Copper-based agents have been utilized widely in a range of commercial antibacterial products due to their superior release-killing antibacterial properties. However, the environmental concerns associated with the release of Cu2+ ions have restricted their application in textiles. In this study, Cu3P-ZnO nanocomposites with enzyme-like properties were synthesized through the phosphating of CuO-ZnO, which were employed to functionalize the surface of cotton fabric using a dipping–padding–drying method. The physicochemical properties of the functional cotton fabrics were characterized using various techniques. The antibacterial efficacy of Cu3P-ZnO/cotton was assessed against Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus bacteria. Remarkably, Cu3P-ZnO/cotton demonstrated significant antibacterial activity and stability without necessitating auxiliary conditions; achieving >99% antibacterial effectiveness against both E. coli and S. aureus, while retaining 94.7% efficiency after 50 washing cycles. The underlying antibacterial mechanism was elucidated, revealing that reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially singlet oxygen (1O2), plays a crucial role in mediating the antibacterial action of Cu3P-ZnO/cotton in absence of light, whereas direct contact between Cu3P-ZnO and bacteria serve secondary functions in this process. This research provides valuable insights into the design of ROS-mediated antibacterial agents for applications in antimicrobial textiles.

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) to ammonia (NH 3 ) presents a sustainable pathway for wastewater treatment and green NH 3 synthesis. However, developing catalysts that simultaneously achieve high activity, selectivity, and stability over a wide pH range remains a challenge due to the inadequate supply of active hydrogen (*H). Herein, an efficient Cu 3 P hollow nanocubes (Cu 3 P-HNCs) electrocatalyst has been successfully designed for high-performance NO 3 RR over a wide pH range. The as-prepared Cu 3 P-HNCs exhibit excellent performance for NO 3 RR, achieving NH 3 yield rates of 19.77, 26.04 and 12.39 mg h −1 mg cat −1 in neutral, alkaline and acidic electrolytes, respectively. The experimental results and theoretical calculations prove that the hollow cubic architecture endows the Cu 3 P-HNCs with a high specific surface area and multiple catalytic active sites, while phosphoration induces a favorable downshift in the d-band center. This electronic optimization weakens intermediate adsorption and effectively reduces the energy barrier of the key reaction step, ultimately leading to the distinct NO 3 RR performance. This study elucidates a synergistic design strategy and offers insights into designing efficient and robust electrocatalysts for NO 3 RR across a broad pH range.

Clarifying the ambiguous correlation between the coordination/electronic state and reactivity of heterogeneous catalysts is crucial in designing high-performance water-splitting catalysts. Herein, the metal–support interaction is constructed by interfacial coupling of iridium (Ir) cluster and metal-rich copper monophosphide (IrCL@Cu3P). Based on refined structural characterization and theoretical calculations, the interfacial coupling leads to shrinkage in the Ir–Ir bond distance and significant charge transfer from the cluster to the substrate, which brings about an electronic perturbation and breaks the improper charge distribution, promoting water-splitting kinetics. The fabricated catalyst yields superior bifunctional activities toward hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions with overpotentials as low as 21 and 216 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline electrolyte, respectively. Moreover, the practical application is verified in the alkaline membrane electrode assembly, which shows an electrolyzer voltage of as low as 1.94 V at 1 A cm−2 with the fabricated catalyst working as both the anode and cathode. Precisely tuning electronic perturbation by interfacial coupling could provide valuable insights into designing highly efficient water splitting catalysts and beyond.

We successfully synthesize Cu 3 P nanosheets and granular Ni 2 P nanocrystals on the surface of commercial carbon fiber cloth (CFC) (Cu 3 P/CFC and Ni 2 P/CFC) respectively by a vapor-phase hydrothermal route. The as-synthesized Ni 2 P/CFC and Cu 3 P/CFC as electrodes all show the bifunctional electrocatalytic performances towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), simultaneously all demonstrating the electrocatalytic activities of the furfural hydrogenation reaction (FHR) and furfural oxidation reaction (FOR) in alkaline media. Comparatively, the Cu 3 P/CFC exhibits higher FHR activity with almost ∼100% selectivity of the furfuryl alcohol (FAL) product and high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.0%–98.0% over the applied potential range of −0.05 to −0.55 V ( vs . RHE), while the Ni 2 P/CFC indicates higher FOR activity with almost ∼100% selectivity of furoic acid (FA) product and FE of 90.0%–98.0% at the applied potential of 1.2–1.7 V ( vs . RHE) in alkaline electrolyte containing 50 mM furfural. The DFT calculations results reveal that the (1–10) dominated Cu 3 P can obtain higher hydrogen coverage but restricted H 2 desorption compared to the (001) dominated Ni 2 P, therefore the adsorbed active hydrogen (H) atoms from water can be effectively used for the FHR process, resulting in high FE and current density. The superior FOR activity of the Ni 2 P/CFC is mainly stemmed from the formed high valence state Ni species during electrocatalysis. Thanks to the superior FHR performance of Cu 3 P/CFC and FOR activity of Ni 2 P/CFC, a two-electrode H-type electrocatalysis system assembled with the Cu 3 P/CFC as cathode and Ni 2 P/CFC as anode can be constructed for simultaneously electrocatalytic production of FAL and FA with almost ∼100% selectivity in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte containing 50 mM furfural in each chamber under the given experimental conditions, demonstrating high FE of 97%–99%.

The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction can convert environmental pollutants into high value−added ammonia under ambient temperature and pressure, providing a green pathway for sustainable ammonia synthesis and nitrate wastewater purification. Herein, a novel CuSn/Cu 3 P@NF composite catalyst is deposited on nickel foam via the electrodeposition strategy, which can be utilized for nitrate reduction reaction to ammonia. The designed CuSn/Cu 3 P@NF catalyst delivers a remarkable ammonia yield rate of 12.9 mg h −1 cm −2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 95.4%. A series of characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal that the synergistic introduction of Sn and P elements modulates the electronic structure of catalytic active sites, promotes water dissociation to generate abundant adsorbed hydrogen species, and reduces the free energy barrier along the nitrate reduction reaction pathway, thereby enhancing the catalytic performance. This work demonstrates an effective strategy to boost nitrate reduction reaction performance via synergistic alloying-phosphorization regulation of components and interfacial structures, and provides a new insight into the rational design of high-efficiency catalysts for nitrate reduction reaction to ammonia.

Developing high-efficient and Earth-abundant electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is strongly desired for electrochemical water splitting but remains a considerable challenge. Herein, we propose a 3D hierarchical Fe(PO 3 ) 2 @Cu 3 P heterostructure nanotube arrays on Cu foams for promising HER catalysts. The HER performance can be tuned by changing FeCl 3 concentrations and the optimized cathode exhibits excellent HER activity in 1 M KOH with a low overpotentials of 108 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 84 mV dec −1 . Furthermore, this electrode delivers high electrochemical durability with stable operation for 24 h. Such high performance can be ascribed to the unique hierarchical heterostructure with large electrochemical surface area, synergistic effect and fast electron transport . Our study can provide new inspiration for rational construction of copper-based hierarchical nanomaterials for HER electrodes and other energy-related applications.

Up to now, nickel-based materials have been considered as the most promising catalysts for urea oxidation reaction (UOR). However, the inevitable self-oxidation from Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ severely limited their activity during UOR. To trigger the UOR occurred before self-oxidation of Ni species by altering reaction pathways, here synergistic dual-site of Cu 3 P-NiO x on black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets is constructed by a facile self-designed electrosynthesis method, where exfoliation of bulky BP into nanosheets and formation of multivalent Ni or Cu precursor are both obtained during electrosynthesis process. The best Cu 3 P-NiO x /BP shows the potential of 1.378 V under light irradiation at 10 mA cm −2 (without IR compensation), 187 mV lower than that in oxygen evolution reaction. This UOR activity of Cu 3 P-NiO x /BP is superior to Cu 3 P/BP or NiO x /BP, which is attributed to synergistic dual-site constructure of Cu 3 P-NiO x . In-situ and ex-situ characterizations suggest that in-situ generated Cu 3 P promotes adsorption and activation of urea molecules, and takes synergistic effect with NiO x , which makes urea oxidation undergoes a direct complete oxidation process. Moreover, with application of light illumination, excited photoelectrocatalytic effect by Cu 3 P further greatly enhances the activity for UOR. This study provides insights to the designing principles for optimizing reaction pathways toward small nucleophile molecule oxidation and effective strategies to develop efficient UOR photoelectrocatalysts.

We report here the fabrication of CuO nanowires and their use as efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) or as precursor for preparation of Cu3P nanowires for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The surface-bound Cu(OH)2 nanowires are in situ grown on a three-dimensional copper foam (CF) by anodic treatment, which are then converted to CuO nanowires by calcination in air. The direct growth of nanowires from the underlying conductive substrate can eliminate the use of any conductive agents and binders, which ensures good electrical contact between the electrocatalyst and the conductive substrate. The hierarchically nanostructured Cu-based electrode exhibits excellent catalytic performance toward OER in 1 M KOH solution. Phosphorization of the CuO/CF electrode generates the Cu3P/CF electrode, which can act as an excellent electrocatalyst for HER in 1 M KOH. An alkaline electrolyzer is constructed using CuO and Cu3P nanowires coated copper foams as anode and cathode, which can realize overall water splitting with a current density of 102 mA/cm2 at an applied cell voltage of 2.2 V.

Interface engineering is a method of enhancing catalytic activity while maintaining a material's surface properties. Thus, we explored the interface effect mechanism via a hierarchical structure of MoP/CoP/Cu3P/CF. Remarkably, the heterostructure MoP/CoP/Cu3P/CF demonstrates an outstanding overpotential of 64.6 mV at 10 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 68.2 mV dec−1 in 1 M KOH. DFT calculations indicate that the MoP/CoP interface in the catalyst exhibited the most favorable H* adsorption characteristics (−0.08 eV) compared to the pure phases of CoP (0.55 eV) and MoP (0.22 eV). This result can be attributed to the apparent modulation of electronic structures within the interface domains. Additionally, the CoCH/Cu(OH)2/CF‖MoP/CoP/Cu3P/CF electrolyzer demonstrates excellent overall water splitting performance, achieving 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH solution with a modest voltage of only 1.53 V. This electronic structure adjustment via interface effects provides a new and efficient approach to prepare high-performance hydrogen production catalysts.

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are often considered as a cost-effective replacement for precious metal catalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, the fibers are produced by combining coal with electrospinning technology, and then undergoing a pre-oxidation process for transforming into pre-oxidized coal-based fibers. Subsequently, CuCo-metal organic framework (CuCo-MOF) is grown on the pre-oxidized coal-based fibers using solvothermal method, and the Cu 3 P/Co 2 P/coal-based carbon fibers (Cu 3 P/Co 2 P/C-CFs) composite catalyst is successfully fabricated by phosphating at low temperature and carbonizing at high temperature. The uniformly grown nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of C-CFs enhance the electrochemically active area, while the electron transfer between Cu 3 P and Co 2 P effectively modulates the electronic structure, increasing the catalytic activity of the catalyst for HER. In addition, the flexible C-CFs not only serve as self-supporting electrode but also effectively inhibit the agglomeration of Cu 3 P/Co 2 P NPs. Remarkably, the overpotential of Cu 3 P/Co 2 P/C-CFs is 83 mV at 10 mA cm −2 current density for HER in 0.5 mol L −1 H 2 SO 4 solution. This study presents promising strategies for the high value-added utilization of coal and the synthesis of highly effective non-precious metal catalysts.

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) provides a promising method for ammonia (NH 3 ) producing. It is urgent to develop efficient catalysts with improved NO 3 RR performance. In this paper, Cu 3 P@Co(OH) 2 /CF heterostructure catalyst is constructed by electrodeposition of cobalt hydroxide (Co(OH) 2 ) nanosheet on the surface of copper phosphide (Cu 3 P) nanorod , and used as a self-supporting cathode for electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia. The NH 3 yield reaches 0.19 mmol h −1 cm −2 at a potential of −0.17 V vs. RHE, and the faraday efficiency (FE) is 86.7 %. The study manifests that the built-in electric field generated at the p-n heterojunction interface optimizes the electron migration kinetics, and promotes the adsorption of nitrate and the convention of intermediate product NO 2 − into ammonia. As a consequence, the selectivity of NH3 is improved. The Zn-nitrate battery is assembled with the designed catalyst as the cathode, to reach a peak power density of 5.16 mW cm −2 . The prepared catalyst realizes three effective functions: power output, ammonia synthesis , and nitrate pollutants treatment.

Zinc–air batteries (ZABs) are considered a promising energy storage technology due to their high energy density and environmental friendliness. However, the development of efficient and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts remains a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of a highly efficient CoP/Cu3P@NC catalyst using a Zn-MOF template, which was transformed into N- and C-doped bimetallic phosphides via high-temperature phosphating. The CoP/Cu3P@NC-based ZAB exhibits remarkable performance with an open-circuit voltage of 1.50 V, a peak power density of 215 mW cm−2, and a specific capacity of 691 mA h gzn−1, outperforming conventional Pt/C-based ZABs. The catalyst maintained 93.5% of its initial activity after 300 h of cycling, demonstrating its excellent long-term stability. Furthermore, CoP/Cu3P@NC was applied in flexible ZABs, achieving a power density of 74 mW cm−2 and showing stable performance under various bending conditions. The superior performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of Co and Cu, optimized structural properties, and high porosity, enhancing mass transfer and oxygen activation. These results suggest that CoP/Cu3P@NC is a highly promising ORR catalyst for next-generation ZABs, offering both high efficiency and durability in flexible and conventional energy storage applications.
