Enhanced Bio-Electro-Fenton degradation of phenolic compounds based on a novel Fe–Mn/Graphite felt composite cathode

Biao Li,Zhi-Ying Yan,Xiao-Na Liu,Chen Tang,Jun Zhou,Xia-Yuan Wu,Ping Wei,Hong-Hua Jia,Xiao-Yu Yong

Phenolic compounds are problematic byproducts generated from lignocellulose pretreatment . In this study, the feasibility degradation of syringic acid (SA), vanillic acid (VA), and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) by Bio-Electro-Fenton (BEF) system with a novel Fe–Mn/graphite felt (Fe–Mn/GF) composite cathode were investigated. The nano-scale Fe–Mn multivalent composite catalyst with core shell structure distributed more evenly on GF surface to form a catalyst layer with higher oxygen reduction reaction performance. Accordingly, the maximum power density generated with Fe–Mn/GF cathode was 48.1% and 238.9% higher than Fe/GF and GF respectively, which further enhanced the in situ generation of H 2 O 2 due to the superiority of nano-scale core shell structure and synergistic effect of Fe and Mn species. The degradation efficiency of the three phenolic compounds in the BEF system could reached 100% after optimization of influencing parameters. Furthermore, a possible SA degradation pathway by BEF process in the present system was proposed based on the detected intermediates. These results demonstrated an efficient approach for the degradation of phenolic compounds derived from lignocellulose hydrolysates.

Boosting Microbial CO2 Electroreduction by the Biocompatible and Electroactive Bimetallic Fe–Mn Oxide Cathode for Acetate Production

Jin Du,Hebin Liang,Yubin Zou,Bing Li,Xiao-yan Li,Lin Lin

The electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to high-value organic chemicals by the microbial electrosynthesis (MES) system relies heavily on the electrochemical properties of the electrode materials. In this work, CO2 reduction for acetate production was greatly boosted by decorating the carbon felt cathode using the Fe–Mn bimetallic oxides, using an enriched anaerobic mixed culture dominated by the homoacetogen Acetobacterium wieringae. In comparison with the unmodified carbon felt as the cathode in the MES reactor, modification with MnFe2O4 increased the acetate production rate from 28 to 78 g/(m2·d), higher than those with MnO at 59 g/(m2·d) and Fe2O3 at 62 g/(m2·d), and the relative abundance of A. wieringae increased dramatically from 51 to 87% in the biofilm. This was probably due to the mediated electron uptake via the redox cycles of Mn(III)/(II) and Fe(III)/(II), improved specific surface area, and enhanced hydrophilicity of the cathode, benefiting from the synergistic effect of Fe and Mn ions. Overall, this study provides a facile and promising electrode modification strategy for MES with Fe–Mn bimetallic oxides for efficient CO2 conversion and acetate production, bringing the world closer to achieving carbon neutrality.

Long-term and efficient treatment of shale gas flowback wastewater by the novel double SEP@Fe-Mn/RGO composite membranes method

Xuehan Xiao,Zongxue Yu,Juan Wang,Shiyi Luo,Yan Huang,Dingmei Han,Junchen Li,Zhiquan Chen,Jie Wang,Minggang Huang

The long-term and efficient treatment of shale gas wastewater is an inevitable tendency. This study employed the SEP@Fe-Mn/RGO composite membrane series for the membrane separation treatment of shale gas wastewater. Different proportions and different function of SEP@Fe-Mn/RGO composite membranes were obtained through the method of electrostatic self-assembly. This study researched the “Trade-off” issue of membranes separation through the analysis, resulting in membranes that best meets the separation requirements for shale gas wastewater. After two membrane separation, The oil-water separation efficiency (COD 2040 mg/L and TOC 487.14 mg/L) of shale gas wastewater was >99.3 %. The removal rate of the main salt component (Na 2 SO 4 ) reached 83.56 %, and the removal rate of major heavy metal ions (Fe 3+ , Cr 3+ , Ba 2+ ) was above 60 %. Because of the continuous generation of in-situ bubbles by the reaction of MnO 2 with H 2 O 2 , and Fenton reactions on the membrane, which further accelerated the separation of pollutants. In a variety of harsh water environments, this membrane series remained stable within 12 h. Simple to prepare, cost-effective, low in energy consumption, and environmentally friendly, which makes it promising for wide applications in the field of petroleum water treatment.

Degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride in aqueous via combined dielectric barrier discharge plasma and Fe–Mn doped AC

Jian Cheng,Yirui Xie,Ying Wei,Dongrun Xie,Wenbo Sun,Ying Zhang,Menghong Li,Jiutao An

Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma coupled with Fe–Mn doped AC (Fe–Mn/AC) was used to enhance the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) wastewater. Fe–Mn/AC catalysts with different Fe/Mn molar ratios were prepared by hydrothermal method, and the physical and chemical properties of the samples were explored by different characterization techniques, including XRD, SEM , TEM and XPS. The results showed that the combination of DBD with Fe 2 –Mn 1 /AC system had the highest effect, and the degradation efficiency of TCH could reach 98.8 % after 15 min treatment, which was 25.5 % higher than that of DBD-only. With the increase of discharge voltage and catalyst dosage, the degradation efficiency of TCH promoted. And initial pH had little effect on the degradation of TCH. In the combined system, the Fe 2 –Mn 1 /AC catalyst could retain an excellent stability and reusability. The addition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) showed that ·OH participated in the TCH degradation. The generated O 3 might be catalyzed by Fe–Mn/AC catalyst to produce more ·OH. And more H 2 O 2 was produced in DBD-only system than that in DBD-catalytic system. Nine main degradation intermediate products in the combined system were detected by HPLC-MS, and three possible degradation pathways were proposed.

NaOH-modified biochar supported Fe/Mn bimetallic composites as efficient peroxymonosulfate activator for enhance tetracycline removal

Fawen Liang,Zhang Liu,Xueding Jiang,Jiesen Li,Kaibang Xiao,Weicheng Xu,Xin Chen,Jinzhi Liang,Zhifeng Lin,Meng Li,Xiaolian Wu,Hailong Wang

In this study, NaOH-modified biochar supported Fe/Mn bimetallic composite (Fe-Mn/AW-BC) was prepared to remove tetracycline (TC) through activating peroxymonosulfate   (PMS). Results showed that about 97.9 % of TC was degraded and the rate constant of Fe-Mn/AW-BC + PMS system was 37 folds higher than BC + PMS system. Experimental results confirmed that both radical and non-radical pathway were contribute to the catalytic system. Density functional theory (DFT) results also suggested that Fe-Mn/AW-BC sample was favorable for adsorbing PMS based on the length O O bond from PMS and the E ads of catalysts. The superior activation ability was ascribed to the accelerating formation of reaction active species and other oxidation species by bimetallic structures of Fe-Mn and oxygenated functional groups of BC. Additionally, the redox cycles of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ under Fe-Mn-BC synergism promoted the generation of the radicals, whereas the carbon shell effectively inhibited metals leaching of Fe-Mn/AW-BC, and 77.8 % of TC can be still removed within 60 min after five consecutive cycles. Notably, Fe-Mn/AW-BC system has special characteristic of wide pH usable range and broad-spectrum adaptability towards various organic pollutants and various water environments. Based on intermediate identification and Fukui function calculation, the degradation pathways of TC were also proposed. This study highlights the applications of biochar for the environmental catalysis.

Functional adjustment and cyclic application of Fe–Mn bimetal composite for Sb(V) removal: Transformation of iron oxides forms and a stable regeneration method

Kunlun Yang,Cheng Li,Xiaomin Wang,Yuanli Liu,Yizhou Li,Chuchen Zhou,Zheni Wang,Jiasheng Zhou,Zhen Cao,Xinhua Xu

In this work, the surface properties, functional groups and stability of Fe–Mn bimetal composite (FMBC) was modified through sintering to improve the weaknesses of pristine FMBC, such as poor separation performance, high amount of dissolved Fe and Mn, and easy phase transformation. Characterization analysis indicated that 2-line ferrihydrite in sintered FMBC (SFMC) gradually transformed into hematite with the phase-transition temperature of 450 °C. With the increasing sintering temperature and time, the dehydroxylation reaction enhanced and gradually became irreversible, while the BET surface area and porosity of SFMC firstly increased and then decreased, resulting in the initial increase and then sharp decrease of the amount of exposed hydroxyl groups on SFMC. The sintering treatment greatly improved the separation performance and stability of SFMC. 350 °C and 2 h were determined as the optimal sintering conditions of SFMC in this study and the calculated maximum adsorption capacity of optimal SFMC reached up to 95 mg/g. Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics model can describe the Sb(V) adsorption data well. As compared to pristine FMBC, optimal SFMC presented larger BET surface area and porosity, better separation performance and stability, lower dissolved Fe and Mn amount, larger cyclic adsorption efficiency and enough ability for Sb(V) removal in real textile wastewater. Furthermore, the inner sphere complexation between Sb(OH) 6 - and exposed hydroxyl groups played a key role in adsorption. Additionally, the NaCl + NaOH elution exhibited greater Sb(V) desorption performance and effectively retarded the phase transformation of SFMC than NaOH solution.

Preparation of Fe/Mn added active carbon composite as particle electrode for 3D electrochemical oxidation ammonia nitrogen from aqueous solution

Honghui Teng,Meng Zhang,Hongxue Du,Yuanqi Fang,Mingyue Piao

Three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical oxidation has emerged as a promising advanced oxidation process for wastewater treatment, owing to its high efficiency, environmental compatibility, and operational advantages. In this study, we developed a novel Fe/Mn co-loaded activated carbon (Fe/Mn-AC) particle electrode for the electrochemical oxidation of ammonium nitrogen NH 4 + -N) in wastewater. The as-prepared catalyst was systematically characterized through multiple analytical techniques including SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and BET surface area analysis. Post-impregnation, SEM revealed maintained surface smoothness but reduced pore sizes, while BET measurements confirmed decreased surface area (from 732.38 to 650.83 m 2 /g), pore diameter (from 2.6 to 2.18 nm), and pore volume (from 0.43 to 0.37 cm 3 /g). XRD and XPS analyses identified iron and manganese oxides (Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 , Mn 2 O 3 , Mn 3 O 4 ) as the active phases. FTIR spectra exhibited characteristic bands of O–H (3462 cm −1 ), C–O (1571 cm −1 ), and C–C (1384 cm −1 ) in both AC and Fe/Mn-AC, with observable intensity variations after metal loading. Under optimized conditions (pH = 7, applied voltage = 14 V, Fe/Mn loading = 1 %, initial NH 4 + -N concentration = 100 mg/L), the 3D electrochemical system achieved an NH 4 + -N removal efficiency of 87.64 % with an energy consumption of 6.2 kW h/kg NH4+-N after 8 h of treatment. Radical quenching experiments confirmed the in-situ generation of hydroxyl radicals and electrons during the electrochemical process. The degradation mechanism study revealed that NH 4 + -N was primarily removed through indirect electro-oxidation pathways, with N 2 identified as the dominant end product.

Constructing fast mass-transfer channels with efficient catalytic ozonation activity in 2D manganese dioxide membranes by intercalating Fe/Mn bimetallic MOF

Dandan Zhou,Shilong Li,Luyi Chai,Jian Lu,Tianxiang Yu,Yuqing Sun,Wenheng Jing

ABSTRACT Two-dimensional (2D) catalytic ozonation membranes are promising for the treatment of micropollutants in wastewater due to simultaneous ozone-catalyzed degradation and membrane filtration processes. However, it remains challenging for 2D catalytic ozonation membranes to efficiently degrade micropollutants due to low mass-transfer efficiency and poor catalytic activity. Herein, Fe/Mn bimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF) intercalated lamellar MnO 2 membranes with fast and robust ozone-catalyzed mass-transfer channels were developed on the surface of the hollow fiber ceramic membrane (HFCM) to obtain 2D Fe/Mn-MOF@MnO 2 -HFCM for efficiently degrading micropollutants in wastewater. The intercalation of Fe/Mn-MOF expanded the interlayer spacing of the MnO 2 membrane, thereby providing abundant transport channels for rapid passage of water. More notably, the Fe/Mn-MOF provided enriched reactive sites as well as high electron transfer efficiency based on the redox cycling between Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ , ensuring the effective catalytic oxidative degradation of micropollutants including tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), methylene blue, and methyl blue. Moreover, the carboxyl groups on the MOF formed covalent bonds (–COO–) with the hydroxyl groups in MnO 2 between layers, which increased the interaction between MnO 2 nanosheets to form stable interlayer channels. Specifically, the optimal composite membrane achieved a high removal rate of TCH micropollutant (93.4%), high water treatment capacity (282 L·m –2 ·h –1 ·MPa –1 ), and excellent long-term stability (1200 min). This study provides a simple and easily scalable strategy to construct fast, efficient, and stable 2D catalytic mass-transfer channels for the efficient treatment of micropollutants in wastewater.

A co-carbonization strategy for confining ultralow-loaded Fe/Mn dual sites in hierarchically porous N-doped carbon for synergistic CO2 electroreduction

Meifeng Wu,Qiaohui Ruan,Haixia Jiang,Longshuai Zhang,Dengke Wang,Jianping Zou

Recent studies have witnessed the great prospect of bi-atom catalysts (BACs) in realizing effective electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. However, the precisely controllable syntheses of BACs with outstanding properties remain a significant challenge. Herein, the first bi-atom Fe/Mn–N–C catalyst for CO2 reduction was successfully developed by the co-carbonization of Fe/Mn co-doped ZIF-8 (Fe/Mn@ZIF-8) and carbon black. This strategy enhances the conductivity and induces the confinement effect of carbon supports, which contributes to anchoring trace Fe/Mn dual sites on hierarchically porous N-doped carbon. The bimetallic Fe/Mn–N–C catalyst exhibits an excellent CO faradaic efficiency of 95.7% at a low overpotential of 370 mV vs. RHE. DFT results reveal that the coexistence of trace Mn sites can strengthen the catalytic capabilities of Fe active sites in bimetallic Fe/Mn–N–C. The synergistic effect of ultralow-loaded Fe/Mn dual sites is favorable for the adsorption and activation of CO2 as well as *CO desorption from Fe active sites, boosting the entire CO2-to-CO transformation. This work provides valuable insight into the rational design of BACs for efficient CO2 electroreduction.

Development of an MFC-powered BEF system with novel Fe–Mn–Mg/CF composite cathode to degrade refractory pollutants

Weiye Wang,Qingliang Zhao,Jing Ding,Kun Wang,Junqiu Jiang

Bio-electro-Fenton powered by microbial fuel cell (MFC-powered BEF) can in-situ generate and utilize hydrogen peroxide to degrade refractory pollutants. Most of the previous works loaded transition metal on the cathode to participate in the Fenton reaction showed limited electrical or degradation performance. The coupling of alkaline-earth metal (Mg 0 and MgO) and transition metal on cathode could improve the electrochemical and catalytic properties of MFC-powered BEF system, which had not been reported so far. In this research, a novel cathode of Fe–Mn–Mg/carbon fiber (Fe–Mn–Mg/CF) was developed with good polymerization effect of Mg to Fe and Mn, and outstanding production of reactive oxide species (•OH and •O 2 − ), which further improved the overall electricity generation efficiency and enhanced the degradation of pollutants. Accordingly, the maximum power density generated in MFC-powered BEF system with Fe–Mn–Mg/CF cathode was 2.07 times higher than that of the frequently used Fe–Mn/CF. Owing to the superiority of surface holes and MgO in H + adsorption and electron transfer , the integration of Fe, Mn with Mg promoted the in-situ generation of H 2 O 2 and active radicals, resulting in the highest catalytic performance of degrading refractory pollutants . Initial pH, external resistance, initial concentration of contaminant and cycle use frequency of cathode were also evaluated on the degradation efficiency of the BEF system. Furthermore, reaction and degradation mechanisms were proposed from H 2 O 2 production and free radical characterization. Overall, this study provided a novel cathode preparation approach for the MFC-powered BEF system, which vastly promoted its electrochemical and catalytic properties.

Applications and characteristics of Fe-Mn binary oxides for Sb(V) removal in textile wastewater: Selective adsorption and the fixed-bed column study

Kunlun Yang,Yuanli Liu,Yizhou Li,Zhen Cao,Chuchen Zhou,Zheni Wang,Xurui Zhou,Shams Ali Baig,Xinhua Xu

In this study, the selective adsorption performance of different Fe-Mn binary oxides (FMBOs) towards Sb(V) in the textile wastewater under different concentrations of coexisting anions, surfactants and dyes were investigated. Results showed that the influences of different anions on the Sb(V) removal followed an order of phosphate > carbonate > sulfate > nitrate > chloride. The frequently-used organic acid of acetate was found to have insignificant effect. The coexisting surfactant with sulfonic groups could have adverse effect on the removal due to sulfonic groups could compete the adsorptive sites on Fe oxides with Sb(V). While the quaternary ammonium surfactant might have minor effect. The influences of the three widely used dyes on the Sb(V) adsorption decreased in the following order: reactive black-5 >acid orange-7> disperse blue-60, which confirmed that the dyes with sulfonic groups would have relatively higher effect. The selective adsorption capacities of Sb(V) by FMBOs followed an order of FMBO 3 > FMBO 5 >FMBO 10 > FMBO 20 >PFO. Fixed-bed column adsorption supplied useful parameters and evidently indicated that the cyclic utilization of FMBO 3 was cost-efficient for practical dynamic Sb(V) removal. The Sb(V) removal by FMBO 3 from real textile wastewater can simultaneously improve the removal efficiency, stabilize pH and prevent the increase of iron concentration as compared to the traditional coagulation, further demonstrating the high practical applicability of FMBO 3 .

Preparation of catalysts by backwashing waste sludge with various Fe/Mn mass ratio to activate peroxymonosulfate for the degradation of tetracycline: Performance and mechanism

Ruifeng Zhang,Jingjing Tang,Jing Yang,Chuanyun Yang,Qiuyan Niu,Gang Wen

Tetracycline (TC) is a widely used antibiotic, which poses a significant threat to aquatic environments. In this study, the backwashing sludge with different Fe/Mn mass ratio was obtained by adjusting the concentration of Fe 2 + and Mn 2+ in the influent water of filters. After dehydrating, drying and thermal treatment, the sludge was prepared as Fe-Mn binary catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for removing TC from water. The removal performance, influence factors, and the degradation mechanism were investigated. The results indicated the prepared Fe-Mn sludge catalysts could effectively activate PMS to degrade TC and the activity was significantly influenced by the Fe/Mn ratio in the influent water. With Fe/Mn of 1:1 and 6:1, the sludge could be directly used as high activity catalysts; with Fe/Mn of 3:1, thermal treatment at 400 °C was required to enhance the activity. The fluidized-bed experiments showed that the Fe-Mn sludge catalysts had excellent activity stability and the ion leaching experiment indicated that the safe operational pH for the sludge catalysts should be above 5. The identification and quantification of reactive oxygen species proved that Mn was more beneficial to the generation of 1 O 2 , while Fe was more beneficial to the generation of SO 4 •─ and •OH, and TC was primarily degraded by 1 O 2 . Finally, based on the results of LC-MS characterization, the degradation pathway of TC was proposed, and the toxicity of the intermediates was assessed. The results provide new insights into the utilization of the Fe-Mn waste sludge as PMS catalysts for antibiotic removal.
