An efficient FeOCl for persulfate (PS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalysis was synthesized by one-step method, followed by the exploration of structure and morphology using a range of techniques, such as XPS, FT–IR and SEM. Catalytic mechanism of FeOCl for PS and PMS was investigated to demonstrate its excellent catalytic performance. The results indicated that FeOCl had loose structure, large specific surface area and exposed active sites. Its strong Fe–O and Fe–Cl bonds could promote electron transfer, thereby accelerating the reduction of Fe 3+ and improving the catalytic rate and utilization rate of oxidants. Since FeOCl had unique and superior structure, it could be used to catalyze 2 persulfates PS and PMS to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TTCH) and had good degradation efficiency and degradation stability. When prepared at 250 °C, FeOCl had the best catalytic performance. After 60 min, the degradation rate of TTCH under FeOCl/PS system was 78%, and under FeOCl/PMS system was 81%. After ten cycles, the degradation rate of TTCH still reached 80%. And this catalytic system had wide adaptability to pH. This work highlighted the catalytic versatility of FeOCl in persulfate and proved its application in the treatment of toxic organic wastewater through actual wastewater treatment experiment, which provided a scientific basis for enhancing catalytic performance of FeOCl. A CuCo-LDH/FeOCl nanocomposite for macroscopic superlubricity is designed. • Stable macroscopic superlubricity is achieved under elevated loads (up to 75 N). • An ultralow friction coefficient ( ca. 0.0037) is realized in PEG200. Achieving stable superlubricity under elevated loads remains a significant challenge due to the fragility of conventional lubrication interfaces. Herein, a hierarchical CuCo layered double hydroxide/FeOCl nanocomposite is rationally designed via a microwave-assisted method to realize macroscopic superlubricity under elevated applied loads. The ultralow friction coefficient of ca . 0.0037 and the maintained superlubricity under loads up to 75 N may be attributed to the synergistic effects of the layered architecture, interlayer interactions and reactions, and tribochemical processes. Detailed characterization suggests that tribochemical evolution occurs during sliding, accompanied by possible Fe-O-M (M = Cu, Co) interfacial interactions, which may facilitate shear-induced structural evolution and interlayer sliding. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect between FeOCl and CuCo-LDH may contribute to the formation of a protective tribofilm at the friction interface. Repeated start-stop tests indicate that the real-time COF mainly fluctuates within 0.001–0.0075, maintaining stable superlubricity. This work provides new insights into the design of high-performance lubricating materials and offers a promising strategy for achieving stable superlubricity under elevated loads. FeOCl acts as a bifunctional co-catalyst on the Ti-Fe 2 O 3 photoanode for PEC water splitting. • FeOCl cocatalyst forms a type-II heterojunction with Ti-Fe 2 O 3 and boosts OER kinetics. • FeOCl can activate the lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism for accelerated OER. • AlOOH interlayer works synergistically with FeOCl to improve charge separation. • FeOCl/Al/Ti-Fe 2 O 3 photoanode achieves a photocurrent density 3.32 times that of bare Ti-Fe 2 O 3 . The photoelectrochemical water splitting performance of hematite photoanodes is limited by both poor charge separation and sluggish surface reaction kinetics. Herein, FeOCl is in situ deposited on Ti-doped Fe 2 O 3 (Ti-Fe 2 O 3 ) as an efficient co-catalyst with a bifunctional role. FeOCl forms a type-II heterojunction with Ti-Fe 2 O 3 that enhances bulk charge separation and accelerates charge transfer, potentially due to the activation of the lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM) to accelerate oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. Furthermore, an AlOOH interlayer introduced between FeOCl and Ti-Fe 2 O 3 reinforces the built-in electric field and works synergistically with FeOCl to further improve charge separation. The FeOCl/Al/Ti-Fe 2 O 3 photoanode delivers an optimized photocurrent density of 2.85 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE and 3.88 mA cm −2 at 1.50 V vs. RHE, outperforming both single-modifier photoanodes. This work demonstrates a dual-function design strategy that couples heterojunction formation with LOM activation, guiding the development of multi-component photoanodes. In this study, a BiVO 4 photoanode was prepared via electrodeposition, and FeOCl was subsequently loaded onto its surface by calcination to construct a novel n–n type FeOCl/BiVO 4 heterojunction photoanode with a S-scheme charge transfer pathway. Using levofloxacin (LVF) as the target pollutant, the photoelectrocatalytic performance of various photoanodes was systematically evaluated. Under an applied bias of 0.6 V and 0.075 mM PMS, the FeOCl/BiVO 4 photoanode achieved a 79% LVF removal efficiency within 30 minutes, representing a 39% enhancement over pristine BiVO 4 , along with significant mineralization capacity. The addition of PMS notably improved the degradation performance. Photoelectrochemical analyses revealed that FeOCl suppressed charge recombination and enhanced PEC activity. Scavenger experiments demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals (·OH), superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ), sulfate radicals (SO 4 · − ), and photogenerated holes ( h + ) all contributed to the pollutant degradation. Furthermore, pH adaptability, anion interference, and cyclic stability tests demonstrated the photoanode’s broad pH tolerance, excellent anti-interference ability, and good reusability. Notably, the FeOCl/BiVO 4 photoanode also exhibited effective degradation of other typical organic pollutants, such as tetracycline, carbamazepine, and ciprofloxacin, highlighting its promising application potential.

An innovative ACF/CC@FeOCl-assisted FTEF-SR system was established. • FeOCl-Cu served as catalyst for the electro-Fenton and as a PMS activator. • The primary generated reactive oxygen species were • OH and SO 4 · − . • Preferential removal of sulfamethoxazole was achieved in different water matrices. • The system exhibits good stability and energy-saving performance. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a representative sulfonamide antibiotic contaminant, poses significant environmental risks. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation-driven electro-Fenton (EF) processes have attracted considerable attention for the removal of organic pollutants from water. In this study, a flow-through heterogeneous EF system integrated with PMS activation (FTEF-SR) was developed using a FeOCl-Cu-modified carbon cloth cathode for the efficient degradation of SMX. The FTEF-SR system exhibited broad pH adaptability and excellent recyclability. Under optimized conditions, near-complete removal of SMX (>99%) was achieved within 60 min. Meanwhile, the effects of catalyst dosage and ratio, current, PMS concentration, electrolyte type, pH, as well as initial concentration were systematically investigated. At a current density of 9 mA cm⁻ 2 and a PMS concentration of 1 mM, SMX and total organic carbon (TOC) removal reached 98.9% (30 min) and 80.2% (180 min), respectively. Moreover, the real-world water matrix and common coexisting ions did not significantly inhibit the removal efficiency of SMX, still maintaining above 92%, indicating that this coupling method was feasible in real application. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests revealed that • OH and SO 4 •– dominated the degradation of SMX in the FTEF-SR system. Overall, this work not only advances the development of efficient and sustainable wastewater purification technologies but also provides valuable mechanistic insights for the degradation of antibiotic contaminants. Nanozymes have been emerging as substitutes for natural enzymes to construct biosensors towards biomolecular detection. However, the detection of glutathione (GSH) by nanozyme-based biosensors still remains a great challenge for research on catalytic activity enhancement and the detection mechanism. In this work, Sb-doped iron oxychloride (Sb-FeOCl) with a well-defined nanorod-like structure is prepared by high-temperature calcination. Sb-FeOCl nanorods have high peroxidase-like activity, which can catalyze the decomposition of H 2 O 2 into ·OH and then oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). In view of these intriguing observations, a reliable colorimetric method with a simple mixing and detection strategy is developed for the detection of GSH. The linear range of GSH detection is 1–36 μM. The detection limit of GSH reaches a low level of 0.495 μM (3σ/slope). The GSH sensing system also exhibits excellent specificity and anti-interference. Taking advantage of the advantages of the Sb-FeOCl nanorod-based biosensor, it can be used to quantitatively detect GSH levels in human serum. It can be anticipated that the Sb-FeOCl nanorods have broad prospects in the field of enzymatic biochemical reactions. Graphical Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, with an atomic thickness and exceptional properties, hold great promise for next-generation devices and flexible electronics. However, these applications face integration challenges due to high-temperature synthesis and transfer-induced degradation. Here, we demonstrate the ultralow-temperature growth of high-quality 2D FeOCl, enabling its direct integration into heterostructures and flexible substrates. The synthesized 2D FeOCl exhibits high crystallinity, uniformity, and intrinsic structural and optical anisotropy. Using this method, we synthesized FeOCl-based vertical heterostructures on both layered 2D MoS2 and nonlayered 2D Fe3O4. The heterostructures exhibit highly ordered quasi-one-dimensional moiré superlattices and anisotropic second harmonic generation (SHG) patterns. Theoretical calculations attribute these properties to anisotropic charge redistribution at the interfaces. This work establishes a versatile low-temperature platform for synthesizing and integrating 2D materials, providing both a pathway for polarization-sensitive optoelectronics and spintronic devices and a scalable synthetic route to explore emergent one-dimensional (1D) quantum physics.

Iron oxychloride (FeOCl) is utilized as a activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of paracetamol (APAP) and phenacetin (PNCT) in response to the water pollution by persistent pharmaceuticals. The degradation process was well fitted with a pseudo-first order kinetic pattern, and the excellent catalytic performance towards APAP (100 % removal) and PNCT (86.5 % removal) was obtained in the presence of 0.2 g/L FeOCl and 2.0 mM PMS at pH 7.0 in 30 min. In-situ electron spin resonance (ESR) and scavenging tests revealed the generation of a series of ROS ( · OH, SO 4 − , O 2 − , 1 O 2 ), which was highly dependent on pH. Besides, the non-radical pathways process involved 1 O 2 was dominant in APAP oxidation, while both · OH and 1 O 2 are significant in PNCT removal. Furthermore, the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during post-chlorination showed neglectable increment at neutral and alkaline condition with FeOCl/PMS pre-oxidation, and the calculated cytotoxicity would experience a continuous deterioration with pH increase. These results displayed high efficiency of FeOCl/PMS system in micropollutants degradation and a relatively comprehensive activation process of PMS, which may promote practical application in environmental remediation.

Thiol-disulfide exchange, one of the most popular dynamical combinatorial chemistries under physiological conditions, typically requires long equilibration times to reach the desired equilibrium composition. We successfully synthesized Cysteine-iron oxychloride (Cys-FeOCl) nanobelts by introducing L-cysteine as a dispersing agent during the liquid-phase exfoliation of FeOCl. This material utilizes the L-cysteine thiol group ( SH) to accelerate the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle, significantly enhancing the peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity, and constructing a coupling network of “cysteine-cystine” biochemical redox pair and “Fe 2+ -Fe 3+ chemical metal valence state cycling”, thereby continuously generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Experimental results reveal that Cys-FeOCl exhibited 100% antibacterial efficiency against Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at 2 μg·mL −1 , and 99% antibacterial activity against Gram-negative extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-producing E. coli ) at 10 μg·mL −1 . The mechanism lies in the ROS burst, causing bacterial structure rupture, DNA damage and protein leakage. Interestingly, excessive addition of exogenous hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) will destroy the coupling cycle constructed by Cys-FeOCl, thereby weakening its bactericidal efficacy. This study confirms that cysteine, ultrasound-assisted, and FeOCl are the three essential factors for constructing the efficient nanozyme bactericidal agent Cys-FeOCl, providing a novel and powerful strategy for combating drug-resistant bacterial infections.

Constructing high-performance catalytic membrane materials for addressing antibiotic wastewater pollution is of great significance. In this work, a Mn-doped FeOCl functionalized carbon catalytic membrane (CM-FM) was successfully fabricated by immobilizing a Mn-doped FeOCl catalyst onto a low-cost coal-based porous carbon membrane through a straightforward co-impregnation and calcination approach. A systematic investigation was conducted on the effects of key preparation parameters, including the doping ratio and precursor concentration. Results demonstrated that the CM-FM prepared with a Mn:Fe doping ratio of 1:8 and a precursor concentration of 7 wt% exhibited optimal catalytic performance. Under these conditions, the H₂O₂ decomposition efficiency reached 83.5 %, significantly higher than that of the pristine CM (14 %) and CM-FeOCl (78 %). Moreover, the removal efficiencies of tetracycline (TC) and total organic carbon (TOC) were considerably enhanced, achieving 97 % and 48.5 %, respectively. The influence of operational parameters on the catalytic degradation of TC by CM-FM was also examined, confirming its good applicability across different water matrices. Mechanistic studies revealed that Mn doping promotes the catalytic activation of H₂O₂ by the membrane, leading to increased generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O₂). Based on HPLC-MS analysis, potential TC degradation pathways during the catalytic process were proposed. Additionally, ECOSAR software was employed to evaluate changes in the toxicity of degradation products in the permeate solution after catalytic treatment, providing an assessment of the environmental impact reduction.

In recent years, an increasing amount of drug pollutants such as antibiotics have been entering the water environment, and conventional water treatment technologies struggle to decompose these persistent organic contaminants. In response to the above situation, this study utilized a partial pyrolysis method to synthesize a novel type of BaTiO 3 /FeOCl heterostructure catalyst, and established a Piezoelectric-Photo-Fenton catalytic system to achieve effective degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). With concurrent exposure to visible light radiation and ultrasonic excitation, the BaTiO 3 /FeOCl system achieved complete degradation of TCH within 6 min, demonstrating significantly superior performance compared to individual components or single-process systems. Moreover, the system exhibited broad pH adaptability and excellent operational stability, and quantitative detection and radical trapping confirmed •OH and •O 2 − as the principal reactive oxygen species. Mechanism studies demonstrated that the intrinsic piezoelectric field of BaTiO 3 promotes charge carrier decoupling and boosts the turnover of the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox couple, while FeOCl served as an active site for H 2 O 2 activation, thereby synergistically leading to the abundant formation of reactive oxygen species (•OH and •O 2 − ). This work presents an effective strategy for integrating piezoelectric, photocatalytic, and Fenton processes to enhance catalytic efficiency, presenting a highly prospective strategy for the purification of organically polluted wastewater.

The widespread occurrence of carbamazepine (CBZ) in aquatic environments necessitates efficient water treatment technologies. This study developed a cobalt-doped iron oxychloride (Co-FeOCl) catalyst via a facile calcination method to activate peracetic acid (PAA) for enhanced degradation of CBZ. The incorporation of Co into the FeOCl structure dramatically boosted the catalytic performance, with 0.5Co-FeOCl exhibiting superior activity compared to pristine FeOCl. The 0.5Co-FeOCl/PAA system achieved an apparent rate constant of 0.039 min⁻ 1 , 19.5 and 5.6 times higher than that of the PAA alone (0.002 min⁻ 1 ) and FeOCl/PAA (0.007 min⁻ 1 ) systems, respectively. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the degradation was primarily driven by organic radicals (CH 3 C(O)OO• and CH 3 C(O)O•) and high-valent metal species (Co(IV) and Fe(IV)). The Co doping established synergistic Fe(II)/Fe(III)-Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycles, effectively accelerating the rate-limiting Fe(III) reduction step and facilitating continuous generation of reactive species. XPS analysis confirmed an increased surface Fe(II) content after reaction, supporting this synergistic mechanism. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that Co sites exhibit superior adsorption capacity for PAA compared to Fe sites on three main facets. This work not only presents 0.5Co-FeOCl as a highly efficient and stable catalyst for PAA activation but also provides fundamental insights into the synergistic mechanisms in bimetallic/PAA systems for remediating refractory organic pollutants.
