Carbon-based single-atom iron electrocatalysts with nitrogen coordination (CSAIN) have recently shown enormous promise to replace the costly Pt for boosting the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. However, there remains a great challenge to achieve highly efficient CSAIN catalysts for the ORR in acidic electrolytes. Herein, a novel CSAIN catalyst is synthesized by pyrolyzing a precursor mixture consisting of metal–organic framework and conductive polymer hybrid. After pyrolysis at a high temperature, the CSAIN with a structure of carbon nanosheet supported polyhedral carbon is achieved, where the unique structure endows CSAIN with expediting electron transfer and mass transport, as well as largely exposed surface to host atomically dispersed iron active sites. As a result, the optimal CSAIN catalyst shows a high ORR activity with its half-wave potential of 0.77 V (vs RHE) and a Tafel slope of 74.1 mV dec –1 , which are comparable to that of commercial Pt/C catalyst (0.80 V and 81.9 mV dec –1 ).

Large amounts of oily sludge generated during petroleum production pose dual challenges, including severe environmental risks and the inefficient utilization of intrinsic functional elements. Herein, hierarchical porous carbon nanosheets derived from acid-pretreated oily sludge (denoted as HOS) are prepared through a three-step process involving acid pretreatment, controlled pyrolysis, and post-activation, without introducing any external iron or nitrogen precursors. Benefiting from precursor-level regulation of intrinsic iron and nitrogen species, the optimized sample (HOS-8) exhibits a two-dimensional nanosheet architecture, hierarchical porosity, a high specific surface area, and abundant Fe–N x active sites. These structural and chemical features collectively facilitate rapid ion/electron transport and efficient charge storage. As a result, HOS-8 delivers a high specific capacitance of 333 F g -1 , excellent rate capability with 79.4% capacitance retention at 10 A g -1 , and outstanding cycling stability with 95.5% retention after 10,000 cycles. A symmetric supercapacitor device assembled using HOS-8 achieves an energy density of 13.6 Wh kg -1 , outperforming many reported heteroatom-doped carbon electrodes. This work demonstrates a feasible strategy for converting iron- and nitrogen-containing oily sludge into functional carbon materials and provides insights into the rational design of waste-derived electrodes for energy storage applications.

Graphical There's no space : Highly dispersed Fe−N x anchored on concave N-doped carbon is synthesized by space-confined strategy. The resulting NC@Fe−N−C exhibits superior oxygen reduction activity, originating from the combination of intrinsic activity and acceleration of mass electron transfer. Carbon-based electrocatalysts with atomically dispersed Fe−N−C display promising performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) amongst non-precious electrocatalysts. Nonetheless, increasing the number and utilization of Fe−N−C active sites is challenging. Designing morphologies and adjusting the pore structure of carbon-based electrocatalysts would boost the mass transfer, enhance the utilization of the active sites, and increase the overall ORR performance. In this work, a concave N-doped carbon cubes structure adorned with highly external Fe−N x was designed and produced by the space-confined induced strategy. The optimal electrocatalyst revealed excellent ORR activity in both alkaline and acidic electrolytes, with half-wave potentials of 0.86 and 0.75 V, respectively. The superior performance arose from its unique concave structure, possessing more accessible active sites with improved intrinsic activity, which holds promising potential for preparing advanced ORR electrocatalysts.

Establishing an efficient and sensitive electrochemical sensor for paracetamol (PCM) is of significant importance in pharmaceutical quality control and environmental protection. This paper reports a novel electrochemical sensing platform based on a ZIF-8-derived strategy for fabricating N-doped porous carbon with monodispersed Fe-N x sites (Fe-N/NPC). The introduction of iron phthalocyanine (Fe-Pc) molecules fixed within the ZIF-8 framework prevents the aggregation of metal species during high-temperature treatment, ensuring the high dispersion of Fe-N x sites. Under optimized conditions, Fe-N/NPC-10/GCE electrochemical sensor exhibits excellent performance for PCM detection, which is mainly attributed to the synergistic enhancement between Fe-N x and NPC. The high surface area of NPC with a porous structure and N doping effect, which enhances its adsorption capacity for PCM, facilitating electron transfer and thereby amplifying the response signal. At the same time, the high-density monodispersed Fe-N x provides abundant catalytic active sites, improving electrocatalytic activity. Through the investigation of how buffer solution pH affects the oxidation peak induced by PCM, a pH of 7.0 was ultimately determined to be the optimal value. Using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), the Fe-N/NPC-10/GCE electrochemical sensor demonstrates a wide detection range (0.1–10, 10–150 μM) for PCM with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.019 μM. Furthermore, the sensor exhibits good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility, and has been successfully applied for the determination of PCM in real pharmaceutical samples, with a recovery rate close to 100 %, indicating that the analytical method performs well and is suitable for analysis of real samples.

·N-doped Fe 3 O 4 @CNTs with Fe-Nx and oxygen vacancies was fabricated for efficient ORR electrocatalysis. • The catalyst shows onset potential of 0.87 V and superior stability toward oxygen reduction reaction. • Zinc–air battery delivers 173.90 mW·cm −2 power density and stable running for 280 h. • Synergy of oxygen vacancies and Fe-Nx sites boosts ORR activity and structural stability. A composite catalyst consisting of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles coated with nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Fe 3 O 4 @CNTs) was synthesized via in situ pyrolysis using heme-modified CNTs. Benefiting from the CNT coating and oxygen vacancies, the catalyst exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.88 V for oxygen reduction in alkaline media, with stability surpassing commercial Pt/C. In zinc-air batteries, it achieves a power density of 173.90 mW·cm −2 and maintains stable operation over 280 h. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the CNT coating provides a 3D conductive network, prevents Fe 3 O 4 agglomeration, and modulates the electronic structure of the active-sites via Fe–N interactions. Meanwhile, abundant oxygen vacancies are introduced into Fe 3 O 4 , optimizing O 2 adsorption and reducing reaction barriers. This work offers new insights into the design of iron-based oxide electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for renewable energy applications.

It is highly desirable to develop high-efficiency non-precious electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, Fe 2 O 3 -encapsulated and Fe-Nx-containing porous carbon spheres (Fe 2 O 3 /N-MCCS) with unique multi-cage structures and high specific surface area (1360 m 2 g −1 ) are fabricated. The unique porous structure of Fe 2 O 3 /N-MCCS ensures fast transportation of oxygen during ORR. The combined effect of Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and Fe-Nx configurations endows Fe 2 O 3 /N-MCCS (E 1/2 = 0.837 V vs. RHE) with superior ORR activity and methanol tolerance to Pt/C. And, Fe 2 O 3 /N-MCCS exhibits better stability than nitrogen-modified carbon. The characterization results of Fe 2 O 3 /N-MCCS after long-term test reveals its excellent structural stability. Impressively, zinc-air battery based on Fe 2 O 3 /N-MCCS showed a peak power density of 132.4 mW cm −2 and a specific capacity of 797 mAh g −1 , respectively.

The development of highly active and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is crucial for the advancement of zinc-air batteries. A dual-ligand stepwise preordination strategy is employed to synthesize the Fe–Ce bimetallic carbon-based catalyst (Ce/Fe–NC) with abundant Fe–N x /Ce–N x sites and Fe 3 O 4 , and a hierarchical micropore-mesopore structure. The introduction of Ce-related species significantly modulates the electronic structure of Fe sites, which is consistent with possible d–f orbital hybridization and d -band center regulation of Fe. Such electronic effect reduces the ORR energy barrier and endows Ce/Fe–NC with a half-wave potential of 0.875 V. The prepared CeO 2 with a fast Ce 3 + /Ce 4+ redox couple efficiently scavenges reactive oxygen species to inhibit the degradation of Fe–Nₓ sites and Fe 3 O 4 species, as well as the corrosion of carbon skeleton caused by Fenton reaction byproducts, ultimately enhancing the stability of the Ce/Fe–NC. After 30,000 accelerated cycles, the half-wave potential of the Ce/Fe–NC only decreases by 15 mV, and maintains a 95.4% current retention rate over 10,000 s. The zinc-air battery with Ce/Fe–NC achieves a peak power density of 230 mW cm −2 , a specific energy of 870.5 Wh kg –1 (Zn) , and a stable charge-discharge voltage gap over 100 h of cycling. This work provides a novel strategy for the preparation of high-performance non-precious metal ORR catalysts.

Upgrading sludge to Fe-N-C catalysts via a precoordination-mediated active center evolution strategy • The catalysts possess active sites featuring subnanometer cluster coupled with single atom • DFT reveals electronic coupling effect that enhances ORR kinetic • The catalyst shows superior ORR activity and power output in ZAB and MFC The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a critical limitation for green energy conversion technologies. Although Fe-N-C single-atom catalysts offer high atomic utilization, their symmetric coordination environments limit electronic flexibility and catalytic activity. Herein, a precoordination-mediated active center evolution strategy is developed to construct dual scale cluster-single atom Fe-N x active centers using municipal sludge as a low-cost precursor. During the citric acid-assisted hydrothermal process, protein hydrolysis induces the release and redistribution of nitrogen-containing species, forming a precoordinated environment that enables the formation of subnanometer clusters and isolated single-atom sites. Subsequent activation removes mineral species and constructs a hierarchical porous carbon framework with high specific surface area and enhanced mass transport. Density functional theory calculations reveal that electronic coupling between clusters and single atoms induces long-range electronic modulation, shifting the d-band center and optimizing the adsorption energetics of oxygen intermediates. As a result, the catalyst exhibits excellent ORR activity across a wide pH range, delivering a half-wave potential of 0.86 V in alkaline media and outperforming Pt/C in acidic and neutral electrolytes. A Zn-air battery achieves a peak power density of 195 mW cm -2 , while microbial fuel cells deliver 1589 mW m -2 with 54% pollutant degradation. Life-cycle assessment indicates reduced carbon emissions compared with sludge incineration. This work provides a controllable strategy for constructing dual-scale active centers and highlights their promise in green energy conversion and nano-enabled electrocatalysis. Municipal sludge-derived Fe-N 4 single atoms coupled with subnanometer Fe clusters enable electronic coupling, d-band regulation and weakened OH* adsorption, delivering efficient oxygen reduction for zinc-air batteries and microbial fuel cells. Developing cost-effective and efficient non-precious metal oxygen reduction catalysts (ORRs) is crucial for advancing renewable energy technologies. This study reports the synthesis and characterization of a novel non-precious metal catalyst, N–C–Fe-600, synthesized via a simple two-step method. Pyrolysis of NH 2 –MIL-88(Fe) under an inert atmosphere, followed by acidic treatment, yielded a porous N–C–Fe-600 material featuring a high surface area and a substantial concentration of active Fe–N x sites. Electrochemical characterization revealed that N–C–Fe-600 exhibits ORR activity comparable to commercial Pt/C catalysts, along with significantly enhanced stability and methanol tolerance. The catalyst demonstrates a near-ideal four-electron transfer pathway, suggesting its potential as a viable alternative to platinum-based catalysts in fuel cells.

In this study, we synthesized a nitrogen rich compound (FPPHA) as the precursor of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, which was prepared based on 1,10-phenanthroline-5-amine and 2,2’-bipyridyl-5,5’-dialdehyde. The FPPHA-Fe complex was formed and be loaded on the carbon powder to form the FPPHA-Fe/C composite catalyst. The pyrolysis of the FPPHA-Fe/C composite was conducted at different temperatures, including 700 °C, 800 °C, and 900 °C, and the resultant pyrolyzed materials were designated to FPPHA-Fe/C-700, FPPHA-Fe/C-800, FPPHA-Fe/C-900, respectively. The physical characteristics of the catalysts were examined by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) etc. The ORR performance of the composite catalysts were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and rotating ring disk electrodes (RRDE) in an alkaline solution. The results suggested that the pyrolysis process has a positive effect on the ORR activity of the catalysts, and among the catalysts the Fe-FPPHA/C-800 had the most preferable performance, which reduces oxygen through a predominantly four electron pathway with an average electron transfer number of 3.86 and an average hydrogen peroxide yield of 6.7%.

The development of non-previous-metal electrocatalyst with low cost, high activity and stability towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a challenge. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as promising candidates for the preparation of porous metal/nitrogen co-doped carbon catalysts. In the present work, porous Fe-N x nanoclusters/carbon catalysts are prepared by pyrolyzing iron-containing covalent-triazine organic frameworks. It is found that the synthesis conditions including pyrolysis temperature and pressure have great impacts on the surface area of micropores, mesopores and macropores, which in turn influences the ORR activity of catalysts by varying the mass diffusion and the contact of active centers with electrolytes. The optimized catalyst (denoted as Fe 1.2 NC-0.02-800), having the highest both BET and external surface areas, shows much higher kinetic current density and catalytic stability than commercial Pt/C catalyst in ORR process. When being assembled into Zn-air battery, it also exhibits excellent performances in terms of open circuit voltage (1.45 V), power density (210 mW cm −2 at 330 mA cm −2 ) and specific capacity (713.1 mA h g Z n − 1 ), which outperform the corresponding values of Pt/C-based Zn-air battery. Moreover, 15 light-emitting diodes can be powered by two series-connected Zn-air batteries with Fe 1.2 NC-0.02-800 as the air-cathode catalyst, implying its promising application in clean energy conversion field.

Zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF)-derived iron–nitrogen-carbon (Fe N C) materials are expected to be high-efficiency catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, increasing the density of active sites while avoiding metal accumulation still faces significant challenges. Herein, solvent environment engineering is used to synthesize the Fe N C containing dense Fe-N x moieties by adjusting the solvent during the ZIF precursor synthesis process. Compared with methanol and water/methanol, the aqueous media can provide a more moderate Fe content for the ZIF precursor, which facilitates the construction of high-density Fe-N x sites and prevent the appearance of iron-based nanoparticles during pyrolysis. Therefore, the Fe N C(C) nanocubes synthesized in an aqueous media have the highest single atom Fe loading (0.6 at%) among the prepared samples, which presents excellent oxygen reduction properties and durability under alkaline and acidic conditions. The advantage of Fe N C(C) is proven in Zn-air batteries, with outstanding performance and long-term stability.
