The enrichment and recovery of rare earth ions is an effective way to achieve sustainable utilization of wastewater resources. Using a simple ultrasound assisted synthesis method, nano hydroxyapatite (HAP) was introduced into ZIF-67 at room temperature to synthesize HAP/ZIF-67 composite materials with rich functional groups. XRD, FT-IR, SEM, XPS, and BET were used to characterize HAP/ZIF-67 composite materials. The effects of pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, ambient temperature, and initial concentration on the adsorbent were investigated through static adsorption experiments with repeated cycles. The results show that the synergistic effect of the Co–OH, –NH–, –C=N– functional groups in ZIF-67 and the Ca–OH and PO 4 3− groups in nano-HAP improves the adsorption capacity of the composite material. Under the optimal conditions, HAP/ZIF-67 reached saturation of Ce(III) adsorption within 20 min with a maximum adsorption capacity of 461.55 mg/g and an adsorption rate of 92.31%. The adsorption characteristic of Ce 3+ on HAP/ZIF-67 composites is more consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model, which indicate a single-layer, surface-homogeneous chemisorption process for Ce(III) adsorption. The adsorption process is a spontaneous heat absorption process according to thermodynamic research. The main mechanism of HAP/ZIF-67 adsorption of Ce(III) is surface complexation. After four elution experiments, HAP/ZIF-67 adsorbent has good reusability, indicating that HAP/ZIF-67 is a promising adsorbent in the field of rare earth ion recovery.

Efficient separation of rare earth elements (REEs) from leaching tailings is necessary for environmental protection and full utilization of resources. Cell walls are rich in various active groups that can efficiently adsorb REEs. In this work, a series of composite aerogels based on pectin and cellulose (the key active components in cell walls) were fabricated for effective adsorption of Ce (III) from leaching tailings. Physical and chemical properties of composite aerogels were characterized by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), contact angle measuring, and a zeta potentiometer. Adsorption capacity was measured under different conditions. Adsorption corresponded to the Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity of Ce (III) was 337.36 mg/g. Kinetic fitting showed that the adsorption process corresponds to the second-order kinetic model. Composite aerogels have excellent regeneration performance. The adsorption process occurred by electrostatic interaction, ion exchange with –COO − , and chelation with C-NH 2 . Adsorption in a sample of leaching tailings showed that the adsorption efficiency of composite aerogels for Ce (III) and Eu (III) reached 68% and 81%, respectively, demonstrating good practicability.

Under the dual challenges of water eutrophication and phosphorus deficiency, efficient adsorbents are urgently needed to remove and recover excess phosphate. However, the highly regarded cerium-based adsorbent has become the main difficulty limiting its large-scale application due to its high energy consumption and uncontrollable valence state in the synthesis process. To address this issue, we synthesized a composite cross-linked framework adsorbent (CCFA) using a simple coprecipitation method for application as a novel phosphate trap. Due to the realization of 100 % Ce(III) acquisition, CCFA exhibited a high adsorption capacity of up to 289.18 mg-P/g·Ce, 1.5 to 2 times higher than existing cerium-based adsorbents. At the same time, the introduction of sepiolite not only improved the utilization efficiency of the active sites, resulting in a high P/Ce molar ratio of 1.31, but also enhanced the resistance to pH interference, with the adsorption capacity only decreasing by 16.5 % in the presence of strong alkali (pH = 11). In addition, CCFA exhibited a wide range of adaptability, excellent phosphate recovery potential, and the prospect of large-scale application, making it a promising adsorbent for wastewater phosphate.

Antimony (Sb) treatment presents a paradox: oxidizing toxic Sb(III) to Sb(V) for detoxification generates Sb(OH) 6 − species with a large hydration radius (7.36 Å) that hinders adsorption on conventional crystalline adsorbents due to limited accessible sites. We developed a Ce(III/IV)-chitosan semi-crystalline complex with mixed-valence coordination (Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ = 62.3:37.7) that addresses this challenge. Ce coordination constructs a semi-crystalline architecture where amorphous regions provide more accessible sites for large Sb(OH) 6 − while ordered domains maintain structural stability. The mixed-valence system sustained positive surface charge (+25 to +40 mV, pH 2–10) for electrostatic Sb(V) attraction, while Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ cycling catalyzed H 2 O 2 -mediated Sb(III) oxidation. At 2 mg/L Sb, a challenging concentration for industrial wastewater, the material achieved >98% removal within 90 min, reducing residual Sb to <0.04 mg/ L. maximum capacities reached 595.5 mg/g (Sb(V)) and 461.6 mg/g (Sb(III)), with excellent regenerability (>86% after five cycles). This work demonstrates how coordination-induced structural reorganization and mixed-valence chemistry overcome fundamental barriers in mixed-oxidation-state contaminant treatment.

A novel adsorbent (PHPM) was synthesized through the functionalization of N -(2-Hydroxyethyl) acrylamide (HEAA) with phytic acid (PA) and applied for the adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) ions. The material was characterized by means of FTIR, TGA, SEM, and XPS. The present study systematically investigated the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial La(III) or Ce(III) concentration, and pH value on the adsorption capacity. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of PHPM for La(III) and Ce(III) were determined to be 198.0 and 186.2 mg·g −1 , respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, as further confirmed by nonlinear fitting with low RMSE and χ 2 values. Thermodynamic analysis revealed negative Δ G values, positive Δ H and Δ S values, indicating a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-driven process. Furthermore, PHPM demonstrated high adsorption efficiency toward La(III) and Ce(III), even in the presence of competing ions. A preliminary cost analysis indicated that the preparation of PHPM was economically feasible with low cost. The adsorbent maintained approximately 50% of its initial adsorption capacity after ten consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The findings demonstrate that PHPM was a promising adsorbent for the recovery of La(III) and Ce(III) from aqueous environments.

Microextractors are known to provide high mass transfer rates for the extraction and separation of rare-earth elements (REEs). High-throughput microextractors are essential for industrial-scale production of REEs, but few practical studies have been conducted to date. In this work, a chaotic advection microextractor, i.e., a three-stage microextractor, was designed and demonstrated to extract Pr(III) and Ce(III) efficiently from nitric acid media at high throughputs by using 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) and sulfonated kerosene as an extraction agent and a diluent, respectively. Flow visualization experiments showed that the dispersed phase could be effectively broken into small droplets owing to vortex and recirculation flows. Microextraction experiments performed under optimal extraction conditions indicated that at low throughputs, the concentration ratio D , extraction efficiency E , and separation factor β decreased with an increase in the throughput, whereas at high throughputs, D , E , and β increased with an increase in the throughput. An extraction efficiency close to that of co-current balanced extraction was successfully achieved, even at a high total throughput of 100 mL/min and a rather short residence time of 0.029 s. Thus, the chaotic advection microextractor features a high throughput and high extraction efficiency, which are appropriate for the high-efficiency extraction and separation of REEs.

Under the double pressure of eutrophication and phosphorus deficiency, there is an urgent need to remove excess phosphate from wastewater efficiently. Preparing cerium-based materials with excellent application potential inevitably leads to Ce(III) oxidation to Ce(IV), which reduces the phosphate adsorption effect and restricts its development. To solve this problem, we introduced a protective agent and successfully synthesised cerium-modified activated carbon sorbent containing 100 % Ce(III) during the synthesis process. Compared with CeAC without a protecting agent, CeAC-A contained more Ce(III) (100 %) and exchange groups (–OH accounted for 82.76 %), achieving an adsorption capacity of up to 448.57 mg-P/g Ce, improving of 4.3 times. At the same time, the size of the cerium active component was reduced from the micron level to the nanometer level, and the mass transfer rate was significantly improved. In addition, with the enormous specific surface area and well-developed pore structure of activated carbon, it showed high dispersibility, with P/Ce molar ratio as high as 2.03, which is 1.1–4.8 times higher than other cerium-based adsorbents. Phosphate was removed primarily through electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange. In treating municipal wastewater with complex water quality, CeAC-A showed strong selectivity, a wide range of adaptability and easy repeat regeneration, making it a promising adsorbent for phosphate uptake from wastewater.

The degradation of carboxylic acid has been identified as one of the rate-determining steps in the mineralization of organic pollutants by ozonation . In this study, Ce(III)-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Ce–CN) composites with different Ce(III) contents were synthesized and used as catalysts for the ozonation of oxalate. The morphology and structure of the Ce–CN were comprehensively characterized using various techniques such as SEM, XRD , FTIR , and XPS. The results show that the structure of g-C 3 N 4 provided an ideal site for the accommodation of Ce(III) and thus facilitated the formation of surface hydroxyl groups. With 2.5%Ce–CN as a catalyst, the degradation efficiency of oxalate was increased by 47.1% after reaction for 30 min. The decomposition of ozone was accelerated in the presence of Ce–CN. Hydroxyl radicals were recorded by electron spin resonance and identified as the major actives species. Under the catalysis of 2.5%Ce–CN, the production of hydroxyl radicals was increased by 40%. The Ce(III) and surface hydroxyl groups that distributed uniformly on the surface of Ce–CN were speculated as the dual catalytic sites for the complexation of oxalate and activation of ozone, respectively. Ce–CN had a high stability and reutilization capability. It is proposed that a complex was formed between surface Ce(III) and oxalate, and this complex could be more easily attacked by the surrounding ozone and hydroxyl radicals than free oxalate. As oxalate is a typical recalcitrant carboxylic acid, the findings from this study are expected to promote the application of ozonation in the removal of organic pollutants.

Nanostructure engineering significantly influences the
simulated
enzyme catalysis and activity of nanozymes. Herein, using urea and
cerium(III) nitrate as precursors, nonstoichiometric cerium oxide
species were in situ deposited simultaneously with the growth of polymeric
carbon nitride by a one-step thermal polycondensation method, resulting
in cerium oxide/polymeric carbon nitride composite nanozymes with
excellent oxidase activity. The nitrogen-rich coordination configuration
of carbon nitride stabilizes cerium oxide species, and the matrix
of the polymer plays a role in isolating species. These effects create
the features of high dispersion and high exposure of cerium oxide
active species. More importantly, the enriched ammonia atmosphere
with strong reducing effect produced during urea polycondensation
fundamentally affects the ratio of Ce(IV) and Ce(III) shuttle pairs
in cerium oxide, leading to the dominant existence of Ce(III). As
a result, an extremely rich surface oxygen species emerged in the
oxygen vacancies associated with Ce(III). This unique architecture
endows the composite nanozyme with a strong capacity to store reactive
oxygen species, thereby conferring it a distinctive oxidase-like activity.
The corresponding Michaelis–Menten kinetic constant is as low
as 0.12 mmol L –1 , while the maximum reaction rate
can reach 8.26 × 10 –8 mol L –1 s –1 . Based on this composite nanozymes, an ascorbic
acid colorimetric detection system was constructed, achieving a detection
limit as low as 102 nmol L –1 . This study highlights
the great potential of polymeric carbon nitride loaded with cerium-based
active species as composite nanozymes, offering the insights into
the structure–activity relationships of highly active cerium
oxide nanozymes.

In this paper, poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS) hydrogel was synthesized following a one-step free-radical polymerization with N, N -methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linker. La(III) and Ce(III) were effectively removed from acidic aqueous solutions by using PSS hydrogel. FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, zeta potential analysis, and XPS were used to characterize the morphology and microstructure of PSS hydrogel. By varying pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial La(III) and Ce(III) ions concentrations, and interfering ions, the adsorption behavior of La(III) and Ce(III) ions on PSS hydrogel was studied. According to the experimental data, PSS hydrogel exhibited adsorption capacities above 200 mg·g −1 for La(III) and 180 mg·g −1 for Ce(III) over a wide pH range. Furthermore, adsorption data was simulated using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intra-particle diffusion kinetic equations. For the description of adsorption equilibrium, Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isothermal models were used. According to the results, the Langmuir isotherm equation provided the best fit. Based on the Langmuir isotherm equation, the maximum absorption capacities of La(III) and Ce(III) by PSS hydrogel was 241.0 and 223.7 mg·g −1 , respectively. According to FTIR and XPS analysis, sulfonic acid groups were involved in the adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) ions. And ion exchange and complexation were the main mechanisms involved. Finally, reusability tests reveal that the PSS hydrogel can be reused 13 times without losing effectiveness.

This study compared the coagulation performance, floc characteristics, and algal cell integrity between cerium-based coagulants and polyaluminum chloride (PAC). Under optimal dosage (6 mg Ce/L), both CAN (Ce(IV)-based) and CCl (Ce(III)-based) exhibited comparable algal removal efficiency to PAC (>90 %), while generating larger flocs (>1200 µm) that settled rapidly (90 % within 5 min). However, CAN caused significant algal cell lysis during floc aging, whereas CCl exhibited minimal cell damage. Analysis of CCl flocs revealed a distinct increase in the Ce(IV) concentration post-coagulation, accompanied by pronounced phosphate and carboxyl peaks on the floc surface. Further investigation into the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) during algal coagulation proved that the coagulation mechanism of CCl proceeded in two steps: 1) Anchoring of the coagulant onto the algal surface via strong adsorption of phosphate and carboxyl groups; 2) Synergistic interactions between algae and EPS, which induced partial oxidation of Ce(III) to Ce(IV), triggering in-situ hydrolysis of Ce(IV). This process generated large floc structures and the subsequent coagulation targeted to algae. This study highlights CCl as an eco-friendly and effective alternative with high algal removal and low toxicity (attributed to reduced Ce(IV) dosage), offering practical advantages for water treatment applications.

Due to the high sensitivity of the unshielded 5d orbit to the host environment, Ce 3+ has a wide-spread emission ranging from near ultraviolet to the red light region, making it a favorable choice for being UV-emitting phosphor activator and sensitizer of other co-doped lanthanide ions in luminescent materials. In present work, Ce 4+ →Ce 3+ self-reduction phenomenon in the layered phosphate MgIn 2 P 4 O 14 was observed. Noting that self-reduction ability is a valuable characteristic of new host materials, a new viewpoint underlying mechanism was put forward. Structure-, composition-, and temperature-dependence of photoluminescence of the new UV-emitting MgIn 2 P 4 O 14 : Ce x phosphors were investigated, with the relative mechanism discussed. Moreover, the sensitization of Dy 3+ by Ce 3+ was observed in Ce 3+ /Dy 3+ co-doped MgIn 2 P 4 O 14 phosphors. The excitation region of Dy 3+ in MgIn 2 P 4 O 14 : CeDy (220–460 nm) is markedly broadened compared to that of the Dy 3+ single-doped phosphor (270–460 nm) on account of the Ce 3+ →Dy 3+ energy transfer process . Present work shows that the MgIn 2 P 4 O 14 : CeDy phosphor can be promising phosphor using for fabrication of both light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and fluorescent lamps (FLs).
