along with the increasing dosage of L-cys from 0.12 to 0.27 M in 24 h. Further, the compact nZVI catalytic cylinder and nZVI encapsulated L-cys catalytic cylinder were successfully manufactured by encapsulating nZVI, and nZVI and L-cys together with additives of cement, river sand, stearic acid (SA) and zeolite. The SEM image, XRD patterns and FTIR spectra showed that the manufactured catalytic cylinder had a porous structure and encapsulated nZVI and L-cys successfully. Six successive cycles of BTEX degradation were completed and the degradation rate decreased gradually in each cycle. The catalytic activity of nZVI encapsulated L-cys catalytic cylinder was superior to nZVI catalytic cylinder in each cycle. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results indicated that HO• was the dominant active species in the BTEX degradation process. Benzoic acid (BA) scavenge experiments showed that L-cys could increase the yield of HO• in the PS/nZVI system. The HO• yields of PS/nZVI encapsulated L-cys catalytic cylinder system were 3.2 to 4.8 fold higher than those of the PS/nZVI catalytic cylinder system. The possible mechanisms of PS activation by nZVI encapsulated L-cys catalytic cylinder were supposed. Homogeneous Fenton reaction and heterogeneous catalysis on the nZVI surface are two co-existence mechanisms in the PS/nZVI encapsulated L-cys catalytic cylinder system. The findings of this study provide new insights into the mechanism of nZVI encapsulated L-cys catalytic cylinder activating PS, showing its potential applications for the remediation of groundwater. PS/nZVI/L-cys system was applied to remediate BTEX contaminants. The compact nZVI encapsulated L-cys catalytic cylinder was successfully manufactured. Six successive cycles of BTEX degradation were completed. Two co-existence mechanisms in the PS/nZVI encapsulated L-cys catalytic cylinder system were investigated. PS/nZVI catalytic cylinder systems were recommended for BTEX-contaminated groundwater remediation.

Degradation of BTEX in groundwater by nano-CaO2 particles activated with L-cysteine chelated Fe(III): enhancing or inhibiting hydroxyl radical generation

Sun Xuecheng,Ali Meesam,Cui Changzheng,Lyu Shuguang

The simultaneous oxidation performance of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) by nanoscale calcium peroxide particles (nCaO 2 ) activated with ferric ions (Fe(III)) and the mechanism of the enhancement of BTEX degradation by L-cysteine (L-cys) were investigated. The batch experimental results showed that the nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys process was effective in the destruction of BTEX in both ultrapure water and actual groundwater. A proper amount of L-cys could enhance BTEX degradation due to the promotion of Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycles by the participation of L-cys, but an excessive presence of L-cys would cause inhibition. Adding 1.0 mM L-cys to the nCaO 2 /Fe(III) system, the concentration of Fe(II) increased to 1.15 mM instantly. Simultaneously, the yield of HO• produced by the 1.0 mM L-cys-containing system was 0.066 mM at 180 min reaction, higher than that without L-cys (0.049 mM). When excess L-cys (5.0 mM) was added to the system, the amount of Fe(II) increased to 3.73 mM because excessive L-cys caused a large amount of Fe(III) in the system to be reduced. However, the yield of HO• decreased to 0.043 mM since excessive Fe(II) could conversely scavenge HO• to produce Fe(III) again. EPR tests and quenching results indicated that HO• was the dominant reactive species in the nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys system. For the removal of BTEX, the optimal molar ratio of nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys was 10.5/20/1 based on calculation by response surface methodology (RSM). Finally, the BTEX destruction pathway was proposed according to the detected intermediates by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). nCaO 2 /Fe(III) system with L-cysteine (L-cys) was applied to remediate mixed contaminants. A suitable amount of L-cys promoted redox cycling (Fe(III) → Fe(II)). The mechanism of enhancing or inhibiting hydroxyl radical generation was investigated. Proposed BTEX destruction pathway in the nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys system. nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys system was recommended for BTEX-contaminated actual groundwater remediation.

Developing novel persulfate pellets to remediate BTEXs-contaminated groundwater

Bing Wang,Yuzhu Zhang,Chunyang Gao,Xianyuan Du,Tongxu Qu

Organic-contaminated groundwater poses a growing threat to environmental sustainability and human health. As a passive plume control technology, permeable reactive barriers (PRBs)have become a popular method for groundwater pollutants degradation due to their cost-effective and sustainable merits. However, active materials adopted in conventional PRBs have the shortcomings of easy deactivation and speedy consumption. As an alternative, slow-release materials can be used as PRBs fillers to treat contaminated groundwater because of their long chemical release time. In this study, novel slow-release persulfate pellets were prepared and tested for their release capabilities and effectiveness in the remediation of groundwater organic pollution. Results show that each pellet's release efficiency and average release rate within 14 days were 87.36 % and 46.80 mg-persulfate/d, respectively, when the mass ratio of sodium persulfate to paraffin was 3/1. Dissolution and diffusion via pores are the main mechanisms of the persulfate delivery from slow-release pellets in water. Moreover, solution pH, ionic species and addition of quartz sand into release pellets play dissimilar effects on the release kinetics. Results from column experiments indicate that the pellets could expand the PS influence range in the barrier and continuously remediate BTEXs-contaminated groundwater (initial concentration of each compound = 50 mg/L) and reach 64.2–85.1 % removal efficiency. The results of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy show that both SO 4 − and OH contribute to the removal of BTEXs. This study demonstrates the potential feasibility of slow-release persulfate materials for groundwater pollution treatments by PRBs, which inspires for future field applications.

Trichloroethene degradation by nanoscale CaO2 activated with Fe(II)/FeS: The role of FeS and the synergistic activation mechanism of Fe(II)/FeS

Yong Sun,Muhammad Danish,Meesam Ali,Ali Shan,Ming Li,Yanchen Lyu,Zhaofu Qiu,Qian Sui,Xueke Zang,Shuguang Lyu

The performance of trichloroethene (TCE) degradation was significantly improved with the addition of FeS in nanoscale calcium peroxide (nCP) environment and the enhancement of HO generation in nCP/Fe(II)/FeS system was confirmed by comparison with nCP/Fe(II) and nCP/FeS systems. The role of FeS in nCP/Fe(II)/FeS system demonstrated that the majority of reactive oxygen radicals (ROSs) was generated on the catalyst surface due to the heterogeneous reaction through FeS activated nCP in one hand, and the reductive FeS could promote TCE degradation by regenerating Fe(II) from Fe(III) in the other hand. The probe as well as scavenger test results suggested that the major ROSs was HO rather than O 2 − . Over 91.5% TCE could be degraded at the molar ratio of 2/2/4/1 of nCP/Fe(II)/FeS/TCE, in which more than 95.5% TCE was dechlorinated. The effect of surfactants on TCE degradation was evaluated. In contrast, further investigation found that BTEX removal was inhibited with the addition of FeS. In conclusion, this study revealed the well function and fundamental synergistic mechanism of FeS. Moreover, the degradation of TCE in actual groundwater confirmed that nCP/Fe(II)/FeS technique has a great advantage and potential in TCE contaminated groundwater remediation in ISCO practice.

Modulating acid site spatial location of Zn/ZSM-5 catalyst to boost the stable aromatization of hexane

Hao Yan,Delun Ren,Zhiqiang Li,Junshu Chen,Xinyang Zhang,Yanhao Wang,Gongzheng Duan,Xiang Feng,Xin Zhou,Yibin Liu,Xiaobo Chen,Chaohe Yang

Engineering acid site spatial location of zeolite catalyst harbors tremendous potential to boost catalytic performance but still remains a grand challenge for aromatization reaction. Herein, we successfully manipulate acid site spatial location inside the ZSM-5 channels to promote the hexane aromatization via the simple SiO 2 coating treatment. Multi-techniques demonstrated that the medium strong L acid in the channel originated from the Si(Al)  O  Zn structure is mainly retained in the Zn/ZSM-5-Si catalyst by covering the acid sites outside the channel. Surprisingly, there is a good linear relationship between BTEX yield and this medium strong L acid content. Based on the reaction kinetics, in situ FT-IR and theoretical calculations, it is found that the L acid with confinement effect served as the main active site could prominently enhance the cyclization of propene intermediate and the dehydrogenation of cycloalkane due to the strong affinity between the C/H and ZnOx, and control the desorption of BTEX (mainly benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and p-xylene) by weakening the binding of hydrogen proton to π electrons. Compared with the ordinary Zn/ZSM-5 catalyst, the yield of BTEX is increased by nearly 10%, and the Zn/ZSM-5-Si catalyst exhibits excellent anti coking deactivation ability. This strategy together with mechanistic results may pave the rational design of efficient Zn/ZSM-5 catalysts for aromatization reaction.
