The development of eco-friendly synthetic pathways for asymmetric organic carbonates such as butyl methyl carbonate (BMC) is essential for advancing sustainable chemistry. Traditional BMC production often relies on toxic precursors and energy-intensive methods. This study presents the rational design of La-doped CeO 2 nanorod catalysts (Ce 1 La x , x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5) synthesized via a hydrothermal method for the transesterification of bio-based n-butanol (BuOH) with dimethyl carbonate (DMC). Systematic characterization including XRD, Raman, FTIR, HRTEM, NH 3 -TPD, and CO 2 -TPD revealed that incorporating La 3+ into the CeO 2 lattice increased the concentration of surface oxygen vacancies and acid-base sites, both critical for activating reactants. The Ce 1 La 0.2 catalyst exhibited superior performance, achieving 95.5% BuOH conversion and 94.3% BMC selectivity under mild conditions (363 K, 2 h), outperforming most reported catalysts. This high activity was attributed to an appropriate concentration of oxygen vacancies and acid-base sites, which promoted the simultaneous activation and conversion of DMC and BuOH. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated excellent recyclability and minimal leaching, confirming its stability and heterogeneous nature. This work provides an efficient, sustainable strategy for BMC synthesis and highlights the importance of defect engineering in rare-earth-doped metal oxides for producing value-added chemicals through green catalysis. Graphical We report La-doped CeO 2 catalysts for eco-friendly synthesis of butyl methyl carbonate (BMC). The optimal catalyst achieved 95% BuOH conversion and 94% BMC selectivity under mild conditions, enabling sustainable green catalysis.

The application of rare earth micro-nano materials requires first formulating them into slurries with high dispersion stability, including polishing powders, catalysts, phosphors, ceramics, and other materials. To achieve this, it is essential not only to prepare monodisperse micro-nano particles but also incorporate appropriate dispersants to prevent particle aggregation. For this purpose, the study designed and synthesized a core-shell structured Gd 3 + -doped CeO 2 -coated SiO 2 composite abrasive: SiO 2 /CeO 2 :Gd. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance technique was employed to investigate the sedimentation behavior of polishing slurries and explore the mechanism by which different dispersants enhance slurry dispersion stability, achieving real-time nuclear magnetic resonance imaging tracking of the sedimentation process. Results show that: The strong paramagnetic properties of Gd 3+ significantly enhance the relaxation efficiency of water molecules within the particle surface region, thereby serving as a sensitive probe for characterizing the liquid environment at the particle surface. Based on the T 2 distributions, settling can be divided into three stages: homogenization, sedimentation, and agglomeration. In polishing slurries, water molecules primarily exist in three forms: bulk water (P1), hydration layer water (P4) and surface-bound water (P5), attributing to different peaks of T 2 relaxation times. However, only one T 2 peak (P2) was observed for the homogenization slurry due to the rapid exchange among the three kind of water molecules. With the sedimentation proceeding, P2 transforms into two peaks of P1 and P3. The rate of change in the peak areas of P1 and P2 can reflect the sedimentation rate of the slurry. In the agglomeration stage, the overlapping of hydration layers forms interstitial water, leading to an increase in its T 2 relaxation time. Therefore, the P3 can further split into two peaks of P4 and P5, corresponding to interstitial water and surface-bound water in the sediment layer.

Driven by the urgent demand for efficient CO elimination from fire-derived toxic smoke, CuO coupled with a redox-active CeO₂ support and La promoter has attracted attention as a robust and low-cost composite-oxide catalyst for CO oxidation under harsh conditions. In this study , the effect of La/Ce molar ratios and doping strategies on the structure and catalytic properties of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived catalysts were systematically investigated, aiming to construct dual-metal synergistic systems with boosted CO oxidation efficiency. By precisely regulating synthesis parameters (temperature, solvent, and precursor concentration), MOF-derived catalysts with tailored crystal frameworks, hierarchical pore structures, and optimized surface chemistry were successfully fabricated. The physicochemical properties and catalytic behaviors were correlated via complementary characterizations, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were combined to reveal the intrinsic catalytic mechanisms. This integrated strategy clarified how dual-metal synergy governs CO adsorption, activation, and conversion over a broad temperature range. Ultimately, this work provides a rational design strategy for high-performance CO oxidation catalysts and highlights the potential of La-doped MOF-derived CeO₂/CuO catalysts for fire-smoke purification.

CeO₂ nanoparticles markedly enhance the thermal stability of polymer microcapsule shells. • The composite shell blocks ultraviolet radiation and scavenges reactive oxygen species. • Waste soybean oil released from ruptured microcapsules restores bitumen crack integrity. • Multi-cycle self-healing is achieved through sustained oil release and matrix preservation. • A coupled protection-healing mechanism yields synergistic damage reduction in bitumen. The self-propagating cycle of ultraviolet aging and mechanical cracking limits the service life of bituminous infrastructure. This work interrupts this cycle using microcapsules with a cerium oxide (CeO₂) polymer composite shell encapsulating waste soybean cooking oil. The CeO₂ nanoparticles elevate shell decomposition temperature from 184 °C to above 250 °C and reduce UV transmittance to less than 10% in the UV B and UV C regions. After 14 days of accelerated UV aging, the carbonyl index accumulation is reduced by 47%. Upon crack propagation, the shell ruptures and releases the oil, achieving 99% self-healing efficiency at 20 °C for the first fracture cycle and maintaining 79% efficiency after five consecutive cycles. A coupled damage evolution model reveals a synergy factor of 3.4 for the 5 wt% CeO₂ formulation, demonstrating that the integrated protection and repair mechanisms reduce accumulated damage more than three times as effectively as the sum of independent contributions. This closed loop architecture demonstrates a potential pathway to transform waste oil into a functional resource while embedding proactive UV defense and autonomous crack healing. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), two immunosuppressive myeloid components within the tumor microenvironment (TME), represent fundamental barriers in cancer immunotherapy, whereas current nanomedicines rarely exert dual modulatory roles on these cell types simultaneously. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) not only mediates MDSC-induced immunosuppression but also triggers differentiation and polarization of M2-TAMs. Herein, an ROS scavenging nanozyme, Zr-CeO, with enhanced superoxide dismutase- and catalase-like activities for renal tumor growth inhibition is reported. Mechanistically, intracellular ROS scavenging by Zr-CeO significantly attenuates MDSC immunosuppression via dampening the unfolded protein response, hinders M2-TAM polarization through the ERK and STAT3 pathways, but barely affects neoplastic cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts. Furthermore, Zr-CeO enhances the antitumor effect of PD-1 inhibition in murine renal and breast tumor models, accompanied with substantially decreased MDSC recruitment and reprogrammed phenotype of TAMs in the tumor mass. Upon cell isolation, reversed immunosuppressive phenotypes of MDSCs and TAMs are identified. In addition, Zr-CeO alone or combination therapy enhances T lymphocyte infiltration and IFN- γ production within the TME. Collectively, a promising strategy to impair the quantity and function of immunosuppressive myeloid cells and sensitize immunotherapy in both renal and breast cancers is provided.
