Heterogeneous nano-metal structures are widely used in the field of photocatalysis as an efficient cocatalyst, but the structure–activity relationship has not been elucidated clearly. In this work, a classical CuCo@C nanoparticle with a core of bimetallic CuCo and a carbon shell was used as a cocatalyst to explore and reveal the mechanism of interfacial effect for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . It was found that the bimetallic CuCo had a heterogeneous structure with abundant Cu-Co interfaces. The desirable visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of CuCo@C/g-C 3 N 4 was much higher than that of Cu@C/g-C 3 N 4 , Co@C/g-C 3 N 4 , and superior to that of the control group loaded with 1 wt% Pt (Pt/g-C 3 N 4 ). According to the experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations, electrons were enriched at the Cu-Co interface, which can promote the electron-hole pairs separation and accelerate charge transfer of the g-C 3 N 4 host photocatalysts. On the other hand, the surface carbon layer and Cu-Co interface modulated the H adsorption free energy on the CuCo@C, which was favorable for hydrogen evolution. It is conceivable that further investigating and tuning different metal interfaces will facilitate the large-scale application of bimetallic cocatalysts.

Cu, Co and Zn modified N-doped porous carbons (CuCo/Zn@NPC) are prepared using a polymetallic homogeneous doping and self-templating method as high performance non-noble metal catalysts for the hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FAL). The CuCo/Zn@NPC-600 catalyst after treatment at 600 °C shows a superior catalytic activity with nearly 100% conversion of FF and an almost 100% selectivity of FAL using H2 at 140 °C. Meanwhile in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) using 2-propanol as a H-donor, the conversion of FF reaches 95.8% and the selectivity of FAL is 99.1%. The results show that the Zn dopant leads to 37.3 times higher yield on the CuCo/Zn@NPC-600 catalyst than that on CuCo@NPC-600, and 2.3 times higher than that on Co/Zn@NPC-600 with Cu dopants. The efficient activity of the CuCo/Zn@NPC-600 catalyst is mainly due to the highly dispersed metal nanoparticles, the advanced porous structure resulting from Zn escape from the precursor template, and the synergistic effect between Cu and Co. Furthermore, the CuCo/Zn@NPC-600 catalyst exhibits good recyclability in FF hydrogenation in four cycle tests. The advanced synthesis method using a homogeneous doping and self-templating strategy sheds light on preparing effective catalysts for hydrogenation of biomass-based compounds.

Abstract Nanostructured CuCo-LDH/CNT composites were successfully synthesized according to the co-precipitation method and firstly used for higher alcohol synthesis. The structural characterization and morphological observation demonstrated that CuCo-LDHs were in situ grown on the CNTs surface, and the CNTs support favored the dispersion of LDHs; meanwhile, a mechanism for growing the LDHs on CNTs was proposed, and the reported methods could be expanded to prepare other LDHs/CNT composites. After reduction, due to the strong interaction between CuCo-LDHs and CNTs, Cu–Co alloy, nanoparticles with small and uniform size were obtained and highly dispersed on the Al 2 O 3 matrix and CNTs surface. In particular, the high thermal conductivity of CNTs suppressed the formation of hot spots, thus effectively inhibited the generation of hydrocarbons and CO 2 . The resultant CuCo-LDHs/CNTs composite exhibited better catalytic performance and higher selectivity to C 2+ alcohols than the pristine LDHs did, which turned out to be one of the best catalysts for HAS. A CuCo-LDH/FeOCl nanocomposite for macroscopic superlubricity is designed. • Stable macroscopic superlubricity is achieved under elevated loads (up to 75 N). • An ultralow friction coefficient ( ca. 0.0037) is realized in PEG200. Achieving stable superlubricity under elevated loads remains a significant challenge due to the fragility of conventional lubrication interfaces. Herein, a hierarchical CuCo layered double hydroxide/FeOCl nanocomposite is rationally designed via a microwave-assisted method to realize macroscopic superlubricity under elevated applied loads. The ultralow friction coefficient of ca . 0.0037 and the maintained superlubricity under loads up to 75 N may be attributed to the synergistic effects of the layered architecture, interlayer interactions and reactions, and tribochemical processes. Detailed characterization suggests that tribochemical evolution occurs during sliding, accompanied by possible Fe-O-M (M = Cu, Co) interfacial interactions, which may facilitate shear-induced structural evolution and interlayer sliding. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect between FeOCl and CuCo-LDH may contribute to the formation of a protective tribofilm at the friction interface. Repeated start-stop tests indicate that the real-time COF mainly fluctuates within 0.001–0.0075, maintaining stable superlubricity. This work provides new insights into the design of high-performance lubricating materials and offers a promising strategy for achieving stable superlubricity under elevated loads. Taking into account that the selective ring-opening of the furan ring limits the efficiency of direct conversion of furfural to 1,5-pentanediol, a Zr-doped CuCo-based catalyst was developed to regulate the multistep reaction of furfural to 1,5-pentanediol in one pot and boost the overall step yield. Through the efficient synergistic action of multiple active sites, 56% yield of 1,5-pentanediol from furfural in one pot was obtained by Cu4.5Co3.5Zr1, surpassing other nonprecious metal catalysts. The improvement in the catalytic effect of this catalyst is attributed to doping CuCo-based species with Zr. The introduced Zr species not only provide medium-strength base sites but also promote the high dispersion of Cu atoms; both factors promote the conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. Besides, Zr species promote the reduction of Cu/Co oxygen species, enriching oxygen vacancies, and combined with Co2+/Co3+ create an optimal Brønsted/Lewis acid ratio in Cu4.5Co3.5Zr1. Metals adjacent to oxygen vacancies adsorb oxygen species of compounds, and basic sites adsorb the H1-hydroxyl group of furfuryl alcohol. With the synergistic effect of Brønsted acid, the C2–O2 bonds of the furan ring are selectively polarized to enhance the selectivity toward 1,5-pentanediol. Additionally, dynamical reactions using furfural and furfuryl alcohol independently as feedstocks were conducted to investigate the reaction mechanism. The catalyst maintained stable performance over five runs with minimal deactivation. This work provides a method for improving the yield of 1,5-pentanediol from furfural over multiple nonprecious metal catalysts by enriching oxygen vacancies and combining suitable acid–base properties.

Ammonia (NH 3 ) is one of the important chemicals in human society. Conversion of air and water to NH 3 by plasma treatment and electrocatalytic reduction is a prospective approach. Herein, a self-supported CuCo/Cu nanowires (NWs) catalyst is prepared through simple electrochemical methods, achieving exceptional eNO x - RR performance: 99.8% Faradaic efficiency and 230.3 mg h -1 cm -2 NH 3 yield rate at -0.7 V vs. RHE in 1 M NaOH with 0.2 M NO x - . The 3D NWs architecture provides abundant exposed active sites, significantly improving the catalyst's NO x - reduction activity. Besides, the introduction of Co modulates the electronic structure of Cu while serving as a complementary site for active hydrogen (*H) supply, thereby synergistically promoting the eNO x - RR process. Finally, CuCo/Cu NWs serve as a bifunctional catalyst coupled with the anodic hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) instead of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), effectively reducing the energy consumption of the eNO x - RR system and achieving a greener and energy conservation route for the synthesis of NH 3 .

This study reports a sensitive and rapid dual-mode (colorimetric/fluorescent) sensing platform for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA), which is based on bimetallic copper-cobalt-doped carbon dot nanozymes (CuCo-CQDs, Cu:Co molar ratio = 1:2). The material exhibits strong peroxidase-like catalytic activity and inherent fluorescence, attributed to synergistic effects between copper and cobalt, as well as the presence of catalytically active Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox pairs and Co-N coordination sites. Utilizing the peroxidase-mimetic property, CuCo-CQDs catalyze the oxidation of colorless 3,3′,5,5′tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB) in the presence of H2O2. Concurrently, the fluorescence of the nanozymes is quenched via the inner filter effect (IFE) induced by oxTMB. Upon addition of AA, oxTMB is reduced to TMB, resulting in fluorescence recovery. The colorimetric mode shows a linear detection range of 0.1-30 μmol/L with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.039 μmol/L, while the fluorescence mode provides a linear range of 2-40 μmol/L with an LOD of 1.59 μmol/L. The platform was successfully applied to determine AA in human serum, demonstrating satisfactory analytical performance.

The Haber-Bosch process for ammonia synthesis is energy-intensive and environmentally damaging, while nitrate wastewater poses risks to both the environment and human health. Utilizing electrochemical method could remove nitrate in the sewage and a part of nitrate would been reduced to ammonia provided a highly efficient approach for nitrate removal and ammonia synthesis. In this study, incorporated Cu and Co on boron-nitrogen-doped graphite (BCN) substrate with eminent conductivity synthesized BCN-CuCo catalyst. On the catalyst, Cu and Co gave rise to synergistic effect which aroused charge redistribution between Cu and Co, which facilitated the nitrate adsorption, accelerated catalytic kinetics for nitrate reduction. BCN-CuCo catalyst demonstrated eminent performance for nitrate reduction, achieving a high Faradic efficiency of 95.8 % at −0.46 V vs RHE and an impressive ammonia yield rate of 12321.6 μg h −1 mg cat -1 at −0.86 V vs RHE in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 with 0.1 M KNO 3 . It also showed excellent performance in HNO 3 and neutral media, expanding its application scope. Ultimately, the BCN-CuCo facilitated the production of 320 mg of ammonium diuranate in a neutral medium, supporting sustainable resource utilization. This research provides an efficient strategy for ammonia synthesis and introduces a method for recycling resources from uranium and nitrate-contaminated wastewater.

Multimetallic oxide configuration and hollow structure construction are effective strategies for the design of efficient electrocatalysts , which can regulate the intrinsic properties of the active sites, enlarge the specific surface areas and expose more active sites. In this work, hollow-structured CuCo-based ternary metal oxides supported nitrogen-carbon networks (HS-CuMCoO x , M = Fe/Zn/Ni) derived from ZIF-67 hollow spheres were fabricated through facile ion exchange and heat treatment. The prepared composites possess hollow configurations with homogeneously dispersed trimetallic active species on the shells. Among all the ternary metallic derivatives, hollow spheres supporting Cu, Fe, and Co oxides (HS-CuFeCoO x ) exhibited highest electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The improved OER performance ascribed to the inherent electrocatalytic properties of the ternary metal active species and microstructure by hollow structure design and heat treatment, which offered an effective synthetic strategy for the fabrication of trimetallic oxide composites for as OER electrocatalysts.

Severe infections and a complicated healing process caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria in skin wounds have urgently driven the development of novel antibacterial agents. In this study, bimetallic copper-cobalt nanoclusters (CuCo NCs) were successfully synthesized via a one-pot aqueous co-reduction method and evaluated as a potential antimicrobial platform for wound infection treatment. The peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity of CuCo NCs catalyzes H 2 O 2 to generate hydroxyl radicals (•OH), inducing membrane disruption of bacteria. Consequently, the CuCo NCs exhibited potent and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 45.0 μg/mL and 11.3 μg/mL, and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of 90.0 μg/mL and 22.5 μg/mL, respectively, along with favorable biocompatibility. In a mouse model of dorsal skin wound infection, treatment with the CuCo NCs-loaded wound dressing significantly accelerated wound closure and promoted tissue regeneration. This study offers valuable insights into the rational design of bimetallic CuCo nanoclusters, which may shed light on the development of effective strategies for combating wound-associated infections and advancing clinical wound management.

The design of cost-effective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) remains a challenge. Herein, a mesoporous silica (mSiO 2 ) assisted protection strategy is developed to synthesize highly dispersed CuCo nanoalloys embedded in nitrogen doped carbon Cu/Co-NC@mS catalyst using zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) as carbon and nitrogen sources. The results revealed that the mSiO 2 protection holds the potential to inhabit CuCo nanoalloys from aggregation and thus promotes the formation of highly dispersed small CuCo nanoparticles. The obtained catalyst with pyrolysis temperature (T) of 800 °C (Cu/Co-NC@mS-800) achieves the best ORR performance among Cu/Co-NC@mS-T catalysts, yielding a maximum power density of 1000 mW m −2 when employed as air cathode MFCs. The significantly enhanced ORR performance of Cu/Co-NC@mS-800 could be attributed to following aspects: a) highly dispersed small CuCo nanoalloy particles, improved mesoporous surface area and volume owing to mSiO 2 protection; (b) the formation of concave regular dodecahedron mesoporous structure with thin graphtic carbon layer as support; (c) the synergetic effect between CuCo nanoalloys. This work provides a facile strategy for the preparation of highly dispersed bimetal nanoalloys with enhanced electrocatalytic performance for energy-related applications.

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) have excellent electrochemical properties. However, they are commonly associated with short cycle lives, agglomeration, and lower electrical conductivity. To ameliorate these drawbacks, porous rod-shaped CuO@Co3O4 has been synthesized through calcination with optimized oxidation temperature by using CuCo-MOF-74 as a template. Due to the porous structure, the CuO@Co3O4 electrode significantly increases the contact area with the electrolyte and greatly improves the reaction kinetics. As a result, the CuO@Co3O4 electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of 545.5 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. The capacitance retention at 10 A g−1 was 88.7% after 10 000 cycles. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (SC) has been assembled with CuO@Co3O4 as the positive electrode and commercial reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as the negative electrode, and the device has exhibited an energy density of 38.2 W h kg−1 at a power density of 1268.3 W kg−1. Impressively, the capacitance retention remained 83.2% even after 10 000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A g−1. This performance has demonstrated the potential of CuO@Co3O4 as an anode material for SCs.
