This paper introduces a facile method to develop core-shell nanocomposite Cu/(Cu 2 O/CuO) through gradually oxidation on Cu nanocomposite precursors. As-prepared catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the reaction of water oxidation reaction (WOR). Comparing with the reported catalyst, Cu/(Cu 2 O/CuO) posed one of the highest O 2 evolution around 7700 μmol g -1 ·h -1 . By analyzing the composition of catalysts in each reaction stages, the evolution pathway of Cu towards Cu 2 O/CuO and the different roles of each component in catalytic water oxidation reactions were deeply studied. In presence of high conductive Cu element and excellent light absorption Cu 2 O, the photo generated electron and holes can be effectively separated and greatly improve the efficiency of the catalyst. The evolution process and synergistic effects of the three components play a crucial role in improving photocatalytic efficiency, which promoting the nanocomposite to be a highly efficient core-shell catalyst for WOR.

The integral catalytic impeller can simultaneously improve reaction efficiency and avoid the problem of catalyst separation, which has great potential in applying heterogeneous catalysis. This paper introduced a strategy of combining electroless copper plating with 3D printing technology to construct a pluggable copper-based integral catalytic agitating impeller (Cu-ICAI) and applied it to the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The obtained Cu-ICAI exhibits very excellent catalytic activity. The 4-NP conversion rate reaches almost 100% within 90 s. Furthermore, the Cu-ICAI can be easily pulled out from the reactor to be repeatedly used more than 15 times with high performance. Energy-dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterizations show that the catalyst obtained by electroless copper plating is a ternary Cu-Cu2O-CuO composite catalyst, which is conducive to the electron transfer process. This low-cost, facile, and versatile strategy, combining electroless plating and 3D printing, may provide a new idea for the preparation of the integral impeller with other metal catalytic activities.

Industrial nitrogen fixation processes, such as the Haber-Bosch and Ostwald processes, are energy-intensive and cause environmental issues. Here, a photothermal evaporation catalytic evaporator was constructed using a core-shell Cu/Cu 2 O (Copper/ Copper(I) oxide) catalyst supported on carbon foam (CF) for efficient overall nitrogen fixation under air. The evaporator utilized the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Cu nanoparticles and the excellent photothermal conversion capability of CF. It could achieve a surface temperature of 362.2°C under full spectrum light intensity of 1500 mW·cm −2 . The gaseous reaction environment generated by this photothermal evaporator overcame the low solubility of conventional photocatalytic N 2 in water and enhanced mass transfer. The Cu/Cu 2 O interface promoted charge separation, and the hot carriers from Cu nanoparticles accelerated the activation of N 2 . Meanwhile, the charge transfer process between the interfaces (Cu 0 -e - →Cu + , O 2- -e - →OV (Oxygen vacancy), Cu + +e - →Cu 0 , O 2 filled OV) made it possible to ensure the structural integrity throughout the reaction cycle. Under air conditions, the evaporator yield rate of NH 4 + and NO 3 - reached 691.96 μmol g −1 h −1 and 423.87 μmol g −1 h −1 , respectively, surpassing most reported catalysts. In-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the interface of Cu/Cu 2 O facilitated electron transfer to N 2 , weakening the N N bond and lowering reaction barriers. This work demonstrated a synergistic photothermal-evaporation strategy for efficient nitrogen fixation, providing a sustainable pathway for overall nitrogen fixation in air.

Sodium vanadate have been widely used as a lithium-ion battery anode. However, its further application is restricted by the capacity attenuation during cycles because of its easy solubility in electrolyte, huge structural change, and low conductivity. Here, a lithium-ion battery electrode based on Cu-Cu2O coated Na5V12O32 nanowire arrays using a predischarge-electrodeposition method is freported. Remarkably, in the Cu-Cu2O@Na5V12O32 electrode, the Na5V12O32 nanowires function as the skeleton, and Cu-Cu2O nanoparticles function as the coating layer. At a specific current of 50 mA g−1, the composite electrode exhibits discharge and charge capacity of 837 and 821 mAh g−1 after 80 cycles, respectively, which is much higher than that of the Na5V12O32 nanowires electrode. This research provides a new pathway to explore electrode materials with enhanced electrochemical performance.

Cu 2 O, as a cost-effective chloride ion (Cl − ) storage electrode material, has shown great potential in Cl − removal applications. However, in the electrochemical process, Cu 2 O as the anode is easily oxidized and dissolved by free copper ions (Cu 2+ ), leading to the loss of copper components and causing electrode performance degradation. In this work, we introduced a three-dimensional (3D) self-supporting polyvinyl alcohol/carbon nanotube (PVA/CNTs) conductive hydrogel as the carrier of Cu 2 O for capacitive deionization (CDI). Among them, PVA acts as an antioxidant to inhibit the conversion of Cu 2 O to free Cu 2+ , CNTs act as the growth carrier of copper particles to make them more evenly distributed in the electrode materials, and the 3D hydrogel structure can accommodate a large amount of water, making Cu 2 O fully contact with chloride ions in water and store them. At 1.4 V, the Cu/Cu 2 O@PVA/CNTs conductive hydrogels (Cu@CHs) demonstrate 49.58 ± 3.27 mg g −1 Cl − storage capacity and significantly superior areal Cl − storage capacity on the 13.66 ± 0.68 mg-Cl − cm −2 , and there was no significant performance degradation in 100 cycles. This study, using PVA as the core component, proposes a simple strategy for constructing high areal performance 3D materials and provides optimization ideas for solving the oxidation dissolution problem of faradaic materials in the CDI process.

The deployment of potassium ion (K+) sensors in demanding environments, such as marine resource utilization, energy storage systems, and industrial processes, is severely limited by the thermal instability of state-of-the-art sensing materials. Traditional ionophores like valinomycin and crown ethers irreversibly lose activity above 50 °C, rendering them unsuitable for applications involving significant temperature fluctuations. Herein, we report a breakthrough all-solid-state K+ sensor engineered to overcome this fundamental limitation. The sensor architecture integrates a Cu2O semiconductor as an ion-electron transduction layer and a potassium–copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF(K)) active layer, forming a robust Cu–Cu2O–CuHCF heterojunction. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations guided the rational design, predicting superior K+ selectivity over Na+ based on adsorption energetics and d-band center analysis. A one-step electrochemical synthesis protocol was developed to fabricate this heterostructure with comprehensive characterization (EIS, XPS, XRD, SEM) confirming its successful formation and interfacial properties. The sensor demonstrates exceptional analytical performance, operating reliably within a wide temperature range of 25–100 °C and maintaining high selectivity for K+ in high-salinity seawater matrices. Furthermore, to bridge the gap between laboratory data and field deployment, we developed and open-sourced a Potential–Temperature–Concentration (PTC) machine learning model based on a back-propagation neural network. This work provides a new paradigm for designing robust electrochemical sensors for harsh environments, combining theoretical material design with intelligent data processing for practical industrial applications.

The development of highly efficient, economical, and sustainable electrocatalysts based on non-noble metals for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of vital significance for large-scale renewable energy storage. Herein, an effective synthetic strategy for the construction of MoO 2 nanoflowers decorated with metallic Cu/Cu 2 O nanoparticles (NPs) on Ni foam (NF) (Cu 2 O/MoO 2 @Cu/NF) with a simple two-step method is reported. The prepared Cu 2 O/MoO 2 @Cu/NF as an electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding reactivity and remarkable stability in alkaline solution. The onset overpotential of Cu 2 O/MoO 2 @Cu/NF approaches 0 V. An overpotential as low as 32 mV is obtained to afford a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , comparable with Pt/C catalysts. The Tafel slope is low at 40 mV dec −1 as well. The involvement of zero-valent Cu greatly reduces the resistance. The well-dispersed Cu/Cu 2 O NPs on the sphere-like MoO 2 nanoflowers exaggerate the surface area. The ringent channels provide the fast release of evolved bubbles. Furthermore, the enhanced conductivity and large surface area lead to significant activity in HER. Herein, a novel design and facile synthesis of a highly efficient electrocatalyst with catalytic activity that is comparable to a Pt/C catalyst is provided.

In this work, reticular-vein-like Cu@Cu2O/rGO nanocomposites have been synthesized by direct redox reaction of Cu and graphene oxide (GO) through a hydrothermal method where the macropore Cu sheets served as the precursor of reticular-vein-like Cu2O as well as the reducing agent of GO. FESEM and TEM were employed to characterize the morphology of the as-prepared samples. The results reveal that the reticular-vein-like Cu@Cu2O nanocomposites are homogeneously anchored onto rGO and act like the skeleton supporting the rGO sheets to avoid its aggregation or stacking. Electrochemical tests show that the Cu@Cu2O/rGO modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation in both alkaline medium and human serum, including a wide linear range (0.005–7 mM), a low detection limit (0.5 μM), a rapid response (<2 s) as well as good stability and repeatability. More importantly, the interference from the commonly interfering species such as lactose, fructose, ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) can be effectively avoided. All these results indicate this novel nanostructured material is a promising candidate for non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

The hydrodeoxygenation of furfural to 2-methylfuran is of great significance for biomass valorization. However, the design of efficient catalysts based on non-noble metals is still a huge challenge for this transformation. In this work, a uniformly dispersed Cu-Cu 2 O/N-RGO nanocomposite was assembled via microwave assisted reduction and ammonia evaporation synthetic strategy. Under the optimum conditions, the yield of 2-methylfuran reached 95.5%, and there was no catalyst deactivation was observed within 5 cycles. The characterization results confirmed that the activity of the catalyst was mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of surface Cu 0 and Cu + species in catalyst, which were originated from partial reduction of CuO species due to the strong interaction between Cu precursors and support. Furthermore, this strong interaction also promised stability of the catalyst which could immobilize copper particles to resist leaching.

Fabricating efficient copper-based adsorbents for radioactive iodine removal is crucial for environmental protection and waste volume reduction, particularly in the treatment of radioactive waste from hospitals. In this study, a composite of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) supported by Cu-Cu 2 O nanocrystals (Cu-Cu 2 O/RGO-3) was synthesized via a one-step method and evaluated for its effectiveness in iodide removal from water. The composite was comprehensively characterized using XRD, SEM, FT-IR, and XPS analyses. The effects of copper content, pH, contact time, iodide concentration, temperature, and coexisting anions on iodide uptake were systematically investigated. In the Cu-Cu 2 O/RGO-3 composite, copper primarily existed as metallic Cu, along with a small amount of Cu 2 O. Cu-Cu 2 O/RGO-3 exhibited a significantly higher I - adsorption capacity compared to Cu powder, effectively reducing I - concentrations from 8.6 to 0.029 mg/L within just 3 min, demonstrating a rapid uptake rate for trace I - . Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity reached 152.1 mg/g at pH 7.0, surpassing that of many reported copper-based adsorbents. The composite showed selectivity in the presence of competing ions like Cl - , NO 3 - , and SO 4 2- , but HCO 3 - at higher concentrations inhibited I - adsorption. Post-adsorption analysis revealed that iodine was present solely as CuI. XPS analysis indicated that residual carboxyl groups in RGO facilitated the oxidation of Cu and promoted redox reactions between Cu(OH) 2 and Cu, providing multiple pathways for generating additional Cu + ions, thereby enhancing I - adsorption. This study offers a practical approach for modifying carbon-based materials with copper compounds, emphasizing the potential of copper-based materials for effective iodide purification in wastewater treatment.

The redox properties of electrode materials play a vital role in electrochemical performance. Fabrication of electrode materials with multiple oxidation species is highly desired for ultrasensitive glucose sensing. Herein, multivalent Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO/C (Cu/C) nanocomposites were successfully prepared for non-enzymatic glucose sensing by in situ pyrolysis of Cu metal-organic framework (Cu 3 (BTC) 2 ·3H 2 O, Cu-BTC) at a critical temperature. Structure characterizations showed that the nanocomposites maintained the original morphology of Cu-BTC crystals and exhibited mesoporous structures. Meanwhile, multiple Cu species containing Cu, Cu 2 O and CuO were generated simultaneously, which were tightly pinned on the ligand-derived carbon layers. Thus, under the synergistic effect of multivalent Cu species, mesoporous structure and intense interface contact, the sensing platforms based on Cu/C nanocomposites exhibited good glucose detection performance with a wide linear range of 0.005-2.0 mM, ultrasensitivity of 147.65 μA mM -1 cm -2 , low detection limit of 6.31 μM (S/N = 3), and favorable anti-interference properties and stability. Especially, the Cu/C sensing platform showed excellent recoveries of glucose when used to monitor glucose in real sample of honey. The good electrochemical activities of Cu/C nanocomposites render them promising candidates for sensors and other applications. Graphical abstract

Designing efficient and stable photocathodes remains a critical challenge for advancing high-performance photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) systems toward simultaneous pollutant removal and energy conversion. Herein, we report a novel Cu-Cu 2 O/carbon nanofibers (CNFs) photocathode, synthesized via an electrospinning-calcination method, in which the Cu-Cu 2 O heterostructures are uniformly anchored onto conductive CNFs rich in oxygen vacancies. As a proof of concept, a dual-photoelectrode PFC system was constructed to evaluate the performance of the Cu-Cu 2 O/CNFs photocathode. The PFC achieved an 83 % degradation rate for Rhodamine B (RhB) in 2 h and a maximum power density (P max ) of 42.99 μW/cm 2 , markedly outperforming the commercial Cu 2 O-based cathode PFC system. Moreover, the PFC system assembled with the Cu-Cu 2 O/CNFs photocathode exhibited consistent degradation efficiency and power output over multiple cycles, demonstrating that the cathode plays a crucial role in ensuring the long-term stability of the system. Experimental and theoretical calculation results confirm that the unique local electronic structure and coordination environment at the Cu/Cu 2 O interface promote O 2 adsorption and lower the energy barrier for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This work demonstrates a rational strategy for designing high-efficiency Cu-based photocathodes and offers new insights into optimizing photoelectrocatalytic materials for environmental and energy applications.
