Phase-dependent enhancement for CO2 photocatalytic reduction over CeO2/TiO2 catalysts

Jie Zhao,Yun Wang,Yingxuan Li,Xiu Yue,Chuanyi Wang

CeO2 is a basic promoter for CO2 photoreduction with H2O over TiO2-based catalysts, but there is still a lack of insight into the interaction of CeO2 with different TiO2 polymorphs and its effect on CO2 photoreduction. In this study, pure anatase, brookite, and rutile TiO2 and their respective hybrids with CeO2 were prepared, and their structural properties, optical properties, interfacial interaction and activity for CO2 photoreduction were systematically studied. The addition of CeO2 improved the activity for CO2 photoreduction under simulated sunlight irradiation, but the improvement depends on the phases of the TiO2. X-ray diffraction, macro-Raman spectroscopic and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements confirm the presence of Ti defects at the CeO2–rutile interfaces, implying a relatively strong interaction between CeO2 and rutile, which is beneficial for the interfacial separation of photogenerated charge carriers. As a result, CeO2/rutile shows the best enhancement of CO2 photoreduction among the studied CeO2/TiO2 systems. Moreover, different paramagnetic species were detected in the three TiO2 polymorphs. The O− radical anion in the anatase lattice could be oxidized to produce Ti3+ under UV-light irradiation, whereas the O2− radical anion on the surface of brookite TiO2 might retard CO production.

Crystal phase-regulated strong oxide-support interactions in CeO2/TiO2 catalysts for toluene oxidation

Xiaohong Hu,Jin Yuan,Zhuang Liu,Jinxing Mi,Houlin Wang,Shangchao Xiong,Jianjun Chen

TiO 2 crystal phase regulates oxide-support interaction strength in CeO 2 /TiO 2 . • Rutile-derived interfaces show stronger Ce-to-Ti charge transfer and higher Ti 3+ fractions. • CeO 2 /TiO 2 -R has lower oxygen-vacancy formation energy and enhanced oxygen activation. • 90% toluene conversion occurs approximately 70 °C lower on CeO 2 /TiO 2 -R than on CeO 2 /TiO 2 -A. Controlling the oxide–oxide interface is crucial for designing efficient oxide catalysts for volatile organic compound (VOC) oxidation, yet how the TiO 2 crystal phase regulates oxide-support interaction remains poorly understood. Here, CeO 2 supported on rutile (R) and anatase (A) TiO 2 was investigated as a model system for toluene oxidation. CeO 2 /TiO 2 -R exhibits markedly higher activity than CeO 2 /TiO 2 -A, with the temperature required for 90% toluene conversion lowered by approximately 70 °C. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and quasi- in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy show that the rutile-derived CeO 2 /TiO 2 interface exhibits stronger interfacial coupling and more pronounced electron redistribution between CeO 2 and TiO 2 , accompanied by a higher Ti 3+ -related contribution under oxidative conditions. In situ electron paramagnetic resonance measurements, together with density functional theory calculations, reveal enhanced oxygen activation at the CeO 2 /TiO 2 -R interface, associated with a lower interfacial oxygen-vacancy formation energy and promoted lattice‑oxygen activation as well as reactive oxygen species generation. Temperature-programmed infrared spectroscopy further shows faster turnover of toluene-derived oxygenated intermediates on CeO 2 /TiO 2 -R, with benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, and benzoate species identified along the reaction pathway, supporting an enhanced Mars–van Krevelen oxidation pathway enabled by enhanced oxygen activation. This work highlights crystal-phase engineering of oxide supports as an effective strategy to regulate oxide–oxide interfacial redox chemistry and improve VOC oxidation performance. Heteroaggregation of CeO2 and TiO2 engineered nanoparticles in the aqueous phase: Application of turbiscan stability index and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra

Muxi Luo,Xuejiao Qi,Tongxuan Ren,Yuxiong Huang,Arturo A. Keller,Hongtao Wang,Boran Wu,Huapeng Jin,Fengting Li

CeO 2 and TiO 2 engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) are being increasingly used in many applications. Due to their properties, heteroaggregation between these two types of ENPs is very likely, which can determine their fate and transport. However, the heteroaggregation behavior of CeO 2 and TiO 2 ENPs is still not clear, partly due to the lack of appropriate tools. In this study, we investigated the application of Turbiscan Stability Index (TSI) for the measurements of CeO 2 /TiO 2 ENP heteroaggregation. TSI was found to be effective to investigate the heteroaggregation and stability of the CeO 2 -TiO 2 ENPs system. Increasing CeO 2 /TiO 2 ENPs ratio reduces the TSI values, indicating higher stability. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra were used to study the interface interaction between humic acid (HA) and CeO 2 /TiO 2 ENPs. The TSI value of ENPs were rising with the increasing of CeO 2 /TiO 2 ENPs ratios in the H River or Q Reservoir water. In addition, their variation trends were similar to those in well-controlled synthetic water. Proposed interaction mechanisms include surface charge attraction and competitive adsorption.

Preparation of CeO2/TiO2 bilayer nanoparticle coating on ZrO2 fibers for thermal radiation shielding applications

Xinzhu Gan,Zhigang Wang,Bin Tian,Yong Xu,Ling Li,Rongfu Xu

In this study, a solvothermal method was utilized to fabricate a CeO 2 /TiO 2 bilayer coating on ZrO 2 fibers without the use of seed layers. The crystalline morphology, composition, and microstructural characteristics of the bilayer coating were investigated using XRD , Raman, EDS-mapping, SEM, TEM and XPS techniques. The effectiveness of the bilayer coating in shielding infrared radiation was evaluated through the utilization of reflectance and effective specific extinction coefficient (e*). When a dual-layer coating was applied, the fiber's e* underwent a significant enhancement within the wavelength range of 2.5–8 µm, with a maximum increase of 76.13 %. The study showcased that, with nearly identical thickness conditions, the bilayer CeO 2 /TiO 2 coating outperformed both the single-layer TiO 2 coating and the single-layer CeO 2 coating in terms of infrared light-blocking performance. Furthermore, the bilayer structure demonstrated outstanding heat resistance, withstanding temperatures of up to 1200 ℃. This exceptional thermal stability positions it as a highly favorable choice for applications requiring infrared opacity in high-temperature environments.

Synergistic effect between ceria and tungsten oxide on WO3–CeO2–TiO2 catalysts for NH3-SCR reaction

Lei Chen,Duan Weng,Zhichun Si,Xiaodong Wu

WO 3 –CeO 2 –TiO 2 catalysts for NO (nitrogen monoxide) reduction by ammonia were prepared by a sol–gel method. The catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD, Raman, NH 3 /NO adsorption and H 2 -TPR to investigate the relationships among the catalyst composition, structure, redox property, acidity and deNO x activity. WO 3 –CeO 2 –TiO 2 catalysts show a high activity in a broad temperature range of 200–480   °C. The low-temperature activity of catalysts is sensitive to the catalyst composition especially under low-O 2 -content atmospheres. It may be related to the synergistic effect between CeO x and WO x in the catalysts. On one hand, the interaction between ceria and tungsten oxide promotes the activation of gaseous oxygen to compensate the lattice oxygen consumed in NH 3 -SCR (selective catalytic reduction) reaction at low temperatures. Meanwhile, the Brønsted acid sites mainly arise from tungsten oxides, Lewis acid sites mainly arise from ceria. Both of the Brønsted and Lewis acid sites facilitate the adsorption of NH 3 on catalysts and improve the stability of the adsorbed ammonia species, which are beneficial to the NH 3 -SCR reaction.

Interfacial chemical regulation and catalytic performance of CeO2-TiO2/fly ash heterojunction photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution

Zhongming Hao,Chuanhui Zhang,Siyang Zhang,Sheng Han

A CeO 2 -TiO 2 /fly ash heterojunction uses waste-derived fly ash as a porous, defect-rich interfacial support. • Hydroxyl groups and defect sites in fly ash anchor TiO 2 /CeO 2 nanodomains, suppress aggregation and stabilize interfaces. • FTC extends the visible-light absorption edge to ca. 550 nm and narrows the apparent bandgap to ca. 2.25 eV. • Photocurrent, IPCE, EIS, EPR and a ca. 49 ns TRPL lifetime support enhanced charge separation and transfer. • In situ 13 C CP-MAS NMR tracks stepwise methanol oxidation, linking hole consumption to electron delivery for H 2 evolution. Solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution stores sunlight in chemical bonds, while coal fly ash provides a low-cost route to valorize industrial solid waste. Yet TiO 2 - and CeO 2 -based photocatalysts remain limited by weak visible-light absorption and rapid charge recombination, and the interfacial function of fly ash is poorly defined. Herein, we report a CeO 2 -TiO 2 /fly ash (denoted as FTC) heterostructured compositefor hydrogen evolution combination with the numerous characterizations of structural, optical, photoelectrochemical, spectroscopic and in situ solid-state C 13 cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. The FTC composite extends absorption to approximately 550 nm, narrows the apparent bandgap to ca. 2.25 eV and achieves efficient hydrogen evolution of 32 μmol h −1 g −1 under an air mass 1.5 global (AM 1.5G) irradiation. Fly ash supplies hydroxyl- and defect-rich anchoring sites for TiO 2 -CeO 2 interfaces stabilization, thus promoting charge separation and couple methanol oxidation with electron delivery for proton reduction. This work establishes waste-derived interface regulation as a practical strategy for low-cost photocatalytic solar-fuel generation. Active sites adjustable phosphorus promoted CeO2/TiO2 catalysts for selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3

Yiqing Zeng,Yanan Wang,Plaifa Hongmanorom,Zhigang Wang,Shule Zhang,Jiatang Chen,Qin Zhong,Sibudjing Kawi

Highly-efficient CeO 2 -TiO 2 -based catalyst is an attractive alternative to traditional V 2 O 5 -based catalysts for selective catalytic reduction of NO x by NH 3 (NH 3 -SCR). Herein, we construct an efficient and stable P-doped CeO 2 /TiO 2 ( y CeTi-P x ) catalyst by dispersing CeO 2 on strongly acidic and highly stable mesoporous P-doped TiO 2 (Ti-P x ). The characteristic structure of Ti-P x causes highly dispersed CeO 2 , strong active component-support interaction, and abundant surface active oxygen and acid sites on CeTi-P catalyst. Therefore, y CeTi-P x catalyst exhibits much higher catalytic activity than y CeTi catalyst at temperature of 200–450 °C. The y CeTi-P x catalysts show high activity in the presence of H 2 O and strong resistance to H 2 O + SO 2 at medium-high temperature, implying that they have great industrial application prospects. Different P/Ti ratio and CeO 2 loading content were investigated. Excessive P doping can block the Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox couple, and suppress redox sites on y CeTi-P x catalyst. Additionally, increasing CeO 2 content can reduce the NH 3 capacity of y CeTi-P x catalyst. By controlling the P/Ti ratio and CeO 2 loading content, surface acid sites and redox sites on y CeTi-P x catalyst can be balanced to obtain the best catalytic activity. This work demonstrates a feasible method in adjusting acid sites and redox sites on CeTi catalyst, which ultimately contributes to the new design of CeO 2 -TiO 2 -based catalyst.

Surface design of V2O5–CeO2–TiO2/SiC catalytic membrane for high-efficiency synergistic removal of NO and dust

Xiangsen Xu,Qin Huang,Yajing Wu,Yiqing Zeng,Feng Zhang,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Weihong Xing

For catalytic membranes, the loading of catalysts provides the membrane substrate with novel catalytic functionality, while simultaneously inducing membrane surface reconstruction. However, the effect of such surface reconstruction on performance remains unclear. Herein, VCeTi/SiC catalytic membranes with distinct surface structures were fabricated by three distinct preparation routes. Their NH 3 -SCR activity, gas permeance, and separation performance were systematically evaluated. For both VCeTi/SiC-A and VCeTi/SiC–B, the multi-step impregnation and catalyst blockage led to significantly reduced pore sizes (7.6 μm and 5.4 μm) and poor pore size distributions. In contrast, the VCeTi/SiC–C catalytic membrane prepared by single-step solution impregnation method exhibited an optimal catalyst distribution while largely maintaining a concentrated pore size distribution almost identical to the original catalytic membrane. Benefiting from the more uniform gas flow within the carrier owing to its concentrated pore size distribution, it exhibited the widest operating temperature window for NH 3 -SCR with >90% NO conversion from 300 to 450 °C. Meanwhile, VCeTi/SiC–C also displayed the improved pore size (8.0 μm), the highest gas permeance (380 m 3  m −2  h −1 ·kPa −1 ) and the lowest filtration resistance. Furthermore, we discovered "defect-compensating effect" of dust in combined removal experiment, where dust particulates contribute to enhanced denitration performance. This work provides critical insights into the surface design of high-performance catalytic membranes for medium-high temperature gas purification applications.

MOF-derived hierarchical porous CeO2/TiO2 composite for highly efficient removal of high-concentration tetracycline by synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis

Lanshu Zhao,Baolin Yan,Bo Yang,Xinyu Zhao,Linxin Zhang,Shiyan An,Huaize Han,Yihan Liu,Yi’an Peng,Yuhua Dai,Jianxiang Yu

Tetracycline (TC) contamination in aquatic environments poses significant risks owing to antibiotic resistance gene dissemination and ecotoxicity. Integrating adsorption with photocatalysis offers a promising strategy for pre-concentrating contaminants at photocatalytic adsorbent surfaces while enabling solar-driven mineralization. Herein, a novel hierarchical mesoporous CeO2/TiO2 composite was constructed by transforming a Ti-based metal–organic framework, MIL-125-NH2 (NM), which serves as a highly efficient photocatalytic adsorbent for the treatment of high-concentration TC solutions. Remarkably, it delivered a high equilibrium adsorption capacity of 146.4 mg g−1 for TC within 240 min, significantly outperforming pristine NM by approximately 9.3 times. Moreover, its removal efficiency can further attain 93.1% for the high-concentration TC solutions (50 mg L−1) under simulated solar irradiation, and it remains above 80% after three successive cycles. The hierarchical porous structure enables a rapid TC preconcentration, while Ce–O–Ti heterointerfaces facilitate efficient charge separation and interfacial reactions. This work validates a facile MOF-templating approach for designing bifunctional composites that couple efficient adsorption with solar photocatalysis, offering significant potential for treating recalcitrant antibiotic pollutants in wastewater systems.

Regulation of surface oxygen vacancy of Cu-CeO2/TiO2 heterostructures via fast Joule heating method for enhanced CO2 electrochemical reduction

Yunshuo Zhu,Lili Guan,Xiwen Song,Yarong Huang,Ming Li,Qingxian Zhang,Ruihua Guo

Strict control of carbon emissions is crucial for expediting the achievement of carbon neutrality. However, the current CO 2 RR electrocatalytic exhibits numerous shortcomings that impede the enhancement of catalytic activity. Issues such as lengthy catalyst preparation times, and high levels of precious metal content. Additionally, the aggregation of ultrafine nanoparticles contributes to a rapid deterioration in catalytic performance. Herein, a Joule-heating method is efficiently utilized to synthesize heterostructures nano-catalysts for CO 2 electroreduction on carbon cloth substrates. This method takes advantage of the thermoelectric coupling of the carbon cloth to achieve carbothermal reduction, while also regulating phase composition and introduction of oxygen vacancies. The Cu-CeO 2 /TiO 2 /CC catalyst synthesized in this method showed a current density in CO 2 of −32 mA·cm −2 at −1.0 V (vs. RHE). Notably, this catalyst demonstrated high CO selectivity and Faraday efficiency (FE CO ) of up to 82.5 % at a low potential of −0.3 V (vs. RHE). Optimal electrochemical performance is achieved at a power of 40 W. The ultra-fast temperature change process prevented the agglomeration of catalyst particles and facilitated the construction of a stable heterogeneous interface with a high oxygen vacancy concentration. In conclusion, this study presents a promising approach, particularly for the rapid preparation of low-cost, highly selective non-precious metal electrocatalysts.
