Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are viable contenders for large-scale energy storage systems owing to the plentiful supply of sodium resources. However, the poor stability of electrolyte/ electrode interface severely limits the cycle life of SIBs. Herein, sodium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate (NaTFPB), a boron-centered fluorinated organic sodium salt, is used as a bifunctional additive in the Base electrolyte (NaPF 6 in EC/DMC/FEC) for NaNi 0.33 Fe 0.33 Mn 0.33 O 2 ||hard carbon pouch cells. Theoretical simulations and experimental studies demonstrate that NaTFPB modulates the first solvation shell structure of Na + and undergoes preferential redox reactions at both electrodes simultaneously. This behaviour contributes to the formation of robust interfacial layers. As a result, uniform and stable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers, enriched with NaF and boron compounds, are formed. The Ah-scale pouch cell with NaTFPB exhibits a high capacity retention of 79 % after 500 cycles at 1 C rate under room temperature. Remarkably, under harsh operational stress combining elevated temperature (45 °C) and an upper high cutoff voltage of 4.1 V, the cell retains 96 % capacity retention over 250 cycles. Additionally, it exhibits excellent low-temperature discharge capability at −20 °C. This innovative design of functional additive addresses interfacial stability challenges, advancing high-energy–density SIBs for practical applications.

Graphical Butyric anhydride was used as carbonate-based electrolyte additive to construct a thin, uniform cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) film that can alleviate the decomposition of the electrolyte and prevent the dissolution of metal ions to maintain the structural stability of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) during the cycling process, and improve the electrochemical performance of LNMO cathodes in carbonate-based electrolytes. Butyric anhydride (BA) is used as an effective functional additive to improve the electrochemical performance of a high-voltage LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) cathode. In the presence of 0.5 wt % BA, the capacity retention of a LNMO/Li cell is significantly improved from 15.3 to 88.4 % after 200 cycles at 1 C. Furthermore, the rate performance of the LNMO/Li cell is also effectively enhanced, and the capacity goes up to 112 mAh g −1 even at 5 C, which is considerably higher than that of a LNMO/Li cell in electrolyte without BA additive (95.4 mAh g −1 at 5 C). Linear sweep voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry results reveal that the BA additive can be preferentially oxidized to construct a stable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) film on the LNMO cathode. Subsequently, the BA-derived CEI film can alleviate the decomposition of the electrolyte and the dissolution of Mn and Ni ions from the LNMO cathode as well as maintain the structural stability of LNMO during the cycling process; this leads to outstanding electrochemical performance. Thus, this work provides an effective and low-cost functional electrolyte for high-voltage LNMO-based LIBs.

With the ever-increasing demand for high power and high energy batteries, extensive researches devote to high voltage cathode materials. Graphite cathode-based dual-ion batteries (DIBs) possess the unique advantages of high working voltage (≈4.5−5.0) and high power, but still suffer from low coulombic efficiency and poor long-term stability mainly resulted by the serious oxidative decomposition of electrolytes and significant structural deterioration of graphite cathode. From the perspectives of simultaneously reinforcing the mechanical strength of graphite cathode and suppressing the decomposition of electrolytes via a cathode/electrolyte interphase (CEI), polyacrylic acid (PAA) is adopted as the surface modifier of natural graphite (NG). The mechanical stability of graphite cathode is significantly improved by virtue of the bonding interaction between PAA and binder, which is validated through both theoretical calculation and experimental observation. In addition, PAA contributes to the formation of a LiF-rich and homogeneous CEI through the preferential adsorption of anions, and effectively mitigates the cointercalation and decomposition of solvent. As the cathode material of DIBs, NG@PAA manifests fast charge/discharge capability and outstanding capacity retention of 73.9% after 8000 cycles. This work provides a surface modification strategy for optimizing the performance of electrode materials from multiple perspectives.

In this paper, we propose a new electrolyte additive 3-Isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (IPTS) to improve the cycle stability and rate performance of Ni-Rich (LiNi 0·6 Co 0·2 Mn 0·2 O 2 ) cathode half-cell. Density function theory calculations suggest that IPTS has higher HOMO energy than solvent, which can decompose preferentially. Moreover, we confirm the oxidative decomposition by the linear scanning cyclic voltammetry , which can achieve stable at a cutoff voltage of 2.5–4.5 Vs. (Li/Li + ). The cyclic voltammetry curves at different scan rates indicate that the migration rate of lithium ions is higher in the cells with 0.5% additive than in the base electrolyte. After 150 cycles, the capacity retention rates in the base electrolyte and in the additive-containing electrolyte are 55.4% and 73.1%, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy show that the additive is involved in film formation, and the obtained CEI film is very uniform and dense, which play a key role in stabilizing the electrolyte under high voltage.

Increasing the cut-off voltage of cathodes can improve the energy density of Li||LiCoO 2 batteries. However, the electrolyte and cathode suffer from oxidation and deterioration at high voltage, respectively, which lead to rapid battery degradation. Herein, a uniform, highly Li + conductive cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) is constructed by using bis-(benzenesulfonyl)imide (BBSI) as an additive to stabilize Li||LiCoO 2 batteries at 4.6 cut-off voltage with superior cycling and high-rate performance. Such a CEI is comprised of LiF and conductive Li + moieties (e.g., Li 2 S and Li 3 N), which can improve the Li + migration, alleviate cathode degradation, and other secondary degradation factors caused by uneven local Li + intercalation/deintercalation. As expected, Li||LiCoO 2 batteries with a 1% BBSI-containing electrolyte sustain 81.30% of initial capacity after 300 cycles at 0.5C, and 88.27% of initial capacity even after 500 cycles at 2C/3C.

Due to long-term operation under high voltage, the cathode of lithium metal battery undergoes parasitic reactions with the electrolyte, resulting in non-conductive polymers that severely affect the battery's electrochemical performance and kinetics. In addition, the safety performance of the battery is seriously compromised by severe lithium deposition on the lithium metal side. The use of electrolyte additives is one of the most cost-effective strategies for improvement. A low-cost boron-based additive bis(pinacolato)diboron (BDB) has been proposed in this work which has relatively high activity during battery charging and discharging. A protective cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) film was formed by BDB on the surface of NCM811 in advance to resist HF and solvent erosion. Furthermore, the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film that BDB participates in on the lithium metal surface exhibits high ion conductivity and effectively inhibits the formation of lithium dendrites, thereby ensuring the safe operation of lithium metal batteries. The lithium metal battery utilizing BDB not only exhibits optimal electrochemical performance with a high cut-off voltage of 4.6 V, but also demonstrates potential for further development in the realms of rapid charging and discharging.

Cathodes containing Ni, Co, and Mn frequently undergo side reactions with the electrolyte during the long cycles of the battery in traditional electrolytes under high voltage. In this work, an efficient composite cathode–electrolyte interface (CEI) film is constructed in situ with two additives; that is, 2-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]thiophene (TET) is oxidized and polymerized in advance to form a film attached to the cathode surface, while oxidation products of bis(pinacolato)diboron (BDB) as a high ion conductor are doped into the TET polymer film. The combination of the oxidation products of the two additives not only effectively isolates solvent molecules and hydrofluoric acid erosion, preventing the occurrence of side reactions, but also does not affect the transfer of lithium ions. The crystal structure stability of LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NCM811) could be effectively regulated by the composite CEI film through in situ X-ray diffraction characterization during the charge–discharge process. The dynamic performance of the battery has also been improved by comparing the discrepancy of pseudocapacitance across the battery with different electrolytes. Furthermore, the solid–electrolyte interface film formed by TET and BDB could provide effective protection for lithium metal from electrolyte corrosion and inhibit the formation of lithium dendrites. Therefore, the battery capacity retention rate could reach 91.12% after 300 cycles. In addition, the battery with a high-load cathode (2.52 mAh cm–2) has a capacity retention rate of up to 90.19% after 50 cycles, which may make the future application of pouch batteries more feasible.

Three kinds of functional organosilicons electrolyte additives, i. e. octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS) and 2,4,6,8-tetramethyl-2,4,6,8-tetravinylcyclotetra- siloxane (ViD4), are firstly used to produce high-performance LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 cathode for rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries (NCM622/Li half-cell) at a high potential. The electrochemical performance tests at 4.5 V suggest that ViD4 is the most promising electrolyte additive than its counterparts. Moreover, the prepared NCM622/Li half-cell with 0.5 wt.% ViD4 exhibits an improved energy density of 187.2 mAh g −1 and a good discharge capacity retention of 83.6% at 1C rate after 150 cycles at 4.5 V, which is relatively higher than that with D4 (81.3%), OMCTS (81.9%) and much better than the bare electrolyte (76.1%). The electrochemical characterizations, density functional theory calculation and surface analysis provide strong evidences that combined effects of the Si-O bond and vinyl functional group in ViD4 can promote the formation of a uniform cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) film. Moreover, the ViD4-incorporated CEI film effectively enhances the interfacial stability between the NCM622 cathode and the electrolyte by suppressing the continuous decomposition of carbonate-based electrolyte and the exfoliation of these decomposition products. Hence, the ViD4-containing electrolyte shows a promising potential for the application in high energy density lithium-ion batteries.

Although improving the charging cutoff voltage is an effective strategy to increase its capacity, LiCoO2 (LCO) undergoes rapid capacity decay due to severe structure and interface degradation at high voltages. Herein, we proposed a multifunctional surface modification by coating nano-sized high-entropy materials (Li-La-Ti-Zr-Co-O, Nano-MEO). Nano-MEO rivets are constructed on the surface of LCO, which stabilizes the fragile surface. Besides, Ti enriched on the surface induced a stable and thin CEI, promoting Li+ diffusion across the interface. Meanwhile, the diffusion of La and Zr into the LCO bulk phase effectively improves the transportation of Li+ and suppresses irreversible phase transition. Consequently, LCO modified by Nano-MEO exhibits excellent capacity retention of 84% after 100 cycles at 4.55 V. Therefore, the coating of high-entropy materials with the advantages of multi-element synergy, increases the degree of freedom for the modulation of electronic and crystal structure, which is instructive for the development of high-voltage LCO.

Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) is considered the most prominent cathode material to establish a practical high energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for future electric vehicles. The energy density of LIBs is greatly determined by the capacity of electrode materials and the operating voltage of the cells. To further improve the cycle lifespan of NCM811 batteries to meet the requirement of driving range for the electric vehicle market, it is vital to design a novel electrolyte additive that can enhance the stability of the cathode/electrolyte interface at a wide range of voltage. Herein, a novel borate functionalized disiloxane compound, 1,1,1,3,3-pentamethyl-3-(3-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)propyl) disiloxane (PMBPDS), is synthesized as cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) film-forming additive to improve the cycling performance of NCM811 batteries. Systematic studies reveal that PMBPDS can construct a stable CEI film on the NCM811 surface and efficiently scavenge hydrofluoric acid (HF). The PMBPDS-derived CEI prevents the dissolution of transmission metals in the NCM811 cathode and enhances the capacity retention of NCM811/graphite cells from 68.3 to 70.6% after 200 cycles at 1 C in the voltage window of 3–4.5 V. This work provides more understanding on designing the molecular structure of additive compounds for improving the electrochemical performance of LIBs.

All-solid-state batteries with oxide electrolytes and high-nickel layered oxide cathodes (LiNixCoyMnzO2 and LiNixCoyAlzO2, x + y + z = 1, x ≥ 60%) have received widespread attention owing to their high energy density and high safety. However, they generally suffer from interfacial structural instability when coupled with solid-state electrolytes, which strongly diminishes the longevity of the battery. In this work, we propose adding a sacrificial additive C60 to the catholyte buffer layer between Li1.4Al0.4Ti1.6(PO4)3 (LATP) and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) to enhance the electrochemical stability under high-voltage operating conditions. A uniform and robust cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) film enriched with LixPOyFz, LiPxFy, and C60Fn is spontaneously formed on the surface of the cathode particles. In addition, the NCM811/Li solid-state battery delivers a discharge capacity of 150.3 mAh g–1 with a retention of 85% after 200 charge–discharge cycles at 0.5 C. This study offers a practical approach toward realizing LATP-based all-solid-state high-voltage batteries characterized by exceptional cycling stability.

Ni-rich layered structure materials are appealing cathodes for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries developed for electric vehicles, drones, power tools, etc. However, poor interfacial stability between a Ni-rich cathode and carbonate electrolyte, especially at high temperatures, and fast capacity fading still hinder their mass market penetration. Here, we investigate cyclopentyl isocyanate (CPI) with a single isocyanate (−NCO) functional group as a bifunctional electrolyte additive for the first time to improve the interfacial stability of Ni-rich cathode LiNi0.83Co0.12Mn0.05O2 (NCM83). With an electrolyte containing 2 wt % CPI, the NCM83 cathode shows capacity retention of up to 92.3% after 200 cycles at 1C and 30 °C, much higher than that with the standard electrolyte (78.6%). It is demonstrated that the −NCO of CPI could largely inhibit the thermal decomposition of LiPF6 salt and scavenge water and hydrogen fluoride (HF) species, improving electrolyte stability. More importantly, the additive CPI could be preferentially oxidized, forming a stabilized and protective cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer on the surface of NCM83, which effectively suppresses the parasitic side reactions and maintains the superior interfacial charge-transfer and lithium-ion diffusion kinetics. Both functions enable a significant improvement in electrochemical performance at both 30 and 60 °C.
