Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) relies heavily on the presence of oxygen to induce cell death. Its effectiveness is thus diminished in the hypoxic regions of tumor tissue. To address this issue, the exploration of ultrasound-based synergistic treatment modalities has become a significant research focus. Here, we report an ultrasonic cavitation effect enhanced sonodynamic and 1208 nm photo-induced cancer treatment strategy based on thermoelectric/piezoelectric oxygen-defect bismuth oxychloride nanosheets (BNs) to realize the high-performance eradication of tumors. Upon ultrasonic irradiation, the local high temperature and high pressure generated by the ultrasonic cavitation effect combined with the thermoelectric and piezoelectric effects of BNs create a built-in electric field. This facilitates the separation of carriers, increasing their mobility and extending their lifetimes, thereby greatly improving the effectiveness of SDT and NIR-Ⅱ phototherapy on hypoxia. The Tween-20 modified BNs (TBNs) demonstrate ∼88.6 % elimination rate against deep-seated tumor cells under hypoxic conditions. In vivo experiments confirm the excellent antitumor efficacy of TBNs, achieving complete tumor elimination within 10 days with no recurrences. Furthermore, due to the high X-ray attenuation of Bi and excellent NIR-Ⅱ absorption, TBNs enable precise cancer diagnosis through photoacoustic (PA) imaging and computed tomography (CT).

Peritoneal metastasis (PM) is typically intractable by immunotherapy due to an immunosuppressive microenvironment and the peritoneal-plasma barrier. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) presents unique advantages of noninvasive in situ treatment and the potential for antitumor immune activation. Building upon SDT technology, the study reports on a novel biodegradable sonosensitizer, CaS 2 O 8 , characterized by a narrow bandgap, abundant oxygen vacancies and a rapid ultrasound (US) response for abdominal SDT. Such sonosensitizer only produces lethal reactive oxygen species (ROS) after US irradiation, which is nontoxic in a physiological environment. After US irradiation, CaS 2 O 8 yields a large amount of sulfate radical (•SO 4 - ), as well as sonodynamic related ROS (•OH, and 1 O 2 ), which exerts a synergistic effect with Ca 2+ overload to induce Z-conformation nucleic acid by augmenting oxidative damage. As a result, the PANoptosis is initiated through the ZBP1/RIPK3 pathway in tumor cells. This inflammatory cell death leads to a multi-faceted release of tumor cell contents which serve as an in situ tumor antigen to induce a robust antitumor immune response. Notably, the precision sono-immunotherapy enhances the infiltration of T cells into tumors by transforming an immunosuppressive phenotype into an immunostimulatory one. Therefore, targeting PANoptosis by CaS 2 O 8 -induced SDT can provide an alternative or additional clinical treatment and prolonged survival outcome for patients with PM.

Element doping is a viable strategy to regulate the metal–support interface for enhancing the catalytic performance of supported metal catalysts. Herein, Cu/ZnO:Cu-TH catalysts are prepared by immobilizing Cu nanoparticles (NPs) on ZnO nanorods featuring an adjustable oxygen vacancy, in which partial Cu atoms at the Cu–ZnO interface are incorporated into the ZnO lattice to form CuxZn1–xO species. Such Cu atom doping induces the creation of distinctive Cu–CuxZn1–xO interface sites and optimizes electron transfer from ZnO to Cu NPs, thereby achieving intermediate activation and ultimately endowing the catalyst with superior performance in reforming alkali-free formaldehyde (HCHO) into hydrogen at low temperatures. The Cu–CuxZn1–xO interface sites serve as pivotal centers for HCHO reforming, where the Cu sites and CuxZn1–xO sites selectively engage in the cleavage of C–H bonds in HCHO and O–H bonds in H2O, respectively. Meanwhile, the presence of oxygen vacancies bolsters the Cu–CuxZn1–xO sites in enhancing the adsorption of HCHO and H2O, further improving the activity. The Cu/ZnO:Cu-450H catalyst, distinguished by abundant Cu–CuxZn1–xO sites and a high concentration of oxygen vacancies, demonstrates optimal activity with TOF values of 16.9 and 72.4 h–1 under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, respectively, which are 8.9 and 29.0 times higher than those of the Cu/ZnO-450N catalyst, which lacks doped Cu atoms and oxygen vacancies.

Y 2 O 3 is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly wide-band gap photocatalyst with extensive application potential. However, its limited ability to be excited by visible light restricts its practical uses. In this study, we coupled the narrow bandgap semiconductor AgI with Y 2 O 3 to form a Z-scheme heterostructure , significantly promoting its photocatalytic degradation activity. Characterization and experimental results demonstrated the formation of Y-O-Ag bonds through coupling with AgI, leading to an increase in oxygen vacancies in Y 2 O 3 , which promotes the chemisorption of H 2 O and O 2 . The Y-O-Ag bond introduction promotes electron transfer , improves hole utilization, and boosts energy transfer efficiency, thus promoting the efficient generation of ·OH and 1 O 2 . The photocatalytic degradation rates of RhB and o-nitrophenol by 7.5% AgI/Y 2 O 3 were 26.5 and 4 times higher than those of pure Y 2 O 3 , respectively. This study provides theoretical support for the Z-scheme heterojunction to improve photocatalytic activity and offers efficient solutions and practical design ideas for sewage purification.

Herein, oxidized 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (oxTMB) nanobelts were developed to enhance the colorimetric and paper-based sensing of H 2 O 2 . It was found that the minor component of Fe 2+ in Na 2 SO 4 reagent could catalyze the oxidization of TMB by H 2 O 2 into positively charged oxTMB, which was further assembled into dark blue oxTMB nanobelts via electrostatic interaction with SO 4 2− . The extinction originating from the absorption and scattering of oxTMB nanobelts was utilized to quantitatively detect H 2 O 2 with a wide linear detection range (1.0–300 μM) and a low limit of detection (0.48 μM). In addition, no coffee-ring effect was observed in the test zone of the paper-based colorimetric array, which was beneficial to judge the color by naked eye. Finally, the colorimetric method was applied to detect H 2 O 2 in contact lens care solution. This work not only proposed a new colorimetric sensing platform for H 2 O 2 , but also highlighted the minor component in the reagent might influence the experimental result.

In this study, a highly efficient CuO/α-MnO 2 bimetallic catalyst was synthesized by hydrothermal and calcination methods and employed as a peroxydisulfate (PDS) activator for the degradation of thiocyanate (SCN − ) in aqueous phase. The effect of calcination temperature on the catalytic performance of CuO/α-MnO 2 and the mechanism of the CM350/PDS system were studied. Under optimal conditions, almost 100 % of SCN − (100 mg/L) was degraded within 90 min. XRD , XPS , Raman, and H 2 -TPR analyses revealed that the catalytic performance was enhanced in the CM350 catalyst due to the formation of M-O-Cu + -like structures (M = Mn 3+ , Mn 4+ , Cu 2+ ) through the combination of α-MnO 2 with CuO . The structures exhibit excellent redox ability and facilitate electron transfer between Cu and Mn elements, thereby improving the activation effect of PDS. Besides, the Cu 1.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 generated from the high calcination temperature was not conducive to the SCN − degradation reaction. Moreover, the mechanism study indicated that SO 4 ·- , ·OH, and the electron transfer pathway mainly accounted for the SCN − degradation. This study provides some guidance for the synthesis of PDS activation materials and the treatment of industrial wastewater by an advanced oxidation process .

The study investigated the inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa using a combined approach involving thermally activated peroxyacetic acid (Heat/PAA) and thermally activated persulfate (Heat/PDS). The Heat/PDS algal inactivation process conforms to first-order reaction kinetics. Both hydroxyl radical (•OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 - •) significantly impact the disruption of cell integrity, with SO 4 - • assuming a predominant role. PAA appears to activate organic radicals (RO•), hydroxyl (•OH), and a minimal amount of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). A thorough analysis underscores persulfate's superior ability to disrupt algal cell membranes. Additionally, SO 4 - • can convert small-molecule proteins into aromatic hydrocarbons, accelerating cell lysis. PAA can accelerate cell death by diffusing into the cell membrane and triggering advanced oxidative reactions within the cell. This study validates the effectiveness of the thermally activated persulfate process and the thermally activated peroxyacetic acid as strategies for algae inactivation.

Transition metal oxides have been recently investigated as excellent catalyst for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation, but suffers from slow redox cycle of metal species. In this work, a novel avenue for facilitating valence cycles of Cu 2+ /Cu + was proposed by overturned doping inert Ce into mesoporous CuO. Increased formation of active sites (Cu-Ce interface) and oxygen vacancy was achieved, resulting in accelerated interfacial electron transfer and facilitated valence cycles of Cu 2+ /Cu + . The Ce-doped mesoporous CuO (CeCuO x ) exhibited greatly enhanced activity toward PDS activation and efficient removal of different bisphenols in a wide pH working range. The degradation of bisphenols followed a nonradical oxidation pathway based on electron transfer process (ETP), and CeCuO x @PDS complex was proved to be the primary reactive species. The CeCuO x /PDS system exhibited good stability and superior catalytic performance in complicated water matrix, and would be a promising catalyst for wastewater purification. This work provides a new prospect for boosting the redox behavior of metal active sites for environmental remediation.

The presence and induced secondary reactions of natural organic matter (NOM) significantly affect the remediation efficacy of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) systems. However, it remains unclear how this process relates to organic radicals generated from reactions between the NOM and oxidants. The study, for the first time, reported the vital roles and transformation pathways of carbon-centered radicals (CCR•) derived from NOM in activated persulfate (PS) systems. Results showed that both typical terrestrial/aquatic NOM isolates and collected NOM samples produced CCR• by scavenging activated PS and greatly enhanced the dehalogenation performance under anoxic conditions. Under oxic conditions, newly formed CCR• could be oxidized by O2 and generate organic peroxide intermediates (ROO•) to catalytically yield additional •OH without the involvement of PS. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) results indicated that CCR• predominantly formed from carboxyl and aliphatic structures instead of aromatics within NOM through hydrogen abstraction and decarboxylation reactions by SO4•– or •OH. Specific anoxic reactions (i.e., dehalogenation and intramolecular cross-coupling reactions) further promoted the transformation of CCR• to more unsaturated and polymerized/condensed compounds. In contrast, oxic propagation of ROO• enhanced bond breakage/ring cleavage and degradation of CCR• due to the presence of additional •OH and self-decomposition. This study provides novel insights into the role of NOM and O2 in ISCO and the development of engineered strategies for creating organic radicals capable of enhancing the remediation of specific contaminants and recovering organic carbon.

This work comprehensively investigated how the characteristics of boron (B) precursors affect the catalytic activity of microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI) towards peracetic acid (PAA) activation for micropollutant degradation. Three boron precursors were introduced into mZVI by ball milling with their physical-chemical properties carefully characterized, and their ability to activate PAA comprehensively evaluated via sulfamethoxazole (SMX) oxidation efficiency. It’s found that B 2 O 3 -ZVI demonstrated the highest capability to activate PAA for SMX degradation, with k obs 2 ∼ 3 times higher than Na 2 B 4 O 7 -ZVI and H 3 BO 3 -ZVI. Specially, B precursors regulate the ability of mZVI to activate PAA via the following two aspects: (1) affecting the formation and content of FeB to accelerate Fe(II) regeneration; (2) increasing the hydrophilicity of the iron particles and the affinity of B-ZVI for binding PAA to different extent. This study highlights the important role of boron precursors in tuning engineered mZVI to initiate Fenton-like process for water purification.

The remediation of organic-contaminated water is a critical environmental challenge, and iron-based persulfate (PS) activation processes have emerged as a promising solution. However, the introduction of reductive sulfur species, while accelerating the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle, may also quench reactive species, potentially compromising the efficiency of Fenton-like systems. Here we systematically investigate the trade-off between accelerated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling and quenching effects in the zerovalent iron/PS (ZVI/PS) system using thiosulfate (TSF) as an activator. Our results show that low-level TSF (0.03–1.00 mmol/L) effectively facilitated the removal of naphthalene (Nap) and atrazine (ATZ), respectively. This enhancement is attributed to accelerated ZVI dissolution and FeS x formation, which promote the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, with Fe(IV) was identified as the primary active species. However, high-level TSF (>1.0 mmol/L) drastically reduced Nap removal due to PS consumption and active species elimination. The optimal TSF dosage of 0.20 mmol/L (TSF/PS molar ratio of 1:10) demonstrated robust organic pollutant degradation, achieving a 22-fold increase in the rate constant ( k obs ) for Nap removal and 0.47–7.5-fold increases for ATZ removal. These findings highlight the potential of the TSF-ZVI/PS system as a versatile and efficient solution for degrading a wide range of organic pollutants, including PAHs and herbicides, in water treatment applications.

The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with FeS is a promising wastewater treatment technology. The degradation mechanism of iopamidol (IPM) in the PMS/FeS system and the effect of Cl − were examined. The results indicated that the surface-bound radicals (SO 4 •− ads and HO • ads ) generated on the FeS surface were identified as the primary reactive species contributing to IPM degradation. The surface and dissolved Fe(II), together with the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling facilitated by the surface sulfur on FeS, were all conducive to the activation PMS. When Cl − were in the range of 1 ∼ 5 mmol/L, the IPM degradation rate remained at almost 80 %. The generation of chlorinated products reduces ecotoxicity. The presence of Cl − mitigated the formation of iodoform, notwithstanding the impact on TOC removal. This study can provide a certain basis for the mechanism of FeS/PMS in degrading contaminants and its application for contaminant removal from chlorinated waters.
