Efficient regeneration of styrene-saturated activated carbon: Dynamic evolution from Co0-CoMn2O4 to a defect-rich mixed interface

Yimin Wang,Jian Li,Xuning Li,Jun Liu,Xiaoqing Liu,Ying Wang,Yongfa Zhang,Guojie Zhang,Yongliang Ma,Junhua Li,Xu Wu

In this study, a non-oxidative regeneration strategy based on regeneration-induced dynamic structural reconstruction in a bimetallic Co–Mn-decorated activated carbon system was developed to address the rapid adsorbent deactivation caused by styrene-derived carbonaceous deposits formed during high-temperature regeneration. Co(NO 3 ) 2 and Mn(NO 3 ) 2 were introduced onto activated carbon (AC) via impregnation, where the mild nitrate etching effect facilitated the high dispersion and stable anchoring of metal species. Structural characterization revealed that the initially coexisting metallic Co 0 and spinel CoMn 2 O 4 undergo progressive structural reconstruction and phase evolution during high-temperature cycling, transforming into a defect-rich Co 0 /CoO/MnO mixed interface , while largely preserving the hierarchical pore structure. The optimized 2.5Co-2.5Mn-AC sample exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 630.8 mg/g along with excellent regeneration stability, retaining 76% of its initial capacity after six adsorption-regeneration cycles at 900 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere. Notably, its cycling performance significantly outperformed pristine AC and monometallic counterparts. The regeneration-induced evolution of Co–Mn interfaces is closely correlated with the generation of oxygen vacancies and enhanced cycling durability. Metallic Co 0 and reduced Co–Mn oxide phases promote the catalytic transformation of styrene-derived species, effectively alleviating irreversible pore blockage and suppressing performance attenuation. Overall, this work proposes a non-oxidative regeneration strategy, offering a generalizable design concept for recyclable carbon-based adsorbents.

Self-supported Au–CoMn2O4/Ni foam heterostructure sensor for efficient H2O2 detection and real-time tumor biomarker monitoring

Yi-Lin Zhao,Lu-Hui Li,Li-Na Zhu,Xin Wang

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a crucial oxidative stress biomarker associated with various diseases, especially tumor progression and inflammatory disorders. Accurate monitoring of H₂O₂ is essential for understanding the microenvironmental dynamics involved in disease development. However, traditional metal oxide-based electrochemical sensors often suffer from low catalytic efficiency and nanoparticle aggregation. Herein, we report a high-performance, binder-free H₂O₂ sensor based on a rationally engineered Au–CoMn₂O₄/Ni foam heterostructure. This integrated architecture leverages the conductive 3D Ni foam and an interface-mediated interaction-enhanced charge transfer interface to significantly enhance sensing performance. The resulting sensor exhibits two sensitivities, 3100.04 μA·mM⁻¹·cm⁻² (2–666 μM) and 821.41 μA·mM⁻¹·cm⁻² (1.066–22.166 mM), an ultralow detection limit of 0.036 μM, and a practical linear detection range spanning 2 μM–22.166 mM (R² = 0.99). It also demonstrates excellent selectivity, long-term stability (<3% signal decay over 30 days), and reproducibility (RSD ≈ 2.5%). Notably, the sensor enables real-time electrochemical monitoring of H₂O₂ released by A549 lung cancer cells under phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) stimulation, highlighting its potential as a platform for advanced electrochemical sensing. Importantly, the sensing mechanism can be well interpreted via interfacial structure analysis and electrochemical validation, without requiring theoretical simulations.

Ionothermal synthesis of N-doped carbon supported CoMn2O4 nanoparticles as ORR catalyst in direct glucose alkaline fuel cell

JinHyok Ho,Yang Li,Yexin Dai,TongIl Kim,Jiao Wang,Jun Ren,HakSung Yun,Xianhua Liu

In this paper, CoMn 2 O 4 /NC nanocomposites were synthesized via a facile ionothermal synthesis route, and their electrocatalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was investigated in a direct glucose alkaline fuel cell (DGAFC). The CoMn 2 O 4 spinel supported on nitrogen-doped carbon was successfully synthesized with the assistance of the ionic liquid [C 6 mim]Cl. The nanocomposite exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards ORR. Especially, CoMn 2 O 4 /NC achieved a half wave potential of 0.81 V (vs RHE) and a maximum diffusion limiting current density of 5.2 mA cm −2 , that are very close to commercial Pt/C catalyst (E 1/2  = 0.83 V vs RHE , J d  = 5.0 mA cm −2 ). In addition, the catalytic performance of CoMn 2 O 4 /NC was investigated in DGFC. The fuel cell with a CoMn 2 O 4 /NC air cathode achieved a peak power density of 23.72 W m −2 , which was even superior to that with a commercial Pt/C air cathode. This work revealed that ionic liquid is a viable reaction medium for preparation of catalyst with robust activity.

Construction of electron-rich Co centers and abundant redox pairs in MnO2/CoMn2O4 heterointerfaces for PMS activation and water purification

Shuo Wang,Xingrong Li,Hongyao Zhao,Zichen Ma,Danhong Shang,Linzhi Zhai,Xiang Liu,Feng Zeng,Jianming Pan,Yanyun Wang,Fu Yang

Multiphase catalysts with heterointerfaces have shown compelling potential in catalyzing oxidative mineralization of pollutants. In particular, the interfacial electron communication of heterointerfaces is beneficial for activation of reactant molecules through promotive interfacial electron transfer efficiency. In this study, a MnO 2 /CoMn 2 O 4 heterojunction catalyst was constructed for the electron-rich Co centers and abundant redox pairs. Benefiting from the synergistic interaction between cobalt (Co 2+ /Co 3+ ) and manganese (Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ ) at the active sites, as well as the electron density difference between the interfaces of the two phases, a significant enhancement of the catalytic activity for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was achieved. Systematic characterization analysis revealed that the catalyst has highly active catalytic sites characterized by electron-rich Co 2+ , and the electron-donating property of the high-electron-density Co 2+ active sites in the A site of spinel CoMn 2 O 4 promotes the efficient transfer of electrons and the rapid generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from PMS activation. More exposed catalytic active sites and significantly lower interfacial mass transfer resistance further enhanced the activation performance of the catalysts for bisphenol A degradation by these ROS. The optimal MnO 2 /CoMn 2 O 4 –5 exhibited a optimal BPA degradation activity (86 %, k obs = 0.316 min -1 ) and excellent resistance to anionic interference. The results of free radical quenching experiments indicated that single linear oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) were the main active substances for PMS activation and BPA degradation. This study provides meaningful insights into the improvement of heterojunction interfacial systems for catalytic efficiency enhancement and environmental remediation.

A combined DFT calculation and experimental study of the mechanism of the SCR of NOx by NH3 over Fe-doped CoMn2O4

Yulong Deng,Jiacheng Zheng,Wenting Chen,Xu Wang,Chengliao Deng,Xiaoming Cai,Jinming Cai,Honglin Tan

NH3 selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is a promising method for NOx removal, but its low-temperature effectiveness and narrow operating window limit industrial use. This study demonstrates, through DFT calculations and experimental validation, that Fe-doped CoMn2O4 (CoFe0.1Mn1.9O4) catalysts can effectively enhance catalytic activity. Through the in-depth study of NH3-SCR, it was found that the NH3 adsorption on the catalyst surface might be significantly enhanced by the doping of Fe (Eads = −1.29 eV → −1.42 eV), and it was also further demonstrated that the NH3 had a better adsorption energy on the surface of the CoFe0.1Mn1.9O4 catalyst through the electron difference density (EDD) and partial density of states (PDOS). In addition to this, the CoFe0.1Mn1.9O4 catalyst not only reduces the first step of the dehydrogenation reaction of NH3 (Eα = 0.86 eV → 0.83 eV), but also lowers the energy barrier of the NH3-SCR (Eα = 1.11 eV → 0.86 eV). All these calculations demonstrate that Fe doping has the potential to significantly enhance catalytic performance. CoMn2O4 and Fe-doped CoMn2O4 (CoFe0.02Mn1.98O4) catalysts were synthesized using sol–gel and impregnation techniques, respectively. Through characterization and performance testing, CoFe0.02Mn1.98O4 is found to exhibit a more efficient NOx conversion (87% at 250 °C), and its N2 selectivity is also slightly improved (64%), which matches with the calculation results. In this study, a method to improve the denitrification efficiency of CoMn2O4 spinel catalysts was proposed, which provides a new idea for the development of CoMn2O4 catalysts.

Using photo-induced p-n junction interface effect of CoMn2O4/β-MnO2 oxidase mimetics for colorimetric determination of hydroquinone in seawater

Meiyan Zhu,Xiaotong Dong,Ming Li,Liangbin Jia,Ye Ma,Minggang Zhao,Hongzhi Cui

Detection of pollutants in seawater faces a great challenge of strong interference, and the facile detection method is lacked. The CoMn 2 O 4 /β-MnO 2 p-n junction oxidase mimetics were successfully prepared for colorimetric detection of hydroquinone in seawater. The catalysis ability was enhanced significantly by the photo-induced p-n junction interface effect. It not only promoted the formation of H 2 O 2 by suppressing the recombination of photon-generated carriers, but also provided the driving force for electron transport . The colorimetric detection of hydroquinone was achieved by fading and exhibited good adaptability in seawater. The obtained good recovery rate (97.23%–101.37%) in seawater makes it an inspiring method for practical application. The photo-induced p-n junction interface effect provides an opportunity for developing the application of colorimetric sensing in seawater detection.

In situ construction of N-doped hollow carbon polyhedron embedded with MnO/CoMn2O4 heterojunction nanoparticles by the metal anchoring effect as a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst toward Zn-air batteries

Wenhao Xi,Xia Chen,Tongchen Wu,Jun Pan,Changrong Xia,Zhaopeng Qi,Bizhou Lin

N doped hollow carbon polyhedron with abundant meso- and macropores was in situ constructed. • The metal anchoring effect led to N doped hollow carbon supported MnO/CoMn 2 O 4 heterojunction nanoparticles. • MnO/CoMn 2 O 4 @HNC exhibits an excellent bifunctional activities with a Δ E  = 0.711 V. • The battery has a peak power density of 168.6 mW cm −2 and a capacity of 788 mAh g −1 . Because of the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) occurring at the air cathode, it is critical to develop efficient and sustainable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for enhancing the real performance of Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we report a facile strategy to prepare MnO/CoMn 2 O 4 heterojunction nanoparticles embedded in N-doped hollow carbon polyhedron (MnO/CoMn 2 O 4 @HNC) through the metal anchoring effect. On the one hand, abundant meso- and macropores of the obtained MnO/CoMn 2 O 4 @HNC provide transport channels for oxygen molecules and reaction intermediates in the electrocatalytic process. On the other hand, density functional theory (DFT) calculations disclose that the interface coupling between MnO and CoMn 2 O 4 can facilitate electron transfer, and efficaciously reduce the energy barriers of rate determining steps (RDS) for ORR and OER. Owing to the advantages of structure and composition, MnO/CoMn 2 O 4 @HNC displays excellent electrocatalytic activity with a half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) of 0.85 V for ORR and a potential of 1.561 V at 10 mA cm −2 for OER. The homemade ZABs driven by MnO/CoMn 2 O 4 @HNC perform a high power density of 168.6 mW cm −2 and a superb cycling stability (600 cycles). This work affords a promising route for in situ construction of non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts with a novel structure toward ZABs. Structure–activity relationship and the inhibitory effect of sulfur dioxide and water on nitrous oxide formation in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia over hollow Co3O4@CoMn2O4 catalyst

Yarong Bai,Yaqin Hou,Yaoping Guo,Ning Xiang,Xiaojin Han,Haiqiang Wang,Zhongbiao Wu,Zhanggen Huang

Hollow structures have attracted great interest in many areas for their diverse applications. In this work, a new catalyst with an open and hollow structure (Co 3 O 4 @CoMn 2 O 4 ) is designed for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia (NH 3 -SCR). The as-prepared hollow-structured catalyst provides a high surface area and has thin shells. Owing to its structural benefits, this catalyst exhibited enhanced nitrogen oxides (NO x ) removal activity and better resistance to water and sulfur dioxide than cobalt manganate nanoparticles . It also has proved that both the Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanisms are present in the NH 3 -SCR process in this catalyst. The improved nitrogen selectivity after the addition of water and sulfur dioxide occurs owing to the inhibition of nitrous oxide formation through the Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanisms. The deep insight into the structure–activity relationship and the influence of water and sulfur dioxide on nitrogen selectivity provide a new perspective for constructing high-performance de-NO x catalysts.
