New Approaches in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR): A Beneficial Research of Hyperbranched Nanowire-Prepared Weak Gels for Profile Control in High-Temperature and High-Salinity Environments

Qingjie Ma,Jun Li,Yajun Wu,Beibei Wu,Xueyuan Qin,Rui Gou,Linghui Xi,Wanfen Pu,Rui Liu

This study investigates a novel weak gel system prepared from hyperbranched nanowires for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) applications. The gel was synthesized using an environmentally friendly slow-release crosslinker and evaluated for its gelation behavior, viscosity, and structural stability under simulated reservoir conditions. Characterization techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), were employed to analyze the chemical and physical properties of the gels. The results demonstrated that O-20@PAM@CNTs gels exhibited superior gelation rates, viscosity, and structural integrity compared to O-20@PAM gels, particularly under elevated temperatures. Core flooding experiments indicated that both gel systems effectively reduced permeability and improved oil recovery, with O-20@PAM@CNTs achieving a higher cumulative recovery rate of 89.9% compared to 79.2% for O-20@PAM. The findings highlight the potential of CNTs-enhanced gels in optimizing oil recovery and addressing reservoir heterogeneity. The findings of this research indicate the potential of O-20@PAM@CNTs to serve as promising candidates for profile control. The introduction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the polymer matrix not only accelerated the gelation process but also significantly improved the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the gels. Core plugging and flooding tests revealed that O-20@PAM@CNTs gels provided superior performance in reducing permeability and improving the cumulative recovery rate, demonstrating their capability to effectively block high-permeability channels and redirect flow towards oil-rich areas. The degradation behavior of the gels also indicated their suitability for reservoir cleaning post-operation. Overall, this study underscores the potential of utilizing advanced polymer-based gels for efficient EOR, offering valuable insights for future applications in the field of petroleum engineering.

Behavior of CO2 stimulus-responsive amidine naphthenate surfactant: A novel concept for the emulsification

Qi Wu,Yan Xu

Stimulus-responsive surfactant is becoming a hot research topic with high controllability and excellent emulsifying properties. In this work, an amidine naphthenate surfactant was synthesized for the first time by the reaction between alkyl amidine and naphthenic acid. Surface activity and emulsion performance of this novel surfactant in oil/water emulsion were investigated. Compared with the previously synthesized amidine bicarbonate surfactants, amidine naphthenate surfactants exhibited a superior emulsification performance above 60 °C due to their lower critical micelle concentration (CMC) and interfacial tension (IFT). The presence of two long alkyl groups is recognized as the main reason for its superior properties than amidine bicarbonate having only one long alkyl group. Increased hydrophobic interactions between the long alkyl chains and electrostatic interactions between the ionic head groups lead to the easier formation of micelles. Notably, the amidine naphthenate has a characteristic of CO 2 -responsive property. The amidine naphthenate emulsion can be demulsified by CO 2 bubbling which destroys the chemical structure of amidine naphthenate, accompanied by the formation of amidine cations and naphthenic acids. Then, the emulsion was completely demulsified due to the demulsification effect of naphthenic acid. Therefore, the synthesized amidine naphthenate surfactant possesses not only high interface activity but also CO 2 responsive property, which endows it an extensive application prospect for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations in the oil industry.

Insights into the Effects of Salinity on the Transport Behavior of Polymer-Enhanced Branched-Preformed Particle Gel Suspension in Porous Media

Zongyang Li,Yefei Wang,Hong He,Fuqing Yuan,Haocheng Liu,Yuqiu Chen

The branched-preformed particle gel (B-PPG) is a novel viscoelastic particle gel used for improving sweep efficiency and enhancing oil recovery in a heterogeneous mature reservoir. To improve the performance of B-PPG, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) is used to increase the viscosity and to prepare a homogeneous B-PPG suspension. Although some encouraging progress has been made in the application of polymer-enhanced B-PPG suspension, its transport behavior in porous media is still unclear, which is crucial for its application in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in a heterogeneous reservoir. Due to the complex reservoir condition of different brine salinities, the physiochemical property of polymer-enhanced B-PPG suspension as well as its transport behavior in porous media can be affected, which may lead to unsatisfactory results. Understanding the effects of salinity on the transport behavior of polymer-enhanced B-PPG suspension in porous media is of vital importance in figuring out the flow behavior and improving the sweep efficiency in the mature reservoir. In this study, the effects of salinity on the swelling ratio, particle size, viscosity property, and suspension stability of B-PPG and polymer-enhanced B-PPG suspension were studied. Meanwhile, sand pack flow experiments were conducted to study the transport behavior of polymer-enhanced B-PPG suspension in porous media. The results show that when the brine salinity increases, the swelling ratio and particle size of B-PPG, as well as the viscosity and the suspension stability of polymer-enhanced B-PPG suspension all demonstrate a decreasing trend. In the range of 3550–10 651 mg·L–1, as the brine salinity increases, the resistance factor decreases and the transportation of polymer-enhanced B-PPG suspension in porous media becomes easier. In this case, the ratio of swollen B-PPG particle diameter to the pore throat diameter turns out to be the determining factor that governs the transport behavior. However, when the brine salinity is higher than 10 651 mg·L–1, with the increase of brine salinity, the resistance factor increases. As a result, the effects of viscosity and suspension stability of polymer-enhanced B-PPG suspension become more prominent.

Study on frequency optimization and mechanism of ultrasonic waves assisting water flooding in low-permeability reservoirs

Xu Li,Chunsheng Pu,Xin Chen,Feifei Huang,Heng Zheng

Water flooding is one of widely used technique to improve oil recovery from conventional reservoirs, but its performance in low-permeability reservoirs is barely satisfactory. Besides adding chemical agents, ultrasonic wave is an effective and environmental-friendly strategy to assist in water flooding for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in unconventional reservoirs. The acoustic frequency plays a dominating role in the EOR performance of ultrasonic wave and is usually optimized through a series of time-consuming laboratory experiments. Hence, this study proposes an unsupervised learning method to group low-permeability cores in terms of permeability, porosity and wettability. This grouping algorithm succeeds to classify the 100 natural cores adopted in this study into five categories and the water flooding experiment certificates the accuracy and reliability of the clustering results. It is proved that ultrasonic waves can further improve the oil recovery yielded by water-flooding, especially in the oil-wet and weakly water-wet low-permeability cores. Furthermore, we investigated the EOR mechanism of ultrasonic waves in the low-permeability reservoir via scanning electron microscope observation, infrared characterization, interfacial tension and oil viscosity measurement. Although ultrasonic waves cannot ameliorate the components of light oil as dramatically as those of heavy oil, such compound changes still contribute to the oil viscosity and oil-water interfacial tension reductions. More importantly, ultrasonic waves may modify the micromorphology of low-permeability cores and improve the pore connectivity.

Carbon Layer-Enhanced Electronic Interaction of Pd-SnO2 Hybrid Catalyst with High Performance in DAFC

Ting Qu,Qiang Tan,Yingjie Chen,Liting Liu,Shengwu Guo,Yuanzhen Chen,Yan Liu,Sai Li,Yongning Liu

Direct alcohol fuel cell technology (DAFC) has gained significant interest recently as it is a green energy technology with a low/zero pollution emission. Nevertheless, the sluggish kinetics of the electrocatalysis process and the high cost of anode catalysts still impede the wide application of DAFC. Moreover, the limited understanding of the reaction mechanism restrains the development of anode catalysts. Here, we have prepared a Pd-(SnO2@C)/C catalyst and highlighted a strategy to demonstrate the effects of active oxygen-contained species and electronic interaction, which are identified to have a synergistic effect. The as-prepared Pd-(SnO2@C)/C catalyst showed remarkable activity and stability for EOR and MOR in alkaline media. It also had an encouraging performance in a polymer fiber membrane-based alkaline DAFC, where a NiCo2O4 catalyst was used for the oxygen cathode. Combined with the theoretical analysis and the experimental research results, this study reveals that the electronic interaction is the dominant mechanism in the synergistic effect, which provides theoretical guidance and technical support for the preparation of the next generation of high catalytic activity and high stability anode catalysts of DAFC.

Advanced low-dimensional PdAg networked nanochains for the superior alcohol electrocatalysis

Nannan Zhang,Shudi Yu,Jie Li,Wanyu Liang,Yanghanqi Li,Zhengying Wu,Caiqin Wang,Yukou Du

Advanced 1D materials have become the focus due to the enhanced structure durability than 0D nanoparticles (NPs). Unfortunately, the unique electrocatalysts with 0D-1D composite structure are rarely reported. Herein, the low-dimensional PdAg networked nanochains (NNCs) with diverse element composition assembled from a sequence of NPs were designed as efficient 0D-1D electrocatalysts toward the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The low-dimensional PdAg NNCs not only possess stronger structure stability than 0D NPs, but also endow catalysts with more abundant active sites than traditional 1D nanochains. Attributed to the synergistic electronic effect, abundant active sites and surface defects, the composition-optimized PdAg-2 NNCs behaved the optimal electrocatalytic activities, greatly surpassing most of reported studies. Benefiting from 0D-1D composite structure and stable networked nanochain feature, the PdAg-2 NNCs still remained higher current density after the 3600 s chronoamperometry (CA) experiment and without obvious decline through three consecutive CA tests compared to commercial Pd/C, revealing the remarkable stability. Meanwhile, the PdAg-2 NNCs exhibited the prominent anti-CO poisoning ability and the lowest onset oxidation potential, manifesting the enhanced reaction kinetics. This work fabricated a novel electrocatalyst with low-dimension composite structure, producing new guidelines for the synthesis of high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

One-pot synthesis of 3D surface-wrinkled PdAu nanospheres for robust alcohols electrocatalysis

Nannan Zhang,Kewang Zhang,Jie Li,Changqing Ye,Yukou Du

Three dimensional (3D) noble-metal nanomaterials with special surface structures have been regarded as high-performance catalysts for alcohol oxidation on account of their superior thermal stability, electrical conductivity and large specific surface area. Although extensive efforts have been devoted to the preparation of 3D Pd-based catalysts with superior activity and stability, designing a simple, effective and eco-friendly method remains a challenge. Herein, we developed a facile one-step coreduction strategy to synthesize a series of 3D surface-wrinkled PdAu nanospheres (NSs) with tunable Pd/Au atomic ratios and found a universal method to prepare surface-wrinkled PdM (M = Au, Pt, Cu and Pb) NSs. Benefiting from the function of the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), the synthesized PdAu NSs with different composition possess abundant surface wrinkles, which is beneficial for exposing more electroactive centers. Attributed to the unique geometric morphology and optimized atomic ratio, the PdAu-2 NSs exhibited an optimal mass activity (MA) of 8103 mA mg −1 and 5113 mA mg −1 for the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), which was 6.1 and 4.1 times that of commercial Pd/C, respectively. Moreover, the PdAu-2 NSs exhibited superb stability after long-term current–time (i-t) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests of the EGOR and EOR. This work not only provides new avenues to engineer PdAu NSs with enhanced electrocatalytic performance but also offers guidance for extending to more 3D PdM (M = other metals) NSs with novel morphology applied to fuel cell fields.

Improved foam stability through the combination of silica nanoparticle and thixotropic polymer: An experimental study

Xu Li,Chunsheng Pu,Xin Chen

Foam flooding serves as one of widely-used enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques for developing oil and gas resources. However, the foam is a thermodynamically unstable system, limiting its EOR performance. Hence, this study aims to provide a novel strategy to stabilize foam through the combination of nanoparticle and thixotropic polymer and tries to reveal the foam-stabilizing mechanism. Firstly, a novel water-soluble thixotropic polymer (WTP) was developed, which is able to thicken solution under low shear rates and become thin under high shear rates. Such thixotropic behavior helps to stabilize foams and has little effects on the stir-foaming process. Then the hydrophobic nano-SiO 2 particles was modified by sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) with the assistance of ultrasonic treatment. Coupled modified nano-SiO 2 and WTP, this study develops a novel foam system with a high foaming volume and a long half-life time. This foam system is suitable for the high-temperature and high-salinity reservoir condition and can effectively enhance the oil recovery through foam flooding. The microscopic observations show that the foam system consists of fine, round and uniform bubbles, which may slow down the film drainage and restrain the gas diffusion. At the same time, the modified nano-SiO 2 particles generate a “solid shell” on the bubble surface and improve the elasticity of foam film; the WTP forms molecular spatial networks in solution and mitigates the nanoparticle agglomeration. As a result, the synergistic effects of nano-SiO 2 and WTP can improve the stability of foam significantly.

Potential application of novel amphiphilic Janus-SiO2 nanoparticles stabilized O/W/O emulsion for enhanced oil recovery

Han Jia,Jiajun Dai,Lingchun Miao,Xin Wei,Hongtao Tang,Pan Huang,Haidong Jia,Juan He,Kaihe Lv,Dexin Liu

The Janus nanoparticles stabilized Pickering emulsions showed great application potential in various fields, including enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In this study, the amphiphilic Janus-SiO 2 nanoparticles (Janus-C12) are successfully synthesized by the Pickering emulsion method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), ζ-potential and contact angle measurements. The phase inversion from oil-in-water (O/W), multiple oil-in-water-oil (O/W/O) emulsion, to water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions was observed with the delicate control for the modification degrees of Janus-C12. The possible emulsification mechanisms for various Janus-C12 stabilized emulsions were proposed. The multiple O/W/O emulsion stability in harsh conditions and the influence factors (nanoparticles concentration, water/oil volume ratio and NaCl concentration) were studied systematically. Moreover, the Janus-C12–79% stabilized multiple O/W/O Pickering emulsions exhibited excellent EOR performance (additional oil recovery of 27.2%) in core flooding tests, and the possible EOR mechanism was explored via microscopic visualization experiments.

One-pot synthesis of ultrafine trimetallic PtPdCu alloy nanoparticles decorated on carbon nanotubes for bifunctional catalysis of ethanol oxidation and oxygen reduction

Mingxing Nie,Zhengyu Xu,Lei Luo,Yu Wang,Wei Gan,Qunhui Yuan

Bifunctional catalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with high noble-metal utilization are highly beneficial to direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). This study developed a ternary bifunctional catalyst composed of ultrafine PtPdCu alloy nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) support through a facile surfactant-free solvothermal route. The carboxyl terminal groups on CNTs ensure the confined growth of PtPdCu alloys (∼5 nm) and suppress Ostwald ripening of metallic active sites during electrochemical cycling. Consequently, PtPdCu/CNTs exhibits high mass activity (1.95 A mg −1 ) and specific activity (4.08 mA cm −2 ) toward EOR, which are 7.8 and 8.9 times higher, respectively, than those of commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, PtPdCu/CNTs displays superior stability toward EOR compared with its bimetallic counterparts (PtPd/CNTs and PtCu/CNTs). In addition, PtPdCu/CNTs exhibits the highest half-wave potential of 0.888 V among all electrocatalysts, indicating high ORR activity. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Pd and Cu mediate the electronic structure of Pt, leading to enhanced catalytic activity of PtPdCu/CNTs. The excellent catalytic property of PtPdCu/CNTs can also be attributed to the bifunctional effects of Pd/Cu and the interaction between metal and the carbon support. The proposed material is a contribution to the family of efficient ternary-alloy electrocatalysts for fuel cells.
