MOF-derived CNFs@Co/C fibers with adjustable cavity size for efficient electromagnetic wave absorption

Hongwei Zhou,Ying Lin,Yongzhen Ma,Zhao Meng,Keyuan Cheng,Haibo Yang

Multi-component design for constructing heterogeneous interfaces has emerged as a key strategy to optimize electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. However, precise structural control during heterogeneous interface construction remains a significant challenge. In this study, CNFs@Co/C fibers with tunable cavity size were prepared by coaxial electrospinning and heat treatment. Abundant heterogeneous interfaces between CNFs and metallic Co particles significantly enhance interfacial polarization. The impedance matching of CNFs@Co/C fibers can be effectively tuned by regulating the cavity size. Optimized impedance matching helps more EMWs enter the material and be lost. The results demonstrate that CNFs@Co/C fibers with an appropriate cavity size exhibit outstanding EMW absorption capabilities, attaining a maximum reflection loss of −56.63 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 7.84 GHz. Furthermore, the radar stealth performance of the samples was assessed through simulations conducted under far-field conditions. The radar cross section (RCS) value of CNFs@Co/C-2 is less than -10 dB m2 over the entire test range, and the maximum RCS attenuation at θ = 0° could reach 24.09 dB m2. This study provides essential guidance for the development and production of lightweight materials featuring a hollow structure for advanced EMW absorption applications.

Electrospinning-based construction of porous Mn3O4/CNFs as anodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Ye Li,Yan Song,He Wang,Wensheng Yu,Jinxian Wang,Xiangting Dong,Guixia Liu,Qianli Ma

Transitional metal oxide nanoparticles and carbon composites have attracted tremendous research interest due to their potential as anode materials in next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, porous Mn3O4/carbon nanofibers (Mn3O4/CNFs) are designed and synthesized via electrospinning in combination with an in situ growth method followed by subsequent multi-step heat treatments. As an anode for LIBs, Mn3O4/CNFs-2 exhibits good cyclability with high reversible capacity. A reversible capacity of 754 mA h g−1 over 400 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g−1 is achieved. The presence of CNFs can improve the conductivity of the electrode material and relieve the volume expansion of Mn3O4 during the process of Li+ insertion and extraction. Meanwhile, a small amount of N atom doping can enhance the reaction kinetics and Li+ pseudocapacitive behavior while providing reversible capacity and long cycling performance. Quantitative analysis shows that mixed diffusion-controlled and capactive behavior control mechanisms account for the Li+ storage, wherein the pseudocapacitive behavior can contribute to additional capacity.

Rationally designed hierarchical porous CNFs/Co3O4 nanofiber-based anode for realizing high lithium ion storage

He Wang,Yan Song,Yanwei Li,Mengwei Wang,Qianli Ma,Wensheng Yu,Dan Li,Xiangting Dong,Jinxian Wang,Guixia Liu

To achieve a high power density of lithium-ion batteries, it is essential to develop anode materials with high capacity and excellent stability. Cobalt oxide (Co3O4) is a prospective anode material on account of its high energy density. However, the poor electrical conductivity and volumetric changes of the active material induce a dramatic decrease in capacity during cycling. Herein, a hierarchical porous hybrid nanofiber of ZIF-derived Co3O4 and continuous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) is rationally constructed and utilized as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The PAN/ZIF-67 heterostructure composite nanofibers were first synthesized using electrospinning technology followed by the in situ growth method, and then the CNFs/Co3O4 nanofibers were obtained by subsequent multi-step thermal treatment. The continuous porous conductive carbon backbone not only effectively provides a channel to expedite lithium ion diffusion and electrode transfer, but also accommodates volume change of Co3O4 during the charge–discharge cycling process. The electrode exhibits a high discharge capacity of 1352 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles at a constant current density of 0.2 A g−1. Additionally, the composites deliver a discharge capacity of 661 mA h g−1 with a small capacity decay of 0.078% per cycle at a high current density of 2 A g−1 after 500 cycles. This hierarchical porous structural design presents an effective strategy to develop a hybrid nanofiber for improving lithium ion storage.

Fabrication and performance of self-healing ONR composites via a CNFs/LA synergistic reinforcement strategy

Junyi Mao,Hui Pan,Shilong Xue,Ting Zhang,Haijiao Xu,Changhong Luo,Hailan Jin

Rubber-based functional materials frequently exhibit deficiencies in mechanical strength, tensile properties, self-healing efficiency, and sensing capabilities. This study employed oxidized natural rubber (ONR) as a matrix, integrating lipoic acid (LA) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) to establish a dynamic cross-linked network characterized by dynamic disulfide bonds and multiple hydrogen bonds. Coating the surface with ONR/LA/CNFs/CNT to create a conductive layer enables the detection of both minor and significant deformations. A flexible strain sensor was developed, demonstrating precise detection capabilities for various deformations, a high elongation at break of 419.58 %, moderate tensile strength of 1.72 MPa, and a gauge factor (GF) of 17.07.The sensor displays structural stability and responsiveness, along with a self-repair rate of 95.93 % within 0.5 h at 80 ℃, thereby ensuring durability and reliability. It effectively monitors human movement signals, presenting a promising solution for sustainable and repairable smart wearable devices.

Hierarchical ZnCo CNFs@CNTs as High-Performance Bifunctional Air Electrodes for Rechargeable Zinc–Air Batteries

Zhixin Wang,Yingjie Chen,Likai Jin,Fanzhen Kong,Beili Pang,Qian Zhang,Jianguang Feng,Liyan Yu,Lifeng Dong

Carbon-based bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with rationally designed architectures are essential for high-performance rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs), yet the concurrent optimization of catalytic activity, durability, and mass transport remains challenging. Herein, hierarchical ZnCo carbon nanofibers/carbon nanotubes (CNFs@CNTs) are fabricated via single-nozzle electrospinning followed by melamine-assisted pyrolysis under a ZnCl2-regulated atmosphere. During thermal treatment, Co species embedded within carbon nanofibers catalyze in situ carbon nanotube growth, while ZnCl2vapor modulates the carbonization process and surface chemistry, collectively generating a hierarchical CNFs@CNTs architecture with high surface area and abundant exposed active sites. As a result, ZnCo CNFs@CNTs exhibit outstanding bifunctional ORR/OER activity, surpassing Zn-free and Co-free counterparts. Combined structural and electrochemical analyses reveal that the synergistic interaction between Co active centers and Zn-assisted carbon structural regulation enhances reaction kinetics and long-term stability. When implemented as air electrodes in rechargeable ZABs, ZnCo CNFs@CNTs deliver high power density, reduced charge–discharge polarization, and excellent cycling durability, demonstrating strong practical applicability. This work presents an effective strategy for constructing hierarchical CNFs@CNTs composites via electrospinning and dual-component thermal regulation, offering new insights into the design of high-efficiency bifunctional air electrodes for advanced ZABs.

Peng Li,Dongting Huang,Junsheng Huang,Jingjie Tang,Pingjun Zhang,Fei Meng

A novel kind of magnetic porous carbon nano-fibers (Fe 3 O 4 @P-CNFs) materials was successfully prepared and used as an adsorbent. Based on the above-mentioned adsorbent, a simple and effective magnetic disperse solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method was developed and first utilized to the enrichment and purification of five Sudan dyes (including Sudan I, Sudan II, Sudan III, Sudan IV, and Sudan Red 7B) in foodstuffs for the first time. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to determine the content of the Sudan dyes. The parameters affecting the extraction performance were studied and optimized, including the amount of the adsorbent and inorganic salt, type and the volume of the eluent, pH of the sample solution and extraction time. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the results show that the proposed method has a good linear relationship (r≥ 0.9993). The limits of detection range from 0.88 μg L −1 to 1.27 μg L −1 . The recoveries range from 86.6% to 99.7% with the relative standard deviations ranging from 0.6% to 7.9% in the methodology validation. The above-mentioned results indicate that the proposed method is a sensitive and reliable procedure with good reproducibility for the detection of Sudan dyes residues in foodstuffs.

Fabrication of Co/C@CNFs/GO Aerogels with Directional Channel Structures for Broadband Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Hongwei Zhou,Ying Lin,Yongzhen Ma,Zhao Meng,Haibo Yang

To obtain high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials with a broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB), structural design has proven to be an effective strategy. In this investigation, Co/C@carbon nanofibers (Co/C@CNFs) derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were integrated with graphite oxide (GO) nanosheets, and Co/C@CNFs/GO aerogels were prepared through unidirectional freeze-drying followed by heat treatment. The resulting aerogels exhibit a unique directional channel structure that increases their contact area with air, thereby improving impedance matching. The Co/C@CNFs/GO aerogels demonstrate exceptional EMW capabilities, primarily due to the multiple heterogeneous interfaces and the synergistic electromagnetic loss mechanisms generated by the interactions among GO nanosheets, CNFs, and Co particles. The results reveal that Co/C@CNFs/GO-2 achieves remarkable EMW absorption with a maximum EAB of 10.0   GHz, covering both the X and Ku bands, thanks to its directional channel structure and complete conductive network. Moreover, the aerogels exhibit excellent radar cross-section attenuation and superior thermal insulation. This work provides a reliable strategy for synthesizing multifunctional carbon-based aerogels materials with efficient EMW absorption, offering broad potential for applications in electromagnetic protection, thermal management, and related fields.

Jing Li,Caiming Jiao,Jinghui Zhu,Liubiao Zhong,Tuo Kang,Sehrish Aslam,Jianyong Wang,Sanfei Zhao,Yejun Qiu

Lithium-sulfur battery is desirable for the future potential electrochemical energy storage device with advantages of high theoretical energy density , low cost and environmental friendliness. However, some natural hindrances, particularly fast capacity degradation resulting from the migration of dissolved polysulfide intermediates, remain to be significant challenges prior to the practical applications. In this work, a composite interlayer of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) which are enriched by Co-based metal organic frameworks (ZIF-67) growth in-situ is exploited. Notably, physical blocking and chemical trapping abilities are obtained synergistically from the ZIF/CNFs interlayer, which enables to restrain the dissolution of polysulfides and alleviate shuttle effect. Moreover, the three-dimensional fiber networks provide an interconnected conductive framework between each ZIF microreactor to promote fast electron transfer during cycling, thus contributing to excellent rate and cycling performance. As a result, Li-S cells with ZIF/CNFs interlayer show a high specific capacity of 1334 mAh g −1 at 1 C with an excellent cycling stability over 300 cycles. Besides, this scalable and affordable electrospinning fabrication method provides a promising approach for the design of MOFs-derived carbon materials for high performance Li-S batteries.

Engineering electron distribution of Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs p–n heterojunction nanozyme: boosting the Fenton reaction efficiency

Shiwen Zhao,Lintao Yang,Jinggao Wu,Shipeng Qi,Yaojie Liu,Honglei Tian,Jianke Li,Yuhuan Zhang

Nanozymes with high efficiency, stability, and cost-effectiveness hold great potential for various applications. However, their use in Fenton reactions is limited by the rate-limiting step of Fe3+ reduction. Herein, oxygen vacancy-rich Cu2O/FeOx p–n heterojunction on carbon nanofibers (Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs) is developed to boost Fenton reaction efficiency. The heterojunction structure harnesses a built-in electric field to facilitate charge carrier separation, with Cu+ serving as the electron donor for accelerating the reduction of surface-generated Fe3+. Meanwhile, Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs encourages abundant lattice defects, creating ample catalytic sites and oxygen vacancies. Theoretical insights revealed that the defect-rich property well regulated the electron distribution at the atomic level, driving the adsorption–desorption process and accelerating Fenton reaction kinetics. As such, Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs demonstrates an affinity for H2O2 up to 200 times that of natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and a Vmax 3.40 times higher. The CNFs used as the support well confine Cu2O/FeOx, endowing Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs with high stability and biocompatibility, and fast mass transport. The strong intrinsic magnetic properties of Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs contribute to recyclability. Finally, Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs is successfully employed in efficient pollutant degradation and antibacterial applications, offering new insights into the rational design of nanozymes with desired properties.

CNFs@ZIF-8 hybrid nanofibers with ultrahigh adsorption capacity for malachite green: preparation and adsorption performance

Zheng Guo,Hekai Zhang,Yunfei Song,Minghuan Wang,Jiying Wang,Qing Miao,Peng Wei,Li Yin

The development of efficient adsorbents for removing toxic organic dyes from wastewater remains a critical challenge in environmental remediation. Herein, novel carbon nanofibers (CNFs) supported ZIF-8 hybrid composite (CNFs@ZIF-8) was synthesized via an in-situ growth method and evaluated for its malachite green (MG) adsorption performance. The composite exhibited a porous structure with a high specific surface area (1154.18 m 2 /g) and abundant functional groups, enabling exceptional adsorption capacity (2384.13 mg/g). Systematic studies revealed that the adsorption mechanism involved synergistic electrostatic interactions, π-π stacking, with the process fitting the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Remarkably, CNFs@ZIF-8 demonstrated pH-responsive selectivity toward cationic dyes, achieving removal efficiencies of >90 % for MG, methylene blue (MB), and rhodamine B (RhB), while showing minimal affinity for anionic methyl orange (MO). Thermodynamic analysis confirmed the spontaneous (ΔG 0  < 0) and endothermic (ΔH 0  = 71.49 kJ/mol) nature of adsorption. The composite maintained structural stability over five regeneration cycles, highlighting its potential for sustainable wastewater treatment. This work provides a strategy to overcome the limitations of pure MOFs by integrating carbon substrates, offering a multifunctional adsorbent with scalable applications in addressing complex dye-polluted effluents.

Efficient piezocatalytic removal of BPA and Cr(VI) with SnS2/CNFs membrane by harvesting vibration energy

Wenrou Tian,Jiahao Qiu,Najun Li,Dongyun Chen,Qingfeng Xu,Hua Li,Jinghui He,Jianmei Lu

Piezocatalysis that converts mechanical energy into chemical energy plays an important role in environmental purification and energy regeneration. In this work, a piezoelectric membrane of carbon nanofibers coated by few-layers SnS 2 nanosheets , a typical layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), for the first-reported piezocatalysis of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) and bisphenol A (BPA). A boosted removal efficiency of Cr (VI) and BPA under ultrasonication are 3 and 4 times higher than that under illumination, respectively, which is attributed to the built-in electric field and band bending derived from the piezoelectricity of SnS 2 as well as the outstanding electronic liquidity of CNFs substrate. It was also found that the most oxidizing ·OH can be generated in SnS 2 /CNFs for piezocatalytic oxidative degradation of BPA compared to the absence of ·OH under illumination. Finally, the possible piezocatalytic mechanism of SnS 2 /CNFs is proposed. So it provides a new view on piezocatalysis of TMDs for environmental remediation by collecting mechanical energy.
