Synthesis, microstructure and characterization of ultra-low permittivity CuO–ZnO–B2O3–Li2O glass/Al2O3 composites for ULTCC application

Juan Xi,Guohua Chen,Fei Liu,Fei Shang,Jiwen Xu,Changrong Zhou,Changlai Yuan

In view of lead-free low-softening CuO–ZnO–B 2 O 3 –Li 2 O glass, novel glass/Al 2 O 3 ceramic composites were prepared by solid-state reaction route for ultra-low temperature co-fired ceramic (ULTCC) applications. The phase evolution and compositions, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of the composites were studied by XRD , SEM and dielectric property measurement. Four phases including Cu 2 Al 6 B 4 O 17 , Li 2 CuB 4 O 8 , CuB 2 O 4 and Al 2 O 3 coexist in the glass/Al 2 O 3 ceramic composites sintered in the range of 640–660 °C. However, the contents and types of the phases depend on the composition of the composites and firing temperature. The optimum properties with a permittivity ε r  = 3.79, a quality factor Q ×  f  = 38557 GHz (at 16.64 GHz) and a temperature coefficient of resonance frequency τ f ≈0 ppm/ o C as well as a heat conductivity λ = 1.46W(mK) −1 can be achieved for the glass/ceramic composite containing 10 wt% Al 2 O 3 sintered at 640 °C. Moreover, the composite can be co-fired compatible with Ag and Al electrodes. The as-prepared glass/Al 2 O 3 ceramic composites are promising candidate for ULTCC application.

Short-term impacts of Cu, CuO, ZnO and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on anammox sludge: CuNPs make a difference

Zheng-Zhe Zhang,Jia-Jia Xu,Zhi-Jian Shi,Ya-Fei Cheng,Zheng-Quan Ji,Rui Deng,Ren-Cun Jin

The increasing application of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) has posed an emerging challenge to wastewater treatment processes. The short-term impacts of CuNPs, CuONPs, ZnONPs and AgNPs on anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process were investigated firstly in this study. CuONPs, ZnONPs and AgNPs up to 50   mg   g −1 suspended solid (SS) did not affect anammox activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production or cell membrane integrity. However, 1.25   mg   g −1   SS CuNPs significantly inhibited the anammox activity and the loads that caused 50% inhibition were 4.64   ±   1.24 and 3.27   ±   0.79   mg   g −1   SS for anammox granules and flocs, respectively. 5   mg   g −1   SS CuNPs caused serious accumulation of the toxic intermediate N 2 H 4 . Furthermore, CuNPs interacted with extracellular polymeric substances by specifically bonding to tyrosine or tryptophan-containing groups, C-O-C in polysaccharides and –OH in polymeric compounds. Therefore, this study calls for more attention to the risks of NPs to the anammox-based processes.

Structural relationships and the synergistic catalytic mechanism of CuO/ZnO/Ga2O3 ternary catalysts in low-temperature methanol steam reforming

Minghui Lian,Jinxiao Li,Lin Li,Shicheng Dong,Chao Zhang,Chunhua Yang,Jing Zhang,Hexiang Zhong,Wenyao Jin,Liwei Pan

In this study, the constitutive relationships of CuO/ZnO, CuO/Ga2O3, ZnO/Ga2O3 bimetallic catalysts and CuO/ZnO/Ga2O3 ternary catalysts were systematically investigated to reveal the mechanism of the metal–component interactions on the catalytic performance. In the bimetallic system, ZnO inhibits CuO sintering through a physical barrier effect, the CuO/Ga2O3 interface promotes the formation of adsorbed oxygen to enhance the resistance to carbon deposition, and the ZnO/Ga2O3 solid-solution structure significantly enhances the electron-transfer efficiency. In the ternary catalyst with an M2+ : M3+ ratio of 3 : 1, the high specific surface of the layered structure with abundant active sites enabled CuO/ZnO/Ga2O3-3 to exhibit optimal performance: the synergistic effect between the CuO and Zn9Ga2O12 crystalline surfaces enhanced electron transfer and metal–carrier interactions, and the ratio of adsorbed oxygen reached 78.42%, which effectively promoted CO oxidation and CO2 generation. When applied to methanol steam reforming (MSR), the catalyst achieved 99.89% methanol conversion, 55.30 mmol g−1 h−1 H2 production rate, and only 0.91% CO concentration, combining highly efficient catalytic activity and anti-sintering stability. The results provide a theoretical basis for the structural design and performance optimization of multi-component catalysts.

Efficient catalytic ozonation over CuO/ZnO for ofloxacin degradation: the synergistic effect between CuO and ZnO promotes the catalytic effect

Zicai Zhao,Yuanyuan Zhang,Shuangfei Wang,Hongxiang Zhu,Jianhua Xiong

ABSTRACT In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) supported copper oxide (CuO) catalyst was prepared and characterized. Ofloxacin (OFL) was selected as the target pollutant to study the catalytic activity of CuO/ ZnO. The characterizations of CuO/ZnO were studied using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy etc. The catalytic activity of CuO/ZnO on OFL degradation efficiency was systematically examined under different experimental conditions: including different catalyst doses, O 3 flow rates, initial pH values and OFL concentrations. The catalytic activity achieved maximal when Cu:Zn was 1:5. The results showed that the degradation of OFL increased with the increase of CuO/ZnO dosage, O 3 flow rate and pH value, but decreased with the increase of OFL initial concentration. Under selected initial conditions (80 mL/min ozone flow, 20 mg/L OFL solution, and 0.63 g/L catalyst dosage), the O 3 +CuO/ZnO process significantly improved OFL removal efficiency due to the production of hydroxyl radical ( • OH), which was approved by tert-butanol (TBA). It was confirmed that CuO and ZnO showed synergistic effect on the catalytic ozonation of OFL. The degradation efficiency of OFL was only slightly decreased after five repeated times, indicating that CuO/ZnO had well catalytic stability.

Insights into the influence of in situ generated H2 and H2O on the stability of highly dispersed CuO-ZnO/SiO2 Catalyst

Chengfei Zhang,Pengze Zhang,Mingyuan Zhu

CuO-ZnO is a key catalyst widely used in catalytic processes such as dehydrogenation and hydrogenation. Hence, revealing the impact of H2O and H2 on the stability of CuO-ZnO catalysts is of critical importance. In this work, a CuO-ZnO/SiO2 catalyst with highly dispersed CuO-ZnO interface active sites was synthesized, and the structure-activity relationship and deactivation mechanism were systematically investigated using a model reaction (the cyclodehydrogenation of 1-amino-2-propanol to 2,5-dimethylpyrazine) that simultaneously generates H2O and H2. Under optimized reaction conditions (250 °C, space velocity: 1.5 h-1, and N2 flow rate: 8 mL/min), a 2,5-dimethylpyrazine yield of 68.1% was achieved over the 20%CuO-ZnO/SiO2-3:2 catalyst. The investigation into the deactivation mechanism reveals that Cu species agglomeration and carbon deposition are the primary reasons for the decline in activity. The roles of H2 and H2O in catalyst stability were found to be different: H2 suppressed the aggregation of metallic Cu0, while H2O enhanced stability by suppressing the formation of carbon deposits. Based on the understanding of the deactivation mechanism, catalyst regeneration was performed through air calcination, recovering the 2,5-dimethylpyrazine yield to 88.1% of the initial value. Overall, this work reveals the deactivation pathways and stabilization mechanisms of CuO-ZnO/SiO2 catalysts under reactive atmospheres containing H2 and H2O, offering theoretical guidance for industrial application and design of a highly stable CuO-ZnO catalyst.

Sensitive photoelectrochemical detection of colitoxin DNA based on NCDs@CuO/ZnO heterostructured nanocomposites with efficient separation capacity of photo-induced carriers

Zheng Delun,Yang Jianying,Zheng Zengyao,Peng Mingxuan,Ng Kwan-Ming,Chen Yaowen,Huang Linjia,Gao Wenhua

A metal–organic framework (MOF) of Cu-TPA (terephthalic acid) microsphere was prepared, followed by calcinating the MOF precursor of Cu-TPA/ZIF-8 mixture to obtain the CuO/ZnO. N-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were employed to combine the CuO/ZnO composite to form a tripartite heterostructured architecture of NCDs@CuO/ZnO, which led to a fierce enlargement of the photocurrent response. This  was ascribed to the thinner-shell structure of the CuO microsphere and the fact that hollow ZnO particles could sharply promote the incidence intensity of visible light. The more porous defectiveness exposed on CuO/ZnO surface was in favor of rapidly infiltrating electrolyte ions. The p-n type CuO/ZnO composite with more contact interface could abridge the transfer distance of photo-induced electron (e −1 )/hole (h + ) pairs and repress their recombination availably. NCDs not only could boost electron transfer rate on the electrode interface but also successfully sensitized the CuO/ZnO composite, which resulted in high conversion efficiency of photon-to-electron. The probe DNA (S1) was firmly assembled on the modified ITO electrode surface (S1/NCDs@CuO/ZnO) through an amidation reaction. Under optimal conditions, the prepared DNA biosensor displayed a wide linear range of 1.0 × 10 −6  ~ 7.5 × 10 −1  nM and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.81 × 10 −7  nM for colitoxin DNA (S2) measure, which exhibited a better photoelectrochemistry (PEC) analysis performance than that obtained by differential pulse voltammetry techniques. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the sensing platform for target DNA detection of 5.0 × 10 −2  nM was 6.3%. This proposed DNA biosensor also showed good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility, demonstrating that the well-designed and synthesized photoactive materials of NCDs@CuO/ZnO are promising candidates for PEC analysis. Toxic effects of CuO, ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles in environmental concentration on the nitrogen removal, microbial activity and community of Anammox process

Xiaojing Zhang,Yue Zhou,Tengfei Xu,Kaiwei Zheng,Rongrong Zhang,Zhaoxue Peng,Hongzhong Zhang

In this study, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was operated as Anammox and used as parent reactor. Then three SBRs seeded from the parent reactor were adopted for investigating the effect of CuO, ZnO and TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) on nitrogen removal, microbial activity and microbial communities of Anammox. The bioactivities of anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AAOB) after different exposure period were detected by batch experiments. Results showed that NPs performed immediate and durable toxicity on Anammox. The nitrogen removal efficiency decreased to 2.3%, 2.9% and 14.0% from 71%, the Anammox rate decreased to 0.13, 0.16 and 0.75 from 2.76   mg   h −1   g −1   VSS, and the relative abundance of AAOB decreased to 2.57%, 2.78% and 2.61% from 7.99%, respectively. CuO and ZnO NPs performed similar effect, while CuO NPs led to the most severe toxicity and lowest accumulative effect. TiO 2 NPs showed the lowest toxicity but most durable suppression on Anammox process.

Joule heating of CuO-ZnO/Ni foam catalyst for high H2 production and energy-saving of methanol decomposition: From the performance to mechanism

Xuechen Zhou,Limo He,Chiyu Wang,Yufan Yang,Yanglin Chen,Song Hu,Sam Fong Yau Li,Yifei Sun,Sheng Su,Yi Wang,Jun Xiang

Methanol, as a H 2 storage carrier, is a good option to tackle with the challenges of H 2 storage and transportation. To improve hydrogen production and reduce energy consumption, a new approach of electrified methanol decomposition (MD) by Joule heating was investigated in this work. The conductive metal skeleton catalysts were prepared using nickel foam (NF) as a catalyst support and employing a hydrothermal-impregnation method to load the Cu/Zn active components. The catalyst heats up rapidly upon energizing, and the heating rates reaches over 10 °C/s. The Joule heating method significantly promotes the methanol conversions of CuO-ZnO/NF, CuO/NF, and ZnO/NF. Methanol conversion over CuO-ZnO/NF at 300 °C under Joule heating is over 80 % higher than that of conventional external heating, while its energy consumption is only 29 % of that under external heating. As a result, methanol conversion per unit power in Joule heating condition increases by 5.6 times compared with that in external heating. The in/ex-situ characterizations reveal that the Joule heating of metal skeleton catalyst promotes the lattice oxygen release of NF skeleton and redox of Cu/Zn species, which generates an extra electrochemical effect on the reaction. This study of Joule heating provides a new strategy of converting methanol to H 2 in a more efficient, energy-saving, and flexible way, and has important application potential in hydrogen energy and chemical energy storage (“Power-to-X”).

Durable CuO/ZnO/CeO 2 /ZrO 2 catalyst on SiC support for methanol steam reforming (MSR) was prepared by the combination of inverse microemulsion method and precipitation method which is termed as inverse microemulsion/precipitation method. The presence of Ce−O−Zr solid solution facilitated the production of oxygen vacancies and Ce 3+ species in the prepared CuO/ZnO/CeO 2 /ZrO 2 catalyst. Owing to the unique tiny reaction pool and the addition of precipitant for inverse microemulsion/precipitation method, the particle size of the prepared catalyst was principally between 2 and 6 nm, with an average size of 3.66 nm. Besides, the small particle size and the highly dispersed of Cu species boosted the reduction performance of the catalyst, enabling the reduction temperature to be only 201 °C. Effect of CuO/ZnO/FTO electrode properties on the performance of a photo-microbial fuel cell sensor for the detection of heavy metals

Yue Lu,Xingxin Hu,Lin Tang,Bo Peng,Jin Tang,Taotao Zeng,XunkuoZhang,Qian Liu

The development of sustainable, low-cost and responsive technology for heavy metals detection in wastewater is crucial. In this study, by combining CuO/ZnO photocathode with microbial anode, a novel photo-microbial fuel cell (PMFC) sensor was developed. The self-powered PMFC was performed under light and dark condition for heavy metals detection. Compared with MFC sensor, PMFC sensor showed a wider detection range (0.1–4 mg L −1 of Cd 2+ and 10–80 mg L −1 of Cu 2+ ). The improved performance in sensing limit and sensitivity was mainly attributed to the intimate P–N heterojunctions formed in CuO/ZnO, which accelerated the electron transport between the photocathode and the microbial anode. Besides, the toxicity of five heavy metals tested in PMFC was shown as Cd 2+ >Cr 6+ >Zn 2+ >Hg 2+ >Cu 2+ . This study has taken advantage of the characteristics of PMFC and facilitated its application in heavy metals detection, which provides a new approach for the development of biosensors .

CuO–ZnO heterojunction derived from Cu2+-doped ZIF-8: A new photoelectric material for ultrasensitive PEC immunoassay of CA125 with near-zero background noise

Kang Zou,Yamin Fu,Ruiying Yang,Xiaohua Zhang,Cuicui Du,Jinhua Chen

By direct calcination of Cu 2+ -doped ZIF-8 in oxygen atmosphere, a new photoelectric material, CuO–ZnO heterojunction , was prepared. The morphology and structure were investigated in detail by several methods, such as scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , nitrogen adsorption-desorption method and X-ray diffraction. Under visible light irradiation , CuO–ZnO heterojunction exhibits excellent PEC behavior in aqueous media with the presence of ascorbic acid (AA) and dissolved oxygen at −0.3 V. Taking the CA125-antibody functionalized CuO–ZnO heterojunction (CuO–ZnO-Ab 2 ) as a signal source, a novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensing platform was developed for ultrasensitive assay of CA125. Because of the target-induced introduction of photoelectric material to the sensing platform, the proposed PEC immunosensor has excellent performance for CA125 assay: near-zero background noise, wide linear response range (1 × 10 −5 U/mL to 100 U/mL) and low detection limit (3.16 × 10 −6 U/mL). The developed CuO–ZnO heterojunction and the related PEC sensing platform may have promising applications in ultrasensitive and highly accurate monitoring of various proteins in bioanalysis and disease diagnosis.

Construction of Ti3C2Tx MXene enhanced three dimensionally macropore CuO/ZnO heterojunction composite catalytic material: Boosting the efficient thermal decomposition and combustion process of the new energetic materials TKX-50

Dongqi Liu,Yanchen Wang,Weihao Lu,Lei Xiao,Jun Di,Fengqi Zhao,Xiaojun Feng,Kun Zhang,Wei Jiang,Gazi Hao

Multifunctional composite catalysts show significant potential for enhancing the thermal decomposition and combustion of energetic materials. However, their synergistic mechanisms remain unclear. In this work, we prepared a 3D macroporous (3DM) CuO/ZnO catalyst via PMMA template calcination and combined it with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene through electrostatic assembly, to form a 3DM CuO/ZnO-Ti 3 C 2 T x heterogeneous catalyst with uniform morphology and high conductivity. Results show that 3DM CuO/ZnO-Ti 3 C 2 T x has a good catalytic effect on TKX-50, which can advance the decomposition peak from 246 to 208 ℃, increase the heat release from 730 to 1106 J/g and boost combustion time from 560 to 790 ms, improve the flame temperature from 773 to 1109 ℃. By combining LAMMPS, materials studio software and TG-MS-IR analysis, the catalytic mechanism of 3DM material on the thermal decomposition of TKX-50 was deeply explored. 3DM materials can adsorb hydroxylamine molecule, accelerate the H + transfer process, achieve rapid exchange of H and OH, and realize the rapid and concentrated release of gas, thereby promoting the decomposition process of TKX-50. Consequently, the construction of composite catalysts with synergy can start from the perspective of forming more heterostructures, which provides better theoretical support for future research on composite catalysts.
