Dual-role phytic acid etching induces shell-in-shell Fe2P/N,P-codoped carbon nanoboxes for oxygen reduction

Hui Liu,Rong Lin,Yi Wu,Zhihao Huang,Yuchang Shen,Xuanxuan Lin,Nan Li,Shaoda Huang,Qipeng Li,Jinjie Qian

The rational design and facile synthesis of non‑platinum carbon catalysts with high energy conversion efficiency remain a core challenge in electrocatalysis. To address this, we successfully constructed a unique shell-in-shell catalyst through a phytic acid (PA) etching and secondary pyrolysis strategy, designated as CZIF-PA-Fe 2 P/NC. In this process, PA not only drives the selective etching of cubic ZIF-8 nanocrystals but also serves as an in situ phosphorus source to induce the uniform nucleation of highly active Fe 2 P nanoparticles embedded in ZIF-derived N,P-codoped carbon nanoboxes. Consequently, the obtained CZIF-PA-Fe 2 P/NC catalyst achieves an excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) half-wave potential of 0.914 V, and maintains a 96.73% current retention over a 30-h stability test. When assembled into zinc-air batteries, the device delivers a peak power density of 157.58 mW cm −2 , a specific capacity of 795.76 mAh g −1 , and long-term cycling stability surpassing that of 20 wt% Pt/C. Finally, density functional theory calculations reveal that the synergistic electronic modulation between the N,P-codoped carbon substrate and Fe 2 P promotes an upward shift of the Fe d -band center, thereby optimizing the adsorption of key *OOH intermediates and significantly reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step. This work establishes a precise morphology design and interface engineering paradigm for developing cost-effective, high-performance metal-organic framework-derived non-noble-metal carbon electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage applications. The selective etching of phytic acid not only endows the material with abundant pore diameters to enhance mass transfer but also serves as an in-situ phosphorus source to promote the uniform nucleation of highly active Fe 2 P nanoparticles. By employing PA-induced etching, shell-in-shell carbon catalysts were successfully fabricated to exhibit satisfactory oxygen reduction. Heterostructure CoP2-Fe2P//CoWO4 as a pH-universal and multifunctional catalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution and ethanol oxidation

Wenjun Qin,Yong Zhang,Kai Xiang,Zhaoxia Li,Ziyang Wen,Zixun Wang,Jingying Sun,Peng-Fang Zhang,Zhiping Dai,Chun Jiang,Haiqing Zhou,Xiaolin Wei,Yuxue Mo

Developing highly efficient and economical electrocatalysts with both high activity and excellent stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) remains a significant challenge. In our work, a heterostructure CoP 2 -Fe 2 P//CoWO 4 catalyst has been successfully integrated onto Ni foam via a two-step hydrothermal reaction and a phosphorization process. Electrochemical evaluations confirm a synergistic catalytic effect between CoP 2 and Fe 2 P. The CoP 2 -Fe 2 P//CoWO 4 catalyst exhibits enhanced HER catalytic activity across a wide pH range, requiring relatively low overpotentials of only 42, 138 and 32 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 under alkaline, neutral and acidic conditions, respectively. Meanwhile, for the EOR, the CoP 2 -Fe 2 P//CoWO 4 catalyst requires a potential of only 1.37 V to achieve 100 mA cm −2 , which is much lower than that required for the OER (1.53 V). Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Raman spectroscopy reveal that high-valence metal species CoOOH and FeOOH are likely the real active species responsible for water dissociation and EOR, respectively. This work may provide a new pathway for heterostructured catalysts based on transition metal phosphides in the field of small-molecule electrolysis.

Fe2P nanoparticles-doped carbon nanofibers with enhanced electrons transfer capability as a self-supporting anode for potassium-ion battery

Huilan Sun,Ya Su,Fei Yuan,Zhaojin Li,Wen Li,Haitao Sun,Yazhao Li,Yan Zhang,Bo Wang

Carbonaceous materials with various structures and morphologies have been widely investigated as anode for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), owing to their low cost, non-toxicity, environmental-benignity, etc. Among them, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) synthesized by electrospinning technique usually exhibit higher flexibility, thus they can be directly used as a self-supporting electrode. Accordingly, the overall electrochemical performance is obviously improved, and the batteries assembly procedure is also greatly simplified. However, intrinsic electronic conductivity of CNFs cannot sufficiently meet fast charging/discharging requirements at high current densities. Herein, iron phosphide nanoparticles-doped CNFs (Fe 2 P-CNFs) are well fabricated by electrospinning, phosphorylation, and carbonization route. The resulting Fe 2 P-CNFs, their internal Fe 2 P nanoparticles with high electronic conductivity (3.3 × 10 −1 S cm −1 , Fe 2 P single crystal) can accelerate electrons transfer, and simultaneously create numerous defects for K-ions storage. Besides, amorphous features of CNFs can provide adequate sites/voids to accommodate more K-ions. Based on this, when Fe 2 P-CNFs are used as a self-supporting anode for PIBs, they deliver excellent reversible capacity (379.2 mAh g   −   1 ), high-rate capability, and ultra-long cycle lifespan (179.6 mAh g   −   1 over 2000 cycles at 2000 mA g   −   1 ). Therefore, this work demonstrates the unique merits of Fe 2 P doping for improving conductivity, which may help exploit other carbon materials with high performance.

Engineering built-in electric fields through p-n heterojunction construction for enhanced dual-functional water electrolysis in Co2P/Fe2P systems

Ang Li,Baiyu Ren,Heng Yang,Hui Min Gu,Bao Yue Zhang,Nikhil V. Medhekar,Xinyi Hu,Hao Yu,Yinfen Cheng,Yuefeng Yin,Zhong Li,Jian Zhen Ou

The rational design of heterostructured electrocatalysts with efficient charge transfer pathways is crucial for advancing sustainable water-splitting technology. In this work, a bimetallic Co 2 P/Fe 2 P heterojunction catalyst is successfully synthesized on nickel foam (NF) through a hydrothermal method followed by controlled phosphorization. The heterointerface between Co 2 P and Fe 2 P induces a strong built-in electric field (BEF) due to their distinct Fermi level alignment, as confirmed by Mott-Schottky analysis and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). This BEF gives rise to electron-deficient Co regions and electron-enriched Fe regions near the heterointerface, which is expected to modulate the local electronic structure and facilitate interfacial charge transfer, thereby benefiting the overall HER/OER kinetics. The as-prepared Co 2 P/Fe 2 P@NF exhibits exceptional bifunctional activity in alkaline media, achieving low overpotentials of 109 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 165 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 20 mA cm −2 , with Tafel slopes of 54.8 mV dec −1 and 31.5 mV dec −1 , respectively. A two-electrode electrolyzer assembled with Co 2 P/Fe 2 P@NF as both anode and cathode requires only 1.50 V to deliver 20 mA cm −2 , surpassing most reported non-noble metal catalysts. Systematic characterizations (XPS, TEM, EIS) reveal that the hierarchical nanoplate structure with abundant heterointerfaces provides a high electrochemical surface area (17.4 mF cm −2 ) and facilitates electrolyte penetration. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits outstanding long-term durability, retaining at least 98% of its initial performance after 20 h of continuous operation at 20 mA cm −2 under both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) conditions. This work highlights the pivotal role of interfacial BEF engineering in developing high-performance electrocatalysts for practical water-splitting applications.

A spore-derived Fe2P/biochar composite for efficient tetracycline degradation: Reaction mechanism investigation, antibacterial activity elimination and antibiotic resistance risk mitigation

Linli Dai,Xuqian Wang,Xiuyuan Ran,Yongkui Zhang,Yabo Wang

Fe 2 P/N-doped biochar (FeBC900) was derived from Aspergillus niger spores. • FeBC900 showed high PDS activation, broad pH adaptability and low Fe leaching. • Surface-bound radicals and 1 O 2 served as dominant reactive species in TC removal. • The FeBC900/PDS system reduced TC antibacterial activity and resistance induction. The widespread utilization of tetracyclines (TCs) has resulted in their continuous discharge and dissemination into aquatic environments, thereby accelerating the spread of antibiotic resistance genes, which threaten the natural ecosystem and human health. To address tetracycline pollution in aquatic environments, the Fe 2 P/biochar (FeBC900) composite synthesized from Aspergillus niger spores was used to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for TC degradation. The FeBC900 composite preserved the pumpkin-like hollow structure of spore, with Fe 2 P nanoparticles tightly embedded and dispersed in the spore-derived carbon matrix. The excellent physicochemical properties of FeBC900, such as large specific surface area, well-developed hierarchical porous structure, high density of surface defects, and abundant reactive sites (pyridinic N, graphitic N, and Fe 2 P nanoparticles), ensured its effective activation of PDS, thus leading to the efficient TC removal (>99%) within 30 min under optimized reaction conditions. Attributed to the superior structural stability of FeBC900 with the effective immobilization and encapsulation of Fe 2 P nanoparticles, FeBC900/PDS reaction system presented broad pH adaptability and low Fe ions leaching. Quenching experiments combined with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) identified surface-bound radicals and 1 O 2 as the predominant reactive oxygen species responsible for TC degradation. Impressively, the antibacterial activity test and bacterial resistance mutation test confirmed that the ecological risk of the treated TC solution was significantly reduced, particularly in terms of its induction of bacterial antibiotic resistance. Overall, this work provides a practical solution to mitigate TC pollution and the consequent risk of bacterial antibiotic resistance. Li-Xia Wang,Jia-Sui Huang,Xiao-Yang Cheng,Zhi-Yang Huang,A-Lin Zhou,Shu-Hui Sun,Xiu-Lin Yang,Tian-Xiao Sun,Bin Wu

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section The design of nanoparticles confined in hollow N-doped carbon structures is crucial for improving the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics, yet achieving this remains a significant challenge. In this work, hollow porous nitrogen-doped carbon encapsulated FeP/Fe 2 P (H-FeP/Fe 2 P) were successfully constructed via a templating method combined with dopamine hydrochloride coating, acid etching, and subsequent high-temperature phosphating. In situ spectroelectrochemical investigations and theoretical results demonstrate that the adsorbed hydroxyl species (*OH) can be readily released from the catalyst surface by facilitating the dissociation of oxygen–oxygen bonds at the active sites of Fe, thus accelerating the kinetics of the ORR. The optimized H-FeP/Fe 2 P achieves a high limiting current density of 5.5 mA cm −2 and a low Tafel slope of 39 mV dec −1 in 0.1 M KOH, outperforming corresponding solid samples and most reported transition metal phosphide catalysts. Moreover, the H-FeP/Fe 2 P-based aqueous ZAB exhibits remarkable performance, including high peak power density (175 mW cm −2 ), large specific capacity (813 mAh g −1 Zn ), and stable charge/discharge stability over 800 h. The corresponding solid-state zinc-air battery also delivers a high peak power density of 101 mW cm −2 and excellent flexibility. The carbon confinement strategy proposed in this study opens new avenues for developing high-performance and cost-effective non-precious metal ORR catalysts in zinc-air batteries. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 将纳米颗粒限域于中空氮掺杂碳结构中的设计对提升氧还原反应(ORR)动力学性能至关重要,但实现这一目标是一个重大挑战。
