The low sustainable current density in darkness restricts the advancement of photocathodic protection (PCP) for steels in marine environments. A combination of MoO 3 /WO 3 (Mo/WO 3 ) was proposed as an electron storage system to enhance capacitance and charge/discharge rates. Subsequently, incorporating ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) extended light harvesting and improved photocarrier separation efficiency, resulting in efficient round-the-clock PCP performance. Under illumination, the open circuit potential (OCP) of 10Mo/WO 3 @ZIS coupled with 304SS reaches −0.97 V vs. Ag/AgCl, approximately 600 mV and 140 mV more negative than corrosion potential (E corr ) of 304SS and WO 3 @ZIS coupled 304SS, whth photocurrent density of 134 μA/cm 2 . The excellent PCP performance is attributed to superior photocarrier separation and enhanced light-harvesting capability. Notably, in the dark, the OCP of the coupled system remains ca . 0.4 V below the E corr of 304SS, with an average current density of 30 μA/cm 2 , demonstrating the regulated electron storage capabilities of Mo/WO 3 . Furthermore, capacity and charge/discharge rates correlate with Mo/W ratio and electrolyte species. 10Mo/WO 3 @ZIS exhibits a charge capacity of 2.93 mC, nearly 3 times higher than that of WO 3 @ZIS. The innovative application of MoO 3 and WO 3 proves the potential to regulate the electron storage performance, revealing the factors for photoelectron storage/release.

Biological rhythm output by central and peripheral circadian clock is closely associated with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) development, but the down-stream targets of the hepatic clock are not well known. This work aimed to investigate how hepatic circadian clock regulates MAFLD development. Male mice were fed a 45% high fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks to screen the lipid metabolism genes regulated by clock factors in natural MAFLD development. Core circadian factor circadian locomotor output cycles kaput (CLOCK) knockdown and over-expression in cellular models were performed to explore the role of its potential target SREBP1 found in vivo. rAAV8-CAG-EGFP- Clock was delivered in mice to validate the role of SREBP1 signaling regulated by CLOCK. HFD induced body weight gain and steatosis in the liver. The hepatic core circadian factor CLOCK was significantly down-regulated and the lipid metabolism was disrupted including up-regulation of Srebf1 which encodes transcription factor SREBP1. In mouse and human cellular models, SREBP1 and the lipid accumulation were increased by CLOCK knockdown and decreased by CLOCK over-expression. When CLOCK was over-expressed in vivo, liver triglyceride and total cholesterol were reversed and hepatic steatosis was attenuated where the transcription factor SREBP1 signaling was down-regulated. In conclusion, SREBP1 signaling is a down-stream target of CLOCK deeply involved in regulating the natural MAFLD development. Graphical In natural development of high-fat diet-induced metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), dysregulation of lipid metabolism genes by SREBP1 was driven by down-regulation of hepatic circadian locomotor output cycles kaput (CLOCK). In vivo and in vitro manipulation of hepatic CLOCK negatively regulated SREBP1 and reversed the lipid storage in mouse and human models. Thus, SREBP1 acts as a downstream target of the hepatic CLOCK, which mediates the exacerbation of MAFLD development.

Circadian clocks orchestrate temporal regulation of diverse physiological processes, including innate immunity and oxidative stress responses. However, the molecular mechanisms by which core clock components modulate immune tone and redox homeostasis remain elusive. Here, the circadian transcription factor CLOCK (CLK) is identified as a key regulator of oxidative stress resistance in Drosophila melanogaster . Loss of clk significantly enhances survival under oxidative stress, accompanied by constitutive activation of innate immune pathways. Mechanistically, the RNA-binding protein Achilles (ACHL) is identified as a critical downstream effector of CLK. Indeed, CLK drives rhythmic transcription of Achl , and ACHL post-transcriptionally represses the NF-κB homolog Relish by promoting its mRNA degradation, thereby limiting immune overactivation. Disruption of this regulatory cascade, through loss of either clk or Achl , leads to increased Relish abundance, excessive immune gene expression, and enhanced oxidative stress resistance. Genetic suppression of Relish reverses these phenotypes, establishing a functional CLK–ACHL –Relish axis that links circadian output to immune restraint. Importantly, this regulatory mechanism is evolutionarily conserved, as Clock -deficient mammalian cells exhibit increased resistance to oxidative injury. Together, the findings uncover a post-transcriptional immune checkpoint controlled by circadian networks, linking immune quiescence with redox adaptation.

We report a visual chronometric method for the detection of copper(II) ions (Cu2+) using the clock reaction between methylene blue (MB) and hydrazine (N2H4). The addition of Cu2+ greatly accelerates the clock reaction due to the formation of the Cu cluster between Cu2+ and N2H4. By recording the change of the reaction time and solution color, different concentrations of Cu2+ in buffer and environmental water have been detected. As low as 300 nM Cu2+ can be visually identified by the naked eye without the assistance of any advanced instruments. This visual chronometric assay shows a dynamic range from 0.2 to 16 μM with a limit of detection of 20 nM. Additionally, it has good selectivity toward Cu2+ and against other common metal cations.

The evaporation efficiency of solar-driven interfacial steam is significantly affected by the diurnal variations in solar irradiance and is further compressed by the absence of light. This work proposes a wood-based interfacial evaporator with an auxiliary heat mode to achieve round-the-clock operations. The device was constructed using sustainable, cost-effective in-situ Ni-P electroless plating followed by hole drilling and surface graphite spray-coating. The self-floating evaporator achieves an evaporation rate of 2.20 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 Sun illumination and 2 V input in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The realized rate can be attributed to the localized interfacial heat induced by the electroless-plated Ni-P alloy (R sheet = 1.45 Ω/sq). Moreover, adopting the novel hierarchical advantages, including mesoporous nature, low anisotropic thermal conductivity of wood, and reduced evaporation enthalpy in Ni-P film (1893 J/g), the device further reaches a daytime evaporation yield of 8.47kg m −2 on cloudy days and 14.68 kg m −2 on sunny days, respectively. And a yield of 5.33 kg m −2 with an electrical energy input of ∼ 0.71 kW m −2 is recorded during nighttime. This performance implies a significant step towards wood-based evaporators for round-the-clock water harvesting and shows potential for upscaling devices to all-weather 3D evaporators.

Without light at night, the system for photocatalytic degradation of refractory organic pollutants in aquatic environments based on free radicals will fall into a dormant state. Hence, a round-the-clock photocatalyst (CCN@SMSED) was prepared by in situ growth of cyanide-deficient g-C 3 N 4 on the surface of Sr 2 MgSi 2 O 7 :Eu 2+ ,Dy 3+ through a simple calcination method. The CCN@SMSED exhibits an outstanding oxidative degradation ability for refractory tetracycline (TC) in water under both light and dark conditions, which is attributed to the synergistic effect of free radical (•O 2 − and •OH) and non-radical (h + and 1 O 2 ). Electrochemical analyses further indicate that direct electron transfer (DET) is also one of the reasons for the efficient degradation of TC. Remarkably, the continuous working time of the round-the-clock photocatalyst in a dark environment was estimated for the first time (about 2.5 h in this system). The degradation pathways of TC mainly include demethylation, ring opening, deamination and dehydration, and the growth of Staphylococcus aureus shows that the process is biosafe. More importantly, CCN@SMSED holds significant promise for practical application due to its low energy consumption and suitability for removing TC from a variety of complex water bodies. This work provides an energy consumption reference for the practical application of round-the-clock photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Photocatalytic degradation of water pollutants and pathogenic microorganisms works only under sunlight illumination. Herein, Janus nanomotors (NMs) integrate “round-the-clock” self-electrophoretic motion and self-built electric field-enhanced photocatalytic degradation of estradiol and E. coli for environmental remediation. ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ (ZGC) nanodots are deposited on silica-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs), and Janus IO/Si@ZGC-Au NMs are constructed by sputter-coating with Au caps on one side, while mannose is grafted on the Au layer to obtain IO/Si@ZGC-Au-Man. Au layers effectively suppress electron-hole re-combination to improve the photocatalytic production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the generation of self-built electric field produces self-electrophoretic force to drive NM locomotion. In addition, the excited electrons are stored in the defects of ZGC and then slowly released and transferred to the Au cap, generating persistent self-electrophoretic force and degradation capability in the dark. Mannose-modified IO/Si@ZGC-Au-Man NMs increase bacterial capture in the dark and then promote bactericidal efficacy by photocatalytic ROS generation when reillumination. The magnetic cores make it easier to recycle NMs and remove dead bacteria, and the recovered NMs retain the capabilities of active motion and photocatalytic efficacy. Thus, the self-built electric field and long afterglow of IO/Si@ZGC-Au Janus NMs achieve fuel-free light-powered motion and “round-the-clock” ROS generation for environmental remediation.

Solar-driven water splitting for hydrogen production is a pivotal technique for sustainable energy conversion. However, its efficiency is constrained by intermittent solar irradiation and rapid charge recombination. To overcome these limitations, designing a round-the-clock photocatalyst with high charge storage capacity that can still operate effectively under low light flux after sunset and promote charge carrier separation is a promising strategy. Herein, by selecting SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ /Dy 3+ persistent phosphors as electron-trapped centers and g-C 3 N 4 semiconductor as visible-light photocatalyst, SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ /Dy 3+ @g-C 3 N 4 composite has been successfully synthesized via in-situ growth strategy to form a conventional type II heterojunction photocatalyst. Benefiting from the excellent ability of charge storage and release from electron traps and the improved electron-hole separation efficiency, the designed round-the-clock photocatalyst exhibits the improved hydrogen production from 153.8 μmol g −1 h −1 to 560 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible-light irradiation, infrared-light-driven H 2 production of 932 μmol g −1 for 3 h and a dark activity of 269.1 μmol g −1 h −1 lasing for 0.5 h. This work provides a promising strategy for designing a highly efficient photocatalyst for wide-spectral-responsive and all-weather photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Probiotics have shown potential for alleviating circadian disruption, but efficient screening models for identifying effective strains are lacking, and the mechanisms by which probiotics modulate circadian disruption and related diseases require further investigation. In this research, we developed an in vitro screening model targeting clock gene expression and identified Bifidobacterium longum CCFM1238 as an effective strain for alleviating circadian disruption in sleep-deprived mice. B. longum CCFM1238 exhibited a rhythm-regulating effect similar to melatonin in vitro and alleviated both intestinal and hypothalamic clock gene disruption (Bmal1, Clock, Per3, Cry1 and Rev-erbα) in sleep deprivation-induced circadian disruption mice. Further studies showed that B. longum CCFM1238 reduced inflammatory cell infiltration in colonic tissue, increased colonic goblet cell numbers, and repaired sleep deprivation-induced intestinal inflammation. In cognitive ability tests, B. longum CCFM1238 ameliorated spatial recognition and memory deficits induced by circadian disruption and attenuated extensive microglial activation in the hippocampal region. Additionally, B. longum CCFM1238 increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Akkermansia, Alistipes, and Bifidobacterium) and modulated levels of key metabolites (sphingosine, adenosine, guanosine, N,N-dimethylglycine, and inosine) strongly associated with key microbiota. These findings suggest that B. longum CCFM1238 may target clock gene expression to alleviate circadian disruption and modulate the gut microbiota to provide neuroprotection and gut barrier protection against circadian disruption.

A visual chronometric assay for glutathione (GSH) and cysteine (Cy) is reported based on a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-catalyzed clock reaction of methylene blue and hydrazine. The blue MB is reduced to colorless leucomethylene blue (LMB) by hydrazine in the presence of AuNPs as the nanocatalysts, and it is again oxidized back to MB by oxygen under shaking. Therefore, a periodic oscillation is observed between blue MB and colorless LMB. However, when GSH or Cy is added to the clock reaction system, the catalytic activity of AuNPs decreases because of the inhibition of the formation of gold-hydride species, leading to a long reaction time from MB to LMB. The chronometric assay displays a good linear range of 10 to 330 μM for GSH and 20 to 400 μM for Cy, respectively. The limit of detection is estimated to be 8 and 10 μM at a 3σ, respectively. Different concentrations of GSH/Cy can be visually detected by observing the height of the blue solution under different reaction time points. In addition, the present assay shows good selectivity, and it is successfully applied for detecting GSH/Cy in fetal bovine serum.

The intermittent nature of solar irradiation limits the continuous application of semiconductor photocatalysis. Herein, a recyclable carbon nanofiber/V 2 O 5 /g-C 3 N 4 composite membrane is designed and fabricated through electrospinning and controlled carbonization, integrating photocatalytic function with electron-storage capability. The composite achieves 94.7% tetracycline degradation under light and retains 83.5% efficiency in the dark, surpassing the performance of its powder counterpart. The enhanced activity is attributed to promoted charge separation and the reversible V 5+ /V 4+ redox activity for electron storage. The composite exhibits excellent reusability and structural stability, maintaining high activity over five consecutive cycles without noticeable structural change, outperforming conventional powder catalysts in cycling durability. Mass spectrometry reveals distinct degradation pathways under light and dark conditions. This work provides a stable and easily retrievable membrane material for sustainable, continuous water purification.

In order to achieve efficient degradation of organic pollutants (OPs) and to avoid interference from co-existing anions and natural organic matter, a synergistic CDs-BiO 1-x Cl/PS system is designed, which is capable of functioning under both dark and visible-light-controlled conditions, enabling round-the-clock operation. A novel nano photocatalyst CDs-BiO 1-x Cl was constructed by modifying the surface oxygen vacancy (O v ) rich bismuth oxychloride (BiO 1-x Cl) with carbon quantum dots (CDs). The key role of the edge carbon atoms (C) of CDs in CDs-BiO 1-x Cl photocatalyst for PS (persulfate) activation was revealed. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, In-situ Raman, quenching experiments and density functional theory (DFT) analysis indicated that the C-edge atoms in the photocatalyst acted as an electron donor which facilitated the complexes formation with PS under dark conditions, and the complexes participated in organic pollutants degradation via electron transfer (non-free radical) pathways subsequently. The system cleverly utilizes the “on-off” of light to achieve the controlled triggering of free radical and non-free radical pathways for PS activation. Upon light irradiation, photogenerated carriers migrate toward CDs, promoting further decomposition of its surface complexes to produce sulfate radicals (·SO 4 - ). Hence, this optimized light-controlled synergistic system showed complete removal of BPA (10 mg/L) in the presence of 2 mM PS within 15 min via free radical and non-free radical pathways. The visible-light-driven system did not produce any toxic byproducts and showed excellent stability under various reaction conditions. Therefore, the round-the-clock and photo-switching-regulated high-efficiency CDs-BiO 1-x Cl/PS system demonstrates promising application prospects for removing organic pollutants in complex water bodies.
