Nitridation of CoWO4/CdS nanocomposite results in the formation of metal nitrides on the surface of CdS. The high electrical conductivity, appropriate binding energy for hydrogen, and Pt-like properties of the surface nitrides promote the H2 evolution performance. Therefore, the optimal performance of nitrided CoWO4/CdS (CoWO4/CdS-N, 3650 μmol·h–1·g–1) is higher than that of Pt/CdS (2948 μmol·h–1·g–1).

A novel Z-scheme heterojunction photoanode, CoWO 4 /BiVO 4 , was synthesized by in situ growth of cobalt tungstate on 3D coral-like bismuth vanadate via a hydrothermal method. This photoanode was applied to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP) in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) system coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Material characterization confirmed the successful formation of the heterojunction, which broadened visible-light absorption and enhanced the separation of photogenerated charges through a built-in electric field. Under optimized conditions, the CoWO 4 /BiVO 4 photoanode degraded 82.6% of 20 ppm CIP within 30 min, exhibiting a kinetic rate constant approximately 7.1 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 , along with good stability and broad degradation capability. Mechanistic studies revealed that holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals ( • O 2 − ) were the dominant active species, while sulfate (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl ( • OH) radicals contributed synergistically. This study provides a feasible strategy for designing efficient heterojunction-based PEC systems for wastewater treatment. Graphical The proposed Z‑scheme charge transfer mechanism and CIP degradation pathway over the CoWO 4 /BiVO 4 heterojunction under visible-light irradiation.

Lewis-basic PO 4 3− regulates interfacial water on CoWO 4 for neutral OER. • PO 4 3− -CoWO 4 reaches 330 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and operates stably for 250 h. • PO 4 3− increases interfacial free water and promotes water dissociation. • Enhanced surface *OH coverage accelerates neutral OER kinetics. • PO 4 3− suppresses Co/W leaching and improves catalyst stability. In neutral water electrolysis, the intrinsically low OH − concentration compels the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to proceed via an additional water dissociation step, leading to sluggish kinetics and high overpotential, which poses a challenge for efficient catalyst design. Introducing Lewis base sites on the catalyst surface can act as proton acceptors, accelerating H OH bond cleavage and thereby promoting the generation and accumulation of *OH. Herein, we incorporated the Lewis base PO 4 3− into CoWO 4 to construct a self-supporting PO 4 3− -CoWO 4 electrode. The incorporated PO 4 3− engages in electronic interactions with Co/W active sites, modulating the local electronic structure. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that PO 4 3− -CoWO 4 exhibits outstanding OER performance in 1 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS), achieving an overpotential of only 330 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and stable operation over 250 h. Mechanistic studies reveal that PO 4 3− optimizes the interfacial water on CoWO 4 , increases the fraction of free water, facilitates water dissociation, and enhances the surface *OH coverage. Moreover, it effectively suppresses the leaching of active Co/W species during OER, thereby improving the structural stability of the catalyst. This interfacial regulation by PO 4 3− synergistically boosts the activity and stability of neutral OER, providing new insights for designing highly efficient neutral water electrolysis catalysts. Lewis base PO 4 3− accelerates water dissociation on CoWO 4 , enabling neutral OER with an overpotential of 330 mV and 250 h durability. Solar-driven water evaporation has been proven to be a promising and efficient method for the energy crisis and clean water shortage issues. Herein, we strategically design and fabricate a novel nonstoichiometric CoWO4–x-deposited foam nickel (NF) membrane (CoWO4–x@NF) that possesses all the desirable optical, thermal, and wetting properties for efficient water evaporation and purification. The broadband absorption of CoWO4–x nanoparticles (NPs) obtained by hydrogen reduction contributes to light-to-heat conversion, while NF with a three-dimensional porous structure can support CoWO4–x NPs and ensure the rapid flow of water molecules during the water evaporation process. We systematically explore and compare the outdoor water evaporation performance of the pure water group, NF group, and CoWO4–x@NF group, and the results show that CoWO4–x@NF performs well under natural sunlight irradiation (water evaporation: 2.91 kg m–2). Significantly, under solar irradiation, the remarkable reduction of Cyanophyta and Euglenophyta in lake water is achieved in the CoWO4–x@NF membrane-administered group, and these two algae are the main factors for eutrophication of the lake water. Our work highlights the great potentials of the CoWO4–x@NF membrane as a device for realizing outdoor solar energy-driven water evaporation and proposes a new strategy for purifying the eutrophication of the lake water.

As electrode material, cobalt-molybdenum oxide (CoMoO 4 ) attracts more attention for energy storage device through its various oxidation states and good electrochemical properties. However, its low conductivity and energy density still hinder its applicability. To integrate its practicability as advanced electrode material in supercapacitor , we chose CoWO 4 as conductive shell material to boost the conductivity on the core surface. Herein, a kind of novel CoMoO 4 @CoWO 4 nanorods core-shell heterostructure is designed with two-step hydrothermal strategy. The CoMoO 4 nanorods fully covered by CoWO 4 nanoparticles provides ultrahigh specific surface area of 331.1 m 2 ·g −1 . Benefiting from synergistic effect , CoMoO 4 @CoWO 4 electrode results superb specific capacitance of 2070 F·g −1 at 0.5 A·g −1 and marvelous stability behavior of 92% after 10,000 cycles. The charge storage mechanism is dominated by the capacitive contribution. Meaningfully, at 0.5 Aˑg −1 , all-solid-state asymmetric CoMoO 4 @CoWO 4 //activate carbon supercapcitor device delivers ultrahigh specific energy of 71.8 Wh·kg −1 at 354 W·kg −1 specific power. Interestingly, two asymmetric devices can illuminate red and green LEDs .

The inefficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers significantly limits the photocatalytic efficiency of nitrogen-enriched graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 5 ). To address this issue, a CoWO 4 /C 3 N 5 type-II heterojunction was fabricated via a water-bath-assisted process followed by calcination, providing an alternative to conventional hydrothermal approaches. The optimal composite (2% CoWO 4 /C 3 N 5 ) demonstrated exceptional photocatalytic activity and broad-spectrum applicability, achieving degradation rates of 71.24% for MO, 82.26% for MB, and 80.09% for RhB within 20 min. It also maintained high efficiency in treating complex mixed-dye systems, underscoring its practical potential. Phytotoxicity tests using mung bean seeds and natural lotus leaves further indicated that the treated dye solution exhibited no obvious toxicity and even promoted root elongation. The improved performance can be attributed to the broadened visible-light response and the efficient charge separation/transfer enabled by the type-II heterojunction, which also contributes to the structural stability of the photocatalyst. PTA-assisted precursor co-evolution couples hollowing with W incorporation. • Hollow CoWO 4 /CoP integrates porosity with strongly coupled heterointerfaces. • CoWO 4 /CoP enables efficient and durable alkaline overall water splitting. Integrating hollow-structure engineering with multicomponent regulation remains challenging for metal–organic framework-derived bifunctional electrocatalysts. Herein, a phosphotungstic acid (PTA)-assisted precursor coevolution strategy is developed to construct hollow CoWO 4 /CoP heterostructures for alkaline overall water splitting. Serving as both an acidic etchant and a W source, PTA couples framework etching and reconstruction with W incorporation into the ZIF-67-derived precursor, thereby coordinating the structural and compositional evolution of the precursor. Subsequent calcination and phosphidation transform the precursor into a porous hollow framework composed of closely integrated CoWO 4 and CoP domains. The hollow architecture increases the accessible electrode–electrolyte interface and facilitates mass transport, while electronic interactions between the oxide and phosphide components promote interfacial charge transfer. Consequently, CoWO 4 /CoP requires overpotentials of only 73 and 218 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 for HER and OER, respectively, and sustains OER operation at 1 A cm −2 for 500 h. When CoWO 4 /CoP is employed as both the anode and cathode, the resulting electrolyzer reaches 10 mA cm⁻² at a cell voltage of 1.52 V and operates continuously for 200 h. This work demonstrates an effective route for coordinating hollow-structure formation and composition regulation in MOF-derived multicomponent electrocatalysts.

Developing highly efficient and economical electrocatalysts with both high activity and excellent stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) remains a significant challenge. In our work, a heterostructure CoP 2 -Fe 2 P//CoWO 4 catalyst has been successfully integrated onto Ni foam via a two-step hydrothermal reaction and a phosphorization process. Electrochemical evaluations confirm a synergistic catalytic effect between CoP 2 and Fe 2 P. The CoP 2 -Fe 2 P//CoWO 4 catalyst exhibits enhanced HER catalytic activity across a wide pH range, requiring relatively low overpotentials of only 42, 138 and 32 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 under alkaline, neutral and acidic conditions, respectively. Meanwhile, for the EOR, the CoP 2 -Fe 2 P//CoWO 4 catalyst requires a potential of only 1.37 V to achieve 100 mA cm −2 , which is much lower than that required for the OER (1.53 V). Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Raman spectroscopy reveal that high-valence metal species CoOOH and FeOOH are likely the real active species responsible for water dissociation and EOR, respectively. This work may provide a new pathway for heterostructured catalysts based on transition metal phosphides in the field of small-molecule electrolysis.

High-quality CoWO 4 sensing electrodes (SE) were synthesized via a facile and green molten salt method to develop high-performance NH 3 sensors. XRD, SEM, and TEM were employed to systematically characterize the phase composition and morphology of the products obtained under various synthesis conditions. The superior sensing performance of the CoWO 4 -SE (prepared at 350 ℃ for 60 min) was maintained throughout the 250–450 ℃ operating range. Specifically, at an optimal temperature of 300 ℃, the sensor exhibited a high response of −66.5 mV to 100 ppm NH 3 , a sensitivity of −47 mV/decade, and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 5 ppm. Furthermore, the sensor exhibited strong performance in terms of repeatability and selectivity for common interfering gases. Electrochemical analyses, such as polarization and Tafel measurements, confirmed that the mixed potential theory operated in the sensing mechanism.

With the rapid advancement of modern industry and population growth, unrestrained discharge of industrial effluent and domestic sewage has caused severe environmental pollution, which poses a severe challenge to human habitat. Owing to the unique eco-friendly characteristics, photocatalytic technology has emerged as a highly promising approach in the wastewater treatment very recently. Z-scheme heterojunction ternary photocatalysts of “ x · AgCl/ y · CoWO₄/Ag” were ingeniously designed and developed in this study, exhibiting exceptionally high photocatalytic activity for degrading micropollutants in wastewater compared with single-component photocatalysts. For instance, photocatalytic activity of AgCl/CoWO₄/Ag (reflected by the reaction kinetic parameter k ) is 7.7 times that of AgCl and 313 times that of CoWO₄, respectively. The experimental results and analysis revealed a typical Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism in these ternary photocatalyst heterojunctions, thereby confirming the structural characteristics of Z-scheme heterojunction. Furthermore, the ternary photocatalysts retained the reaction activity with virtually no change after undergoing five cycles of catalytic experiments, highlighting its excellent stability. Consequently, an underlying mechanism was proposed herein to account for the enhanced photocatalytic properties. It is believed that such ternary Z-scheme heterojunction materials expand halide-based heterojunction construction methods and promise significant implications for environmental remediation.

Exploring high-performance and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts is crucial for developing highly efficient overall water splitting cells. In this work, a facile and cheap co-precipitation method, which is compatible with large-scale production, is applied to prepare amorphous Fe-doped CoWO4 bifunctional electrocatalysts. Low overpotentials of 259 and 118 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for the OER and HER in 1 M KOH are found, respectively. Moreover, no detectable potential decay is observed at 50 mA cm−2 for at least 15 h, revealing its excellent long-term stability. Finally, a highly efficient overall water splitting cell is assembled with amorphous Fe-doped CoWO4 as a bifunctional electrocatalyst. A low cell voltage of 1.55 V is required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which surpasses the benchmark IrO2‖Pt/C cell.
