The dewaterability of waste-activated sludge (WAS) has been extensively examined using zero-valent iron (ZVI)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, the high dosage and low utilization efficiencies of ZVI cast doubt on the dependability and viability of ZVI-based AOPs. In this study, we successfully demonstrated pre-magnetization as an efficient, chemical-free, and ecological method for improving the efficiency of sludge dewatering by ZVI/persulfate (PS) process, in which the reduction ratios of capillary suction time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) increased by 8.67% and 11.06% under optimal conditions, respectively. The highly active Fe 2+ released during ZVI corrosion may be more essential than ZVI itself during PS activation, which could be strengthened by pre-magnetization. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous Fe 2+ could react with PS to produce aqueous hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ∙) as well as surface-bound ∙OH and SO 4 − ∙, further decomposing bound-extracellular polymeric substances fractions, broking hydrophilic functional groups and compounds, altering protein secondary structure to expose more hydrophobic sites, and releasing abundant EPS-bound water. Due to the protection of tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) and the competitive oxidation of organics released during the early disintegration stage, radical oxidation primarily occurs at extracellular levels, releasing a bit of intracellular water. Besides, polysaccharides in TB-EPS may function a more significant role in flocculation than proteins, and a porous structure favorable to drainage will be formed after the pre-magnetized ZVI/PS treatment. The cost-benefit analysis further reveals that the Pre-ZVI/PS process presents high reusability and utilization, making it potential for particle application in sludge dewatering.

In this study, the exopolysaccharide (EPS) fromLactiplantibacillus plantarum(HMX2) was isolated from Chinese Northeast Sauerkraut. Its effects on juvenile turbot were investigated by adding different concentrations of HMX2-EPS (C: 0 mg/kg, H1: 100 mg/kg, H2: 500 mg/kg) to the feed. Compared with the control group, HMX2-EPS significantly improved the growth performance of juvenile turbot. The activities of antioxidant enzymes, digestive enzymes, and immune-related enzymes were significantly increased. HMX2-EPS could also increase the secretion of inflammatory factors and enhance the immune response of turbot by regulating the IFN signal transduction pathway and exhibit stronger survival rates after theA. hydrophilachallenge. Moreover, HMX2-EPS could improve the diversity of intestinal microbiota in juvenile fish, increase the abundance of potential probiotics, and reduce the abundance of pathogenic bacteria. The function of gut microbes in metabolism and the immune system could also be improved. All results showed better effects with high concentrations of HMX2-EPS. These results indicated that HMX2-EPS supplementation in the diet could promote growth, improve antioxidant activity, digestive capacity, and immunity capacity, and actively regulate the intestinal microbiota of juvenile turbot. In conclusion, this study might provide basic technical and scientific support for the application ofL. plantarumin aquatic feed. Keywords:Lactiplantibacillus plantarum;exopolysaccharide (EPS);immunity;intestinal health;Scophthalmus maximus

Owing to their excellent fluorescence and other advantageous properties, quantum dots (QDs) are promising candidates for environmental monitoring. Although we synthesized previously CdS QDs using extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria ( Desulfovibrio desulfuricans subsp. desulfuricans ) as biological template, systematic optimization of the synthesis conditions and in-depth investigation of their fluorescence properties remain limited. In the present study, based on an EPS-templated strategy, key synthesis parameters (such as pH, EPS concentration, and precursor ratios) were systematically optimized, enabling the successful extracellular preparation of bright cyan-green fluorescent CdS QDs with an emission maximum at 520 nm and a quantum yield of 11%. Comprehensive characterization confirmed their size (∼4.8 nm), good crystallinity (lattice spacing of 0.209 nm for the (220) plane), and successful formation of Cd-S bonds. FT-IR spectroscopy further indicated that the surface of the QDs was rich in functional groups such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino, and thiol groups, which significantly enhanced the colloidal stability of the CdS QDs in solution. The probe exhibited a response time of 5 min, high sensitivity (detection limit of 48 nM), a wide linear range (0–60 μM, R 2 = 0.992), and excellent selectivity for Cu 2+ . Time-resolved fluorescence studies suggested a dynamic quenching mechanism. Satisfactory recovery rates (99.52-110.11%) in real water samples (river and tap water) validated its practical applicability. This work presents a novel EPS-templated biosynthesis route for CdS QDs and establishes an efficient sensing platform, offering a promising strategy for rapid, low-cost heavy metal detection in environmental waters.

Against the backdrop of the global surge in solid waste, severe electromagnetic pollution, growing demand for energy conservation, and the "dual carbon goals" (carbon peaking and carbon neutrality), fully exploring the functional utilization of construction and demolition waste (CDW) has become a current research focus. To this end, this study prepared recycled lightweight aggregate concrete using recycled concrete powder (RCP, replacing 20 % by weight of cement), three types of recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) particles with different sizes and dosages (diameters: 0.5–1 mm, 1–2 mm, and 2–4 mm; dosages: 15–45 vol%), and 9 % nano-ferric tetroxide (Nano-Fe₃O 4 ) as raw materials. With reference to relevant national standards, indicators including its dry bulk density, mechanical properties, electromagnetic wave absorption performance, and durability were tested, and the influence of EPS particles on the properties of concrete and its mechanism was explored. The results show that the addition of EPS particles reduces the water absorption rate, apparent porosity, and dry bulk density of concrete, while improving its electromagnetic wave absorption and thermal insulation performance. Although the drying shrinkage, mechanical properties, and frost resistance decrease, they still meet the strength requirements for components. Specifically, when the dosage of EPS particles with a diameter of 2–4 mm is 30 % by volume, the sample exhibits the optimal comprehensive performance: it possesses good mechanical properties (41.28 MPa), excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance (minimum reflection loss RL = −33.66 dB, effective bandwidth of 10.17 GHz), and superior thermal insulation performance (thermal conductivity of 0.1144 W/(m·K)). The recycled lightweight aggregate concrete prepared in this study features a high proportion of solid waste utilization, excellent electromagnetic wave absorption, and thermal insulation performance. It can provide a reference for the resource utilization and functional development of construction and demolition waste.

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) exuded by microbes are found in diverse habitats, including soil. The quantification and characterization of EPS are essential prerequisites for understanding the ecological functions of extracellular products in soil. However, few studies have conducted in-depth profiling of soil EPS extraction steps and chemical characteristics. Here we examine the C and N contents, biopolymer contents, and optical properties of EPS involving three soil pre-treatment methods (moist soil, moist soil pre-incubated, and air-dried soil pre-incubated) and simultaneously track the compositional changes during the two-step extraction process (extract with CaCl 2 in Step 1 and phosphate buffer solution (PBS) with cation exchange resin (CER) in Step 2). The optical properties of soil EPS are investigated using ultraviolet-visible adsorption (UV–Vis), excitation-emission-matrix fluorescence (EEM), and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy coupled with multivariate analytical methods such as parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), principal component analysis (PCA), and correlation analysis. Results show that Step 2 releases significantly more dissolved organic carbon and biopolymers (polysaccharides, proteins, and uronic acids) from soils. UV–Vis and EEM spectroscopy suggest that the fractions extracted in Step 2 exhibit higher mean aromaticity, molecular weight , and humification degree than those extracted in Step 1. When using the standard method to extract EPS from moist aggregates (Step 2), EPS has a distinct fluorescence profile, rich in tryptophan- and tyrosine-like signals. Reassuringly, the fluorescence-profiles found in pre-extracts (Step 1) are very different - except where i) aggregates have an experimental drying step added, and ii) pure water is used as a pre-extractant. Drying of aggregates is thus problematic, and the use of pure water as an alternative pre-extractant is not advisable. Soil treatments have significant effects on the qualities of the various extracts which are detected by both the FTIR-PCA and EEM-PCA analyses. EEM fluorescence profiles of EPS suggest that both tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like substances are key components of the EPS extracted from all soils regardless of pretreatment. Our findings indicate that chemical characterization of soil EPS combined with spectral-chemometric approaches can be applied to identify and characterise the extracellular responses of soil microbes and thus help reveal the ecological functions of extracellular products in soils.

5 V-class LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) cathode material is emerging as a promising cobalt-free alternative to meet the growing demand for affordable, high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, LNMO faces significant electrochemical challenges, particularly interfacial instability with commercial electrolytes due to its high operating potentials. This instability leads to the dissolution of transition metals and consequently electrode crosstalk, which severely deteriorates electrochemical performance. Surface coating is extensively investigated to reduce interfacial side reactions for enhanced cycling stability. Traditional methods typically require multiple steps, including dispersion, mixing, drying, and calcination, which can be time-consuming and complex. Additionally, the resulting ceramic coatings are often rigid and unevenly distributed due to lattice mismatches, potentially leading to poor interfacial contact and increased resistance. In this study, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) is proposed as a streamlined slurry additive to in situ form an ethoxy-functional polysiloxane (EPS) film on the surface of LNMO particles during electrode preparation. Post-mortem X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analyses reveal the crucial role of the EPS film in addressing interfacial instability issues. First, the EPS film serves as an artificial cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) with a robust Si–O–Si bonding network, which is less vulnerable under high potentials. Second, the remaining ethoxy-functional groups in EPS scavenge HF by forming stable Si–F bonds, thereby suppressing the detrimental transition metal dissolution and crosstalk. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) further confirm the stability of the EPS film and the enhanced structural stability of the modified LNMO. Galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results demonstrate that EPS reduces the overall impedance and improves ion diffusion kinetics by forming stable electrode-electrolyte interfaces. As a result, compared to the baseline, the optimized LNMO cathode exhibits significantly improved cycling stability in both half cells (84.6 % vs. 51.4 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles) and full cells when paired with commercial graphite anodes (83.3 % vs. 53.4 % retention after 500 cycles). This strategy, further validated under elevated temperatures of 50 °C and in pouch-type cells, is expected to pave the way for the development of next-generation high-performance LIBs.

SBC induces EPS restructuring via polysaccharide depletion and protein redistribution. • SBC-induced EPS restructuring accompanied a 9.33% decrease in non-freezable water. • DFT suggested water-associated stabilization at a simplified SBC-EPS interface. • Coupled EPS-hydration-electrochemical interactions enhance electro-dewatering efficiency. Interfacial water confined within extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) constitutes an important barrier to sludge dewatering, while EPS-associated water has generally been regarded as a retained phase rather than an active participant in interfacial restructuring. To address this gap, the potential state-dependent role of water at sludge-derived biochar (SBC)-EPS interfaces and the influence on electro-dewatering were investigated. The non-freezable water fraction derived by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) decreased from 36.80% to 27.47%, while the sludge surface free energy based on extended DLVO (XDLVO) theory declined from 39.44 to 25.58 mJ/m 2 , suggesting reduced water confinement and weakened interfacial thermodynamics. Concomitantly, EPS restructuring was induced by SBC conditioning, accompanied by altered protein content, rearranged protein secondary structures, and polysaccharide depletion. Additional stabilization of protein-like EPS adsorption on the prehydrated SBC surface was indicated by the composition-balanced density functional theory (DFT), with the adsorption energy decreasing from −0.994 to −1.349 eV (ΔΔ E water = −0.355 eV). Moreover, the current response increased by 116.50%, and sludge cake moisture decreased from 64.46% to 41.78%. These findings support a possible hydration-related interfacial contribution associated with SBC-induced EPS restructuring, together with complementary structural and conductive contributions to electro-dewatering. In this study, the antitoxicity performance of the traditional anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) and the newly constructed membraneless anaerobic baffled reactor coupled with microbial fuel cell (ABR-MFC) was compared for the treatment of simulated printing and dyeing wastewater under the same hydraulic residence time. The sludge performances of ABR-MFC and ABR were evaluated on the dye removal rate, extracellular polymer (EPS) content, sludge particle size, methane yield, and the surface morphology of granular sludge. It was found that the maximum power density of the ABR-MFC reactor reached 1226.43 mW/m3, indicating that the coupled system has a good power generation capacity. The concentration of the EPS in the ABR-MFC reactor was about 3 times that in the ABR, which could be the result of the larger average particle size of sludge in the ABR-MFC reactor than in the ABR. The dye removal rate of the ABR-MFC reactor (91.71%) was higher than that of the ABR (1.49%). The methane production and microbial species in the ABR-MFC system were higher than those in the ABR. Overall, the MFC embedded in the ABR can effectively increase the resistance of the reactor, promote the formation of granular sludge, and improve the performance of the reactor for wastewater treatment.

The direct equalizing ray method was employed to design three groups of mixtures of oxytetracycline(OTC) and norfloxacin(NOR) with varying proportions(Group R1 had a higher proportion of OTC, while R2 had similar concentrations of both antibiotics, and R3 had a higher proportion of NOR).The effects of these mixtures on the content and properties of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the biological denitrification process were investigated using an sequencing batch reactor activated sludge reactor (SBR). The results revealed that the removal rates of ammonia nitrogen(NH 3 -N) decreased in all three groups with the addition of antibiotics. As the antibiotic concentration increased, the EPS content decreased by 68.46%, 55.53%, and 65.03% in R1, R2, and R3, respectively. To understand the interaction mechanism of mixed antibiotics on EPS in activated sludge, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques were employed. The findings demonstrated significant effects of mixed antibiotics on functional groups such as C-O, C O, and C-O-C. Specifically, hydrogen bonding was found to be the primary influencing factor in the R1 ratio, while Π-Π conjugation played a major role in the R3 ratio.

Skin microbiota plays an important role in wound healing, but skin injuries are highly susceptible to wound infections, leading to disruption of the skin microbiota. However, conventional antibacterial hydrogels eliminate both probiotics and pathogenic bacteria, disrupting the balance of the skin microbiota. Therefore, it is important to develop a wound dressing that can fend off foreign pathogenic bacteria while preserving skin microbiota stability. Inspired by live bacteria therapy, we designed a probiotic hydrogel (HAEPS@ L.sei gel) with high viability for promoting wound healing. Lactobacillus paracasei TYM202 encapsulated in the hydrogel has the activity of promoting wound healing, and the hydrogel matrix EPS-M76 has the prebiotic activity that promotes the proliferation and metabolism of Lactobacillus paracasei TYM202 . During the wound healing process, HAEPS@ L.sei gel releases lactic acid and acetic acid to resist the growth of pathogenic bacteria while maintaining Firmicutes and Proteobacteria balance at the phylum level, thus preserving skin microbiota stability. Our results showed that live probiotic hydrogels reduce the incidence of inflammation during wound healing while promoting angiogenesis and increasing collagen deposition. This study provides new ideas for developing wound dressings predicated on live bacterial hydrogels.

Completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite (CANON) process was an innovative technology for nitrogen removal from wastewater. It is necessary to clear the impact of CuO nanoparticles (CuO NPs) on CANON process since the widespread utilize increased their opportunity for entering into wastewater. In this study, the short-term and long-term effects of CuO NPs on the ammonia removal and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion were analyzed in the presence of nitrite, with the CuO NPs of 0, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 mg L−1, respectively. Results suggested that low concentration of CuO NPs could enhance the ammonia removal. The inhibition threshold of CuO NPs on CANON sludge within short-term exposure was 20 mg L−1, while that of long-term exposure was 10 mg L−1. Both short-term and long-term exposure within CuO NPs significantly impacted the ammonia removal, and both the nitrite and CuO NPs influenced the EPS secretion.

In this paper, a variety of biological phosphorus-nitrogen synergistic flame retardants were synthesized from the perspective of molecular design. At the same time, tannic acid (TA) modified graphene (GE) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanomaterials were prepared by combining nanocomposite technology. Then, the flame retardant was applied to expandable polystyrene (EPS) through a coating process to prepare toughened composites. And the effect of the synthesized high-efficiency phosphorus-nitrogen flame retardant on the flame retardancy efficiency and brittleness of EPS was studied. The flame retardant (PAU) was synthesized by complexing phytic acid (PA) and urea (U) in an aqueous medium, and then using polydopamine (PDA) as an adhesive. Next, on the basis of PAU, using GE and MWCNTs as tougheners, EPS-PAUCG composites were prepared by coating method. Research has found that in the UL-94 test, the flame-retardant EPS-PAUCG composites could reach V-0 level. In the CCT experiment, compared to pure EPS, the PHRR, THR, PSPR, and TSP of EPS-PAUCG2 decreased by 88.4 %, 72.3%, 74.9 %, and 80.9 %, respectively. Through mechanism analysis, it has been proven that PAUCG undergoes thermal decomposition to form a dense expandable protective carbon layer, preventing further degradation of the matrix. In addition, compared to EPS, the compressive strength of the EPS-PAUCG2 composites have increased by 22.5%. This was because the composites contained GE and MWCNTs with high molecular chain structure rigidity and specific surface area, which had a toughening effect of ductile particles.
