Bicarbonate ions (HCO 3 − ), commonly present in natural water sources, exert complex influences on peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This study investigates the role of HCO 3 − in a novel electrochemical system using a stainless-steel scrubber cathode (SSSC) for PMS activation. The buffering effect of HCO 3 − shifts the dominant Fe(II) species from dissolved Fe 2+ ions to surface-bound Fe(II) (≡Fe(II)) within the HCO 3 − /PMS/SSSC system. Furthermore, HCO 3 − promotes ≡Fe(II)/≡Fe(III) redox cycling on the SSSC surface. These synergistic effects significantly enhance PMS activation, generating singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and Fe IV O as the primary oxidants responsible for BPA degradation. Identification of degradation intermediates elucidated two dominant pathways: hydroxylation and radical coupling. Toxicity assessment of these intermediates confirmed reduced environmental risks. The SSSC exhibited long-term stability and effective performance in real water matrices, demonstrating its practical applicability.

Background Nowadays, antibiotic pollution is increasingly serious and posing a huge threat to ecology and human health. Therefore, it is vital to find effective approaches to remove antibiotics. Methods In this study, boron (B) was adopted to accelerate the surface and solution Fe 2+ recycle in Fe 3 O 4 /peracetic acid (PAA) system, which showed excellent performance for antibiotics removal. Significant findings According the XPS analysis and experiments detection, both recycle of surface and solution Fe 2+ could be enhanced in the presence of boron in Fe 3 O 4 /PAA system. 74.0% sulfamethazine (SMT) could be removed within 60 min in Fe 3 O 4 /PAA system while 93.4% could be removed within only 20 min in B/Fe 3 O 4 /PAA system and the value of k in B/Fe 3 O 4 /PAA system (0.136 min −1 ) was also much higher than that in Fe 3 O 4 /PAA system (0.028 min −1 ). The effect of boron, Fe 3 O 4 , PAA dosage and initial pH on removing SMT in Fe 3 O 4 /PAA system were also conducted. Quenching experiments and EPR experiments demonstrated that · OH, organic radicals (R-O · ) and Fe(IV) exhibited 63.1%, 17.3%, and 16.2% role in removing SMT, respectively. Possible SMT degradation pathway and the toxicity of transformation products were analyzed. B/Fe 3 O 4 /PAA exhibited superior resistance to inorganic ions and nature organic matters, good recycle ability, excellent adaptability to various pollutants, and efficient performance for antibiotics removal in natural fresh water.

In this work, boron (B) was used to promote Fe 3+ /peracetic acid (Fe 3+ /PAA) for the degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT). An SMT degradation efficiency of 9.1% was observed in the Fe 3+ /PAA system over 60 min, which was significantly increased to 99.3% in the B/Fe 3+ /PAA system over 10 min. The B/Fe 3+ /PAA process also exhibited superior resistance to natural substances, excellent adaptability to different harmful substances, and good removal of antibiotics in natural fresh water samples. The mechanism of action of boron for Fe 3+ reduction was determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and electrochemical tests. The dominant role of • OH was confirmed using quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and quantitative tests. Organic radicals (R-O • ) and Fe(IV) also significantly contribute to the removal of SMT. DFT calculations on the reaction between Fe 2+ and the PAA were conducted to further determine the contribution from • OH, R-O • , and Fe(IV) from the perspective of thermodynamics and the reaction pathways. Different boron dosages, Fe 3+ dosages, and initial pH values were also investigated in the B/Fe 3+ /PAA system to study their effect of SMT removal and the production of the reactive species. Fe(IV) production determined the k R-O•+Fe(IV) value suggesting that Fe(IV) may play a more important role than R-O • . A comparison of the results with other processes has also proved that the procedure described in this study (B/Fe 3+ /PAA) is an effective method for the degradation of antibiotics.

The monoaminotrinitro iron phthalocyanine (FeMATNPc) is used to connect with isonicotinic acid (INA) for amide bonding and axial coordination to synthetic a unique catalyst FeMATNPc-INA, which is loaded in polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers by electrospinning. The introduction of INA destroys the π-π conjugated stack structure in phthalocyanine molecules and exposes more active sites. The FeMATNPc-INA structure is characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-visible absorption spectrum , and the FeMATNPc-INA/PAN structure is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The FeMATNPc-INA/PAN can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to eliminate carbamazepine (CBZ) within 40 minutes (PMS 1.5 mmol/L) in the dark. The effects of catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, pH and inorganic anion on the degradation of CBZ are investigated. It has been confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance, gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy and free radical capture experiments that the catalytic system is degraded by • OH, SO 4 •− and Fe (IV) = O are the major active species, the singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) is the secondary active species. The degradation process of CBZ is analyzed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and the aromatic compounds have been degraded to small molecular acids.
