MoP/Co2P Hybrid Nanostructure Anchored on Carbon Fiber Paper as an Effective Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution

Panpan Zhou,Yaqi Zhang,Bo Ye,Shan Qin,Rongrong Zhang,Tianyun Chen,Huajian Xu,Lei Zheng,Qinghua Yang

Graphical Making a splash : The hybrid nanostructure MoP/Co 2 P /CFP was achieved first by a facile hydrothermal approach to obtain Co(CO 3 ) 0.35 Cl 0.20 (OH) 1.10 NA/CFP, followed by deposition of MoO 2 nanoparticles via CVD in the presence of MoO 3 and a subsequent in situ phosphorization process. The catalyst afforded an overpotential of 140 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 80 mV dec −1 and exhibited superior stability and durability in long-term durability test. Developing low-cost and effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to replace Pt-group metals is a continuous challenge. Recently, transition metal phosphides have received increasing attention owing to their high intrinsic activity in catalyzing HER in acidic media. Herein, we reported a novel hybrid nanostructure MoP/Co 2 P anchored on carbon fiber paper (CFP) (MoP/Co 2 P/CFP) which was achieved by a facile hydrothermal approach to obtain Co(CO 3 ) 0.35 Cl 0.20 (OH) 1.10 nanowires array (NA)/CFP, followed by deposition of MoO 2 nanoparticles via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in the presence of MoO 3 and a subsequent in situ phosphorization process. It was worth noting that the catalyst exhibited higher catalytic activity for HER in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution, which afforded an overpotential of 140 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 80 mV dec −1 , an exchange current density of 0.153 mA cm −2 and a high electrochemical double-layer capacitance (C dl ) of 48.2 mF cm −2 . Moreover, it also exhibited superior stability and durability in long-term durability test.

Junhong Ma,Akang Sun,Yuemei Liu,Tuan K.A. Hoang,Lijing Yang

Constructing economical and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is very important to develop clean energy technologies, such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries . In this work, the Fe 2 P-Co 2 P embedded in N-doped biomass-based carbon and carbon nanotube hybrid (Fe 2 P-Co 2 P/NC B -CNT) with plenty of interfacial structure was successfully fabricated using a green strategy. The satisfactory surface area, hierarchical porous structure, and the synergistic effect between Fe 2 P-Co 2 P nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped carbon composite substrate make the Fe 2 P-Co 2 P/NC B -CNT exhibiting excellent catalytic activity and stability for ORR.

Synergistically enhancing electrocatalytic activity of Co2P by Cr doping and P vacancies for overall water splitting

Yu Liu,Yingying Xing,Xinyu Zheng,Shengjie Xu,Di Li,Deli Jiang

Designing high-performance and earth-abundant bifunctional catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel electrode composed of Cr-doped Co 2 P with P vacancies nanowire arrays (denoted as CrCo 2 P(V p ) NWs) grown on nickel foam was fabricated via a hydrothermal and successive calcination method. The Cr doping and vacancy engineering synergistically enable the exposure of more active sites, optimize electronic structure, and accelerate the charge transport capability, thus enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances. As a result, the obtained Cr 0.4 Co 2 P(V p ) NWs catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activities in 1.0 M KOH solution with low overpotentials of 37 mV at −10 mA cm −2 for HER and 253 mV at 20 mA cm −2 for OER, respectively. Furthermore, using Cr 0.4 Co 2 P(V p ) NWs as a dual-function catalyst only requires 1.54 V voltage at 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. Notably, the Cr 0.4 Co 2 P(V p ) NWs catalyst displays satisfactory stability with only a small attenuation of 3.2% after 50 h in a constant current testing. This study highlights the synergistic effect between doping and anion-vacancies in the enhancement of electrocatalytic activities and provides a feasible strategy to design effective, earth-abundant, and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting.

In Situ Synthesis of Strongly Coupled Co2P-CdS Nanohybrids: An Effective Strategy To Regulate Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Activity

Songsong Li,Lu Wang,Shuang Liu,Boran Xu,Nan Xiao,Yangqin Gao,Weiyu Song,Lei Ge,Jian Liu

Noble-metal-free photocatalyst Co2P-CdS was synthesized via a facile in situ hydrothermal method for the first time to boost the performance of photocatalytic H2 production. This synthesis process allows the Co2P nanoparticles to disperse evenly on the surface of CdS sub-microspheres and to form unique intimate contact interfaces. The physical and photophysical properties of as-prepared Co2P-CdS composite samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis diffusion reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and surface photovoltage (SPV) spectroscopy. The results indicate that the photocatalytic H2 evolution activity of CdS sub-microspheres under visible-light irradiation is significantly enhanced by introducing inexpensive Co2P as co-catalyst. The Co2P-CdS sample with a loading of 1.2 mol% Co2P gives the highest H2 production rate of 0.303 mmol·h–1, which was about 3 times higher than that achieved with 0.5 wt% Pt-loaded CdS sample. After further introduction of K2HPO4 as sacrificial agent, the H2 production rate reached 0.356 mmol·h–1, which is 41 times higher than that obtained with pure CdS. The apparent quantum yield of the Co2P-decorated CdS sample is about 13.88% at 420 nm. These results suggest that the synergistic effect between Co2P and CdS greatly enhances the photocatalytic activity of CdS. Moreover, a reasonable mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity was proposed through density functional theory calculation and verified by SPV spectroscopy.

Electron redistribution induced by p–d orbital hybridization in Co2P/FeP nanosheets boosts water electrooxidation

Qiyan Sun,Yu Miao,Ruixue Zhang,Guang-Rui Xu,Chuanfang Zhang,Kang Liu,Zexing Wu,Lei Wang

Water electrooxidation in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers has been considered to be a four-electron pathway mechanism, which leads to inherent sluggish kinetics that severely limits the scalable production of high-purity H2. Herein, cobalt phosphide/iron phosphide (Co2P/FeP) nanosheets with electron redistribution through aerogel-assisted and gas-phase phosphorization strategies have been reported. Benefiting from the unique nanosheet structure and electron redistribution induced by p–d hybridization interaction, the as-obtained Co2P/FeP nanosheets display outstanding alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Co–P and Fe–P charge bridges trigger p–d orbital hybridization between the transition metal and P elements, which downshifts the d-band center of Co2P/FeP nanosheets and accelerates the formation of *OOH with a lower energy barrier that can expedite the water electrooxidation process with an overpotential of 257 mV to reach the 10 mA cm−2 current density and a Tafel slope of 39.6 mV dec−1. This work provides a deep insight into understanding the remarkable OER properties of transition metal phosphates by electron redistribution.

V-doped Co2P Anchored on the N–P-Doped Three-Dimensional Covalently Cross-Linked Graphene As a Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Catalyst for Alkaline Water/Seawater Splitting

Shaopei Jia,Yanfeng Gao,Xiaofei Ma,Yunfei Cao,Quan Huang,Qian Zhang,Zhixin Wang,Yanjie Wang,Yuanyuan Li,Dan Li,Renkai Chang,Yunchao Mu

Designing and synthesizing highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts of seawater electrolysis for the hydrogen evolution reaction is important for realizing green hydrogen production. Herein, a heterostructured V-doped Co2P anchored on N–P-doped three-dimensional covalently cross-linked graphene (V–Co2P@NPPC/3DG) electrocatalysts was synthesized with the help of V-doped ZIF-67 as an intermediate and a controlled phosphidation process. The as-prepared V–Co2P@NPPC/3DG-1:5 had low overpotentials of 98.3 and 88.3 mV (at 10 mA cm–2) in alkaline water and artificial seawater, respectively, and the corresponding Tafel slopes were 56.4 and 51.0 mV dec–1. The electrolyzer with a flowing alkaline artificial seawater assembled from V–Co2P@NPPC/3DG-1:5 with a commercial RuO2 catalyst exhibited a cell voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm–2, which is close to that of Pt/C||RuO2 (1.52 V). Notably, the cell voltage of V–Co2P@NPPC/3DG-1:5||RuO2 was lower than that of Pt/C||RuO2 at a high current density (>58 mA cm–2), which exhibited superior stability. V doping effectively enhanced the intrinsic activity of Co2P, and the complexation with NPPC/3DG achieved full exposure of the active sites while enhancing the charge transfer rate during HER. This work will attract attention to the role of metal compound-carbon support interactions in enhancing the intrinsic activity, conductivity, and stability of electrocatalysts.

An Exceptionally Efficient Co−Co2P@N, P-Codoped Carbon Hybrid Catalyst for Visible Light-Driven CO2-to-CO Conversion

Yong Xu,Jiang Mo,Zi-Cheng Fu,Su Liu,Zhi Yang,Wen-Fu Fu

Graphical A hybrid photocatalyst consisting of Co and Co 2 P nanoparticles embedded in N, P-codoped carbon nanosheets was used in a visible light-driven system for CO 2 -to-CO conversion. The catalytic system displayed a high CO production rate of up to 35 000 μmol h −1 g −1 with CO selectivity of 79.1 % in the first 3 h of reaction. Linear CO production at an exceptionally high rate of 63 000 μmol h −1 g −1 was observed in the first 1 h of photocatalytic reaction. Artificial photosynthesis has attracted wide attention, particularly the development of efficient solar light-driven methods to reduce CO 2 to form energy-rich carbon-based products. Because CO 2 reduction is an uphill process with a large energy barrier, suitable catalysts are necessary to achieve this transformation. In addition, CO 2 adsorption on a catalyst and proton transfer to CO 2 are two important factors for the conversion reaction, and catalysts with high surface area and more active sites are required to improve the efficiency of CO 2 reduction. Here, a visible light-driven system for CO 2 -to-CO conversion is reported, which consists of a heterogeneous hybrid catalyst of Co and Co 2 P nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanolayers codoped with N and P (Co-Co 2 P@NPC) and a homogeneous Ru II -based complex photosensitizer. The average generation rate of CO of the system was up to 35 000 μmol h −1 g −1 with selectivity of 79.1 % in 3 h. Linear CO production at an exceptionally high rate of 63 000 μmol h −1 g −1 was observed in the first hour of reaction. Inspired by this highly active catalyst, Co@NC and Co 2 P@NPC materials were also synthesized and their structure, morphology, and catalytic properties for CO 2 photoreduction were explored. The results showed that the nanoparticle size, partially adsorbed H 2 O molecules on the catalyst surface, and the hybrid nature of the systems influenced their photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance.

In Situ Construction of a Co2P/CoP Heterojunction Embedded on N-Doped Carbon as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for a Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Ying Lei,Feng Lin,Nengyu Hong,Jian Zhang,Yulin Wang,Haijie Ben,Jianguang Li,Liyong Ding,Liang Lv

Noble metal-free electrocatalysts have received widespread attention in a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to the importance of renewable energy development. Herein, a Co2P/CoP heterojunction embedded on an N-doped carbon (Co2P/CoP/NC) electrocatalyst was prepared via an in situ pyrolysis method. The as-prepared electrocatalyst exhibited efficient electrocatalytic activity for HER in an acidic solution. The Co2P/CoP/NC catalyst displayed an overpotential of 184 mV at 10 mA cm−2and a low Tafel slope of 82 mV dec−1, which could be attributed to the tight Co2P/CoP heterojunction and the synergetic effect of Co2P/CoP and N-doped carbon. In addition, the electrochemical active surface area of Co2P/CoP/NC was 75.2 m2g−1, which indicated that more active regions can be applied for the HER process. This report may pave a new way for the design of efficient and low-cost N-doped-carbon-supported 3d transition metal phosphide electrocatalysts.

Co2P encapsulated in N, O co-doped carbons as bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution and reduction reactions

Haifang Xie,Dahai Zeng,Bing Du,Peng Zhang,Huaijun Lin,Qingyang Li,Zhidan Lin,Wei Li,Yuying Meng

Exploring highly-efficient and low-cost non-precious metal electrocatalysts for electrochemical reactions such as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of crucial importance for clean and renewable energy technologies . Herein, we report the synthesis of Co 2 P encapsulated in N- and O- co-doped carbons (Co 2 P@NOCs), which can serve as excellent noble metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts for OER and ORR in alkaline media . Especially, the Co 2 P@NOC-2 electrocatalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 330 mV to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm −2 for OER in 1.0 M KOH solution, with a small Tafel slope of 97 mV dec −1 . With respect to ORR activity, Co 2 P@NOC-2 gives positive onset ( E onset ) and half-wave ( E 1/2 ) potentials of 0.90 and 0.75 V ( vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte, respectively. Additionally, it presents better methanol tolerance and long-term durability as compared to the commercial Pt/C (20  wt ·%) catalyst. The high electrocatalytic activity and good long-term stability toward OER and ORR can be attributed to the conductive heteroatoms-doped carbon layer , the embedded Co 2 P active sites and the synergistic effects between them. The strong synergism can significantly promote the electron transfer during the reaction and enhance the OER and ORR performance.

Facile one-step in-situ encapsulation of non-noble metal Co2P nanoparticles embedded into B, N, P tri-doped carbon nanotubes for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Asad Ali,Yang Liu,Rongcheng Mo,Pinsong Chen,Pei Kang Shen

Developing high performance, good stability and noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for renewable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remain a substantial challenge. Herein, we introduce a novel facile one-step in-situ strategy through pyrolysis for the synthesis of Co 2 P nanoparticles encapsulated Boron, Nitrogen, and Phosphorous tri-doped carbon nanotubes (Co 2 P/BNP-CNTs). The synergetic effect between Co 2 P nanoparticles and heteroatom doped CNTs contributes to the remarkable HER performance. The Co 2 P/BNP-CNT-900 electrocatalyst shows a low overpotential of 133 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 90 mV dec −1 in 0.1 M KOH media. More importantly, the Co 2 P/BNP-CNT-900 electrocatalyst exhibits superior long-term stability in alkaline solution at −0.25 V versus Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE) for 15 h and up to 1000 cycles with negligible performance loss. Overall, our works suggest a one-pot facile synthesis strategy for rational designing high-performance electrocatalysts with enhanced HER performance.

From atomic bonding to heterointerfaces: Co2P/WC constructed by lacunary polyoxometalates induced strategy as efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts at all pH values

Changle Yue,Na Liu,Yaping Li,Yang Liu,Fengyue Sun,Wenjing Bao,Yongxiao Tuo,Yuan Pan,Ping Jiang,Yan Zhou,Yukun Lu

Herein, a novel in-situ “atomic binding to heterointerface” strategy is proposed to obtain Co 2 P/ [email protected] /CNTs catalyst with abundant heterointerface between cobalt phosphide and tungsten carbide (Co 2 P/WC) by the polyoxometalates (POMs)-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) precursor. The natural quasi interfaces in K 10 [Co 4 (H 2 O) 2 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 ] molecule crucially guide the abundant Co 2 P/WC heterointerfaces down to atomic level. Meanwhile, MOFs cages can effectively encapsulate nanosized POMs at molecular level to control the size and dispersion of Co 2 P/WC nanoparticle , while carbon nanotubes (CNTs) enhance conductivity at nanoscale level. The interfacial electronic modulation between Co 2 P and WC lowering the energy barrier of the rate determining step , thus Co 2 P/ [email protected] /CNTs showed reasonable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and stability in all-pH media including sea water. This work provides a “bottom-up” synthetic strategy for confined heterostructures , thus offering the prospect for more efficient interfacial charge modulation.

Hierarchical fabrication of hollow Co2P nanocages coated with ZnIn2S4 thin layer: Highly efficient noble-metal-free photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution

Quan Zhang,Xiaohao Wang,Juhua Zhang,Lingfeng Li,Huajun Gu,Wei-Lin Dai

The directional synthesis of transition metal phosphides was considered to be an effective strategy to solve the overdependence of noble metals on photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) reactions. Inspiringly, this work reported a facile method for constructing hollow Co 2 P nanocages (Co 2 P NCGs) that derived from ZIF-67 by calcining and phosphiding procedure in nitrogen atmosphere to act as non-noble metal cocatalysts. Followed with further coating thin-layered ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) on the surface of Co 2 P NCGs through a hydrothermal reaction , the hierarchical robust Co 2 P/ZnIn 2 S 4 nanocages (Co 2 P/ZIS NCGs) were then delicately fabricated as efficient photocatalysts for PHE reactions. The uniquely hollow structure of Co 2 P NCGs largely diffused the photogenerated chargers that induced from ZIS and the closely interfacial contact significantly promoted the separation and transfer of electrons from ZIS to Co 2 P according to density functional theory (DFT) calculation, synergistically resulting in an efficient hydrogen generation performance. PHE results showed that an efficient H 2 evolution rate of 7.93 mmol/g/h over 10% Co 2 P/ZIS NCGs was achieved, about 10 times higher than that of pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 . More importantly, the hierarchically hollow Co 2 P/ZIS NCGs exhibited ascendant PHE activity in comparison with that of 1% noble metal (Pt, Au, Ag) loaded ZnIn 2 S 4 with superior sustainability, all indicating the efficient and stable photocatalysts of Co 2 P/ZIS NCGs for PHE reactions.
