Defect engineering has emerged as a powerful strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance. In this paper, a novel dual-defect 1T-WS 2 /Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S (WS v /CZS v ) Schottky heterojunction was successfully fabricated via a combined solvothermal-hydrothermal approach. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) confirmed the presence of dual sulfur vacancies. The optimized WS v /CZS v composite exhibits exceptional hydrogen evolution performance, achieving a remarkable rate of 3060.63 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which are 9.83 and 2.54 times higher than that of pure CZS and CZS v , respectively. Notably, the catalyst maintained over 90 % of its initial activity after four consecutive photocatalytic cycles, demonstrating superior stability. Comprehensive characterization through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), steady-state photoluminescence (PL), and transient photocurrent measurements revealed that the dual-defect system significantly enhances carrier separation efficiency. This improvement arises from three synergistic effects: electron-trapping capability of dual defect sites, elevated Schottky barrier, and superior electrical conductivity of the 1T-WS 2 . Furthermore, the metallic characteristics and sulfur vacancies in 1T-WS 2 synergistically provide abundant active sites for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution on both basal planes and edges. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the dual defects optimize charge distribution and achieve an ideal hydrogen adsorption free energy. The energy band alignment and charge transfer mechanism were systematically investigated using Mott-Schottky (M-S) analysis and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). This work explores the synergistic interactions between different types of sulfur defects and provides new insights into the coupling of defect engineering.

For enhanced photocatalytic performance of visible light responsive CdZnS, a series of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S solid solutions were fabricated by different methods. It was found that the semiconductor obtained through the precipitation-hydrothermal method (CZS-PH) exhibited the highest photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 2154 μmol h −1 g −1 . The enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production of CZS-PH was probably due to stacking fault formation as well as narrow bandgap, a large surface area and a small crystallite size . Based on this, carbon nanotubes modified with Cu 2+ (CNTs (Cu)) were used as a cocatalyst for CZS-PH. The addition of CNTs (Cu) enhanced notably the absorption of the composites for visible light. The highest photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of the Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S-CNTs (Cu) composite was 2995 μmol h −1 g −1 with 1.0 wt.% of CNTs (Cu). The improvement of the photocatalytic activity by loading of CNTs (Cu) was not due to alteration of bandgap energy or surface area, and was probably attributed to suppression of the electron-hole recombination by the CNTs, with Cu 2+ anchored in the interface optimizing the photogenerated electron transfer pathway between the semiconductor and CNTs. We report here the successful combination of homojunction and heterojunction in CdZnS semiconductor, which resulted in promotion of charge separation and enhanced photocatalytic activity.

In this work, we successfully prepared composites of carbon-modified in-phase MoC–Mo2C (MoC–Mo2C@C, MMC) nanosheets with Cd0.5Zn0.5S (ZCS) nanorods. The loading of MMC nanosheets significantly improved the hydrogen production rate of ZCS nanorods. The results showed that the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of ZCS is the highest when MMC nanosheets are 1 wt% of ZCS nanorods (1-MMC/ZCS), reaching 68.8 mmol h−1 g−1, which is 7.7 times that of pure ZCS nanorods. The 1-MMC/ZCS photocatalyst was measured with Na2S/Na2SO3 as a hole sacrifice reagent under irradiation with 420 nm monochromatic light, and the quantum efficiency of 1-MMC/ZCS was 32.9%. The carbon layer can promote the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons, and in-phase Mo2C–MoC as the active site can synergistically improve the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of ZCS. Most Mo2C-based materials are still used in the field of electrocatalysis. This study provides a new idea for exploring new molybdenum-based co-catalyst materials in the field of visible light catalytic hydrogen production.

The direct photocatalytic production of H2O2 from water and air offers a sustainable route to decarbonize the energy-intensive anthraquinone process. However, its efficiency remains limited by sluggish exciton dissociation and rapid charge carrier recombination, typically requiring sacrificial agents that compromise the process economics. Herein, we design Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanoparticles with symmetry-broken atomic arrangements by modulating crystallinity, an intrinsic material property. This modulation generates numerous localized dipole fields. These fields actively promote exciton dissociation and direct charge carrier migration, boosting charge utilization. As a result, the optimized catalyst achieved an H2O2 yield of 1.36 mmol g–1 h–1 using only dissolved O2 as the electron acceptor and without additional sacrificial agents. The role of the dipole fields in promoting exciton dissociation and charge separation has been unequivocally demonstrated through Kelvin probe force microscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence, and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. This work establishes crystallinity-mediated dipole engineering as an effective strategy for carrier management in photocatalytic systems beyond conventional crystalline materials.

S-scheme heterojunction structure can endow the photocatalysts with high-performance photo-degradation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) since it can remain the photogenerated electrons/holes with stronger redox ability. Herein, an integrative S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst building from Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S nanoparticles and BiOCl microflowers with oxygen vacancies (OVs) was developed. Moreover, the in-situ grown process ensures the firm contact and intense electron coupling between BiOCl and Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S. As a result, Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S/BiOCl exhibited a significant reinforcement of photo-activity and stability for the abatement of antibiotic norfloxacin, manifesting a 2.8-fold or 9.6-fold enhancement compared to pristine Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S or BiOCl. Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S/BiOCl also shows good resistance to alkaline, sodium salts and humic acid. The performance of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S/BiOCl to photocatalytically degrade other PPCPs with different molecular structures was further confirmed. At last, the ability of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S/BiOCl for PPCPs de-toxicity was verified by evaluating the toxicity of norfloxacin and its degradation intermediate. This study demonstrates a new S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyt for efficient removal of PPCPs as well as provides some insights into developing high-performance metal sulfide solid-solution-based S-scheme heterojunctions for water decontamination.

The integration of photocatalytic processes to simultaneously convert plastic waste into valuable chemicals and generate green hydrogen represents a significant advancement in the field of renewable energy and environmental remediation. The study demonstrated the potential of solar-powered photocatalytic processes to convert plastic waste, specifically polylactic acid (PLA), into value-added chemicals like pyruvate while simultaneously producing green hydrogen. The use of a CZS/NiPS 3 heterojunction as a catalyst was pivotal, as it created an efficient interface for electron transfer, enhancing the overall photocatalytic activity. The CZS/NiPS 3 -20 % catalyst exhibited remarkable performance, producing 777.4 mmol/g of hydrogen over 10 h in a pretreated PLA solution. In a real PLA plastic system, the catalyst generated 506.41 mmol/g of hydrogen over the same period, showcasing its practical applicability. The catalyst facilitated the selective photoreforming of PLA into pyruvate, a high-value chemical, as confirmed by GC-MS analysis. This dual functionality-hydrogen production and chemical conversion-maximizes the utilization of photogenerated electrons and holes, improving the overall efficiency of the process. This research offers a strategy to address plastic pollution and boost the hydrogen economy by converting waste into valuable products and using seawater for clean energy.
