Influence of polar-modified ESBO on the thermal and mechanical properties of FKM/EPDM rubber blends

Faxin Du,Gen Liu,Zhangjun Yao,Shengrong Zhou,Qiuhong Wang,Chengqiang Yang,Qian Lu,Pan He,Jiaxuan Cao,Honglin Chen,Yujun Wei,Rui Han,Shuai Zhang,Guang-Zhao Li

Renowned for its oil, heat, and chemical resistance, fluoroelastomer rubber (FKM) also presents notable drawbacks, such as inferior low-temperature performance. In this study, 2,2-trifluoroethylamine (TF) and 2,4-difluorobenzylamine (DF) were grafted onto epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) to generate two innovative plasticizers: ESBO-TF and ESBO-DF that they were specifically designed to augment the low-temperature performance of FKM. A thorough investigation into the effects of ESBO-TF/DF on FKM/EPDM blends' properties was conducted. The study demonstrated that the integration of ESBO-TF and ESBO-DF enhanced the vital properties of the FKM/EPDM blends, including elongation at break, tear strength, and, significantly, low-temperature performance. There was a noticeable decrease in the glass transition temperature ( T g ), dropping by 3.54 and 2.95°C with the incorporation of 10 phr ESBO-TF and ESBO-DF, respectively. These respective plasticizers showed positive effects on the plasticization and compatibilization of the FKM/EPDM blends, thus proposing a novel methodology for developing new plasticizers for FKM and related blends.

Effect of crosslinked structure on the chemical degradation of EPDM rubber in an acidic environment

Qingkun Liu,Jia Li,Yunchao Jiang,Chuanbo Cong,Lixin Xu,Ying Zhang,Xiaoyu Meng,Qiong Zhou

The degradation of peroxide-cured EPDM and sulfur-cured EPDM in an acid solution (12.5 ppm H 2 SO 4 +1.8 ppm HF) was investigated, and it was found that the degradation of the two in an acid solution was different. The degradation degree of the sulfur curing system is lower than that of the peroxide curing system. During the aging process, the molecular main chain of the peroxide-cured EPDM was broken, resulting in a double bond and C=O structure. When there is a coagent TAIC in the peroxide curing system, the presence of TAIC delays the degradation time of the EPDM molecular backbone, and the hydrolysis reaction of the TAIC crosslinking point occurs preferentially, which makes the stability of EPDM improved. In addition, regardless of the presence or absence of TAIC, the peroxide-cured EPDM undergoes a crosslinking reaction in the later stage of aging, resulting in an ether-crosslinked structure, thereby improving the damaged crosslinking network. Unlike the degradation of the peroxide curing system, the breakage of the molecular backbone does not occur in the sulfur-cured EPDM, but only an internal crosslinking reaction of the curing precursor occurs, resulting in a crosslinked network dominated by polysulfide bonds, thereby increasing the crosslinking density of the EPDM during the aging process.

High mechanical interlocking and hydrogen bonding based carboxymethyl cellulose/SiO2 composite structures for interfacial bonding of reinforced polyimide fiber/EPDM composites

Youquan Ling,Junjie Liu,Bolin Xiao,Hui Jin,Luxiang Zhao,Yanjiang Bai,Xi Zhang,Mei Liang,Yang Chen,Huawei Zou

In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), a polymer abundant in hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, was employed as an interfacial layer between polyimide fibers and EPDM rubber. The formation of hydrogen bonds between CMC and the polyimide fibers facilitated a robust encapsulation of CMC on the fiber surface. Additionally, a greater number of SiO 2 nanoparticles were adsorbed onto the CMC surface through hydrogen bonding and condensation reactions, significantly enhancing the fiber's surface roughness and the matrix's wettability. This strong mechanical interlocking structure markedly improved the interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of the composites. Specifically, the H pull-out force, tensile strength, and elongation at break increased by 84.8 %, 89 %, and 45 %, respectively, compared to the control samples. In-situ electron microscopy further confirmed that the reinforced interface effectively inhibited crack propagation along the interface. Low-field NMR analysis revealed that the enhanced interfacial bonding restricted the mobility of rubber molecules, contributing to higher strains and stresses during the orientation hardening phase under tension. Moreover, the improved interfacial adhesion and the incorporation of SiO 2 within the interfacial layer also enhanced the ablative resistance and thermal insulation properties. These findings demonstrate that the CMC/SiO 2 encapsulation strategy represents an environmentally friendly, rapid, and efficient interfacial modification method for polyimide fiber-reinforced EPDM insulation materials.

Large-scale fabrication of flexible EPDM/MXene/PW phase change composites with excellent light-to-thermal conversion efficiency via water-assisted melt blending

Hao Wu,Xinpeng Hu,Xiaolong Li,Mengjie Sheng,Xinxin Sheng,Xiang Lu,Jinping Qu

Thermal therapy based on phase change materials (PCMs) has broad application prospects in the field of personal thermal care. Herein, a serious of EPDM/MXene/PW (EMP) based shape-stable phase change composites (SSPCCs) with excellent flexibility was prepared in large scale via water-assisted melt blending. The MXene nanosheets were dispersed well in the EPDM matrix during the melt blending processes with the assistance of water. With the introduction of a small amount of MXene nanosheets (only 0.8 wt%), the light-to-thermal conversion efficiency of SSPCCs were improved obviously. The melting phase change enthalpy and freezing phase change enthalpy of EMP-0.8 are about 120 J/g and 115 J/g, respectively. And after 200 times thermal cycles and 25 times light-thermal cycles, the phase change enthalpy of obtained EMP-0.8 SSPCC hardly changes. All the results show that the obtained EMP based SSPCCs can be fully utilized in the field of personal thermal therapy.

Recyclable and Reprocessable Cross-Linked EPDM Rubber by Constructing Ionic Cross-Linked Networks via Bio-Based Zinc Phytate

Zhen Li,Anqi Li,Liang He,Jianbin Min,Shanshan Guan

Endowing rubber with recyclability represents a critical advance for energy conservation. Herein, we report a sustainable and commercially feasible strategy for developing recyclable ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber via exchangeable ionic cross-links. Maleic anhydride (MAH) was grafted onto EPDM to produce EPDM-g-MAH, introducing reactive carboxyl moieties; subsequently, bio-derived zinc phytate (ZnPA) was employed as a green cross-linker to form reversible ionic bonds. After the first recycling cycle, the EPDM-g-MAH@ZnPA rubber retained 96% of its tensile strength and more than 99% of its elongation at break. Even after three recycling cycles, the tensile strength remained at 82%. To balance mechanical performance and recyclability, zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA) was incorporated to construct a dual dynamic cross-linking network. The EPDM-g-MAH@ZnPA/ZDMA-50 composite achieved a tensile strength of 5.86 MPa and a tear strength of 34.2 N/mm. After recycling, it retained 96.8% of its tensile strength and 86% of its elongation at break, exhibiting excellent structural stability during repeated processing. This work presents a bio-inspired, sustainable strategy for designing high-performance recyclable rubber materials by integrating bio-based cross-linkers into dynamic network architectures.

The Sea-Island Structured EPDM/PP TPV With Shape Memory Performance In Situ Compatibilized by Magnesium Maleic and Maleic Anhydride

Mengmeng Xu,Chengzhong Zong

It is challengeable to obtain shape memory effect in the traditional thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) with sea-island microstructure. Herein, we successfully achieved shape memory behavior in the type of ethylene propylene diene monomer/polypropylene thermoplastic vulcanizate (EPDM/PP TPV) compatibilized by the graft products of magnesium maleic (MgMA) and maleic anhydride (MAH) on the interface of EPDM/PP. MgMA and MAH derived from the in situ neutralization reaction of maleic acid (MA) with magnesium oxide (MgO) and the dehydration reaction of MA respectively. In this paper, the mole ratio of MA and MgO on the performance of EPDM/PP TPV was studied. With the incorporation of MA and MgO, the mechanical property and shape memory performance were improved. The result of DMA, FTIR, and SEM verified the successful graft reaction of MgMA and MAH on the polymer chains. The compatibilized EPDM/PP TPV achieved the improved mechanical property of tensile strength (12.9 MPa) and elongation at break (583.5%), the increased R f of 96.2% and R r of 86.7% at the tailoring mole ratio of MA:MgO (1:1.5).

Preparation of the EPDM/PBMA organic dispersion based on in-situ polymerization: Application in the protection of flexible electronic devices

WenKai Cao,BinXiao Wei,YinChuan Pu,LiPeng Wang,SiQi Su,YongPing Bai

Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is difficult to demonstrate its excellent performance in the coatings due to its high entanglement between molecular chains. Inspired by the phase inversion of emulsions, the EPDM/PBMA organic dispersion was prepared through the penetration and in-situ polymerization of BMA . In this strategy, the increased solubility parameter of PBMA after polymerization led to the transition of EPDM from the continuous phase to the dispersed phase, and the disentangled chain of EPDM shrank back to the shape of rod or ball. The shape of the dispersed phase was related to the interfacial tension. Particularly, the main chains of PBMA were arranged at the interface rather than buried in EPDM to maintain the stability of the organic dispersion. The EPDM/PBMA organic dispersion had excellent elasticity, bending, dispersion stability, insulation, adhesion to the glass, and aging resistance. This study indicated that the EPDM/PBMA organic dispersion could be applied as the promising protective coating for flexible electronic devices.

A type of shape memory material based on ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM)/ polypropylene (PP) thermoplastic vulcanizates compatibilized by magnesium maleate

Mengmeng Xu,Yingxia Zong,Chengzhong Zong

The effects of magnesium maleate (MgMA) and maleic anhydride (MAH) on the interfacial interaction and the shape memory properties of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and polypropylene (PP) thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) with sea island structure prepared by dynamic vulcanization were investigated in this study. PP matrix could maintain the temporary shape of TPVs and the crosslinked EPDM phase supplied stress to drive the deformed shape recovery during the shape memory process. MgMA and MAH grafted on PP and EPDM chains verified by FTIR, DMA and SEM, which improved the interfacial compatibility of EPDM and PP and enhanced the efficiency of stress transfer in the shape memory process. The shape fixity ratio (R f ) and shape recovery ratio (R r ) of TPVs compatibilized by MgMA and MAH were almost above 80%. The shape memory property and the mechanical performance of TPVs were all improved compared to that of the sample without compatibilization .

Catalyst-Free and Green Crosslinking of Epoxy-Functionalized EPDM With Dicarboxylic Acids: Insights into Curing Mechanism, Recyclability and Thermal Stability

Chenru Tian,Ganggang Zhang,Jun Liu,Liqun Zhang

The conventional curing methods pose a significant environmental threat due to the use of toxic vulcanizing agents, the release of irritating volatile organic compounds, and the difficulties in recycling end-of-life rubber products. This work demonstrates a catalyst-free, facile, and eco-friendly crosslinking strategy based on the reaction between epoxy-functionalized ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EEPDM) and dicarboxylic acids. The EEPDM was synthesized via a reusable reaction-controlled phase-transfer catalyst. Then, EEPDM could be effectively crosslinked by dicarboxylic acids without additional additives. The increased acidity of dicarboxylic acids could be conducive to improving the crosslinking rate. Moreover, the curing mechanism and the nature of the crosslinks were investigated, which is crucial for the recyclability of rubbers. The dicarboxylic acid-cured EEPDM exhibited undesirable side reactions, the extent of which showed a positive correlation with the acidity of carboxylic groups. This phenomenon could be primarily attributed to acid-catalyzed self-polymerization via epoxide ring-opening mechanisms, which would be detrimental to the reprocessability. Due to the formation of thermally stable ether linkages, the crosslinked EEPDM exhibited enhanced thermal-oxidative aging behavior. Hence, we envision that this catalyst-free, high-efficiency crosslinking strategy may offer a promising bridge between sustainable modification and high-performance for epoxy-functionalized rubbers, holding potential application in eco-friendly, low-odor automotive sealing strips.

Regulation on dual-interface of core–shell dispersed phases and mechanical properties of PP blends by rotary evaporation-assisted melt grafted EPDM-g-MAH

Biwei Qiu,Pengfei Qi,Zhongjian Qian,Wenhang Fang,Hua Zou,Xiying Huang

In this study, a series of maleic anhydride-grafted ethylene–propylene–diene rubbers (EPDM-g-MAHs) with different grafting degrees were prepared via the rotary evaporation-assisted melt grafting, which could achieve higher grafting rate and smaller gel content than the traditional melt grafting under the same conditions. Morphological observation, thermal analysis, and rheological measurements confirmed that the interfacial compatibility of the core–shell dispersed phases was enhanced by increasing the composition ratio of EPDM-g-MAH/EPDM or the grafting degree of the prepared EPDM-g-MAHs in the polypropylene (PP) blends. A remarkable improvement in toughness and a little loss in strength and modulus were obtained in the PP blends by regulating the dual interfaces of the core–shell dispersed phases. A new insight into the toughening mechanism of core–shell particles was presented in this work. The balance between toughness and strength could be attributed to the strong dual interfacial interaction of the core–shell dispersed phases, thereby effectively transferring stress. In addition to the conventionally internal cavitation in the rubber phase and the shear yielding of the PP matrix triggered by stress-concentrated dispersed phases, expanded stress field, elongated core phases, and increased cavitation that occurred at dual interfaces by debonding were regarded to contribute to the toughening effect.

Improved body and interface properties of EPDM insulation for HVDC cable accessory by grafted voltage stabilizer

Chunyang Li,Yongxing Jin,Yuxuan Sun,Duo Ji,Xu Yang,Manzhi Shao,Hong Zhao

As a key component in HVDC cable accessory, EPDM insulation is prone to breakdown both in body and along interface. To improve the comprehensive electrical strength of EPDM, voltage stabilizer 2-propenyl-4,6-dibenzoylresorcinol (ADR) was simultaneously grafted onto macromolecules through free radical reaction on its vinyl during crosslinking of EPDM. After modification, the mechanical strength and thermal stability of EPDM are improved. In terms of body properties, the injection and rapid transfer of space charge under normal electric field are weakened, the volume conductivity is reduced, the breakdown strength is improved and the growth of electrical tree is suppressed. In terms of interface properties, the normal electric field at the EPDM/XLPE interface is weakened, hence reduced potential risk of deterioration initiated from interface. Moreover, the surface conductivity of EPDM is reduced, the charge accumulation and migration along the EPDM/XLPE interface are suppressed, and the interface breakdown strengths under different interface pressures are significantly increased under tangential electric field. Molecular simulations and UV absorption characteristics indicate that the grafted ADR molecules not only introduce charge traps into EPDM, but also absorb the high energy from trapped electrons and consume it through multiple excitations, thus preventing the electron avalanche and subsequent degradation of EPDM.

Interfacial Reinforcement of EPDM Composites via Electron-Beam Irradiation: Synergistic Improvement in Mechanical and Ablation Performance

Youquan Ling,Luxiang Zhao,Yanjiang Bai,Shuai Li,Junjie Liu,Bolin Xiao,Xi Zhang,Mei Liang,Yang Chen,Huawei Zou

In this study, high-energy electron beam irradiation was strategically employed to modify the interface of the aramid fibers. Systematic investigation revealed that controlled irradiation doses produced dual surface enhancements: simultaneous generation of reactive functional groups and nanoscale topological restructuring. These synergistic modifications effectively improved the interfacial adhesion with EPDM rubber matrices. The optimized coirradiation protocol with epichlorohydrin demonstrated superior performance, achieving remarkable enhancements of 154% in H-pullout force and 30% increase in tensile strength of EPDM composites. Advanced characterization through low-field NMR coupled with in situ electron microscopy analysis elucidated the dynamic interfacial bonding mechanism and its direct correlation with macroscopic mechanical properties. Furthermore, the strengthened interface was found to facilitate carbon layer evolution during ablation, enabling the formation of denser adiabatic carbon structures that reduced the mass ablation rate by 21%. This radiation-induced interfacial engineering approach presents a scalable pathway for manufacturing high-performance flexible composites, successfully addressing the long-standing challenge of balancing mechanical robustness with thermal protection requirements in aerospace applications.
