A novel combined process of MFPAC coagulation and mineralized refuse adsorption for landfill leachate pretreatment

Zhanmeng Liu,Xian Li,Lichun Xu,Rongrong Liu

ABSTRACT A novel composite coagulant of MFPAC was prepared from Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and polyaluminum chloride (PAC). Landfill leachate was pretreated by MFPAC coagulation combined with mineralized refuse adsorption. Higher COD and color removals were achieved by using the MFPAC magnetic coagulant than by adding the coagulant PAC alone. Under the working conditions of 1:3 Fe 3 O 4 /PAC mass ratios, 1.5 g/L MFPAC dosage, and pH 7.5, the removal rates of COD and color reached 63% and 67%, respectively. Infrared spectra showed that MFPAC is a type of hydroxyl-containing ligand with a nano-Fe 3 O 4 multi-core and a hydroxyl polymer of aluminum and iron that is similar complex valence and crystal structure as that of PAC. The effluent of MFPAC coagulation was further treated using mineralized refuse adsorption. Under the working conditions of <2 mm particle size of mineralized refuse, 700°C roasting temperature, 40 mg/L adsorbent dosage, and pH 9.0, the removal rates of COD and ammonia nitrogen reached up to 57% and 68%, respectively, after 12 h of treatment. Infrared spectra analysis revealed that OH, C=O, and C–O played key roles in the adsorption process. After the landfill leachate was treated with the combined process, the removal rates of COD, color, and ammonia nitrogen were enhanced to 84%, 80%, and 74%, respectively. The encouraging results demonstrated that the combined process could provide a viable alternative to the pretreatment of landfill leachate.

Preparation of amine-modified silica foams and their adsorption behaviors toward TNT red water

Shuchen Tu,Fengzhu Lv,Pan Hu,Zilin Meng,Hongtao Ran,Yihe Zhang

Secondary and primary amines containing silica foams (F–SiO 2 ) were prepared by using silane coupling agents, (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (KH-550) and bis(3-triethoxysilicyl propyl)-amine (KH-270), as modifiers. Not only Brunauer–Emmett–Tell (BET) surface and pore size of F–SiO 2 are greatly reduced after modification, but also increased chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency to trinitrotoluene (TNT) red water is obtained. Among the series of F–SiO 2 , the secondary amine modified silica foams possess higher COD removal capacity. Controlled experiments indicate the adsorption mainly derives from the attraction of amine groups toward the negative organic pollutants in TNT red water rather than the effect of the large BET surface and hydroxyl groups on the surface of F–SiO 2 . The adsorption model studies show the pseudo-second-order dynamic adsorption model and Langmuir isotherm model well fit the experimental data. The prepared amine-modified F–SiO 2 is an efficient adsorbents of organic pollutants in TNT red water.

Electrochemical Oxidation of Rhodamine B: Optimization and Degradation Mechanism

Qizhou Dai,Lei Jiang,Xubiao Luo

Titanium based lead dioxide electrodes were successfully prepared by the method of electrodeposition in nitrate solution, including titanium base, Sn-SbO X interlayer, α-PbO 2 middle layer and β-PbO 2 active layer. Rhodamine B (RhB) was selected as the model pollutant to optimize the effects of operational factors in the electrochemical oxidation process. The removal of RhB and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were detected at different reaction time and the relative optimized results were achieved on condition of the concentration of supporting electrolyte, initial RhB concentration, pH value and applied current density at 0.1 mol/L, 200 mg/L, 4.4, and 20 mA/cm 2 , respectively. The kinetics results on RhB removal indicated that RhB degradation by electrochemical oxidation followed the pseudo- first-order reaction. Besides, UV-vis spectra revealed that the conjugated structure of RhB was easier and prior to be degraded. The intermediates generated in the solution were identified by GC/MS and a possible degradation pathway of RhB was proposed.

Efficient treatment of starch wastewater through metallic-starch complexes and magnetic flocculation

Junhao Fu,Zhifeng Zhang,Guanshuo Han,Haisheng Han,Ruohua Liu,Liqiang Zeng,Jianhua Kang,Tong Yue

Starch wastewater poses significant environmental harm, necessitating the implementation of effective treatment methods. The current starch wastewater treatment methods have some drawbacks, such as limited application scenarios, complicated process and insufficient purification efficiency. This study focuses on the purification of starch wastewater through metallic-starch complexes (MSCs) and magnetic flocculation . Metal ions (Fe 3+ , Pb 2+ and Al 3+ ) were added to interact with starch and coagulate, forming MSCs, in which the O 6 atom of the branched chain methanol most likely to interact with metal ions. Then, the magnetic particles, sintering dust (SD), was utilized to adsorb the MSCs and form magnetic flocs, facilitating their rapid settlement under an external magnetic field. The purification experiments were aimed at a high-concentration starch wastewater with COD concentration of 12,000 mg/L, and the results demonstrated the metal ions could effectively coordinate with starch and form MSCs, achieving a COD removal rate of over 90%. Meanwhile, to address the challenge of difficult settlement of MSCs, the addition of SD induced the magnetic flocculation with MSCs through Van der Waals force and electrostatic force , which effectively reduced settling time and decreased sedimentation layer thickness. The combined use of MSCs and magnetic flocculation achieved efficient purification of starch wastewater.

Enhancement of the flavor and functional characteristics of cod protein isolate using enzyme-microbe system

Zheng-Fei Yan,Jia-Yu Chen,Jing Yang,Shuai Yuan,Xue-Yi Qiao,Bo Xu,Lingqia Su

Cod protein isolate (CPI), a by-product from the cod machining process, is a novel source of high value-added products. Off-flavors in cod protein, such as bitterness and fishy odor, reduce its acceptability for consumers. Here, CPI was first debited using Streptomyces canus aminopeptidase (ScAPase) and then deodorized through probiotic fermentation. This is the first report of completely removing the bitterness of CPI using ScAPase. Subsequently, Syn3 and Syn4, as aromatic CPI (ACPI), were prepared from debittered CPI (DCPI) using Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum, respectively, possessing non-fishy odor, no bitterness, strong aromatic odor, and good overall acceptance. These products (DCPI and ACPI) exhibited better physicochemical properties, such as higher oil-holding capacity, emulsifying activity, and digestion resistance, compared to untreated CPI. However, they showed significant differences in radical scavenging activity, and the highest scavenging activity was detected in Syn3 against DPPH· (63.5%) and·OH (79.2%), DCPI against O2- (32.0%), and post-digestion Syn4 against ABTS+· (95.2%). These products after digestion treatment, significantly promoted the proliferation of probiotics. Notably post-digestion Syn4 exhibited the most proliferation effect on Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium breve than other post-digestion samples. These results indicated that the treated CPI has potential for applications in health food products.

Residual chemical oxygen demand (COD) fractionation in bio-treated coking wastewater integrating solution property characterization

Cong Wei,Hengping Wu,Qiaoping Kong,Jingyue Wei,Chunhua Feng,Guanglei Qiu,Chaohai Wei,Fusheng Li

The refractory nature of residual COD in bio-treated coking wastewater (BTCW) creates barriers for its further treatment and reclamation. It is necessary to fractionate the residual COD in BTCW associated with characterization of solution properties. In this paper, a stepwise process composed of membrane filtration , coagulation, adsorption and ozonation was proposed to fractionate residual COD in the BTCW, in which the COD was stepwise reduced to near zero. In addition, the correlation between COD and water quality indexes as well as solution properties were discussed together with a safety assessment of the water quality. Results showed that the residual COD fractionation percentage contributed by suspended solids, colloids, dissolved organics and reductive inorganic substances in the BTCW was 43.7%, 22.1%, 26.2% and 4.9%, respectively. By stepwise fractionating of these substances, the residual COD was reduced from 168.8 to 5.2 mg L −1 , and the UV 254 value decreased from 1.90 to 0.15 cm −1 . In addition, the particle size of the dominant substances contributing to the residual COD was smaller than 450 nm. Among these substances, the hydrophobic fraction accounted for 78.66% (in the term of TOC). Three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) analysis showed that hydrophobic neutral substances (HON) were the main fluorescence constituent in the BTCW, which was highly removable by adsorption. The residual COD after adsorption was mainly composed of reductive inorganic substances . Apart from pursuit of high COD removal rates, more emphasis should be given to the removal of toxic COD. Correlations were observed between the residual COD and water quality indicators as well as solution properties, providing a guideline for optimized removal of residual COD in the BTCW. In summary, these results gave a referential information about the nature of residual COD in the BTCW for the selection of advanced treatment technologies and the management of water quality safety.

Pyrite-activated persulfate oxidation and biological denitrification for effluent of biological landfill leachate treatment system

Siying Sun,Jiabao Ren,Jiale Liu,Liang Rong,Hangli Wang,Yeyuan Xiao,Faqian Sun,Rongwei Mei,Chongjun Chen,Xiaomei Su

The feasibility of pyrite as catalysts in the persulfate oxidation and electron donor for subsequent bacterial denitrification was investigated. The results demonstrated that pyrite-activated persulfate oxidation could efficiently degrade the organic matter in the effluent of biological landfill leachate treatment system, and COD removal efficiency of about 45% was achieved at the optimum parameters: pH = 6, pyrite dosage = 9.28 mM, dimensionless oxidant dose = 0.25. Among the dissolved organic matter , hydrophobic dissolved organic carbon (HO DOC), humic acids and building blocks were the main components. After the pyrite-activated persulfate oxidation, humic acids and HO DOC were primarily degraded, followed by building blocks, while low molecular weight neutrals were probably the degradation products . In the subsequent biological process, nitrate reduction was satisfactorily accomplished with autotrophic denitrification as the main pathway. When the influent nitrate concentration was about 180 mg L −1 , the effluent nitrate concentration was stable below 20 mg L −1 with the nitrogen removal rate of about 108 mg L −1 d −1 . To sum up, the pyrite-activated persulfate oxidation and the following biological denitrification was a feasible application in the effluent of biological landfill leachate treatment system.

Application of electrochemical flow-through oxidation technology in the treatment of concentrated water from nanofiltration and reverse osmosis in the coal chemical industry

Ning Liu,Xin Zhao,Can Wang,Yanchao Li,Shuang Pan,Weiqi Huang,Israel Hakizimana,Wei Kong,Yan Wang

In the coal chemical industry, the concentrated waters produced by nanofiltration and reverse osmosis are usually evaporated and crystallized. During the evaporation crystallization process, high COD levels can lead to problems such as the entrainment of liquid droplets and excessive amounts of mother liquor. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop efficient, stable, and engineering-applicable organic matter degradation technologies before the evaporation crystallization process. In this study, Ti-ENTA/SnO 2 -Sb and GF-5 were combined as cathodes to form an electrochemical flow-through oxidation system to treat nanofiltration concentrate (NFCs) and reverse osmosis concentrate (ROCs). The experimental results show that within the current density range of 10–20 mA·cm −2 , the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rates of NFCs and ROCs are 55.3 %–85.2 % and 49.9 %–93.6 %, respectively. And the oxidation system can be used stably for a long time, fully meeting the practical application needs. In addition, this article further analyzed the effects of current density, initial organic matter concentration, pH value, and electrode spacing on COD removal. The results indicate that the COD removal efficiency is mainly affected by current density and initial organic matter concentration. Finally, a comprehensive comparison was made on the efficiency and cost of various advanced oxidation technologies in treating wastewater. The results indicate that the electrochemical flow-through oxidation system has significant cost advantages. The cost of processing NFCs and ROCs per cubic meter is $0.96 and $1.23, respectively. These findings indicate that the electrochemical flow-through oxidation system proposed is an advanced oxidation technology with economic benefits and practical application prospects.

Ozonation catalyzed by cerium supported on activated carbon for the degradation of typical pharmaceutical wastewater

Qizhou Dai,Jiayu Wang,Jun Chen,Jianmeng Chen

The catalyst of cerium supported on activated carbon (Ce/AC) for ozonation was prepared and the catalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of p- toluenesulfonic acid ( p- TSA). The results showed that Ce/AC catalyst could not only greatly enhance the degradation of p- TSA but also significantly increase the efficiency of COD removal by ozonation. The COD removal could reach 74.1% with the Ce/AC catalyst at 60   min, while the effects of activated carbon (AC) catalyst and without catalyst were only 62.4% and 50.8%, respectively. The superiority of Ce/AC catalyst was attributed to the fact that cerium increased the generation of hydroxyl radicals ( OH), which could react with p- TSA and intermediate to form oxidized products rapidly. Based on the intermediates detected by GC/MS, IC and HPLC, a possible degradation pathway of p- TSA was proposed. Our aim is to provide basic data and theoretical support for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment by catalytic ozonation.

Structure-dependent regulation of cod protein interfacial behavior and interfacial proteome by lipid oxidation-derived aldehydes

Qianru Chen,Ting-qi Yang,Leiyan Wu,Beiwei Zhu,Wei Gong

Lipid oxidation-derived aldehydes altered cod protein interfacial behavior. • Aldehyde structure regulated protein adsorption and interfacial rheology. • Proteomics revealed aldehyde-driven changes in protein interfacial film formation. Lipid oxidation is a common phenomenon in aquatic multi-interface food systems, and the reactive aldehydes generated are considered key factors affecting protein functionality and system stability. However, existing studies have primarily focused on bulk phase, leaving a lack of systematic understanding of how lipid oxidation-derived aldehydes with varying structures regulate protein interfacial behavior and interfacial-enriched protein composition. This study systematically investigated the effects of different lipid oxidation-derived aldehydes on the oil-water interfacial behavior and interfacial-enriched protein composition of cod protein (CP). Interfacial adsorption kinetics and extensional rheological analyses revealed that aldehyde structure significantly influences protein diffusion, penetration, and rearrangement at the interface. Among these, 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE), characterized by its hydrophobic long chain and reactive functional groups, exhibited stronger interfacial regulatory capacity compared to acrolein (ACR), significantly enhancing protein adsorption and reshaping the viscoelastic properties of interfacial films. Furthermore, we innovatively conducted untargeted quantitative proteomics analysis of interfacial-enriched protein and non-adsorbed protein in the simulated system, revealing that CP exhibits distinct selective adsorption characteristics at the oil-water interface. HNE treatment increased the abundance of interfacial-enriched protein and significantly altered interfacial-enriched protein composition, whereas ACR primarily disrupted the equilibrium of protein distribution between the interface and the aqueous phase. GO enrichment analysis indicated that the differentially regulated proteins were mainly associated with membrane targeting, protein localization, and myofibril assembly. These results suggest that lipid oxidation-derived aldehydes synergistically regulate the formation of CP interfacial films through structure-dependent protein modification and interfacial enrichment effects, providing new insights into the oxidative instability mechanisms in aquatic product. Immobilized Microorganisms for Targeted Release in COD Reduction of Oilfield Wastewater and Heavy Oil Viscosity Reduction

Yuning Gong,Houfeng He,Haoran Zheng,Ce Shang,Tian Feng,Yibo Yang,Hongyang Wang,Jiu Zhao

Under the dual-carbon policy, the extraction of heavy oil faces significant challenges. Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR), with its sustainability and environmental friendliness, continues to hold a pivotal position. This study proposes an immobilized carrier material (SA/L hydrogel microspheres) capable of targeted microbial release. By leveraging the hydrogel properties of sodium alginate (SA) and the oil solubility of lecithin, the composite material encapsulates microorganisms and is fabricated into microspheres. These microspheres are applicable for reducing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) in oilfield wastewater and decreasing the viscosity of heavy oil, thereby enhancing heavy oil recovery. Positive experimental results indicate that the inoculation of Bacillus subtilis is most efficient at 5%–7%, with an optimal pH range of 6.5–7.0, salinity not exceeding 5000 ppm, and a temperature around 40°C. COD reduction experiments reveal that with SA/L hydrogel microspheres, a mere 5% inoculation rate can achieve a reduction exceeding 60%, and a 7% inoculation rate can surpass 80%. Viscosity reduction experiments for heavy oil demonstrate that with SA/L hydrogel microspheres, a 5% inoculation rate can achieve a viscosity reduction rate of up to 81.6%, with the greatest reduction in saturated hydrocarbons followed by aromatic hydrocarbons. Finally, experiments confirm a recovery enhancement of 23.0%, indicating that SA/L hydrogel microspheres as immobilized carriers are significant.

Removal of COD from Secondary Effluent Using Fenton Iron Sludge-Based Biochar/Fe(VI)/H2O2 Process

Lia Wang,Xu He,Lan Liang,Yanshan Wang,Beibei Yan,Guanyi Chen,Ning Li,Li’an Hou

The conventional Fenton process generates large amounts of Fenton sludge during wastewater treatment. Achieving effective utilization of Fenton sludge and reducing its production remain pivotal challenges. In this study, Fenton sludge biochar catalysts (Cat) were prepared using Fenton sludge via pyrolysis. In addition, chemical oxygen demand (COD) from secondary effluent was removed by Fenton sludge biochar catalysts activated with H2O2/Fe(VI). Specifically, the removal efficiency of COD could reach 46.2% in the Cat−2/H2O2/Fe(VI) system under weakly alkaline conditions. The mechanistic analysis confirmed that high-valent iron,•OH, O2•−, and1O2all participate in the degradation process. Furthermore, a continuous-flow reactor was applied to treat secondary effluent, with COD decreasing from 65 mg/L to 36 mg/L. This study provides new insights into the resource utilization of Fenton sludge and the treatment of complex wastewater.
