Resveratrol/POSS-based polymethacrylates for DLP 3D printing and fluorescent anti-counterfeiting

Wenxiu Chen,Youzhi Zeng,Zaoxia Wen,Linxuan Fang,Lianbin Wu

A trifunctional methacrylate monomer (REM) was synthesized from biomass resveratrol to address the need for sustainable resins in digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. The polymer properties were optimized by incorporating methacryloxypropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MA-POSS) with different mass fractions. Light-curing biobased materials (REM/POSS) exhibited enhanced thermal stability and dielectric properties. The REM/POSS-30 % composite showed a low dielectric constant ( D k  = 2.90 at 14.2 GHz) and excellent thermal stability. Compared to commercial bisphenol A-based resins (MEP), REM/POSS-0 % demonstrated superior comprehensive performance. The stilbene structure of resveratrol in REM/POSS polymers provided strong blue fluorescence under UV light, suggesting potential for information storage and encryption. The successful fabrication of complex structures confirmed the compatibility of REM/POSS with DLP 3D printing, offering a promising alternative to petroleum-based materials in both 3D printing and anti-counterfeiting applications.

High tensile properties, wide temperature tolerance, and DLP-printable eutectogels for microarrays wearable strain sensors

Xiaomin Zhang,Youjie Rong,Huijie Li,Jianhua Fei,Xiaobo Huang,Qingbo Bao,Jian An

Due to good stretchability, conductive gels have significant advantages in the field of manufacturing wearable flexible electronic devices. However, hydrogel-based and ionogel-based conductive materials reported in previous studies are prone to solvent evaporation and leakage, which would seriously affect the gel electromechanical performance in extreme working environments. In addition, how to manufacture gel-based flexible devices with complex structures is also a significant challenge in this field. Based on this, a photocurable 3D-printed eutectogel system was designed in this work. The precursor solution was composed of N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide (NAM), hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and DES solvents. The prepared eutectogel had excellent comprehensive properties, such as good transparency (>80 % in the visible region), high tensile performance (up to 648 %), strong mechanical strength (breaking strength up to 938 kPa), electrical conductivity (up to 78 mS/m at 25 ℃), environmental tolerance (-80 ℃ − 60 ℃), and so on. In addition, flexible wearable devices with complex microstructures can be constructed efficiently by DLP printing technology. In the low-pressure detection range (0–––2.5 kPa), the sensitivity of the printed eutectogel-based microarray was 8.78 times higher than that of the block or sheet gel structure, and various weak deformation signals can be timely and accurately detected. Therefore, the combination of photo-cured 3D printing and eutectic gels will provide new possibilities for the development and promotion of intelligent, flexible wearable devices.

Highly printable and multifunctional cell-laden collagen-based bioinks for precise DLP bioprinting and rapid diabetic wound regeneration

Caihong Fu,Guangyu Liu,Yirui Fan,Lang Xiao,Wenhua Li,Xinyu Tian,Jianxi Xiao

Digital light processing (DLP) bioprinting has revolutionized tissue engineering by offering unprecedented speed and precision. However, its full biomedical potential is hindered by the scarcity of cell-laden bioinks that combine excellent printability with superior bioactivity. In this study, we introduce a novel cell-laden collagen-based bioink optimized for precise DLP bioprinting and diabetic wound regeneration. This bioink integrates methacrylated collagen (CMA) with dihydromyricetin (DHM) and selected additives, achieving a combination of low concentration, high printability, and superior cell bioactivity, along with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. By employing a multi-crosslinking strategy that integrates free radical polymerization, Michael addition, Schiff base formation, and hydrogen bonding, the bioink achieves an ultra-fast gelation speed (375 % increase), a 161 % increase in stiffness, a 231 % improvement in mechanical resilience, and a 208 % enhancement in anti-biodegradation. These properties allow for the fabrication of intricate, cell-laden constructs with micron-scale precision, high cell viability, minimal swelling, and enhanced structural stability. The CMA-DHM system synergistically enhances 3D cell proliferation, mitigates oxidative stress, and modulates macrophage polarization, significantly outperforming conventional CMA hydrogels. Leveraging these properties, we developed biomimetic skin substitutes encapsulating human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs), which effectively facilitate diabetic wound progression through critical healing phases. These skin substitutes provide potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, accelerate re-epithelialization and collagen deposition, and enhance angiogenesis, thereby preventing chronic wound formation and facilitating efficient tissue regeneration. This study establishes a versatile, scalable DLP bioprinting platform, offering a rapid and effective solution for chronic wound treatment, representing a significant advancement in regenerative medicine.

DLP 3D printing of electrically conductive hybrid hydrogels via polymerization-induced phase separation and subsequent in situ assembly of polypyrrole

Chuhan Song,Qian Zhao,Tao Xie,Jingjun Wu

Functional conductive hydrogels are widely used in various application scenarios, such as wearable sensors, tissue engineering scaffolds, and biosensing devices. Simultaneously achieving good conductivity and shaping versatility is still a great challenge. In this work, an inherently porous poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PolyNIPAm) hydrogel was constructed utilizing the principle of polymer-induced phase separation. The instantaneous heat release during the UV-initiated polymerization reaction increased the temperature of the system above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), triggering the phase transition of the PolyNIPAm chains. Subsequently, an interconnected polypyrrole (PPy) network within the hydrogel was obtained through in situ catalytic pyrrole polymerization. The resulting hybrid hydrogel demonstrates an exceptional electrical conductivity of 264 S m−1. Moreover, this method shows good compatibility with digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology, enabling the conductive hydrogel to acquire tailored complex features. The conductive hydrogel is 3D printed into a lattice-like structure and used as a piezoresistive sensor. Benefiting from its 3D structure, it can maintain high sensitivity over a wide range of detectable pressures. With this remarkable advantage, this fabrication strategy may provide new opportunities to broaden the applications of conductive hydrogels.

DLP-Printable Hydrogel with Integrated Tear Resistance and Low Hysteresis for Flexible Strain Sensing

Youjie Rong,Zhuang Zhao,Pengdi Cui,Huijie Wang,Guoqing Qin,Ruiqiang Hang,Xiangyu Zhang,Xiaobo Huang,Xiaohong Yao

Hydrogel has become an ideal material for flexible wearable devices due to its flexibility and ductility. Hydrogels, by modulating the polymer network, have demonstrated various properties essential for strain sensing, including low-temperature resistance, tear resistance, and high sensitivity. Despite these advances, breakthroughs in achieving both low hysteresis and high tear resistance simultaneously remain limited. This study introduces a novel hydrophobic associating hydrogel, synthesized via photoinitiated polymerization of acrylamide (AAM) and dodecyl methacrylate (LMA). The tear resistance provided by the poly-LMA micelles resulted in a gel elongation of 1500% under notched conditions. The hydration of CaCl2 altered the distribution of hydrogen bonds and chain segments in the polymer network, and the cyclic dissipation energy of the low hysteresis gel was only 15 kJ·m–3. Utilizing digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing, the hydrogel was rapidly fabricated into complex structures, demonstrating excellent performance in flexible strain sensing applications. This approach offers a streamlined solution for developing next-generation flexible strain sensing materials, combining advanced material design with innovative fabrication techniques.

Microtissue-Based Bioink as a Chondrocyte Microshelter for DLP Bioprinting

Xinfang Xie,Shuang Wu,Shan Mou,Nengqiang Guo,Zhenxing Wang,Jiaming Sun

Bioprinting specific tissues with robust viability is a great challenge, requiring a delicate balance between a densely cellular distribution and hydrogel network crosslinking density. Microtissues composed of tissue-specific mesenchymal stem cells and extra cellular matrix (ECM) particles provide an alternative scheme for realizing biomimetic cell density and microenvironment. Nevertheless, due to their instability during manufacturing, scarce efforts have been made to date to assemble them using rapid prototyping methods. Here, a novel microtissue bioink with good printability and cellular viability maintenance for digital light processing (DLP) bioprinting is introduced. Generally, the microtissue bioink is prepared by crosslinking acellular matrix microparticles and GelMA hydrogel with a specific proportion. The microtissue bioink exhibits the desired mechanical properties, swelling ratio, and has almost no influences on printability. For instance, a DLP bioprinted ear with a precise auricle structure using microtia chondrocytes microtissue boink is created. Additionally, the chondrocytes in the printed ears show obvious advantages in cell proliferation in vitro and auricular cartilage regeneration in vivo. The microtissue composite bioink for DLP printing not only enables accurate assembly of organ building blocks but also provides a 3D shelter to ensure printed cells' viability.

DLP 3D-printing of dual porous YSZ ceramics with high mechanical properties using PMMA microsphere as pore-forming agent

Yansong Liu,Yongsheng Liu,Yejie Cao,Xiang Zheng,Xiaokun Sun,Yang Xu

Dual porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics were fabricated via digital light processing (DLP) additive manufacturing using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres as pore-forming agent for the first time. The results showed that the introduction of PMMA microspheres effectively reduced the viscosity of the photosensitive YSZ ceramic slurry used in DLP printing, improved the cured depth of the slurry, and did not exert a strong influence on stability. After sintering at 1400°C, pores with dual scales were generated in the ceramics, while exhibiting the optimal physical and mechanical properties. With the increase of PMMA content from 0 to 40 vol%, the open porosity increased from 1.96% to 34.06% and the density decreased from 5.92 to 3.82 g/cm 3 , respectively. The compressive strength and thermal conductivity of porous ceramics decreased from 350.54 to 99.85 MPa and from 2.80 to 1.46 W/(m⋅K), respectively. This investigation opens up new prospects for the fabrication of porous YSZ ceramics with low thermal conductivity and high mechanical properties.

Ultra-Tough, High-Strength Ionogels Enabling DLP 3D Printing for Wearable Flexible Electronics

Wei Cao,Lifang Lin,Herfried Lammer,Haoran Zhai,Dhandapani Kuzhandaivel,Xianmei Huang,Xuan Zhou,Zixiang Weng,Lixin Wu

Traditional ionogels often suffer from poor mechanical strength and low toughness, which limit their practical use in flexible devices. Although strategies such as constructing double-network and topological structures have improved the toughness of ionogels, their mechanical performance remains insufficient for wearable sensing applications under large stress and strain. To address this challenge, we propose a microphase separation-induced strategy to facilitate the formation of high-density hydrogen bonds. A bicontinuous-phase ionogel was synthesized via a one-step copolymerization method by combining acrylic acid (forming a solvent-rich phase) and a zwitterionic monomer (SPP) (forming a polymer-rich phase), which exhibited differential compatibility with ionic liquids. By leveraging synergistic hydrogen bonding and microphase separation, the ionogel achieves exceptional mechanical performance, with a tensile strength of 7.77 MPa, toughness of 40.24 MJ/m3, and fracture energy of 37.27 kJ/m2, surpassing most reported ionogels while maintaining crack insensitivity. Unlike the conventional ionogels used in sensing, the ionogel developed in this study maintained stable electrical signals even under 1000% strain. Moreover, the strong hydrogen bonding between the polar groups of the SPP segments endows the material with notch insensitivity (the notched samples still sustain 529% strain) and excellent adhesiveness, enabling direct skin contact for tape-free flexible sensors. This study provides a valuable design strategy for advancing ionogels in the field of wearable sensing.

Effects of slurry mixing methods and solid loading on 3D printed silica glass parts based on DLP stereolithography

Peng Cai,Liang Guo,Hao Wang,Jiaming Li,Jintao Li,Yixin Qiu,Qingmao Zhang,Qitao Lue

In this work, digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology was used to prepare silica glass parts. The effects of slurry mixing methods and solid loading on the rheological properties of the silica slurry were investigated. The viscosity of the multi-step mixing method was less than the one-step mixing method at different solid loadings. When the solid loading of the slurry was 60 wt%, the viscosity by the multi-step mixing method and the one-step mixing method was 2059.7 mPa s and 5461.2 mPa s respectively at a shear rate of 0.1 sec −1 , with a difference of 3401.5 mPa s. The results of heat treatment experiments showed that transparent glass samples could be obtained when the solid loading was ≥40 wt%. The density of the sintered sample remained substantially constant as the solid loading increased, but the linear shrinkage gradually decreased. The heat treatment time could be reduced to less than 16 h by optimizing the debinding and sintering process using a simultaneous thermal analyzer. Glass samples with the relative density of more than 99% and a transmittance of more than 90% in the range of 300–1800 nm were acquired, and the microstructure and physical properties of the sintered glass were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and digital micro-Vickers hardness tester.

Microstructure refinement-homogenization and flexural strength improvement of Al2O3 ceramics fabricated by DLP-stereolithography integrated with chemical precipitation coating process

Nie Guanglin,Li Yehua,Sheng Pengfei,Zuo Fei,Wu Haolin,Liu Leiren,Deng Xin,Bao Yiwang,Wu Shanghua

In this study, the chemical precipitation coating (CP) process was creatively integrated with DLP-stereolithography based 3D printing for refining and homogenizing the microstructure of 3D printed Al 2 O 3 ceramic. Based on this novel approach, Al 2 O 3 powder was coated with a homogeneous layer of amorphous Y 2 O 3 , with the coated Al 2 O 3 powder found to make the microstructure of 3D printed Al 2 O 3 ceramic more uniform and refined, as compared with the conventional mechanical mixing (MM) of Al 2 O 3 and Y 2 O 3 powders. The grain size of Al 2 O 3 in Sample CP is 64.44% and 51.43% lower than those in the monolithic Al 2 O 3 ceramic and Sample MM, respectively. Sample CP has the highest flexural strength of 455.37±32.17 MPa, which is 14.85% and 25.45% higher than those of Samples MM and AL, respectively; also Sample CP has the highest Weibull modulus of 16.88 among the three kinds of samples. Moreover, the fine grained Sample CP has a close thermal conductivity to the coarse grained Sample MM because of the changes in morphology of Y 3 Al 5 O 12 phase from semi-connected (Sample MM) to isolated (Sample CP). Finally, specially designed fin-type Al 2 O 3 ceramic heat sinks were successfully fabricated via the novel integrated process, which has been proven to be an effective method for fabricating complex-shaped Al 2 O 3 ceramic components with enhanced flexural strength and reliability.

DLP printing of tough organogels for customized wearable sensors

Lisheng Zhu,Youjie Rong,Yueyue Wang,Qingbo Bao,Jian An,Di Huang,Xiaobo Huang

Conductive gels are highly desirable for wearable electronics and sensors. Photocurable 3D printing technology provides an efficient way for the preparation of gel-based microstructured electrodes. However, how to obtain gels with both high stretchability and 3D printability, is still one of the current challenges to customize wearable sensors through 3D printing. Herein, we constructed a photocurable composite mainly composed of N -methylol acrylamide (NAM) and ethylene glycol (EG) for the successful 3D printing of gel-based wearable sensing devices. After printing, abundant hydrogen bonds formed among the hydroxyl groups on the side chains works synergistically with the covalent bonds, enabling the gel to reach excellent mechanical properties and the elongation at break reach 730%. The as-printed gel incorporated with sodium chloride has excellent resistance signal detection ability, which can accurately and stably detect human motion. In addition, the EG endows the printed gels with excellent anti-freezing and anti-drying properties, enabling the wearable sensors to be used in harsh environments. In summary, this work introduced a facile strategy for the rapid preparation of gel-based flexible sensors with microstructure by photocurable 3D printing, which provides the possibilities for the manufacturing of artificial intelligence and smart electronics.

Fabrication of β-TCP/ Akermanite composite scaffold via DLP and in-situ modification of micro-nano surface morphology for bone repair

Xiang Li,Hanxu Zhang,Hang Zhang

Although β-TCP bioceramics possess favorable biocompatibility and bioactivity, their inherent brittleness restricts further applications. In this study, we aimed to enhance the mechanical performance and biocompatibility of β-TCP by incorporating 15% Akermanite (AK) into the structure. The fabrication process involved the use of digital light processing (DLP) technology to fabricate ceramic green bodies, followed by high-temperature debinding and sintering to obtain the ceramic scaffold. Subsequently, we employed an in-situ growth technique to create micro/nano surface topography on the scaffolds, facilitating synergistic regulation of cell behavior in conjunction with the controlled release of bioactive agents. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the addition of AK enlarged the grain size and reduced the number of micropores in the composite scaffold. Furthermore, after the in-situ growth treatment, a significant increase in micro/nano surface features was observed. Mechanical testing demonstrated that the incorporation of AK effectively improved the mechanical properties of the composite scaffold, resulting in an increase in strength of approximately 20%. Cell experiments indicated that AK supplementation further enhanced the material's cell compatibility, and the presence of micro/nano structures effectively promoted cell adhesion, proliferation, and expression of osteogenic genes. Consequently, we propose a strategy for fabricating porous bioceramics that stimulate bone growth, exhibit high strength, and ameliorate the degradation microenvironment. This approach opens up promising avenues for future applications in bone tissue engineering.
