A series of composites comprising FeO x and TiO 2 nanoparticles uniformly distributed throughout a mesoporous carbon matrix (hereafter denoted as FeO x /TiO 2 @mC nanocomposites) was synthesized by the direct pyrolysis of a bimetallic Fe/Ti-based metal–organic framework at high temperatures (500, 700, and 900 °C). It shows that the as-prepared FeO x /TiO 2 @mC nanocomposites exhibit large specific surface areas and hierarchically micro/mesoporous hybrid structures, further leading to high electron transfer rate. Combining the highly electrocatalytic activity of TiO 2 and FeO x and the good charge-transfer capability of mesoporous carbon, the caused synergism enables the construction of novel and platforms for sensitively detecting 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). After the optimization of sensitive layers and detection conditions, FeO x /TiO 2 @mC 700 (calcined at 700 °C) is found to exhibit high detection ability toward 4-NP owing to its excellent electrochemical performance and electrocatalytic activity. The FeO x /TiO 2 @mC 700 -based electrochemical sensor shows a low limit of detection of 0.183 μM (S/N = 3) within the linear range of 5–310 μM as determined using amperometry toward 4-NP. The proposed method also displays good anti-interference ability, stability, and applicability toward 4-NP determination in environmental water samples. All these results suggest that the components of the MOF-derived binary metal oxide/mesoporous carbon electrocatalyst can function as a novel electrocatalyst for more endeavors into the development of a promising sensing platform for hazardous compounds in the environment.

Rational design and development of stable nitrogen-doped carbon supported non-noble metal based nanocatalysts with unique natures of active species and support for highly chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes to arylamines remains a grand challenge. Here, firstly, an N, Fe-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been designed and synthesized. Furthermore, an efficient N-doped carbon fiber supported FeO x -based nanocatalyst (FeO x @CN- hpes ) was prepared via pyrolysis of MOF@polymer composite towards electrospun nanofiber crosslinked N, Fe-containing MOFs. Remarkably, the developed FeO x @CN- hpes enables the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline with unprecedented performance (215.8 h −1 ) compared to those of FeO x @CN- hp (176.2 h −1 ) and FeO x @CN- pes (45.2 h −1 ) catalysts prepared by conventional approaches. The comparative characterizations have revealed that the high dispersion of FeO x species, enhanced basicity, and more structural defects and Fe-N x species towards FeO x @CN- hpes are responsible for the high performance. Moreover, the effect of the pyrolysis temperature towards FeO x @CN- hpes on the performance of hydrogenation reaction was also systematically investigated. The results indicated that the FeO x @CN- hpes -400 catalyst prepared at 400 °C was identified as the best hydrogenation catalyst. More importantly, the FeO x @CN- hpes -400 catalyst exhibited excellent activity and exclusive selectivity for the hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes to corresponding arylamines, as well as successive recyclability without any loss in both activity and selectivity. Therefore, this work provides a feasible strategy for the synthesis of other heterogeneous MOFs-based derived catalysts with superior catalytic performance for diverse industrial processes.

Baicalin obtained from natural plants has essential medical value, so the development of accurate and sensitive quantitative methods for it is one of the most important tasks. Here, the FeO X /Fe@porous carbon composite (Fe@C) was synthesized by solvothermal method and carbonized at different temperatures under an N 2 atmosphere, and an electrochemical sensor designed based on this material was applied to the accurate and rapid determination of baicalin. According to the results of physical and electrochemical characterization, Fe@C at different pyrolysis temperatures exhibited different morphologies and different electrochemical properties , while the Fe@C pyrolyzed at 800 °C had the optimum performance. Compared with NH 2 -MIL-88B, the pyrolysis greatly reduces the charge transfer internal resistance of the material and has a larger porosity and specific surface area, resulting in an eminent electrochemical signal for the detection of baicalin. The sensor Fe@C-800/GCE not only has a linear range of 4 nM–700 nM with a low limit of detection of 1.16 nM for the detection of baicalin, but also has outstanding repeatability, anti-interference and stability for the detection of baicalin in several natural plant samples and herbal medicines samples. This work presents several pyrolytic NH 2 -MIL-88B as electrochemical sensors for the detection of baicalin for the first time, providing a novel idea for the application of MOFs derivatives in environmental analysis.

Iodinated X-ray contrast media, as a frequently used medical diagnosis in the imaging of internal organs, soft tissues, and blood vessels, are widely encountered in water environments because of their non-metabolic ability. Herein, a series of co-precipitates (DBC-FeO x ) of dissolved black carbon (DBC) and FeO x were successfully synthesized. The chelation of Fe species with COO – groups in DBC enhanced the excellent electron transfer capability and persulfate (PS) activation performance of the resulting DBC-FeO x , thus boosting iopamidol (IPM) degradation. The IPM removal rate constant in the DBC-FeO x /PS was 35 times and 4.6 times higher than those observed in the DBC/PS and FeO x /PS systems, respectively. There existed an appropriate C/Fe molar ratio in the DBC-FeO x co-precipitates for PS activation, and the IPM degradation was driven by both radical and non-radical pathways. Fe sites were the primary active sites in DBC-FeO x for PS activation, and C=O groups played an important role in accelerating the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle by promoting rapid electron transfer, thereby enhancing radical oxidation pathways. Concurrently, DBC-FeO x acted as an electron shuttle to promote the electron transfer from IPM to PS, creating non-radical pathways for IPM removal. IPM degradation processes involved amide hydrolysis oxidation, hydrogen extraction, and deiodination. The typical iodine species HOI was also converted to non-toxic IO 3 - after IPM decomposition, thus reducing potential risks.

Luteolin (Lu) is a dietary flavonoid that has attracted much attention due to its multiple health benefis effects. Herein, an ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor for Lu was constracted based on cobalt-doped microporous/mesoporous carbon (MMC) encapsulated peanut-like Fe 2 O 3 composite. The FeOx-Co-MMC composite was obtained by pyrolyzing a precursor named Fe 2 O 3 -Co-microporous/mesoporous dopamine (Fe 2 O 3 -Co-MMPDA) which was synthesized by a soft template method. Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited good detection of Lu with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.031 nM and a wide linear range from 0.05 to 1000 nM in detecting Lu. It also demonstrated good reproducibility (RSD = 3.16%), stability (RSD = 2.34%), and anti-interference properties. The sensor successfully detected Lu in real food samples such as honeysuckle with recoveries ranging from 96.1% to 104.8% (RSD <3%, n = 3). The present study provides an alternative method for Lu detection in food.

Memristor-based Pavlov associative memory circuit presented today only realizes the simple condition reflex process. The secondary condition reflex endows the simple condition reflex process with more bionic, but it is only demonstrated in design and involves the large number of redundant circuits. A FeO x -based memristor exhibits an evolution process from battery-like capacitance (BLC) state to resistive switching (RS) memory as the I-V sweeping increase. The BLC is triggered by the active metal ion and hydroxide ion originated from water molecule splitting at different interfaces, while the RS memory behavior is dominated by the diffusion and migration of ion in the FeO x switching function layer. The evolution processes share the nearly same biophysical mechanism with the second-order conditioning. It enables a hardware-implemented second-order associative memory circuit to be feasible and simple. This work provides a novel path to realize the associative memory circuit with the second-order conditioning at hardware level.

Thermocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen at low temperature was of great significance. In this study, a series of efficient and stable FeO x and FeO x S x catalysts were synthesized via a liquid precipitation method using ferrous sulfate, sodium hydroxide, and thiourea as precursors. The study focused on investigating the effects of sulfur introduction and preparation atmosphere on the catalytic performance. These catalysts were characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS and H 2 -TPR, which confirmed the successful preparation of sulfur-doped catalysts (denoted as FeO x S x -Air and FeO x S x -O 2 ). Under reaction conditions of 350 °C and water vapor (space velocity: 0.3 mL min −1 ), the sulfur-doped catalysts demonstrated superior activity, with FeO x S x -Air and FeO x S x -O 2 achieving H 2 production rates of approximately 0.0523 mmol (mL g) −1 and 0.04092 mmol (mL g) −1 , respectively, outperforming their undoped counterparts (FeO x -Air and FeO x -O 2 ). Meanwhile, FeO x S x -Air with the higher activity was more beneficial for the reaction than FeO x S x -O 2 , which indicated that a lower oxygen partial pressure facilitated the formation of unsaturated Fe coordination environments. The performance enhancement was attributed to the synergistic effect of sulfur doping and low oxygen partial pressure, which optimized the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ ratio and accelerated the Fe + /Fe 3+ redox cycle, thereby improving charge transfer efficiency and optimizing hydrogen production. These findings highlighted the critical role of sulfur incorporation under low-oxygen conditions in boosting the catalytic activity of iron oxide-based for low-temperature water splitting.

The development of highly efficient catalysts is important for the photothermal catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Herein, MIL-100(Fe) was used as the sacrificial template to prepare MnFeOxcatalysts with different Mn contents through the impregnation–calcination method, and their performance in photothermal catalytic oxidation of toluene was investigated. The results show that the content of Mn significantly affects the crystal phase structure, pore properties, surface chemical state, and optical response of the catalyst. Among them, 30%MnFeOxexhibits the best photothermal catalytic activity, with T50and T90being 211 and 237 °C, respectively, which are significantly lower than those of FeOx(232 and 260 °C). Characterization results suggested that the introduction of Mn caused the bandgap of FeOxto decrease from 1.96 to 1.67 eV. Meanwhile, the surface Fe2+, adsorbed oxygen (Oads) species, and oxygen vacancies were increased, enhancing visible light absorption and gaseous oxygen species adsorption and activation, which promoted the photothermal catalytic oxidation of toluene. Additionally, the 30%MnFeOxcatalyst presented good thermal stability and water resistance. Furthermore, during the reaction process, the in situ activation of the catalyst’s surface induced the increase in surface Fe2+, Mn3+,and Oadsspecies, which enhances the photothermal catalytic activity of the catalyst. Importantly, the in situ DRIFTS results further indicate that toluene is mainly oxidized along the path of toluene → benzyl alcohol → benzoate → maleic anhydride → CO2and H2O. This work provides a theoretical basis for the construction of low-cost, non-precious-metal Mn–Fe-based photothermal catalysts.

Promotion of Au/TiO2 by FeOx addition is shown to result in a very strong enhancement of activity and selectivity in the NO reduction with CO. The nanocomposite Au-FeOx/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by deposition–precipitation (Au/TiO2) and subsequent impregnation (FeOx). Structural characterization of the nanocomposite catalysts using XRD, TEM, TPR, XPS, and DRIFTS revealed that they consist of titania-supported Au particles of about 4.4–4.8 nm size, which were partially covered with a thin layer of FeOx,, mainly made up of Fe2+ (FeO), in addition to a small fraction of Fe3+ (Fe2O3). In situ DRIFTS studies showed that, in comparison to Au/TiO2, on the Au-FeOx/TiO2 nanocomposites new adsorption sites were created, which led to enrichment of CO and NO molecules on the Au surface and at its interfaces with FeOx and TiO2. At the reaction temperature (250 °C), a new surface NO–CO complex, where both Fe and Au are proposed to be involved in the adsorptive interaction, was discovered. The titania-supported Au-FeOx nanocomposites considerably facilitated the formation of this complex and contributed to the striking enhancement of the catalytic performance (activity and selectivity) of the Au-based catalyst.

In this work, the FeO x /MnO y decorated oxidized carbon nanotubes (CNTs-Fe-Mn) composites were synthesized and used as catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for organic pollutants degradation. The catalytic ability of the CNTs-Fe-Mn catalyst was strongly correlated with the oxidation of CNTs and the molar ratio of Fe/Mn. When the CNTs was oxidized by 30 wt% HNO 3 and the modified molar ratio of Fe/Mn was 0.5, the 30%-CNTs-Fe-Mn-0.5 showed highest efficiency for rhodamine B (RhB) degradation via activating PMS, and the removal rate of 95% was achieved in 60 min at room temperature in 15 mg L −1 RhB solution with catalyst dosage of 0.1 g L −1 . Fe and Mn multivalent oxide species coexisted were randomly distributed on the outer surface and encapsulated into the channels of oxidized CNTs in the 30%-CNTs-Fe-Mn-0.5 catalyst. The XPS results of catalysts before and after reaction proved that the redox cycles between the multivalent states of Fe and Mn ensured the superior catalytic activity of the 30%-CNTs-Fe-Mn-0.5 for PMS activation. The radical quenching tests and D 2 O experiments confirmed that SO 4 − , HO· and O 2 − radicals were the main reactive oxidized species for the oxidation of pollutants in the 30%-CNTs-Fe-Mn-0.5/PMS system. In addition, the influences of operation parameters including initial pH, pollutant concentration, catalyst dosage, and PMS dosage on catalytic degradation were investigated.

Iron decoration has been recognized as one of the most important paths to enhance contaminant adsorption by carbon-based composites. In this study, varying amounts of Fe (II) are used for the modification of graphene oxide chitosan (GOCS) materials to assess the impact of iron oxide (FeOx) morphology on the composites and their efficiency in arsenic (As) removal. Results show that incorporating 0.08 mol Fe(II) into GOCS yields better As removal performance, leading to a remarkable enhancement by 5 times for As(V) and 6 times for As(III). The iron minerals in the material consist of goethite (FeO(OH)) and magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ), with FeO(OH) playing a predominant role in As removal through the complexation and electrostatic attraction of −OH and Fe − O groups. The adsorption capacity for As ( Q e ) decreases with the increasing pH and the mass and v olume ratio ( m/v ) but increases with the increasing initial concentration ( C 0 ). Besides, the presence of SO 4 2− and HPO 4 2− can significantly reduce As remo v al by the FeOx-modified GOCS. Under the conditions of pH = 3, m/v = 1.0 g/L, and C 0 = 10 mg/L, a maximum Q e value reaches 61.94 mg/g. The adsorption is well-fitted to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and is an endothermic, spontaneous, and monolayer adsorption process .

A series of Ru/FeO x catalysts were synthesized for the selective hydrogenation of CO 2 to CO. Detailed characterizations of the catalysts through X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and temperature-programmed techniques were performed to directly monitor the surface chemical properties and the catalytic performance to elucidate the reaction mechanism. Highly dispersed Ru species were observed on the surface of FeO x regardless of the initial Ru loading. Varying the Ru loading resulted in changes to the Ru coverage over the FeO x surface, which had a significant impact on the interaction between Ru and adsorbed H, and concomitantly, the H 2 activation capacity via the ability for H 2 dissociation. FeO x having 0.01% of Ru loading exhibited 100% selectivity toward CO resulting from the very strong interaction between Ru and adsorbed H, which limits the desorption of the activated H species and hinders over-reduction of CO to CH 4 . Further increasing the Ru loading of the catalysts to above 0.01% resulted in the adsorbed H to be easily dissociated, as a result of a weaker interaction with Ru, which allowed excessive CO reduction to produce CH 4 . Understanding how to selectively design the catalyst by tuning the initial loading of the active phase has broader implications on the design of supported metal catalysts toward preparing liquid fuels from CO 2 .
