Membrane fouling is one of the main impediments that limit the wide application of Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. In this study, for the first time, we incorporated the cellulose nanocrystal (CNCs) onto Cu-MOF-74 by physical stirring and then coated the composites on the PVDF membrane to ameliorate the antifouling performance. The PVDF membrane with the addition of CNC/Cu-MOF-74 composite showed enhanced hydrophilicity compared with the pristine membrane, which significantly promoted the permeability and antifouling performance. The Bovine serum albumin (BSA) multiple-cycle antifouling results revealed that the flux recovery ratio (FRR) value (76.9 %) was much higher than that of the pristine membrane (60.8 %). The enhancement of recovery flux was correlated with the increased electrostatic repulsion and hydrophilicity of the modified membrane according to the contact angle test and Zeta-potential measurement. Meanwhile, the CNC/Cu-MOF-74 modified membrane showed improved antibacterial efficiency (96.3 % at 4 h) due to the predominant antibacterial efficacy of Cu-MOF-74. The efficiently antibacterial achievement of modified membrane was attributed to the release of Cu 2+ and the generation of •OH. This study proposed a novel modified membrane with excellent antifouling properties and provided new insights into the fabrication of antifouling membranes with outstanding performance.

Low concentrations of gelatin (0.02–0.20 wt%) were applied to regulate the surface and interface properties of CNC (0.50 wt%) by forming CNC/G complexes. As gelatin concentration increased from 0 to 0.20 wt%, the potential value of CNC/G gradually changed from −44.50 to −17.93 mV. Additionally, various gelatin concentrations led to micromorphology changes of CNC/G complexes, with the formation of particle interconnection at gelatin concentration of 0.10 wt%, followed by network structure and enhanced aggregation at gelatin concentration of 0.15 and 0.20 wt% respectively. The water contact angle (25.91°-80.23°) and interface adsorption capacity of CNC/G were improved due to hydrophobic group exposure of gelatin. When gelatin concentration exceeded 0.10 % at a fixed oil phase volume fraction (75 %), a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) stabilized by CNC/G can be formed with a good storage stability. The rheological and microstructure results of HIPE confirmed that low gelatin concentration can assist CNC to form stable emulsion structure. Especially, the auxiliary stabilization mechanism of various gelatin concentration was different. CNC/G-0.10 % and CNC/G-0.15 % stabilized HIPE mainly depended on the enhanced interface adsorption and network structure, while CNC/G-0.20 % stabilized HIPE mainly relied on enhanced interface adsorption/accumulation due to weak electrostatic repulsion and aggregate granular morphology of CNC/G-0.20 %.

It is still a challenge to prepare a water- and polymer-based electrospun air filter film with high efficiency filtration, low pressure drop, and good mechanical properties. To address this issue, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was employed as the main material, mixing polyethyleneimine (PEI), bamboo-based activated carbon (BAC) and cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) to construct the air filter film by electrostatic electrospinning. In this system, the negatively charged BAC and CNC are fixed in the system through bonding with the positively charged PEI, showing a double adsorption effect. One is the mechanical filtration of the porous network structure constructed by PVA@PEI electrospun nanofibers, and the other is the electrostatic adsorption of PM2.5 on the surface of BAC and CNC. It is significant that the resulting composite air filter displays a high filtration efficiency of 95.86%, a pressure drop of only 59 Pa, and good thermal stability. Moreover, the introduced methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) endows it with good water-resistance. Given these excellent performances, this system can provide theoretical and technical references for the development of water- and polymer-based electrospun air filter film.

Living organisms in nature can sensitively perceive environmental stimuli and respond through rapid adaptive deformation. Inspired by this functionality, self-sensing hydrogel actuators have been developed, offering broad potential in areas such as information encryption, flexible wearables, and human–machine interfaces. Here, we report a versatile strategy for fabricating self-sensing hydrogel actuators with simultaneously high electrical conductivity and excellent mechanical durability. A robust interpenetrating network is constructed between surface-functionalized MXene nanomonomers (T-MXene) and modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-Vi), which markedly enhances the stability of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) hydrogel. In addition, incorporation of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) further enhances the composite’s electrical conductivity while simultaneously improving the environmental adaptability. The resulting hydrogel exhibits high conductivity (14.92 S m–1), remarkable strain sensitivity (GF of 2.17 to 7.23), and outstanding durability. Leveraging these features, we realize reliable information encryption and storage, as well as wearable motion sensors capable of sensitive and precise motion detection. Moreover, the hydrogel system serves as an excellent platform for constructing high-performance self-sensing actuators. By inducing a gradient alignment of T-MXene/CNC-Vi under a direct-current (DC) electric field, we develop a shape-programmable hydrogel actuator that combines rapid responsiveness, remote light-driven actuation, and intrinsic self-sensing capability. This study not only provides a paradigm for designing advanced tactile and self-sensing materials but also establishes a foundation for achieving closed-loop, remotely controlled soft actuators for next-generation intelligent mechanical systems.

As natural polysaccharide, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) provide a sustainable, bio-based nanophotonic platform, and have received considerable attention in recent years. Despite much research, regulating the microstructure of assembled CNC photonic crystals to optimize their versatile chiroptical properties remains challenging. A facile dynamic assembly strategy that can combined with traditional adjusting methods is established to prepare flexible, iridescent CNC-based photonic composite films with a unique Janus surface structure. Because the dynamic assembly of CNC photonic crystals occurs in vortex, this strategy enhances the oriented degree of order, and endows the films with a smooth lower surface and an undulant upper surface, with an interwoven interior composed of inherent left-handed nematic phases and twisted right-handed helical fibers induced by vortex. This unique structure combination results in extraordinary nonreciprocal chiroptical capability based on the opposite faces of the composite films characterized by dual circularly polarized reflection, nonreciprocal circular dichroism (CD), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with asymmetry factors (g lum ) close to 0.1 for the upper surface and − 0.4 for lower surface. This work provides new insights for preparing versatile CNC-based photonic functional materials. Emergent nonreciprocal CPL behavior without chiral enantiomers is of significance for the design and development of next-generation optoelectronic devices.

Piezoresistive sensors hold promising prospects in various fields such as health monitoring, human–computer interaction, and robot sensing. To meet diverse application requirements, the development of multifunctional piezoresistive sensors possessing high sensitivity, mechanical robustness, and thermal insulation properties is imperative. In this study, we report the fabrication of a high-performance MXene-based aerogel, denoted as MXene/CNC/WPU, via unidirectional freeze-casting of cellulose nanocrystals, waterborne polyurethane, and Ti3C2Tx MXene, facilitated by hydrogen bonding. The resulting three-dimensional interconnected layered microstructure imparts the MXene/CNC/WPU aerogel-based piezoresistive sensor with remarkable features including high piezoresistive linear sensitivity (224.42 kPa–1), exceptional mechanical stability (up to 500 compressing cycles), and rapid response time (0.15 s), along with the ability to withstand compression strains of up to 80% (corresponding to 42 kPa). Furthermore, the piezoresistive sensor demonstrates real-time detection capabilities for various human physiological signals such as swallowing, blowing, finger and wrist bending. Moreover, the MXene/CNC/WPU aerogel, with a thickness of 1.5 cm, exhibits outstanding thermal insulation performance, generating a temperature gradient of approximately 150 °C at 210 °C. These remarkable attributes underscore its potential applications in health monitoring and high-temperature protection.

To achieve high mechanical strength electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials for practical application, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), as a reinforcing and dispersing agent, are intercalated into reduced graphene oxide (RGO) layers, forming an ultrathin, robust, flexible, and hydrophobic CNC/RGO film with a highly ordered nacre-like layered structure via a self-assembly process. The layered structure significantly shortens the reduction time and improves the mechanical strength and shielding effectiveness (SE) of the resultant CNC/RGO composite film. The controlled preparation of CNC with different aspect ratios is realized by using separated bamboo fiber and parenchyma. The CNC of the fiber with a higher aspect ratio and lower diameter results in a lower porosity, denser structure, and more uniform distribution in the composites, and therefore a higher electrical conductivity and SE. The highest SE (39.1 dB) and specific SE (11 367 dB cm2 g−1) with a high tensile strength (179 MPa) and water contact angle (106°) of the CNC/RGO film are obtained at 10 wt% CNC loading with a film thickness of 12 μm. The maximum tensile strength of the composite film reaches 227 MPa with 30–50% CNC. The ultrathin high-performance CNC/RGO film shows significant potential as an EMI shielding material in the aerospace and flexible electronics fields.

Enrofloxacin (ENR), characterized by its remarkable stability and resistance to degradation, has become a significant contaminant in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, a CNC/UiO-66(Fe) composite was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method, and response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the key experimental conditions for the efficient removal of ENR from aqueous solutions. The incorporation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) improved the dispersibility and stability of UiO-66, and significantly enhanced the crystallinity of the material, as confirmed by XRD analysis. Iron (Fe) doping introduced additional active sites and defects, synergistically enhancing the overall adsorption capacity. The composite exhibited a high BET surface area of 1294.81 m 2 /g and a well-developed porous structure. The adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic, fitting well with both the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Under alkaline conditions, the material showed excellent adsorption performance, with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 275.84 mg/g for ENR at 25°C and pH 10. The adsorption mechanism involved multiple synergistic interactions, including electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, metal coordination, and pore filling. Furthermore, CNC/UiO-66(Fe) exhibited excellent stability and reusability, retaining over 80% of its removal efficiency after five cycles. This study provides an effective and sustainable approach for remediating antibiotic contaminants in aquatic environments.

The poor compatibility between biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) and poly (propylene carbonate) (PPC) limits the blends' performance and hinders agricultural applications. In this study, hydrophobically modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-DDA) were prepared and incorporated into the PLA/PPC blend as nano-compatibilizers to improve the multi-scale structure of the blend for enhancing properties. CNC-DDA was uniformly dispersed at the PLA/PPC interface and in PLA, reducing PPC dispersed phase size and forming interfacial hydrogen bonds to enhance interfacial interactions. Furthermore, the CNC-DDA acted as effective heterogeneous nucleating agents, highly improving PLA's crystallization properties, including crystallinity, crystallization rate, and crystal size. Enhancements in morphology, interface, and crystallization multi-scale structure synergistically contributed to a significant increase in the tensile strength and elongation at break of the PLA/PPC blend, with improvements of approximately 93.9% and 43.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the incorporation of CNC-DDA improved the barrier property and biodegradability of the blend while maintaining favorable light transmittance. The excellent integrative properties of the PLA/PPC/CNC-DDA composite promoted cherry radish growth. This study presents a valuable and effective approach for enhancing polymer blend compatibility, offering new prospects for designing high-performance biodegradable agricultural mulching films.

Endometriosis (EM) results in pelvic adhesions and chronic inflammation, which significantly reduce embryo implantation and the clinical pregnancy rates of in vitro fertilization (IVF), affecting 190 million women worldwide. Traditional hormonal and surgical treatments alter ovarian and endometrial function, thereby hindering IVF. An urgent need exists for a localized treatment strategy that does not interfere with IVF procedures, aiming to enhance endometrial receptivity. To address this, we developed an innovative localized drug delivery system that simultaneously targets immune dysregulation and enhances endometrial function. This study reports a dual-drug delivery system based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) combined with nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) for the local release of levonorgestrel (LNG) and botropase (BTP) to reprogram uterine natural killer cells and treat EM, overcoming previous drawbacks. The experimental results confirm stable CNC and PNIPAM structures and controlled the release of the composite drug. At concentrations of 0.5 mg/L LNG and 100 mg/L BTP, the release system achieved the highest CD16 – /CD16 + ratio and the most pronounced upregulation of autophagy-related molecules in uNK cells in our in vitro assays, indicating a shift in uNK cells toward an immune-tolerant state. In a mouse model of EM, the CNC–PNIPAM drug delivery system significantly improve endometrial receptivity. The CNC–PNIPAM drug delivery system demonstrates the medical potential of the local release of composite drugs, offering a new immunomodulatory approach for the treatment of EM and broader medical applications.

Introducing inorganic thermal fillers into organic polymers is the major solution to increase thermal conductivity (TC), but typically at the expense of optical transparency. Fabrication of transparent thermally conductive polymers remains a great challenge today. In this work, negatively charged and highly crystalline cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are introduced into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Owing to their closely matched refractive indices, the prepared CNC/PVA composites exhibit enhanced TC and reduced loss of optical transparency. The CNC/PVA composite with 75 wt% CNC loading shows cross-plane TC of 0.33 W m −1 K −1 (1.74 times that of pristine PVA) while retaining 77% of the original transparency of PVA at 600 nm. Addition of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) further improves the thermal and optical properties of CNC/PVA composites. With 0.5 wt% CTAB, the composite has a significantly enhanced cross-plane TC of 0.92 W m −1 K −1 (4.84 times that of pristine PVA), while preserving 96% of original PVA transparency at 600 nm. Comparative studies using neutral and anionic surfactants suggest that the improvement in TC by CTAB is probably due to the promoted CNC network formation by cations. Highlights CNC/PVA composite with cross-plane TC of 0.92 W m −1 K −1 and 85% transmittance is prepared. Matched RI between CNC and PVA is the key for transparency of the composite. CTAB can further increase the TC due to cationic-promoted network formation.

In this work, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) was modified by an ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy) system based on quadruple hydrogen bondings, and CNC-UPy was obtained. Then, this powder was added into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and PVA/CNC-UPy composite membranes and hydrogels were prepared. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and particle size distribution (PSD) were used to characterize CNC-UPy. From the FTIR results, the characteristic peaks of NCO group sat 2270 cm−1disappeared, indicating the successful synthesis of CNC-UPy. XRD results showed that the modification by UPy may change the structure of CNC and its degree of crystallinity was increased. PSD analysis showed that the particle size of CNC was increased and its size distribution became narrower after modification by UPy groups. The structure and properties of the composite membranes and hydrogels were studied by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) together with investigation of swelling, sustained release and self-healing performances. DSC curves depicted that the glass transition temperature, Tg, of different PVA membranes was increased with addition of different proportions of CNC-UPy. TGA data showed that the temperature of maximum weight loss rate was increased, which illustrated the enhanced thermal stability of PVA/CNC-UPy composites. Meanwhile, it was also revealed that the PVA/CNC-UPy composite hydrogels possess good self-healing and better sustained release behavior for the soil conditioner, fulvic acid (FA).Keywords:cellulose nanocrystal;polyvinyl alcohol;supramolecular interactions;soil conditioner;properties
