The service life of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) in calcium magnesium aluminosilicate (CMAS) and molten salt environments has become a key factor in determining engine reliability and safety. The effect of interface roughness (bond coating surface roughness) on the CM (CMAS + molten salt (Na 2 SO 4 + NaCl + NaVO 3 )) corrosion resistance of electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) TBCs is investigated. The addition of molten salts lowers the melting point of CM, leading to more severe destructive effects compared to single CMAS corrosion. Moreover, the 1200# specimen (Ra = 2.0 μm) exhibits the best resistance to CM corrosion. The adjustment of interface roughness significantly alters the microstructure of the top-ceramic coating and induces changes in crack patterns after CM corrosion. Therefore, appropriately reducing interface roughness is key to improving the isothermal CM corrosion resistance and high-temperature CM corrosion-induced thermal shock performance of TBCs.

Molten deposits originating from siliceous debris such as airborne dust, sand, or volcanic ash entrained into the intake air, represent a critical threat to the durability of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). Such systems are usually approximated experimentally by on calcium-magnesium aluminosilicate melts (CMAS). While extensive studies have elucidated CMAS corrosion from the terrestrial sources listed above, the role of sea salts – ubiquitous in costal environments – remains unclear. Here, we investigate the effect of sea salt from four China sea regions on CMAS corrosion of TBCs. By integrating high-temperature wetting behavior, microstructural analysis and first-principles calculation, we demonstrate that the presence of sea salt accelerates TBC degradation and that its concentration governs its impact on CMAS melt fluidity, spreading, and degradation of TBCs. An optimized CMAS model is proposed to guide future corrosion assessments and design TBCs with improved tolerance to salt-accelerated degradation under coastal service conditions.

The study examined the CMAS corrosion behaviour of ytterbium disilicate EBCs using Raman imaging before and after annealing. Annealing transformed the coatings to crystalline, healing pores and cracks, and reducing corrosion depth and rate. Raman spectroscopy showed increased residual stresses with corrosion time, while sprayed coatings had lower stresses and higher susceptibility to damage. This research enhances the use of Raman spectroscopy in non-destructively characterizing EBCs degradation under CMAS conditions, offering insights for aeroengine combustion chamber design improvements.

Thermal barrier coatings with excellent thermal performance and corrosion resistance are essential for improving the performance of aero-engines. In this paper, (Y 3-x Yb x )(Al 5-x Sc x )O 12 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) thermal barrier coating materials were synthesized by a combination of sol-gel method and ball milling refinement method. The thermal properties of the (Y 3-x Yb x )(Al 5-x Sc x )O 12 ceramics were significantly improved by increasing Yb and Sc doping content. Among designed ceramics, (Y 2.8 Yb 0.2 )(Al 4.8 Sc 0.2 )O 12 (YS-YAG) showed the lowest thermal conductivity (1.58 Wm −1 K −1 , at 800 °C) and the highest thermal expansion coefficient (10.7 × 10 −6 K −1 , at 1000 °C). In addition, calcium-magnesium- aluminum -silicate (CMAS) corrosion resistance of YS-YAG was further investigated. It was observed that YS-YAG ceramic effectively prevented CMAS corrosion due to its chemical inertness to CMAS as well as its unique and complex structure. Due to the excellent thermal properties and CMAS corrosion resistance, YS-YAG is considered to be prospective material for thermal barrier coatings.

Calcium–magnesium–alumina–silicate (CMAS), as an environmental deposit, deposits on engine components and causes serious damage to traditional thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) at high temperatures. The rare-earth silicate apatite dense reaction layer is regarded as a promising strategy to prevent TBCs from molten CMAS penetration and corrosion. The interactions between the Gd2O3ceramic and CMAS are discussed at various temperatures and times in the study. The main reaction products are gadolinium silicate apatite (Ca2Gd8(SiO4)6O2, Gd-apatite) and melilite phases. Within the first 15 min of interaction, a thin, continuous and dense reaction layer (DRL) consisting of Gd-apatite comes to form, and it thickens with increasing exposure temperature and time. The thickness of the DRL is ~0.8 μm after 15 min of the reaction at 1250 °C and it slowly increases to ~9.1 μm after a duration of 24 h at 1400 °C. This is attributed to CMAS infiltration along the grain boundaries of the Gd-apatite phases in the DRL. The growing rates of the Gd-apatite DRL decrease with reaction time and are significantly influenced by the temperature and the ability of the DRL to inhibit CMAS infiltration.

Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) with excellent chemical resistance and good high-temperature stability are of great significance for their applications in next-generation turbine engines. In this work, a new type of high-entropy fluorite-structured oxide (Ce 0.2 Hf 0.2 Y 0.2 Pr 0.2 Gd 0.2 )O 2− δ (HEFO-1) with different Ti 4+ contents were successfully synthesized. Minor addition of Ti 4+ could be dissolved into a high-entropy lattice to maintain the structure stable, effectively reducing the phase formation temperature and promoting the shrinkage of bulk samples. Heat treatment experiments showed that all the samples remained a single phase after annealing at 1200–1600 °C for 6 h. In addition, high-entropy (Ce 0.2 Hf 0.2 Y 0.2 Pr 0.2 Gd 0.2 Ti 0.2 x )O 2− δ demonstrated great resistance to calcium—magnesium—alumina—silicate (CMAS) thermochemical corrosion. When the content of Ti was increased to x = 0.5, the average thickness of the reaction layer was about 10.5 after being corroded at 1300 °C for 10 h. This study reveals that high-entropy (Ce 0.2 Hf 0.2 Y 0.2 Pr 0.2 Gd 0.2 Ti 0.2 x )O 2− δ is expected to be a candidate for the next-generation EBC materials with graceful resistance to CMAS corrosion.

Hydrophobic surfaces are pivotal for self-cleaning, anti-icing, and corrosion resistance. Developing hydrophobic LaYbZrCeO 7 thermal barrier coating (TBC) offers an effective strategy to mitigate adhesion and corrosion induced by molten CMAS. In this paper, a periodic tip array with an average diameter of 100 μm and height of 45 μm was fabricated on LaYbZrCeO 7 TBC using femtosecond laser processing. Compared to the original coating, the periodic tip array increased non-polar C C bonds by 14.35 % and decreased polar C-O-C, O-C=O, and -OH bonds by 7.26 %, 7.09 %, and 19.66 %, respectively, thereby reducing the surface polarity. Additionally, droplets form a “solid-gas-liquid” three-phase contact with the periodic tip array, reducing solid-liquid interaction and enhancing hydrophobicity. The average contact angles on the LaYbZrCeO 7 tip array and original coating were 145.2° and 58.4°, respectively, demonstrating the array's hydrophobicity. In addition, the contact angle between the periodic tip array and molten CMAS is 59.6°, which is significantly higher than the original coating's 19.6°.These results offer novel insights into enhancing the resistance of LaYbZrCeO 7 TBC against adhesion and corrosion from molten CMAS.

In marine gas turbines, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) experience severe degradation due to the combined presence of CMAS (CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 ) deposits and sea salt. This study investigates the synergistic corrosion behavior of NaCl and CMAS on YSZ at 1300 °C. Results demonstrate that high-temperature Na + /Ca 2+ ion exchange elevates the local Ca/Si ratio, promoting Ca 3 ZrSi 2 O 9 formation and calcium diffusion into ZrO 2 grains. This process stabilizes the cubic phase and fundamentally shifts the corrosion pathway from standard dissolution-reprecipitation to accelerated grain boundary penetration. Corrosion tests reveal that a 50 wt% NaCl and 50 wt% CMAS mixture exhibits the highest aggressiveness, resulting in a penetration depth of 56.25 μm in 8YSZ after 10 h. These findings identify a salt-accelerated CMAS degradation mechanism driven by rapid ion exchange, offering critical insights for designing next-generation corrosion-resistant marine TBCs.

The materials which have low thermal conductivity , a good match of coefficient of thermal expansion with SiC-based ceramics matrix composites (CMCs) and excellent resistance against calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) are suitable candidates for thermal/environmental barrier coating. To fulfil the above requirements we developed a new multicomponent rare earth (Y 0.2 Dy 0.2 Er 0.2 Yb 0.2 Ho 0.2 ) 2 Si 2 O 7 or (5RE 0.2 ) 2 Si 2 O 7 high entropy ceramics pyrosilicate by a single step solid solution method. The x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis revealed that the as-fabricated bulk composite (5RE 0.2 ) 2 Si 2 O 7 has a single phase β-type structure match well with single rare earth ytterbium disilicate (Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 ) and the different rare earth oxides mixed well with each other. The excellent coefficient of thermal expansion (4 × 10 −6 -5 × 10 −6 °C −1 ) and ultra-low thermal conductivity (0.7–1.6 W/m C) was observed as compared to other single and multicomponent high entropy ceramics composites. The (5RE 0.2 ) 2 Si 2 O 7 ceramics pyrosilicate show an excellent CMAS resistance at various temperatures (1300, 1400, and 1500) °C for 4 h compared with single principle RE disilicates. The above all mentioned results identify that this material is a suitable candidate for coating on the SiC-based ceramics composite for thermal/environmental barrier coating.

With the development of high power and high thrust-weight ratio aeronautics and astronautics, aircraft engines and gas turbine technology, the development of thermal barrier coating (TBCs) material is an enormous challenge, which requires both high temperature stability and resistance to molten calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) corrosion. In this study, five high-entropy rare-earth tantalate (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 (Re=Y, Gd, Dy, Ce, Sm, La, Yb) ceramics were prepared by high temperature solid state reaction. The phase composition, microstructure, thermophysical and mechanical properties and CMAS corrosion resistance of the obtained high-entropy (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics were systematically investigated. The as-prepared five high-entropy rare-earth tantalate (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics had monoclinic structure and uniform composition. The five (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics all had lower Young’s modulus (135.06∼158.63 GPa), Vickers hardness (3.7∼6.2 GPa), fracture toughness (2.30-2.80 MPa·m 1/2 ) and brittleness index (1.45-2.53 μm –1/2 ) than that of YSZ. The thermal expansion rate and thermal expansion coefficients of the five (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics were close to each other but showed higher value than that of single RETaO 4 (RE= Gd, Dy, Sm or Y) and lower value than that of YSZ. The thermal diffusivities and thermal conductivity of the five (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics were lower than that of YSZ, YTaO 4 and GdTaO 4 at all temperature. During molten CMAS corrosion, CMAS melt diffused into the (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics and then corroded (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 grains, thereby forming a corrosion area composed of reaction layer and penetration layer. The CaO in penetrated CMAS melt could react with Ta element in (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics to generate Ca 2 Ta 2 O 7 in the reaction layer and reduce the content of CaO in the penetrated CMAS melt, which increased the viscosity of the CMAS melt and inhibited the further penetration of CMAS into the ceramics. Based on the obtained results, the CMAS corrosion of (5RE 0.2 )TaO 4 ceramics was primarily controlled by the Ca 2 Ta 2 O 7 formation and the CMAS penetration.

As a thermal barrier coating (TBC) material, 8 wt% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) exhibits poor resistance against calcium–magnesium–aluminosilicate (CMAS) corrosion. This is caused by the penetration of molten CMAS glass and the depletion of Y 3+ , which limits the lifetime of 8YSZ. In this study, a multi-rare-earth-oxide-doped zirconia (15 wt% (Lu 0.2 Yb 0.2 Dy 0.2 Gd 0.2 Y 0.2 )–ZrO 2 , denoted as 15LYDGY–SZ) ceramic was prepared to examine its interaction with CMAS. The sluggish diffusion effect and the competition between various dopant elements toward reaction with CMAS effectively slow down the atomic diffusion and limit the transformation of tetragonal phase into monoclinic phase in 15LYDGY–SZ ceramic. Compared with the currently used 8YSZ ceramic, the corrosion resistance of 15LYDGY–SZ to CMAS and its retention rate of fracture toughness after CMAS corrosion are improved. The results show that the multi-rare-earth-oxide-doped zirconia ceramic prepared in this study is a promising candidate material for the development of future TBCs.

Thermal/Environmental barrier coatings (T/EBCs) operating in environments laden with siliceous debris are increasingly vulnerable to degradation from molten calcium‑magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) deposits. As a promising ceramic coating material, the microstructure evolution and thermochemical interaction of dysprosia stabilized zirconia (DySZ) with CMAS attack at 1250 °C were systematically investigated. The results indicate that CMAS preferentially corrodes the DySZ from their grain boundary. The inherent grain boundary segregation characteristics of solute Dy atoms provided a convenient channel for grain boundary corrosion. The thermochemical reaction between DySZ and CMAS leads to DySZ destabilization, which carried out through in-situ phase transformation and dissolution-recrystallization processes. It is proposed that improving DySZ corrosion resistance can be achieved by introducing pentavalent stabilizers to reduce Dy segregation or promoting the crystallization precipitation kinetics of CMAS. These findings may contribute to laying the foundation for the material design of ceramic surface layers in long-life T/EBCs systems.
