Li S battery suffers from polysulfides' shuttle effect and unsatisfactory redox kinetics. To tackle these issues, we design a multi-functional interlayer based on heterogeneous Mo 2 C/Co confided by N-doped porous carbon (Mo 2 C/Co@NC) via one-step controlled pyrolysis of Co 2+ /MoO 4 2− /2-methylimidazole. The heterogeneous Mo 2 C/Co as active centers effectively immobilizes polysulfides and accelerates their redox transformation kinetics. Moreover, the hierarchical porous NC matrix guarantees rapid electron/ion transport. Acting as an interlayer, the electrochemical evaluation demonstrates desirable performance. Specifically, a high initial discharge capacity of 874.0 mAh g −1 is achieved at 3C, which retains 373.3 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles (capacity fading rate: 0.057 %/cycle), significantly outperforming battery without interlayer (0.082 %). This work demonstrates an effective heterointerface engineering strategy for the development of Li S battery practical application.

Although the Co and N co-doped carbon catalyst (Co-NC) has attracted much attention because of its low cost and the natural abundance of the dopants, it has a low oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and a high selectivity for the two-electron (2e - ) reduction of oxygen to H 2 O 2 , which affects its use in fuel cells. Co-NC catalysts were prepared by the pyrolysis of a mixture of cobalt chloride and chitosan pretreated with zinc chloride at 650, 750 and 850 o C, followed by washing with nitric acid and annealing at 900 o C. The results indicate that zinc chloride helps the complexing of chitosan with Co 2+ , which is also a chemical activator that generates pores, and annealing caused the evaporation of the spherical Zn metal nanoparticles formed by the carbothermal reduction of Zn ions, leading to a unique porous structure of the catalysts with spherical pores filled with spherical carbon nanoparticles formed by the growth of nitrogen-doped carbon as a result of the Co catalyst. The degree of graphitization is also improved by the Co catalyst. The Co-NC catalyst obtained at a pyrolysis temperature of 750 o Cshows the same four-electron (4e - ) reduction of oxygen as a commercial Pt/C catalyst, and a significantly higher ORR catalytic activity, longer-term stability and better methanol tolerance than a commercial Pt/C catalyst. These are due to its large specific surface area, high contents of pyridinic nitrogen and graphitic nitrogen that disperse the Co species and its excellent electrical conductivity.

The catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatic sulfonic acids (NSAs) to synthesize aminoaromatic sulfonic acids (ASAs) is an environmentally promising alternative. However, the deactivation of current catalysts hinders its practical application. In this work, we proposed a strategy of trace sulfur modification to enhance the sulfur-tolerance of the Co@NC catalyst. Characterization revealed that Co@NC-S synthesized with cobalt sulfate has the largest particle size and specific surface area. Using sodium m -nitrobenzenesulfonate (SNS) hydrogenation as a probe reaction, the Co@NC-S catalyst demonstrated superior performance, achieving 99.52% conversion and 98.02% selectivity (100 °C, 3 MPa). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidated that the remarkable sulfur-tolerance of the Co@NC-S catalyst originated from the interaction between the trace sulfur species and the cobalt nanoparticles, thereby weakening the bonding strength of Co with various sulfur-containing compounds. The Co@NC-S catalyst also exhibited excellent stability, magnetic recyclability, and versatility in hydrogenating diverse NSAs, underscoring its significant industrial potential.

Introducing the second metal is an effective strategy to ameliorate oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance of cobalt and nitrogen doped carbon materials (Co-NC). In this study, Sn modulated Co-NC catalysts with enriched active sites (CoSn-NC) were synthesized by using formamide as ligand. Co and Sn bimetals coexist on nitrogen-doped carbon carriers and coordinated with nitrogen to form M − N active centers. Compared with Co-NC, CoSn -NC exhibited outstanding catalytic activity in terms of early initial potential of 1.04 V and positive half-wave potential of 0.89 V. Electrochemical testing and XPS characterization proved that the addition of Sn enriched the active site of Co-NC. More importantly, the electronic structure of Co–N is adjusted to perfect adsorption energy of the intermediate. The study puts forward a new idea and direction for optimizing single metal Co-NC catalyst.

Considering the diverse structures and superior properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), we successfully synthesized Co/NC@PANI composites through high-temperature pyrolysis and in-situ chemical oxidation using zeolitic imidazolate framework compounds (ZIFs) as precursors. The inclusion of polyaniline in the composites improved conductive loss and interfacial polarization, while the porous structure of Co/NC and uniformly dispersed cobalt nanoparticles can contribute to electromagnetic wave multiple reflection and magnetic loss. By synergistically dissipating electromagnetic waves through various loss mechanisms, we were able to control electromagnetic parameters and optimize performance, resulting in the development of Co/NC@PANI composites with exceptional electromagnetic properties. The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) reaches − 46.28 dB at 5.76 GHz, with a matching thickness of 5 mm. And the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL<− 10 dB) reaches 3.52 GHz at a thickness of 2.5 mm. This work provides an efficient enlightenment for constructing microwave-absorbing material with high performance.

In this study, a new lightweight one-dimensional absorber Co@NC@MoS 2 was designed and prepared. Firstly, polydopamine (PDA) was coated by oxidative self-polymerization with cobalt-nitrilotriacetic acid chelate nanowires (Co-NTAC) as template. Then core-shell structured magnetic hierarchical nanotubes (Co@PDA@MoS 2 ) were prepared by one-step hydrothermal method. After thermal annealing, PDA layer was transformed into nitrogen doped carbon layer (NC) to obtain the efficient microwave absorber Co@NC@MoS 2 . The removal of template and growth of MoS 2 were completed simultaneously, the preparation process was simplified. Because of its good magnetic loss and dielectric loss, Co@NC@MoS 2 shows excellent microwave absorption performance. Under filler content of 15 wt.%, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) can reach -61.97 dB@9.2 GHz, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 5.6 GHz. The electromagnetic parameters of Co@NC@MoS 2 can be further adjusted by changing the load of MoS 2 . Meanwhile, the structure and composition of Co@NC@MoS 2 were systematically analyzed. The influence of the microstructure on the microwave absorbing properties was investigated, and the microwave attenuation mechanism is revealed. As an efficient and lightweight absorber, Co@NC@MoS 2 has potential application value in the construction of new stealth coatings.

Cathode materials play important roles in the optimization of methane upgrading in microbial electrolysis cell-coupled anaerobic digestion (MEC-AD) systems. In this study, metal organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon-based bimetallic hybrids (Ni/Co-NC) was synthesized as cathode material and its performances and microbial activities were evaluated in MEC-AD. A high methane production rate (0.57 m 3 CH 4 /m 3 ·d) and yield (0.34 m 3 CH 4 /kgCOD) were achieved with a Ni/Co-NC cathode at a potential of 0.6 V. The methane content in the biogas was upgraded to ca. 90%. The enhanced methane production was likely related to the positive surface charge and the good conductive capacity and hydrogen evolution of the Ni/Co-NC cathode, as demonstrated by electrochemical assessment. Additionally, roughness and extensive surface areas provided additional room for cathodic biofilm adhesion via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. A significant enrichment of Methanobacterium (79.6%) in the MEC-AD-Ni/Co-NC system, especially in the biofilm of the cathode surface, indicated that the methane production pathway shifted from acetoclastic to hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. Moreover, Methanosaeta harundinacea 6Ac species, which can directly accept electrons, were identified in the MEC-AD systems. These findings revealed that Ni/Co-NC cathode probably enhanced bioelectrochemical reduction of CO 2 to CH 4 by accelerating hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis and direct electron transfer.

It is extremely ideal but also a challenge to develop stable and effective hydrogenation catalysts with high activity for the product of value-added fine chemicals. Herein, we report a in situ S-doped NC graphene-like shell encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles catalyst (Co@S-NC) for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes. The introduction of sulphur into NC graphene-like shell surface enhances the electron disturbance and promotes the electron transfer interior metal into external graphene-like shell, accompanying with triggering hydrogenation reaction. For Co@S-NC catalyst, the unusual coordination environment between Co NPs metal and NC graphene-like shell decreases limitation of the graphene-like layer and possesses an eminent catalytic activity and reusability. The Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that CoN 3 S 1 within Co@S-NC, the center of S-doped NC graphene-like shell encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles, is an active site for the hydrogenation reaction and has a lower energy barrier 1.03 eV for the rate-determining step than CoN 4 of Co@S-NC catalyst. These researches verify that the Co@S-NC, excellent graphitic carbon encapsulation material, manifests a wide application for increasing the catalytic activity of graphene-like shell embedded catalyst.

Developing low-cost, highly active, and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts is a challenging issue in electrochemical water electrolysis . Herein, we develop a simple metal organic frameworks (MOFs) based approach to prepare bifunctional Co-NC@ Mo 2 C complex catalysts. Differently from traditional carbon encapsulated functional nanomaterials , herein the carbon-based framework derived carbonitride and Co nanoparticles (Co-NC) are encapsulated with Mo 2 C. Benefiting from the unique reverse-encapsulation structure and synergetic effects of Mo 2 C and Co-NC, the Co-NC@Mo 2 C catalyst shows superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. In alkaline media , it affords the current density of 10 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 99 mV and 347 mV for HER and OER, respectively. Interestingly, due to a reversed encapsulation structure where Co nanoparticles are protected by Mo 2 C, it leads to an outstanding HER catalytic activity (a low overpotential of 143 mV) and stability in acidic solutions. Remarkably, when employed as both the cathode and anode for overall water splitting, a low cell voltage of 1.685 V is required to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline media with excellent stability, making the Co-NC@Mo 2 C an efficient non noble metal bifunctional electrocatalyst toward water splitting.

Carbon-supported iron-cobalt bimetallic electrocatalysts usually exhibit robust catalytic activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the spatial isolation of Fe species at atomic level on cobalt-carbon solid remains a great challenge for practical catalytic applications in the OER. Here, we report the fabrication of CoFe bimetal porous carbon electrocatalysts by pyrolysis of molecularly defined iron complexes such as FePc (Pc = phthalocyanine) and Fe(acac) 3 pre-encapsulated in the cavities of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-67. With this unique strategy, high-loading atomic Fe nanoclusters (Fe-ACs) and Fe single atoms (Fe-SAs) were supported on Co/NC hybrids relying on the size of the molecular Fe precursors. The former exhibited superior OER performance to the single Fe atom-decorated Co/NC, as well as other ZIF-67-derived electrocatalysts. Theoretical modulation suggests Co as the OER active site for Fe-ACs@Co/NC at the in situ -formed FeOOH-ACs/Co 3 O 4 interface, while Fe was proposed as the active site for Fe-SAs@Co/NC.

It is highly significant to develop effective catalysts made from non-precious metals for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process of eugenol to propylcyclohexane. A triazine polymer (PAF-53) was employed as a template to synthesize a highly potential Co/NC-T (nitrogen-doped carbon modified by template) catalyst through one-pot pyrolysis method, aiming to facilitate the HDO reaction of eugenol. The results of the characterization indicated that Co nanoparticles (NPs) were incorporated within the structure of nitrogen-doped carbon. Adding the suitable quantity of PAF-53 could improve the distribution of Co NPs, increase the specific area and average pore diameter, and facilitate the generation of numerous carbon nanotubes that are sparse and porous. Furthermore, the incorporation of PAF-53 improved the interaction between Co and nitrogen-doped carbon, and endowed Co/NC-T with high mobile electrons. As revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the adsorption of eugenol molecules was obviously enhanced, and the parallel adsorption configuration was remarkably favorable. The conversion of eugenol over Co/NC-T-1:4 reached 100% and the selectivity of propylcyclohexane reached 98.4%, at 300 °C, 3 MPa H 2 and a liquid hourly space velocity of 12 h −1 . Moreover, the Co/NC-T-1:4 catalyst exhibited remarkable durability and scalability during the HDO process of eugenol.

Magnetoelectric composite is an effective strategy for increasing microwave attenuation and optimizing impedance matching to improve the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties of microwave absorbers. However, establishing the relationship between the composition, structure, and properties of magnetoelectric coupling materials remains a challenge. Herein, cobalt/N-doped carbon (Co/NC) with multiple interfaces was designed and prepared by a magnetoelectric synergistic strategy. The Co/NC composites exhibited an effective absorption bandwidth of 7.68 GHz at a low filler loading of 15 wt%. At a matching thickness of 3.5 mm, the minimum reflection loss reached −54.0 dB. In the RCS simulation, the Co/NC coating exhibited remarkable radar stealth properties, maintaining RCS values below −20 dB m 2 across all angles. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations and electron holography were applied to confirm that the excellent EMW absorption properties of Co/NC were primarily stem from the integration of multi-polarization and microscale magnetic coupling. Collectively, these findings highlight the magnetoelectric synergistic effect and interface coupling response mechanism in Co/NC heterostructures, offering a viable strategy for developing high-performance magnetoelectric composite microwave absorbers.
