FeP-Based Nanotheranostic Platform for Enhanced Phototherapy/Ferroptosis/Chemodynamic Therapy

Na An,Shuanglong Tang,Yuwei Wang,Jing Luan,Ying Shi,Minghui Gao,Chongshen Guo

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent and lipid peroxides (LPO)-overloaded programmed damage cell death, induced by glutathione (GSH) depletion and glutathione peroxide 4 (GPX4) inactivation. However, the inadequacy of endogenous iron and reactive oxygen species (ROS) restricts the efficacy of ferroptosis. To overcome this obstacle, a near-infrared photo-responsive FeP@PEG NPs is fabricated. Exogenous iron pool can enhance the effect of ferroptosis via the depletion of GSH and further regulate GPX4 inactivation. Generation of ·OH derived from the Fenton reaction is proved by increased accumulation of lipid peroxides. The heat generated by photothermal therapy and ROS generated by photodynamic therapy can enhance cell apoptosis under near-infrared (NIR-808 nm) irradiation, as evidenced by mitochondrial dysfunction and further accumulation of lipid peroxide content. FeP@PEG NPs can significantly inhibit the growth of several types of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, which is validated by theoretical and experimental results. Meanwhile, FeP@PEG NPs show excellent T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) property. In summary, the FeP-based nanotheranostic platform for enhanced phototherapy/ferroptosis/chemodynamic therapy provides a reliable opportunity for clinical cancer theranostics.

Electron redistribution induced by p–d orbital hybridization in Co2P/FeP nanosheets boosts water electrooxidation

Qiyan Sun,Yu Miao,Ruixue Zhang,Guang-Rui Xu,Chuanfang Zhang,Kang Liu,Zexing Wu,Lei Wang

Water electrooxidation in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers has been considered to be a four-electron pathway mechanism, which leads to inherent sluggish kinetics that severely limits the scalable production of high-purity H2. Herein, cobalt phosphide/iron phosphide (Co2P/FeP) nanosheets with electron redistribution through aerogel-assisted and gas-phase phosphorization strategies have been reported. Benefiting from the unique nanosheet structure and electron redistribution induced by p–d hybridization interaction, the as-obtained Co2P/FeP nanosheets display outstanding alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Co–P and Fe–P charge bridges trigger p–d orbital hybridization between the transition metal and P elements, which downshifts the d-band center of Co2P/FeP nanosheets and accelerates the formation of *OOH with a lower energy barrier that can expedite the water electrooxidation process with an overpotential of 257 mV to reach the 10 mA cm−2 current density and a Tafel slope of 39.6 mV dec−1. This work provides a deep insight into understanding the remarkable OER properties of transition metal phosphates by electron redistribution.

FeP Coated in Nitrogen/Phosphorus Co-doped Carbon Shell Nanorods Arrays as High-Rate Capable Flexible Anode for K-ion Half/Full Batteries

Yujie Yang,Linlin Wang,Suyuan Zeng,Kangning Zhao,Qian Wu,Li Yan,Haoyu Tian,Zheng Jiao,Jiujun Zhang

Building a proper flexible electrode with high cycling stability, rate capacity and initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) for flexible potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) remains a challenge. Herein, nitrogen/phosphorus co-doped carbon coated FeP nanorods arrays on carbon cloth (FeP@N, P C NRs/CC) as high-rate capable flexible self-supporting anode was successfully fabricated. The composite electrode combines the advantages of FeP nanorods arrays (FeP NRs), carbon cloth (CC) and N, P co-doped carbon shell (N, P–C), which comprehensively improves the electrochemical stability of the flexible electrode, while the open space between FeP nanorods can facilitate electrolyte impregnation and enhance K + transfer, thus effectively elevating the corresponding rate capability. For the FeP@N, P C NRs/CC electrode, it delivers a reversible capacity of 388.8 mA h g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 up to 400 cycles. Even at 1.5 A g −1 , it can still achieve a remarkable rate capacity of 346.9 mA h g −1 . Moreover, the assembled soft-packed cell can always light the LED lights when it is bent at different angles, which exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility.

Porous nitrogen-doped FeP/C nanofibers as promising anode for potassium-ion batteries

Zhang Wen,Liu Ye,Ye Zhong-qiang,Yang Min,Luo Qi,Dai Jing,Wang Qian-fu,Liu Li

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are regarded as one of the alternatives to lithium-ion batteries due to the vast potassium reserves in nature and low potential of K + /K. Therefore, in this work, we successfully synthesized porous nitrogen-doped FeP/C nanofibers (P-FeP/C-N NFs), a novel electrode material for PIBs, via simple electrospinning and subsequent calcination treatment, in which polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) are used as nitrogen source and pore-forming agent, respectively. The introduction of nitrogen improves the conductivity of the material, and the formation of a porous structure increases the specific surface area. More importantly, when the P-FeP/C-N NFs were used as electrode for potassium ion batteries, they exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. The P-FeP/C-N NFs electrode exhibits a discharge capacity of 274.2 mA·h/g at 100 mA/g after 250 cycles and 171.3 mA·h/g at 1000 mA/g after 300 cycles. Even at 5000 mA/g, it displays a high discharge capacity of 150.1 mA·h/g. These findings indicate that the P-FeP/C-N NFs are expected to be a candidate of anode materials for potassium ion batteries.

Oxygen Vacancy-Engineered FeP/BiOBr Heterojunction for Enhanced Photo-Fenton Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride: Synergistic Catalysis and Mechanistic Insights

Haixia Li,Chuanqiang Yin,Dan Li,Feigao Xu

In this study, oxygen vacancy-engineered FeP/BiOBr heterojunction composites (FB-3) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method to achieve enhanced tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation through a visible-light-driven photo-Fenton process. Systematic characterizations (SEM, XRD, XPS, and EPR) confirmed the successful integration of FeP with BiOBr, which modulated the band structure, introduced abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs), and suppressed photogenerated carrier recombination. Under the optimized conditions (0.2 g L–1 catalyst, 10 mM H2O2, and pH 4.2), the FB-3 composite achieved 94.2% TCH removal at an initial concentration of 40 mg L–1 within 90 min, with 73.9% TOC mineralization and minimal iron leaching of only 0.21 mg L–1. Mechanistic studies revealed that OVs acted as electron traps, accelerating Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycling and synergistically activating H2O2 to generate dominant reactive radicals (•OH and •O2–). Radical trapping experiments and EPR analysis validated the critical roles of photogenerated carriers and OVs in enhancing surface kinetics. The composite exhibited robust performance in diverse water matrices, demonstrating potential for antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Interfacial electronic engineering of carbon nanosphere-confined Ni2P-FeP heterojunctions for water splitting and electro‐Fenton

Neng Chen,Xun Cao,Hongqiang Li,Dedong Jia,Yong Li,Xiaojun He

The water splitting with electro-Fenton (WS-EF) system offers a dual-functional approach for sustainable H 2 production and pollutant degradation, of which the key is to the development of catalysts with high conductivity, multi-active sites, and synergized pathways for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) and EF processes. In this work, we propose a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived synthesis strategy to construct carbon nanosphere-confined Ni 2 P-FeP heterostructures on nickel foam (Ni 2 P-FeP@C/NF) via in-situ confined growth, carbonization-alloying, and phosphidation strategy. First-principles calculations reveal that the carefully engineered Ni 2 P/FeP interface effectively tubes the metal d-band center, achieving an optimal hydrogen adsorption free energy for HER while precisely regulating *OOH intermediate adsorption for OER. The Ni 2 P-FeP@C/NF exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance, achieving low overpotentials of merely 69.5/233 mV for HER/OER, along with a voltage of 1.55 V at a current density of 10 mA cm cm −2 for overall water splitting. When employed in the electro-Fenton system, the heterointerface exhibits multifunctional catalytic properties: it selectively promotes the 2e - oxygen reduction pathway (85 % H 2 O 2 selectivity) and achieves remarkable sulfamethazine degradation (0.28 min −1 kinetic rate, 78 % TOC removal) in the KOH solution. The carbon nanosphere-confined Ni 2 P-FeP heterojunction nanospheres demonstrate exceptional long-term stability for both water electrolysis and electro-Fenton catalysis. This work pioneers interface engineering strategies for coupled hydrogen production-wastewater treatment systems by tuning electronic structure.

Self-Supported FeP-CoMoP Hierarchical Nanostructures for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Qin Wang,Zhiying Wang,Yue Zhao,Fumin Li,Ling Xu,Xiaoming Wang,Huan Jiao,Yu Chen

Graphical FeP-CoMoP hierarchical nanostructures (HNSs) were successfully fabricated through a facile phosphorization strategy using Co−Mo-Fe HNSs as precursors, and directly served as electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution. Owing to the well-defined hierarchical nanostructures with high charge-transfer efficiency, favourable conductivity and good electrolyte infiltration, the FeP-CoMoP HNSs display an excellent HER performance in alkaline media. Fabricating highly efficient electrocatalysts for electrochemical hydrogen generation is a top priority to relief the global energy crisis and environmental contamination. Herein, a rational synthetic strategy is developed for constructing well-defined FeP−CoMoP hierarchical nanostructures (HNSs). In general terms, the self-supported Co nanorods (NRs) are grown on conductive carbon cloth and directly serve as a self-sacrificing template. After solvothermal treatment, Co NRs are converted into well-ordered Co−Mo nanotubes (NTs). Subsequently, the small-sized Fe oxyhydroxide nanorods arrays are hydrothermally grown on the surface of Co−Mo NTs to form Fe−Co−Mo HNSs, which are then converted into FeP−CoMoP HNSs through a facile phosphorization treatment. FeP−CoMoP HNSs display high activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with an ultralow cathodic overpotential of 33 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 51 mV dec −1 . Moreover, FeP−CoMoP HNSs also possess an excellent electrochemical durability in alkaline media. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the remarkable HER activitiy of FeP−CoMoP HNSs originates from the synergistic effect between FeP and CoMoP.

Robust preparation of tubular PTFE/FEP ultrafine fibers-covered porous membrane by electrospinning for continuous highly effective oil/water separation

Yan Huang,Changfa Xiao,Qinglin Huang,Hailiang Liu,Zhuang Guo,Kaixuan Sun

We proposed a facile and robust strategy for fabricating tubular polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) / poly (tetrafluoroethylene- co -hexafluoropropylene) (FEP) ultrafine fibers-covered porous membranes for continuous oil/water separation via electrospinning-sintering method. Specifically, PTFE/FEP/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) ultrafine fibers were electrospun covering on a porous supporting tube which served as the outer layer of the porous membranes. Manipulation of shapes by control of FEP additions enabled the creation of PTFE porous membranes with optimized membrane pore structure during the sintering process. Meanwhile, the obtained membranes had excellent oil/water selectivity in oil/water separation. Moreover, they could effectively separate surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions with separation efficiency as high as 99.9% and high flux (134 L m −2 ·h −1 at 0.5 bar). Therefore, tubular PTFE/FEP ultrafine fibers-covered porous membranes enabled an efficient separation for various oil/water emulsions, showing attractive potential for practical oil/water separation.

Hollow CoP-FeP cubes decorating carbon nanotubes heterostructural electrocatalyst for enhancing the bidirectional conversion of polysulfides in advanced lithium-sulfur batteries

Fengjin Yi,Jiayu Wang,Weiliang Liu,Jinshui Yao,Mei Li,Chunsheng Li,Yan Sun,Jiaxi Cui,Manman Ren

The sluggish redox reaction kinetics and “shuttle effect” of lithium polysulfides (LPSs) impede the advancement of high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Transition metal phosphides exhibit distinctive polarity, metallic properties, and tunable electron configuration , thereby demonstrating enhanced adsorption and electrocatalytic capabilities towards LPSs. Consequently, they are regarded as exceptional sulfur hosts for LSBs. Moreover, the introduction of a heterogeneous structure can enhance reaction kinetics and expedite the transport of electrons/ions. In this study, a composite of hollow CoP-FeP cubes with heterostructure modified carbon nanotube (CoFeP-CNTs) was fabricated and utilized as sulfur host in advanced LSBs. The presence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) facilitates enhanced electron and Li + transport. Meanwhile, the active sites within the heterogeneous interface of CoP-FeP suppress the “shuttle effect” and enhance the conversion kinetics of LPSs. Therefore, the CoFeP-CNTs/S electrode exhibited exceptional cycling stability and demonstrated a capacity attenuation of merely 0.051 % per cycle over 600 cycles at 1C. This study presents a highly effective tactic for synthesizing dual-acting transition metal phosphides with heterostructure, which will play a pivotal role in advancing the development of efficient LSBs.

Chemical fabrication and synergistic mechanism of N-doped carbon modified with FeP as catalysts for flexible rechargeable Zn–air batteries

Xianli Wu,Ting Zhou,Guosheng Han,Shuling Liu,Mengmeng Cao,Shuqi Li,Jiawen Wang,Yanyan Liu,Jianchun Jiang,Yongfeng Wang,Baojun Li

Low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are vital for the applications of flexible rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, three-dimensional (3D) porous N-doped Paulownia-derived carbon modified with FeP nanoparticles (FeP@NPW) was used as a bifunctional catalyst for flexible rechargeable ZABs. The FeP@NPW electrocatalyst exhibits a first-class bifunctional activity for the ORR and OER. The descriptor ΔE between the half-wave potential of the ORR and the potential of the OER at 10 mA cm−2 was 0.65 V. The flexible rechargeable ZABs have a high open circuit voltage of 1.43 V and superior cycle stability (over 70 h). Coupling 3D hierarchical pores of NPW and FeP facilitates charge exchange, mass transfer, and electron transportation. A high concentration of FeP sites was available during the reaction because of the large specific surface area (798 m2 g−1) of FeP@NPW. The synergistic effects between N-doped biomass-derived carbon and FeP nanoparticles improve the catalytic activity towards the ORR and OER. This work paves the way for the conversion of abundant biomass into high-value engineering products and the application of transition metals in the energy conversion and storage field.

Sulfur-doped FeP enables a pH-induced switch from ·OH to Fe(IV)=O for efficient sulfamethoxazole degradation via Fenton-like catalysis

Feitong Chen,Yulin Fan,Zhuohan Lin,Zhixian Li,Xueqing Qiu,Hongming Lou,Yuxia Pang

This study presents a pH-switchable Fenton-like system based on sulfur-doped FeP synthesized via a confined gas–solid strategy, where ·OH dominates at pH 3.0 and Fe(IV)=O prevails at pH 6.0. Sulfur incorporation modulates the FeP electronic structure by expanding the lattice, enhancing Fe–P covalency, and increasing electron density, thereby promoting charge transfer and reducing the activation barrier for H 2 O 2 activation. The optimized FePS 15 catalyst achieved ~99% sulfamethoxazole degradation (150   mg/L) within 15   minutes, exhibiting a reaction rate 2.54 times higher than that of undoped FeP. When further supported on lignin-derived carbon spheres (FePS 15 @LC), it exhibited enhanced structural integrity, suppressed iron leaching, and improved reusability. These findings demonstrate that sulfur doping drives pH-dependent ROS switching from ·OH to Fe(IV)=O, supporting adaptable Fenton-like catalysis. This work improves mechanistic insight into ROS modulation and enables pH-adaptable advanced oxidation processes for pollutant removal.

An FeP/carbon composite derived from a phytic acid-Fe3+ complex for sulfathiazole degradation through peroxymonosulfate activation

Xuqian Wang,Zhimei He,Yi Xie,Yongkui Zhang,Yabo Wang

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation-based advanced oxidation technology possesses great potential for antibiotic-containing wastewater treatment . Herein, we developed an iron phosphide/carbon composite and verified its capability and superiority towards a model antibiotic pollutant (sulfathiazole, STZ) degradation through PMS activation. Benefiting from the chelating ability of phytic acid (PA) with metal ions and its abundance on phosphorous element, a PA-Fe 3+ complex was firstly formed and then served as sole precursor for iron phosphide formation by anoxic pyrolysis . Well crystalized FeP particle were found loading on the simultaneously formed thin layer carbon structure. Catalytic activity evaluation showed that FeP/carbon composite could remove over 99% of STZ (20 mg L −1 ) in 20 min adsorption and 30 min catalysis process under the reaction conditions of catalyst dosage 0.2 g L −1 , PMS loading 0.15 g L −1 . A pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of 0.2193 min −1 was obtained, which was among the highest compared with reported studies. Further investigations indicated that the developed FeP/carbon composite worked well in a wide solution pH range of 3–9. Reaction mechanism study showed that reactive species of SO 4 − • and 1 O 2 generated from PMS activation played major roles for STZ degradation. Based on liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) analysis, a few STZ degradation intermediate products were identified, which facilitated the proposal of STZ degradation pathways. The possible ecological risk of STZ and related degradation intermediates were also considered by toxicity assessment using the Ecological Structure Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) Class Program. The obtained acute and chronic toxicity values implied the relatively low ecological risk of FeP/carbon-PMS reaction system for STZ treatment.
